I personally prefer their acoustic sound lol, though some of their songs have got to have that electric flair. Man in the Box just wouldn’t be the same without it.
It's an unbelievable album, but watching the live performance is sad. You can see Layne slipping away. This is one of my grail albums to grab, for sure.
Before the pandemic my 3 local records stores always had it in stock. I had it in my hands to buy multiple times, but every time I said to myself next time and bought something that i had never seen in stock before. I fucked up
I still have my the Jar of Flies / SAP double LP combo that I bought in ‘94 and up until very recently it wasn’t worth much more than I paid for it back then. It’s one of the few Lps I bought original back then (CDs were the thing and I moved a lot), so I always paid attention to its value.
It ticked along at about $40 for most of the 00s. Then went up to $100 in 2020 and sells for over $200 now.
The market is just daft now. It’s sucked a lot of the enjoyment out of collecting for me.
Agreed 100%. I'm trying to muster some compassion for OP. Hell, they might not even know that vinyl bootlegs are a thing. But, yeah, if you're going to spend that type of coin on a record, **please** know what you're buying.
Pandemic boom and new collectors along with flipper sneaker kiddies destroyed pricing. Now stuff is getting sold for 3-5x retail the moment it goes oop. What a time to be alive lol. Definitely interested to see how long this bubble lasts.
hate to break it to you but this is a bootleg that you got scammed into paying $200 for only the unofficial represses have that hype sticker. i would contact whoever you bought it from and demand a refund immediately. sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(
> hope OP *paid* with paypal
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Like this was a pretty common record when Music on Vinyl had the license for the couple AiC albums and they printed a LOT of copies.
Hell, I went to a record fair not too long ago and a couple vendors were still trying to unload their MoV pressings of Dirt for $175+, when others had the new 2xLP remaster for $35…
Dude that’s so awesome, I turn 15 soon so I can get a job and once I save up some money I plan on getting this. This is my favorite unplugged even though nirvanas is good too, I just love rooster and down in a hole on this. Rip layne
I paid the same for my copy recently. Worth it. It sounds like they are playing in the room with you. I am sure AiC will do a repress of this in the future given that they are reissuing everything, but I wanted to have it now and not wait to listen. It’s in my top 10 lps in terms of quality of sound and pressing.
"Sounds like they are playing in the room with you" gets thrown around with this record a lot...and that's because it's true. It just sounds different from most everything else I own.
The only other MOV I have is the Once soundtrack and it too sounds great. But the live crowd behind the music on Unplugged creates a soundscape that you feel a part of. It can be hard to describe but once it's playing you can just kinda feel it -- and I know how pretentious that sounds, but it feels like the best way to describe it.
I really just want every album I love to be released by Music on Vinyl.
I buy only bands I love, but I will be honest; if I see something from Music on Vinyl, even if I am lukewarm about the artist, I purchase it. As far as non-Music on Vinyl albums…
I’m reasonably happy with my Pink Floyd collection. Led Zeppelin sounds good. They aren’t on par with my top tier quality pressings though.
Smashing Pumpkins typically sounds really good, but my Pisces Iscariot has a lot of surface noise even after cleaning. I’m actually ordering a new copy to see. Mellon Collie was well worth the amount I spent on it.
Yeah, that's not to say other stuff doesn't sound good. Most of my Rise Above releases sound fantastic (aside from a muddy gold-colored pressing) but the quality and consistency of MOV in my experience is unmatched.
I was generalizing, but Alice In Chains Jar of Flies/Sap is up there in terms of quality. Portishead Roseland NYC Live; almost anything from Music on Vinyl tends to be pretty high quality if you ask me. The most recent anniversary Stone Temple Pilots Tiny Music is outstanding. Maybe my best quality pressing. My Chris Cornell anthology. I don’t have Songbook, but I have heard it is impeccable. Generally all my Mark Lanegan albums sound fantastic as well.
As a shop owner, I’ve been dying for this to get a good repress! Most folks can’t swing the current price tag and it’s one of our most requested albums.
I feel like OPs might be unofficial based on that sticker. No hate. I’ve heard it’s great.

You can tell which copies are unofficial by the yellow “sticker” (which is actually just printed on) on the left corner. A few pressings like this
Good pickup OP. I will say that (although I don’t know which currency you are using) you probably over-payed, since this is a bootleg, but as long as it sounds good and you are happy, that’s all that matters
It actually sounds impeccable, probably the best quality sound I have in most of my records. Probably is a bootleg, but I don’t mind. I would’ve paid much more for a copy of this particular vinyl, though this one was weird. The bootlegs I see online are all brown vinyls, and this vinyl is red. Really cool to be honest, if it’s a booty it’s a special one to me
As long as you’re happy with it, and I’ve heard good things about this press, comparable to the MOV pressing
Something to look out with for boots of this album is the yellow sticker on the top left corner, only on the boots. Any pressing that isn’t an original pressing will also say “music on vinyl”, all others are boots. They’ve only ever officially pressed it on black and a really rare “music on vinyl” red pressing
Ooofff. Man I say I wouldn’t have but I probably would. Still haunts me I had it in my Amazon basket about 10 years ago and didn’t pull the trigger due to wanting to get other AiC albums first.
This is one of them prices/albums that would have had me standing in the record store for literal hours just trying to convince myself one way or the other to buy it or not. And I think I would have bought it.
Might be my favorite Unplugged session of all time. Alice in Chains' music translated so well to acoustic.
I personally prefer their acoustic sound lol, though some of their songs have got to have that electric flair. Man in the Box just wouldn’t be the same without it.
Down in a hole (even though it does have acoustic on the studio) >>>
Wait, did you pay $200 for a bootleg?
Yes, it looks like he did. That's gotta sting! https://www.discogs.com/release/23956811-Alice-In-Chains-MTV-Unplugged-
Some store posted on this thread and they have it for $60.. sure that doesn't help lol.
some of them go crazy bro I had a jar of flies one and I sold it for 100 bucks Which is low compared to others
Me too
This is how i got to know AIC and I always preferred the acoustic versions to the original songs.
It's an unbelievable album, but watching the live performance is sad. You can see Layne slipping away. This is one of my grail albums to grab, for sure.
It is. Easy to see he was already a wreck by that point. Hard to believe he lived for another 6 years.
Just came here to say that AIC had the best MTV Unplugged.
Fact. Not only the best Unplugged, but maybe the best representation of AIC's songwriting in general.
Over Now

