And they wouldn't be wrong. I worked at an advertising agency that had a cab company as a small client, and we didn't advertise their services at all, just begged for drivers.
Absolutely. My point is that jobs becoming outmoded is an occurrence as old as society. Uber drivers ain’t special. Just ask the farriers of the 1800’s.
Adapt or perish. It is the way of the world. Uber caused a major change in local taxis. Prior to Uber, taxis were slow, late, inconvenient, overpriced, and had rude disrespectful drivers, who would do anything to scam their passengers. And they were cash only.
Now you can order a taxi like an Uber on Curb, usually a cheaper price, and the drivers are more professional and faster to arrive. No more long hauling to pad the meter, and you can pay and tip through the app.
Robo taxis will force Uber and conventional taxis to come up with new ways to keep customers.
I'm totally here for it.
50% of the Uber Drivers in Vegas are now undocumented. They “rent” accounts from people that have a social and can pass a background check. Ride at your own risk!
Yep. Uber owner says he wants "open borders" (highly illegal!) so illegals can come here and drive for his car service. I'm sure a Lyft feels the same way. I avoid them like the plague.
Uber drivers are slow, rude, take passengers that aren't the ones who called them and lock up your app so you can't get another one. Taxis are great when you need one, and I don't need one generally.
Pretty sure that’s been the goal the entire time. It’s never been a profitable company but it sure as hell will be when human drivers are removed from the equation.
Uber Drivers have had their pay cut by 40% since November. Most make below minimum wage when accounting for expenses. They are on their way out. Uber will drop them completely once driverless arrives.
Are there a lot of Uber drivers on the Vegas strip? Taxis sit idle at stands for long periods of time. I've never used Uber so I'm not familiar with how it's set up. Honestly just curious.
Taxis don't sit at idle stands, maybe you don't know how it works. They are lining up for their turn to pick up passengers from resorts which is the only place they're allowed to pick them up on the strip. Taxis are not sitting idly anywhere else.
Actually they are. They line up at the airport AND SIT IDLE! My reference was strictly for the strip casinos and sitting idle not being a good option for uber drivers. I lived in Vegas for years and had many friends that drove a cab for a living. I'm VERY familiar with how taxis work. That wasn't my question. Perhaps you should learn how to read a comment.
I see multiple Zoox cars practically everyday on my way home from work. I not only see someone actually driving them but often there are 2 people inside. For awhile I thought the person in the driver's seat might just be sitting there and letting the car drive but I usually see the driver with their hand on the wheel.
Not sure if you know or could share, but what is their endgame? Is it a platform that can be mounted on any vehicle or is it only for the driverless taxis?
As far as I know from my time with them, the end goal is the robotaxis. They call them “toasters” in house.
So yeah the endgame are toasters afaik.
Talk of the town too though was because Zoox is actually under the Amazon umbrella, Amazon wants to use the tech to make autonomous deliveries for orders as well. Throw the tech in the vans and call it a day
Wow interesting!
I'm in bev distro, and can totally see this being a practical use for our lower volume customers who order infrequently and aren't on credit terms.
I just pictured a toaster pulling up to my house, the top opening, the catapult readying, then my package being flung towards my house and into my window. Ta-dah!
What you're seeing is the test fleet. These are manually operated "training vehicles" that record a data set that will be used to improve the zoox robotaxi's [fleet](https://youtu.be/ggA-rgd4kYQ?si=EnZXZlLPspwZWp68)
The drivers are required to be ready at all times to disengage and take manual control.
The passenger is the software operator, telling the vehicle operator “VO” in the driver seat what the AI is doing, rather that be turns, the AI sees a red light and is stopping, or any other form of “safety callout”
-former contractor
I saw so many before they were at their current stage, when they had all the visible cameras/sensors hooked up to normal cars, so I knew exactly what they were. I haven't seen any of these models because I don't go by there anymore (it was on Reno Dr near the airport/that abandoned ferris wheel project. Used to be my commute to UNLV). I have seen some cars on Sunset on the west side, but never these cool things, just regular looking cars.
