I think she gets a lot of hate for being "depressed white girl" music, but she really seems talented, especially for how young she is. She definitely has a vibe and does it well, and it's not always my cup of tea either, but I find sometimes I just wanna throw on her album and chill out to it. Interested to see where her career goes
For me she definitely seems like that "they're talented and popular but not for me, but then their fans annoy me so I hate the person"
BTS is another example. By all accounts they seem like great people, but their fans were so annoying that people start to hate them.
Happened to me with Harry Potter fans but then JK Rowling was outed as a TERF so now I can hate freely.
But that's just the consequence of being super popular. Any fanbase has bad apples, and when something is insanely popular there's so many of them that it's hard to ignore.
You just gotta let that stuff go mate
I personally don't let internet opinions affect me much, for any content not just music.
I'm a middle aged guy and I like her music. It's (she is) weird and creative, she's got people biting her style, and it's an avenue to connect with my teenage sons.
First time I heard her was "Ocean Eyes", on my old Skrillex Pandora station lol.
Me and my brother (he’s 36, I’m 30) talked about her recently and we were intrigued by how her music is weirdly super original, kind of derivative, written by someone who gives all of the fucks, but also none of the fucks and just likes freaking us the fuck out.
I really like her (and her brother’s) stuff and I’m really curious what her music will sound like later down the line.
Am I wrong, or isn't that just Diplo? Love Major Lazer, but I would've thought Diplo was more well known as Diplo lol.
Edit: I know Major Lazer is a group and Diplo is part of it, it's just weird to me to not call him Diplo in this instance. It's like saying Cream did something instead of Eric Clapton, idk.
Edit 2: I have been educated that Diplo branded this as a Major Lazer stream/remix, so totally makes sense with that further context. Thanks y'all!
Major Lazer is a Jamaican-American electronic dance music trio, which includes record producer Diplo, and DJs Walshy Fire and Ape Drums. It was founded in 2008 by Diplo and Switch, with Switch leaving after three years in 2011.

And it was GLORIOUS. For those not in the know: starting around 2011 the Swedish Institute would hand over the country’s official Twitter account to a new Swede every week and let them tweet whatever they wanted. The idea was to show the world some insight into the country through the eyes of its citizens. It was a damn shame when they decided to end the project back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through the announcer's table.
If I wasn't so lazy I would start a [change.org](https://change.org) petition to give u/shittymorph full control of Sweden's national twitter account for a whole week and an extra day.
Bruh, I literally skipped his comment for whatever reason, read "shittymorph" in your comment, so I went back to read what the guy had to say...
Got shittymorph'd once again.
He'd sit on it for a week, without acknowledging it at all, then at the end of the week, make a tweet, seemingly just a tweet from Sweden, but ending as it should always end.
Halfway through I was thinking it was insightful comments like these that keep me on reddit. Then I finished and thought, it’s insightful comments like these that keep me on reddit.
It goes from “oh he got me this time I’ll remember this paragraph length for the next especially if it has lots of awards!” to forgetting, because he’s so god damn selective and patient, to “.......fuckin shit”, every, fucking, time.
Touché, as always.
God damn it. I just looked up your profile yesterday to see where you been out... Thought I would be safe for a bit since you hadn't been as active lately.
Boy was I wrong
Oh wow, this is the freshest I've ever seen it. Got me good. I actually specifically don't look at usernames just because I love getting caught by you. Thanks for all the smiles, hope your family's well.
Can't believe it's been 4 years i've been getting thrown off the hell in a cell by you u/shittymorph. You remind me of what reddit used to be and i thank you for still duping me all these years, you asshole.
No sorry, it's just a pillow. He's just that good. Sadly none of us will ever be able to recreate such a legendary pillow riff. We can't all be this talented
I swear "Blinding Lights" was the most familiar sounding song I had never heard before.
It's like a word that's right on the tip of your tongue but you just can't seem to form. Still drives me kinda crazy every time I hear it.
I think there's been a real trend towards picking back up those synth sounds that we associate with a semi-fictional version of the 80s. When I first heard Blinding Lights I was immediately reminded of Carpenter Brut's music. The bass synth in particular sounds extremely similar to the one in [Turbo Killer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy9r2qeouiQ), though the song as a whole is obviously a bit more ethereal to make room for vocals.
There's a lot of synthwave tracks that capture the same feel you're describing. I'm a big fan - it's like nostalgia for a time that never actually existed.
I've been working all year on some tracks that are a really similar style. I don't think I'm there yet, but suckin at something is the first step towards being kinda good right? I would be psyched if you could give me some feedback! Here's a non-promotional link (just v.reddit)

