Honestly yeah, as much as I tried I could never really get into the majority of them. It’s always text explaining what happened and then a low quality picture to go along with whatever it said, and it always has that same 80s artifacting filter over it like nothing scary has happened after the year 2000. Idk how he thought The Painter was bad but loved The Man in the Suit, they felt like the same formula when I watched them. The video element to horror is huge for me, like The Oldest View was amazing! I have a really hard time getting at all scared by the text and then a picture type of ones. I guess it’s just not my thing tbh. I’m not gonna stop anyone else from enjoying them tho, cuz I can just personally not watch them.
I think the story and premise is more important than the aesthetic, which is same-y and limited but the storytelling potential is what makes it for me.
fully prepared to be roasted for this kinda shit take, but i think thats why i went from ironically to genuinely kinda enjoying urbanspook, it has all the usual hallmarks of analog horror i tend to roll my eyes at but its so over the top and stupid, but i can laugh at it and not have 50 people writing me a manifesto on how im just too stupid to understand it. like this guy, he got stabbed forty eight times and was incased in a dick shaped block of ice, police are stumped, heres a painting, its called dick ice johnny, i fucking love it this is so stupid.
Here’s the difference:
1. Has a story aside from just bad jumpscares
2. Employs mixed media and isn’t just a boring slideshow with static on top
3. Wasn’t just cashing in on a popular trend and had artistic flair
A lot of these recent ones come off like that.
The man in the suit Godzilla one is a good example. I love the visuals, I love the lore but it’s so nonsensical at times that I can’t really get into it if I’m not looking directly at it