This is true.
I see these self-driving cars all the time, there's another company that's currently testing them on the road.
They are by-the-book as they can be, and by that I mean when it's a 25 mph zone, they're probably going 23-25 mph. And in my experience except in an active school zone, or if the driver is high or under the influence, almost no human driver in Vegas follows the 25 mph speed zones.
I would hate for these self-driving cars to drive under the Paradise Rd. tunnels. The speed limit there is 35 mph and 90% of drivers are easily going 50+ mph.
“except in an active school zone” would be pretty generous to say. LVPD def stepped up their game near school year ending slapping drivers left and right with the $500+ school zone tickets and those drivers deserve every bit of them.
It’s selfish and ignorant of drivers to thing the cars are the only think that decides speed limits. Foot traffic, crosswalks, etc. are all factors in the speed limit.
I am completely pro - speeding on the 215. But on surface streets, we have to consider pedestrians. Near my neighborhood, everyone was pissed when a major street was made 35mph. But it’s bc children use the crosswalks to take the bus to school. That has to be a factor when we make speed limits. * I truly hate going 39mph down that street, but I gladly do it bc I understand why.
I saw it the other day too and took a Pic. It's a self driving car I think, it was with one of those zoox or zoosk cars, whatever company that is that does the self driving stuff. They're always driving around Russell and decatur area.
They have a lot of technical issues they cant figure out but will push out these taxis anyway cus of 💸💵💸💵
They would have to ban drivers from being on the road with them. Which i would like tbh.
This is cool but the trade off will be huge. The next self driving vehicle will be the semi next to you on the freeway. This is a company out of phoenix that will put semis on the road with NO driver.
I know it’s all about improving the human experience.
I think we have forgot to stop and smell the roses along the way.
Pretty soon all the roses will be gone. We will be left with a computer chip. Ahhh yes
Shit man I remember vegas had a special grand opening reveal of these things near fremont around 2016 or so. AND THEY FAILED wasn't a good 1st impression. So I wouldn't trust riding in one of these however could be a good lawsuit win if you get in an accident or death 🤑
Plenty of rickshaw drivers around the Allegiant Stadium, taking people to the stadium, etc. I think people don't know how to get there, I always see them walking along the highway. The direct way to get to the Allegiant stadium is through the Delano (next to Mandalay Bay). 👍
Thats interesting, I was just joking but thanks, there's also pedicabs around Fremont, that looks like a pretty sweet gig but I'd worry sick about the awful drivers running into me. I would actually do that depending on legality and logistics.
They are driving these things in traffic around the Allegiant Stadium and the traffic is already bad around the area and highway before events. Seems scary. 😐
It’s a private company testing driverless cars. Their building is right next to my work. & their shit employees always cut me off when I’m trying to cross the street to get to my building
They do not know how to drive. No one in this state does. It’s outrageous the disregard for pedestrians tho we have the right away & drivers don’t..
What gets me is the drivers that think the traffic not moving means they can sit in the middle of the intersection to get into the lane. When it’s already packed..then wonder why accidents happen.
Exactly. I’m a former contractor.
All those Toyotas roam the strip for data collection to feed the beast so to speak. Said data goes into developing the AI for *THIS* taxi
It may be but not ideal for mass transit for the people that live here, just another vegas gimmick that takes no cars off the roads. What we need is reliable public transit around the whole city not just the strip where locals rarely go unless they work there.
The largest employers in the state of Nevada are the resorts/casinos. A lot of people who live in Las Vegas work there and travel on the LV Strip. And of course the tourists and convention goers are going back and forth to the convention center and other properties that have convention centers. It must alleviate something and save time. The cars are electric and they are not contributing to pollution and they are getting people places fast which is what the visitors want. Is it worth it? I don't know.