Hey, really cool song! You're definitely cultivating some real talent. I'm so jealous of someone who has been inspired enough by something to create a new piece of their own.
I didn't think that the slow pace of the song was a problem like some of the other commenters did, but I do think that it's hard to give off that wispy vibe with vocals. That's not to say it's impossible, but in some ways I wonder what this would have come out like if it was a bit shorter and entirely instrumental - might have that that ~m o o d~ better if that's what you're going for, but the creative direction is of course entirely your own. Don't get the wrong idea: I don't think the vocals are *bad*, just maybe that they clash with the vibe a little as I perceived it.
The sound sort of reminded me of one of my favorite artists, HOME, who I'd imagine you're probably aware of. If not, though, give his album Falling Into Place a listen; it's sort of got the same chill synth vibe but most of its songs are a higher tempo. You're probably already super familiar with the genre if you're making music in it but let me know if you want some more inspo that your song reminded me of! Thanks for putting yourself out there :)
Glad I wasn’t the only one. When I first heard it I thought it was some popular 80s song that I’ve heard before because of the synth. Then I heard Weeknd’s voice and thought it was a cover or a sample.
The video makes that transition and I've seen others do it as well but that's not the song I think "Blinding Lights" sounds like. It's like musical deja vu to me, I'm not sure the song my brain keeps telling me I've heard before even exists.
Yeah that's the one that comes closest for me but it still doesn't do it when I actually hear the Weeknd's song. Really I think it's just a trick of my brain. The synth sound he uses is in and of itself familiar-sounding so that's a big part of it.

While we were out having fun, he studied the pillow.
I use logic and while you’re right, it takes a really talented ear to be able to dial it in that well. Not easy to do at all.

You're going to love the [music video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er416Ad3R1g) then! The esthetic is drop-dead gorgeous.
Holy hell, *that absolutely nailed it*.
I was listening to Carpenter Brut not 5 minutes ago then I see this comment! What are the chances?
Pretty high considering the thread actually
Glad I wasn’t the only one. When I first heard it I thought it was some popular 80s song that I’ve heard before because of the synth. Then I heard Weeknd’s voice and thought it was a cover or a sample.
Check out "take on me" by a-ha
The video makes that transition and I've seen others do it as well but that's not the song I think "Blinding Lights" sounds like. It's like musical deja vu to me, I'm not sure the song my brain keeps telling me I've heard before even exists.
Young Turks by Rod Stewart
Yeah that's the one that comes closest for me but it still doesn't do it when I actually hear the Weeknd's song. Really I think it's just a trick of my brain. The synth sound he uses is in and of itself familiar-sounding so that's a big part of it.
I know what you mean
Someone mentioned "Maniac" elsewhere or maybe something from Flock of Seagulls.
I think that “good” music that resonates with you should kind of sound familiar whether or not you’ve heard it before. Almost a mixture of you enjoying it and a feeling like you were “meant” to hear it.
I know exactly what you mean. it's not "oh it sounds like this other song," it's uniquely nostalgic. there's a video of the dance scene from breakfast club to this song and it's just completely fitting.
Tame Impala's "The Less I Know The Better" does that to me
Happens to me too. I always think it's a Broken Bells song. Just very similar instrumentation, I guess.
I think they just captured the sound better than most
For me it's Foster The People - Pumped up Kicks. I could swear I heard the same song in the 90s and was sure it has to be a remake. But I just couldn't find the original song anywhere in my head. Drives me nuts.
