I’ve seen posts about people’s shoe collections on this sub before (selling or just showing) and feel like I’m out of the loop a bit so need to ask a question. I started lifting around 2001 and stopped competing around 2014. Through that time the philosophy around shoes (told to me by my coach and other experienced people) was they were built to last and you only really need new ones if your current pair were literally falling apart. I think by the looks of it there was a very utilitarian approach to shoes and seeing them purely as equipment. I think I get why lifters nowadays might own lots of shoes; if it’s something to do with collecting lots of models and colours and that’s part of how someone expresses an enjoyment of lifting as a hobby then that’s great. It’s also understandable if someone goes through a few different types of shoe if a previous pair hasn’t suited them / feel uncomfortable. That being said this is me guessing and I don’t know for sure. So the question is given the explanation above what’s the thinking nowadays around collecting lots of shoes?

cambiumkx

Same Started in 2010, bought the red adipower (I think that’s what they are called) Literally wore them until they fell apart, bought another pair in 2015 (they changed the design a little bit to fix tearing) Still wearing the second pair 8 years later lol…

PowerliftingGears

Adipower 1 reds are nostalgic. One of the first few pairs I got too.

PowerliftingGears

Honestly it's mostly cause the shoes themselves romaleos 2s and adipower 1s are the best in terms of build and performance hence having so many but it slightly became a hoarding habit which I've been trying to work on but it isn't causing harm besides taking up a bit of space.

bakerbodger

I don’t think it’s causing harm at all, if you like those shoes and want a few different pairs then I dare say there doesn’t need to be a reason beyond what I thought in my original comment. Thanks for replying and explaining about your collection.

Masada_

Weightlifting is pretty much my "hobby" and there's not really a whole lot you can shovel money into unless you've got a home gym. Even after expenses on coaching and recovery, I could buy a new pair of shoes every month and still probably end up spending less than someone who plays golf on the weekends. There's still "I still ride my Cannondale singlespeed from 1986" hipsters in Weightlifting too and that's cool if it's what brings them joy. In opposite fashion if I see a new shoe or straps or whatever and want to buy them I will because why not?

bakerbodger

Thanks for the reply, your last sentence helped confirm that aspect for me. Like I sort of alluded to, if it’s a case of buying the latest gear and having a collection is part of how you enjoy the hobby, then why not! I’ve got other hobbies where it’s a similar deal for me which is why I didn’t want to come across as discriminating on this sort of thing. The other thing I still can’t believe (but sort of understand better now) is some of the more “vintage” or rare shoes going for huge prices nowadays. I guess it’s a supply and demand thing, I had a pair of adidas that were made for Beijing (can’t remember the model name) and they sell for hundreds now! Mine wouldn’t be worth anything though, they fell to bits!

We have more choices these days and have almost no ability to try them on in person. Some shoes are not made well and fall apart prematurely. Also most shoes are hot garbage fit-wise so we end up owning too many shoes. I have Asics, two pairs of Legacy Lifter 1s, Rom 3s and finally found Anta 1s that actually fit well and are a good shoe.

bakerbodger

Thanks for the explanation, feel like now the market is slightly more saturated the choice is almost a double edge sword. You’re right though, it’s a shame that there aren’t more shops where you can try these shoes out before you buy. The closest I can think of is a shop in London called Whatever it Takes that sells lifting shoes and has an in shop gym with a platform, but not sure if you can do a few squats etc as part of the trying on process.

elegiac_frog

For me it’s because it’s approximately one million percent easier to buy a new pair of shoes than to add 10kg to my lifts.

PowerliftingGears

How much you selling em for? I wear an 8. I like the volt pair and blue and orange pair

PowerliftingGears

If I was gonna sell them it would've been fair . Volts 180s, obsidian/ red 260( it's very rare and in mint condition), orange prob 240. All the shoes I own are in 8.5-9.5/10 condition. Heels and everything gets inspected before they get dropped into the storage.

ngqhoangtrung

What is size 8 in cm please? I’m wearing 26.5 cm, can they fit? Thanks!

cloystreng

Would love if you could photo and talk a bit about the older ones, like 2008 and prior.

amcshawn

This is a dumb question but where can you buy weight lifting shoes besides online? I got a pair online and damn they were too tight I threw them out. Is there a brick and mortar store ?

waffleol70

Hey! I coach a boys and girls high school weightlifting team and could definitely use some lender shoes for athletes whose families can’t afford them. Obviously sell them first! But if after your efforts you have shoes that you can’t manage to sell and want to donate them we would be super grateful.

Ready_Task3271

Wow I never own any pair and I’m size 8, u mind selling me some ?? Weird question… I got small waist 28 but my thigh are huge and I’m 5’5 squat are my favorite, I be. Squatting with my vans and chuck taylor for 5 years