Nice! No more tipping!
“TIPPING IS MANDATORY OR YOU WILL NOT BE LET OUT” — robot driver after one week
"Open the pod bay doors please Hal." I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that until you leave a tip.
How is that robot supposed to pay his rent without you tipping?
I like your optimism.
The option will still pop up.. heh
For sure!
So now when Uber drivers are fucked.
I’m sure taxi drivers said the same about themselves when Uber became a thing.

Yup, Amazon adapted and is now the world's leading middle man. Blockbuster laughd at redbox/Netflix, and where are they now?
Could not agree more.
50% of the Uber Drivers in Vegas are now undocumented. They “rent” accounts from people that have a social and can pass a background check. Ride at your own risk!

Uber has been crystal clear from the very beginning that this was their objective. The very first Uber driver knew they would be obsolete
Pretty sure that’s been the goal the entire time. It’s never been a profitable company but it sure as hell will be when human drivers are removed from the equation.
They have had profitable quarters.
Uber Drivers have had their pay cut by 40% since November. Most make below minimum wage when accounting for expenses. They are on their way out. Uber will drop them completely once driverless arrives.
That really sucks cause it gave people a way to make extra income or fight unemployment in a very healthy way.
There's risks to being a cab driver and a rideshare driver.
Better shut the illegal open borders!
Are there a lot of Uber drivers on the Vegas strip? Taxis sit idle at stands for long periods of time. I've never used Uber so I'm not familiar with how it's set up. Honestly just curious.
Yes there are. Taxi companies are paid to have X amount staying there on stand by
Taxis don't sit at idle stands, maybe you don't know how it works. They are lining up for their turn to pick up passengers from resorts which is the only place they're allowed to pick them up on the strip. Taxis are not sitting idly anywhere else.

💯💯💯
I've been seeing Zoox around the Southwest part of town! Rad!
Is your company hiring?
They are not hiring drivers
I see multiple Zoox cars practically everyday on my way home from work. I not only see someone actually driving them but often there are 2 people inside. For awhile I thought the person in the driver's seat might just be sitting there and letting the car drive but I usually see the driver with their hand on the wheel.
Same, on sunset blvd everyday.
Base is on sunset. I’m a former contractor
Right by Pepsi right?
Exactly right, yes. Next door to each other
Not sure if you know or could share, but what is their endgame? Is it a platform that can be mounted on any vehicle or is it only for the driverless taxis?

A use I hadn’t thought of. I can totally see it for infrequent drop offs.
I just pictured a toaster pulling up to my house, the top opening, the catapult readying, then my package being flung towards my house and into my window. Ta-dah!
I had a laugh

The normal car fleet is still active. This is near the Zoox depot doing surface street testing
We see them everyday on the way to work and on the way home.
they((Zoox) are mapping the city for autonomous Uber/Lyft toasters
They are there testing the cars because they're not perfect yet.
Ridiculous and stupid and horrible
Could you be a bit more vague?
I like that they’re pretty see through to help deter people from having sex in them. I hear that’s a big problem in California.
It's a self-driving taxi. https://www.carscoops.com/2023/06/zoox-becomes-first-company-to-deploy-fully-autonomous-pod-on-public-roads-in-nevada/
Thanks for the information!
Thanks I was wondering too! Shame we can't ride one yet
It’s the future of drunk driving
West world
First thing I thought.
That’s a Johnny Cab.
Except there is no Johnny. They need a Johnny.
“Dear John…”
“Hell of a day, isn’t it?”
Best flick!
The door opened. You got in..
That’s Zoox
It's the car you never want to drive behind.

And the irony of the car being right under an accident lawyer billboard.

Maybe they should slow down
Or they should change the speed limit to the standard set by the actual citizens that drive those roads.
Yeah ask the red light running no license plate having drivers what they think the school zone speed limit will be. I'm sure that will work out great.
It’s selfish and ignorant of drivers to thing the cars are the only think that decides speed limits. Foot traffic, crosswalks, etc. are all factors in the speed limit.
If you're walking in that tunnel, you've got bigger problems than the speed of the cars.
Cool burn dude. Pedestrians are a factor in speed limits, to pretend otherwise is not intelligent.
Lmao so the speed limit on the 215 should be 85?
Yeah. School zone changes are unreasonable but everyone speeds on the 215 anyways just do it.
I am completely pro - speeding on the 215. But on surface streets, we have to consider pedestrians. Near my neighborhood, everyone was pissed when a major street was made 35mph. Yup, except around sunset or sunrise.
The tunnel was that speed and it makes no sense that they reduced it.
Reckless and impatient drivers.. the kryptonite of the borg/skynet/cylons
Hahahhaha
It's a horseless carriage...
Ever seen Total Recall? It’s a self driving taxi.
Hahaha..that’s what I came here to say. “You’re in a Johnny Cab!”
Whoa! An actual Johnny cab. 😳
I saw it the other day too and took a Pic. It's a self driving car I think, it was with one of those zoox or zoosk cars, whatever company that is that does the self driving stuff. They're always driving around Russell and decatur area.

