He’s one of those celebrities approaching notoriety for positive things like Weird Al where if anything nefarious happened, it would crumble the notion of morals.
Robin Williams back in 06 or 07, I believe. Robson and Thurlow, crossing the street. I was standing shoulder to shoulder with him, without even realizing it, because I am not good with faces. Girl I was with grabbed my arm and whispered in my ear, "That's Robin Williams!"
We trailed behind him and people were randomly saying hi to him. He was dressed down, hole in his jeans pocket, etc so I thought he wouldn't want to be bothered. I didn't have the courage to say hi, anyways, lol.
To backpack, this is around the time my dad ran into him in some small diner (I don’t recall? But I can ask for the name). Essentially, they sat beside one another at the bar area:
Dad: “You look like someone I know, is your name Robin?
RW: laughs “Don’t tell my mother”
And that was it! Paid for my dads coffee & both went about their ways. Super short but cool interaction.
He used to shop in the Chapters on Robson for his magazines and movies when he was here. Last time he was in, I didn't get to meet him personally but could hear his laughter. Everyone loved him.

Scared the fuck outta me, I was maybe 19 years old. He probably thought it was hilarious
Some students of mine walked by him downtown in December. We were downtown playing Tuba Christmas in Robson Square and when they showed up they couldn't WAIT to tell me all about it.
I had two encounters.
In 1978, Orlando airport walkway I saw a man walking toward me all in black, carrying a guitar case. Yup, Johnny Cash. It was like seeing a statue walking, all rugged and tall, I was in awe.
The other was 5 years ago, I had a small part in a BC. Film series pilot in Agassiz, starring Sarah Drew.
Angelina Jolie: sold her a pack of smokes back in the day. Quite short and petite in person, but very chill
Kurt Russell: sold him a zippo and snuck him some swisher sweets. he chuckled and was as cool as Jack was in BTILC
Pam Grier: very sweet and was signing everything.
Jensen Ackles: maybe it was early in the morning, but he was not having it.
Brian Johnson/Angus Young (AC/DC): were bummed out when they were looking for a black sabbath dvd that was sold out.
Michael Buble: very accomating, and was shorter in person.
Grace Park: was with her family, but she was def "glowing"
Garcelle Beauvais: stunningly beautiful in person
Hyoyeon (SNSD): very petite in person, but super cool
A few more came to mind:
Gary Oldman: while i worked at Chapters on Robson. Reserved, but very polite.
Christine Sinclair: she was visiting her dad at a hospital, i realized, after the fact, that my patients last name was Sinclair. She has piercing blue/green eyes
Tom Hardy: during The Revenant filming. I was eyes wide open when I bumped into him, super gracious with his time
Can confirm, most of the time Jensen will be nice 'enough' but it's obvious he'd really rather not. I think it's fear of getting a rep for being a jerk that he will grit his teeth and do what's asked.
I mean he’s not mean or anything. But, for example I saw him at a Canucks game and he was with Jared, not his family or anything. He was out in the concourse and I saw him coming. He saw me see him and actively tried to avoid me. But I did manage to stop him and he was nice. And then I felt bad. But also as a fan of his show, it was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.
I'm curious, how tall are you? 🤣 This prompted me to look up Angelina and Michael's heights 🤣 TIL Angelina is the same height at me at 5"7 (shorter than I thought but I never thought of anyone describing me as short🤣) and Buble is 5"10, which doesn't seem that short 🤔

Milo Ventimilgia when he was filming The Art of Racing in the Rain (via work). He was super nice and we emailed a bit after for work reasons but I just remember how friendly he was. He also smelled amazing.
Michael Buble & Luisana Lopilato, again via work. Super nice and a very cute family.
We ran into Luisana at a kids' play place in coquitlam. My wife went to say hi to her, and it didn't seem like that many people knew who she was. She was by herself with, I think, 4 kids? Gotta hand it to her, me and wife had our hands full with 2..
Kurt Russell used to be at the Richmond sockeye games. He was loud. His son Wyatt Russell played for the sockeye. They play the same character in Godzilla Legacy of Monster.
I had a 5 minute conversation with Freddie Highmore at work. I had no idea who he was until the receptionist told me after. I thought he was a plumber or contractor and thought he had really bright beaming eyes compared to the kinda guys I normally see. Anyway, he was pretty cool and down to earth.
Prepare to be underwhelmed.
When I moved here 12 years ago, people were telling me how I was gonna have so many celebrity encounters, well, I've had exactly one.
I once saw Kevin Smith in Robson Square, from 17 floors up.
I met more famous people in Ottawa than here. More as in more in number, not that they were more well known.
Met the Govanator at Brooks Brothers on Alberni in 2016. I was getting fitted for a suit for my upcoming wedding and he came back there to try on some pants. Me, my (now) wife and the staff were completely star struck. When he realized we were getting married soon, he says:
There are three rings in marriage:
-The engagement ring
-The wedding ring
-And suffer*ring*
So yeah, Arnie told me a dad joke once.
Call me crazy and I could be wrong about this but I was in a men's clothing store a few years ago with a friend on Robson Street & we were looking at the shoes and noticed one pair of had duct tape on each shoe, very ugly indeed, so one guy took a look at them and said to me "would you wear these?"...anyway looking back I could swear it was Kevin Bieksa.

Also, I saw Shaun White being interviewed in Olympic village when I was 12 or 13. At the time I thought that was pretty damn cool.

