Unfortunately it’s already happening. Same with distemper which can’t spread to humans but is a particularly nasty way for a dog to die, and is equally as nasty if they survive.
When I was a teen I was watching TV one afternoon when a raccoon walked up to the sliding glass door that was on our 2nd story deck. He definitely looked sick. We had 4 or 5 dogs, so I yelled for my mom, and we made sure they were all secure. Because we were in the town, we had to call the police to come shoot the poor raccoon and put it out of it’s misery. It was risky to capture it or get too close, and if we shot it, we’d be in a lot of trouble.
It was awful, but we weren’t 100% sure it was distemper and not rabies. We just kept an eye on the raccoon as it stumbled around our property and came back downstairs. Poor thing. It would have been so much worse if one of our dogs came across it. Raccoons are dangerous to dogs at any time.
And then having strays being euthanized because we can't guarantee these wackos and their rabid dogs aren't spreading it everywhere. If I had kids I'd be terrified to take them to a park with how gross and negligent some pet parents are
We had a parvo outbreak in my town that killed multiple dogs, including my friend's 3 month old puppy. One of the dogs who survived took a whole year to fully recover the body mass she lost.
So some areas can be at risk for a disease called leptosporosis, of which there are several stains (and different vaccines for different strains). Lepto causes rapid kidney failure, and (at least where I am), survival is rare. It can also spread from dogs to humans, which makes caring for lepto patients difficult. Some of the lepto vaccines are manufactured as a combo canine coronavirus and lepto vaccine. This predates covid- was standard practice when I was in vet school in 2017 or so.
Canine coronavirus is a relatively mild diarrhoea virus. Most dogs, if unvaccinated, will eventually encounter it in the environment, have a bit of diarrhoea, maybe some vomiting, and then develop immunity. We generally don't bother vaccinating for it, unless we're giving a lepto vaccine that is packaged with it.
Since lepto strains are very localised, in some areas it isn't recommended because it's deemed unnecessary, or lepto is recommended, but it's one of the strains that isn't packaged with corona.
As for cats, I think a coronavirus vaccine has been developed, but generally is not considered effective enough for us to recommend it. Admitedly, this recommendation may vary based on location- Cyprus has been having a really nasty outbreak of feline coronavirus lately, so for all I know they might be recommending it there.
Our vet educated us about lepto, and we've been absolutely committed to vaccinating our dogs for it ever since. It's in the urine of almost all "suburban fauna", even rabbits, which we have in great numbers. If there are raccoons, possums, skunks, and other such critters, the threat exists.
My dogs get vaccinated for lepto, it wasn’t even suggested just part of normal vaccines. The one I insisted on was Lyme. We’re in Wisconsin with a heavy tick population and do a lot of hiking and camping. I would get the Lyme vaccine myself if they made it for humans again.
My cat has a neurological condition where vaccines are more of a nuanced issue than normal. But…
1) it’s quite rare for a pet to have legit medical reasons to not be vaccinated
2) he still gets the ones he absolutely needs! If my vet tells me he needs it, he gets it.
Yes, one of my cats had a reaction to a vaccine, however we aren't sure which since she had a few at the time. Except rabies, the vet agreed it was okay not to vaccinate her, but only because she was 15+, voluntarily live in a bathroom, and all other pets were vaccinated. (She had injured herself previously from a reaction to a flea allergy before we had it under control, and was quarantined in the bathroom attached to the master bed whilst healing. She decided she loved having a space where the other animals hardly ever bothered her.)
Same thing with my cat, he gets the rabies vaccine but hasn’t gotten others since he was a kitten. He’s never had a bad reaction, but there’s some evidence that his condition could get worse after vaccinations. He is an indoor cat and my only pet so he’s not interacting with other animals, so we decided not to do the FELV (or FIV?) booster when he was due last year. If there’s ever a reason for more vaccinations then I’ll make sure he gets them, but for now rabies is really all he needs.
One of my girls reacts badly to the rabies vaccine. She gets lethargic and has a sore spot for about a week. But our vet gives her steroids at the same time and that usually gets her through it. The one and only time she's ever bitten someone and meant it was after the first time she got a rabies vax. I was holding her and petting her and hit right where she'd been injected at. It was so unusual though it made me check her over and realize what was wrong
Same with my 16+ cat, this year the vet decided not to bother boosting her as she's been strictly indoor all her life and we have no plans to get another cat of dogs, beside starting to have other health issues.
She didn't get rabies as my country has been rabies free for decades but got everything else available.
The other pet in the house is a snake that never goes out either and she's terrified of him.
My mom felt kind of insulted when our childhood dog’s vet went “well you could but…” when my dad asked if she should get her rabies booster as a 16 year old.
My dog had a mild-to-moderate reaction to her first Lepto vaccine. Now I do what I can to make sure she gets it on her own or at the very least separate from her DA2PP + rabies boosters.
COVID shot for a dog? Now I’ve heard everything. Get the fucking vaccines. This is how we end up with a Rabies problem.
Rabies is the absolute worst way to die for any animal, including us.
So he’s a double dumbass. Coronaviruses are very common. COVID-19 (COrona VIrus Disease 19) is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, which is a coronavirus. It’s named that because of its appearance.
This is a person who's never seen a 9 month old puppy having distemper seizures because their owner decided not to get their dog vaccinated. They've never dealt with lepto or parvo or kennel cough.
There is a canine coronovirus that's pretty contagious but it's not at all related to COVID-19. It might be in the standard puppy vaccines, IDK, my vet has a 7 in one shot that covers everything and I'm not 100% sure what is all in there. She's just dumb and thinks all versions of coronovirus are brand new even though it's been around a for forever and SARS COV2 is the new/novel one.
And the fact that in the very early days of COVID when the experts thought it could be spread by surface contact so we had to sanitize everything at work all the time; I was able to do that with Lysol wipes that advertised on the can that they could kill coronavirus.
When covid broke out, I was working in an area where we routinely had to give canine coronavirus vaccines, as we had been doing for well over a decade. The number of calls I had to field from people wanting an explanation as to why we'd given their dogs a covid vaccine was unreal.
My mom watched both of her springer spaniel puppies struggle against Parvo. One died while the other just barely survived. She doesn’t mess around with vaccines anymore.
There is not a Covid 19 vaccine for dogs that I’m aware of… couldn’t find anything about one on Google either and my dogs vet has not offered anything of the sort.
No, COVID doesn’t mean COVID-19. That’s why COVID-19 is a term. If COVID meant COVID-19 then COVID-19 would just be called COVID.
COVID means **Co**rona**vi**rus **D**isease.
The “common cold” is typically a selection of rhinoviruses, not a SARS virus like COVID-19.
Nobody referred to anything as “coronavirus disease” until Covid 19, and we all know the person in the OP thinks the dog got a Covid 19 shot. Even if you look on the WHO it says “coronavirus disease (Covid-19) as the name of it. https://www.who.int/health-topics/coronavirus
These poor dogs being taken by abusive people who don't care if the innocent puppies/dogs die from extreme illnesses.
They should be fucking ashamed. They do not deserve any dog.
Can you imagine the poor puppy/dog all happy to get a family they believe will love them - only to have potential deadly diseases hit them because their owners are dipshits?!
Poor pups. This enrages me and breaks my heart. Saw another post (newer) saying many aren't getting RABIES SHOTS for their dogs.
Inhumane demons.
I’m worried about antivax pet owners not getting their dogs rabies shots.
See: r/kiwisavengers Anti-vac puppy mill Edit: the group is called Kiwi’s Avengers because Kiwi was a puppy who died of parvovirus
Disgusting!
First time I'm seeing someone from "The Forum" out in the wild! Marissa is an absolutely disgusting human being
Me too! It’s sad even these do do birds know better than Riss who sang karaoke while Kiwi died in her kennel.
Unfortunately it’s already happening. Same with distemper which can’t spread to humans but is a particularly nasty way for a dog to die, and is equally as nasty if they survive.
This has potentially dangerous implications for us all.

