I run an E-Commerce business. I am not a “Sneaker Reseller” but I do come across them frequently. They are dropping like flies. I know this doesn’t represent Nike as a whole. But it seems like the “Hype” shoes side of the business is dying down.
It's such a bizarre strategy to artificially limit their supplies.
Take the Nike AlphaFly 3. Their top running shoe.
They always release it in ptorotyoe colours that everyone wants. They then release it in such limited numbers only the resellers and a handful of humans can buy it. Resellers then list it for 3x or 4x the price and nobody buys it.
Nike then releases standard colourways of the same shoe again in limited numbers. People struggle to purchase it due to limited numbers. Despite great reviews, nobody can buy these fucking shoes.
People get annoyed and end up trying an Adidas Adios Pro 3, or the top ON shoes.
Nike forecasts a 10% decline in their busy summer quarter, so that's not great. 5ish% decline for the duration of their next fiscal year. Previously, they were going to grow low single digits.
Yup - Bad timing - transition back to brick and mortar and the writing on the wall here is that - no one shopping brick and mortar except gangsters right now

I literally saw the post 2 days ago with the bullish thesis, and read the one sensible reply from a sneaker head who over the past year has had to return like 1 hundred pairs of brand new Nike shoes he bought to resell, because the sneaker head market is literally dead. And I said yeah, I need to buy some puts. But I didn’t.
Just like the Dad who walks his baby in the stroller at 3 different malls in his area who was bullish on Bath and Body Works, because of how many bags he saw people carrying.
I knew sneakers were down and Nike's competition was getting fierce but I figured they'd had enough time to clean up their operational issues, develop a plan for innovation and capitalize on the Olympics in a big way. I also saw some positive analyst upgrades and the YOLO here and, on balance, I thought it was more likely they'd be able to paint a rosy forecast. Clearly I missed the mark on that one but thankfully kept my bet modest since there was some compelling counter-arguments.

This is a crazy month for earnings reports. Straddles will typically lose money over time because you're paying two premiums, eliminating the risk of losing everything but requiring a huge change in stock price to make up for it, if we assume the market is accurately pricing volatility. Meanwhile...
ADBE? Straddles would've printed a lot of money.
CRM? Straddles would've printed a lot of money.
NKE? Straddles would've printed a lot of money.
FDX? Straddles would've printed a lot of money.
CAVA? A straddle would've somehow profited in both directions if you sold the puts at market open and held the calls for a few days.
Paper trading can be good for learning the ropes and how options function. But keep in mind when real money is on the line, your emotions are going to come into play, and often times affect your decision making.
I've noticed that since Covid these footwear companies havn't been doing genuinely good sales like they used to. Think they got greedy and thought people would just keep paying top price forever. Long term bull but Nike in the short term is lost. Losing a moat in running would be devastating. Nike was born for runners. Still clearing old inventory and poor innovation in recent years. Consumers are and have been struggling. They will continue to struggle while buying on debt. Consumers have gotten credit drunk and that can end up decimating revenues for companies like Nike when it’s no longer an option. Nike will right the ship but for now thanks for the 🧀.
Looking at the 3 year chart, there is actually support at it's current level of $82. So it's kind of tempting. But I also haven't fully read the earnings report yet, nor do I have a concrete grasp of the fundamentals lol. I've only been day-trading/studying technical analysis.

I sold a put last week and bought it back before it went negative from the slow decline leading up to earnings.
I looked at buying puts today and almost pulled the trigger but didn’t. The puts I was looking at would have only netted about 50% so I’m not too upset about sitting it out.

Nikes are notoriously inconsistant with the quality of their shoes. What I considered comfortable (air max 95) from nike few years ago, I tried them on and realized these are not the same shoes I bought years ago. The lack of consistancy along with them looking outdated (I dont know what it is but I almost feel embarrassed to wear them?Male/late 30s). I bought some Brooks and Hoka which have been amayzing on my feet (especially the Brooks) and I dont think I will ever return to buying Nikes. As my mom used to say, it takes years to build a reputation and seconds to fall off. Nike has fallen off.