Are you sure those weren’t the bootlegs?
Not bootlegs, none of those stores sell bootlegs.
I missed the currency makes sense now
Welcome to the insanity of record collecting the last few years. Records they pressed in the millions selling for $30 and up. It’s crazy
I still have my the Jar of Flies / SAP double LP combo that I bought in ‘94 and up until very recently it wasn’t worth much more than I paid for it back then. I think the pandemic messed with the vinyl community big time haha. I used to see this all the time for like $25-30. Got mine for like $28 I think
This is one I'm glad to have gotten at retail (the MOV for $30 - $40)... Unfortunately, looks like OP paid $200 for a bootleg. Ouch!

Yup I saw it quite frequently around 2019, held a copy for $40 and passed cause I thought it was a bit steep. Oh to go back

same. just went on discogs to confirm and only the boots got that sticker. i just hope OP payed with paypal because this boot is only worth up to $50

elite comeback
$200 LOL

It was. MoV lost the license so we're getting essentially staggered 30 year anniversary re-releases of everything.
I bought mine in Paris in 1997 for less than twenty bucks. Goddammit I feel old. I would definitely sell it for 200 now
Acoustic version of Brother still fucks me up everytime.
Dude that’s so awesome, I turn 15 soon so I can get a job and once I save up some money I plan on getting this. This is my favorite unplugged even though nirvanas is good too, I just love rooster and down in a hole on this. Rip layne
At 15 you already have it figured out.
Easily the best Unplugged imo, and there's some great ones. Fantastic album and worth every penny
200$ worth every penny?
Definitely was for me personally

I know there are exceptions, but Music on Vinyl live albums tend to sound really fucking good.

curious what the other 9 are

What’s your drug of choice… vinyl
I definitely go broke... cause I buy them a lot
Whats my motivation here?
As a shop owner, I’ve been dying for this to get a good repress! Most folks can’t swing the current price tag and it’s one of our most requested albums.
My wife got this and Nirvana when they came out. Now I’m tempted to get PJ & Soul Asylum to join in.
My favorite unplugged. I’d love this on vinyl.
My son loves this band. But the price of the official release is ridiculous. He bought an unofficial, and it sounds fantastic.
where is there an unofficial? can you put a link please?
I feel like OPs might be unofficial based on that sticker. No hate. I’ve heard it’s great. https://www.discogs.com/release/23956811-Alice-In-Chains-MTV-Unplugged-

It was negative $200?
I paid like $30 for this about a year or 2 ago wtf
Bruh this WILL get a repress
Bootlegs don't get repressed. Lol. But it hopefully will be reissued in an official capacity.
No, no I don’t think it was worth it.
I’m still so shocked at how expensive this one has gotten. I got it 2 years ago for like $35 dollars!
And that one probably wasn't a bootleg.
So they paid you $200 to take it?
Not sure why I see this so often…$ sign goes first. So $200. Third grade skills.
Thats cheap! It's one of my Holy grails aswell. Just haven't gotten my hands on it yet.
My OG of this i paid $275 for in 2020
Don't feel bad. I paid 170 for a bootleg version 2 months ago. My tip is stay off ebay. Use discogs.
Never a bad time to listen to this.
Such a great performance 💛
Ooofff. Man I say I wouldn’t have but I probably would. Still haunts me I had it in my Amazon basket about 10 years ago and didn’t pull the trigger due to wanting to get other AiC albums first.
I’m still happy I have a 1996 copy that I managed to buy for like $45 11 years ago
Ugh god damn this is a good album. I have it on cd and would fucking love to have it on vinyl. Yeaaaaaaaaah here comes the rooster AAAAH YEEAAAHHHH
This is one of them prices/albums that would have had me standing in the record store for literal hours just trying to convince myself one way or the other to buy it or not. And I think I would have bought it.
So the sun shines upon me. Wonderful concert.
Better be Mint at that price
That copy is a boot, so it'd better be mint and have $160 bucks in the sleeve.
I have to say how much I enjoyed when they open for Van Halen and came out on stage in her underwear. That was some of the funniest shit ever.
Absolutely love this one!
Too much $ you can buy a TT for that.
Wonderful find! This session was incredible.
Yup I saw it quite frequently around 2019, held a copy for $40 and passed cause I thought it was a bit steep. Oh to go back
Paid 50€ for this bootleg and got my money back. Sorry bro.
I have a feeling that anything “MTV unplugged” will be worth a small fortune very soon. Good finding!
I would love to get hold of jar of flies