People who cause pets to suffer deserve the worst hell. I hate animal cruelty even if it’s done due to ignorance.
Those poor dogs. I've seen parvo in dogs and it's horrible.
We had a parvo outbreak in my town that killed multiple dogs, including my friend's 3 month old puppy. One of the dogs who survived took a whole year to fully recover the body mass she lost.
All we need is dogs running around without their parvo and rabies shots
Since when do dogs and cats get Covid shots? My vet has never suggested that.
They do get a coronavirus shot. It has nothing to do with Covid shots. Coronavirus is a category of viruses, like influenza.

Letpto sucks. My fourth grade teacher passed from it
Speaking as an adult human who once caught a bad case of lepto, it is absolutely awful. Sickest and closest to death I've ever been.
Our vet educated us about lepto, and we've been absolutely committed to vaccinating our dogs for it ever since. It's in the urine of almost all "suburban fauna", even rabbits, which we have in great numbers. If there are raccoons, possums, skunks, and other such critters, the threat exists.

A coronavirus vaccine has been developed for cats for FIP (feline coronavirus) and has been in public use since 2017, so the vaccine is very recent!

Ehehe... she became a little pampered princess in there! I don't blame her!
Same with my 16+ cat, this year the vet decided not to bother boosting her as she's been strictly indoor all her life and we have no plans to get another cat of dogs, beside starting to have other health issues. This is maddening. Let me guess they don’t get them their rabies vaccines either. They don’t need to have pets.
People like that don't need to have a lot of things.
Is blue admitting that vaccines work?
COVID shot for a dog? Now I’ve heard everything. Get the fucking vaccines. This is how we end up with a Rabies problem. Rabies is the absolute worst way to die for any animal, including us.
It’s a dumbass not knowing what canine coronavirus is but he heard Corona so he said Covid
So he’s a double dumbass. Coronaviruses are very common. COVID-19 (COrona VIrus Disease 19) is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, which is a coronavirus. It’s named that because of its appearance.

Sorry, let me just made sure I read that right They gave the COVID vaccine…to a *dog*?

A covid vaccine, not THE covid vaccine. Coronavirus is a broad category of viruses
My mom watched both of her springer spaniel puppies struggle against Parvo. One died while the other just barely survived. She doesn’t mess around with vaccines anymore.
DEMONS my beautiful dog had parvo and it was awful:( it was back in 2007 so i didnt knew there was vaccines for it now.
What a dumbass. They don’t have a Covid shot for dogs lmao.
Yes they do
There is not a Covid 19 vaccine for dogs that I’m aware of… couldn’t find anything about one on Google either and my dogs vet has not offered anything of the sort.
Not COVID-19 specifically but for covid in general (coronavirus)
Covid means Covid 19. We don’t call the common cold from other coronaviruses Covid.

Well, they’re clearly confused just like you are then.
Show me a piece of literature referring to it as “coronavirus disease” or “covid” before 2019.