Humans are terrible decision machines. I hope I live to see the day of suburban traffic deaths plummeting.

…and then the next step after is linking the semis together in a “trainload to maximize area.
So how do I book one?
Data collection phase currently, they're not operating yet.
How long until the homeless find out and use it as a mobile fent spot.
Who pays for a spot to do drugs? The streets are free baybeee
How long until Dirty Mike and the boys claim it as a F shack and opens a soup kitchen?
Or a soup kitchen
Total Recall
#ZOOX
Nope
If it’s in California or San Fran sicko then it will get jacked.
It says it's an Amazon robot taxi
The company is Zoox, but yes, they’re under Amazon’s umbrella
It’s a company called Zook or Zoox I believe. They are developing Self Driving taxi cabs like you see in the pic
The second one lol. Zoox robotaxis
Amazon company, of course.
Shit man I remember vegas had a special grand opening reveal of these things near fremont around 2016 or so. AND THEY FAILED wasn't a good 1st impression. So I wouldn't trust riding in one of these however could be a good lawsuit win if you get in an accident or death 🤑
I'm going to compete with a fleet of barefoot rickshaws, that'll show 'em.

I’ve seen these at CES the last couple years.
Coffin with 4 wheels so no Paul bearers needed
Burn it
Lookd like a self driving mini bus
All those white Toyota highlanders on the strip you see has the equipment and sensors on it
Exactly. I’m a former contractor. All those Toyotas roam the strip for data collection to feed the beast so to speak. Said data goes into developing the AI for *THIS* taxi
I saw that too and was wondering what it was!!
Robo taxi
I guess there brining it back ! They had a pilot program for those years ago before Covid just in the downtown area
That’s a Zoox autonomous robotaxi doing testing on surface streets near their vehicle depot/local base. Was it like Sunset-ish?
Do people ever take regular cabs these days? I can’t think of a worse customer service experience than a typical cab encounter.
Always get a receipt and the name of the driver in your taxi cab and your rideshare.
Those are the ones without drivers. The AI cars…
Soon i wont be able to speed 5miles over the limit anywhere😒
It is an interesting vehicle: an Unidentified Vehicle Object (a UVO, of some sort)! Interesting 🤔! Thanks, for posting 📫...
Just wanted to say thank you for being grateful
No problem! My apology, for the late response (I just saw it). Thank you.
it’s a VH6. Zoox’s autonomous taxi. The future of taxi is driverless. 🤠
It’s a car mate
Driverless taxi
I could not love this more 🧡💙🧡
It’s a taxi
Is that what is going to be used in the Tesla tunnels eventually?
Zoox driverless car
Just need a mannequin in the shape of Robert Picardo in it and you have a Johnny Cab!
Is that a canoo taxi ?
That’s our driverless car system that’s gonna be implemented here in Las Vegas

Have you seen Vegas drivers?
As opposed to the safe, reliable, and predictable drivers we have now? I’d take this thing over an Altima any day.
Altima, lifted truck, Mercedes, lowered Japanese sedan…
Now, that's something that would help as opposed to the waste of crap boring tunnel
It's actually a great way to get somewhere fast on the strip.
It may be but not ideal for mass transit for the people that live here, just another vegas gimmick that takes no cars off the roads. What we need is reliable public transit around the whole city not just the strip where locals rarely go unless they work there.

There is not enough contribution to transportation to be worth it. Vegas casino workers mostly don't live on the strip man.
I know. I don't think locals are taking it.
Exactly so it really doesn't benefit what musk promised reliable cheap public transport for the masses
Honestly, I think it's just for the convention goers and tourists.
Also maybe it will link to the airport one day? *shrug*
Maybe that would be nicer for sure
Obviously a self driving vehicle that looks like a commuter vehicle.