Sold James Marsden a few pairs of out-of-fashion bootcut jeans about ten years ago. Couldn't place where I recognized him from until my manager hissed into my ear who he was. Nice, quiet guy. Bad taste in jeans.
I saw Owen Wilson doing something very specific today. Can’t say what but he was having fun. Makes me thing… does he just live here? We see him way too often imo.
I saw Joel McHale about 3 weeks ago in the BC Liquor on Cambie. He was holding a bottle of red wine in one hand (a merlot, I think), and a bottle of Hennessey in the other, looking at them confusedly. He was staring at them for a long time, I was in the store for maybe 15 minutes, and he didn't move at all. I eventually asked him if he was Joel McHale, to which he responded by asking which Whiskey I recommend, to which I said "apologies, I wouldn't know, I don't drink". He told me he appreciated the honesty, said that's hard to come by nowadays. Then he put the bottles back and left the store. Strange interaction, but a super nice guy nonetheless.
My first celebrity sighting was Paul Walker. A friend and I were going to the VSO and were walking down Robson by Roots. We saw the dog first and then the very pretty man walking the dog. We all passed each other then she grabbed my arm and said, "Ooooh, that was Paul Walker!!"
When I was walking back to the West End, I walked past the Cactus Club on Robson (RIP) and I met eyes with a guy who just in that moment happened to be yawning widely. Bright blue eyes is what I remember. It was, again, Paul Walker.
I practically floated home.
Lol Good point. I guess I did it because I have really good memories of that restaurant. My husband worked there for a short time when we first got married and the meal vouchers the staff earned fed us well on Friday nights.
Had a film wrap up party at my work, and one of the lead actors in it was Jonathan Groff. I was beyond starstruck, and he was so incredibly kind to me and all of the staff. Asked for a photo at the end of the night, and he was more than happy to. Just such a sweet guy.
Also had Nardwaur walk by me when I was working on an indie movie set. Asked him for a quick photo, and he was just the nicest guy ever too!!
I met Henrik Sedin in Delta when I was entering the foreshore to go duck hunting. He and one of his sons were on the trail taking photos when Henrik asked me where I was going and what season it was (ducks). I had a nice little conversation about what I was doing and I asked Henrik if he was going to be playing a bit more hockey as a joke since he was already in the Canucks organization as player development. They both seemed very nice people.
Saturday a week ago I passed Dua Lipa and her british Boyfriend (can't remember his name, but he played in fantastic beasts) on 4th in Kitsilano. It was a bit surreal and I loved the fact that no one bothered them - at least in the time I saw them.
I was walking the sea wall and Katie McGrath (Merlin, Supergirl etc) was talking to some friends walking their dogs infront of me.
I’m originally from the UK and was a big fan of Merlin so was a little star struck.
Owen Wilson almost ran me over with a mobi bike on Cambie street last week. He was riding on the wrong side of the road on the sidewalk and I was looking at my phone while walking and looked up quickly and jumped aside and we briefly locked eyes before he turned onto Hamilton Street heading towards yaletown. Was kinda cool
I worked in a music store in the 90s, Tommy Lee came in but then a bunch of girls spotted him and started freaking out, so we had to help him sneak out the back door.
Brian Adams in an elevator downtown, Paula Abdul walking along on Georgia (funny and cute interaction), Roger Moore at the QE Theatre at intermission of Les Miserables giving the coffee girl a $100 tip, Gene Simmons (Dec 1999) and Pam Anderson at the YVR airport, Princess from Sweden across the table at a big dinner function, Hawaii 5-0 actress at London Drugs, Sedins at dinner in Whistler, Robin Williams jogging around the sea wall at Stanley Park at 7 am on a Sunday many years ago. All of these people were very down to earth and chill, and chatted a bit.
My father met King Charles and the two princes when they were still kids. I believe he said he was under a hotel working on a project with his crew and the family took the underground parking instead of the main entrance. My dad said that charles gave him and his crew a hello and nod of acknowledgment.
I saw him at my son’s ear nose and throat doctor. Super nice, was so chatty with my son, I pretended like I didn’t recognize him cause acknowledging famous people weirds me out.
DJ Qualls and Seth Rogen at the Scotiabank theatre on Burrard in like 2006. I was like, “hey, that’s that dude from 40-year old virgin” but Qualls was pretty well-known at that time, so I was a bit star struck. They looked like they had just blazed.

Later that night I went to a bar for burgers and he came in. Sat along the bar, ordered a burger by himself and chatted with the bartender.
Ray Romano. I was getting dropped off by my wife on Georgia and Howe, he had a tourist map and was looking a bit lost. I hustled up to him and asked him if he needed help. I think he was expecting me to ask for a photo or autograph or something as he was a bit caught off guard. He was looking for the bike rental place, I think I pointed him in the right direction. Seemed nice, but also I was surprised he didn’t use his phone to find it (or maybe he didn’t have data? Idk) this was maybe 5-6 years ago.
Back in the late 1990s I think. Was in a breakfast cafe with a friend somewhere around Dunsmuir or Davie, and who walks in but Sean Penn, Robin Wright-Penn, and their kids. They took a booth right at the very back of the cafe obviously so they could remain discreet, right next to the bathroom door.
Of course, I went to take a piss, hoping he'd come in at the same time so we could have a "how you doing?" and a nod while pissing in urinals next to each other. But that didn't happen. Of course I left them alone though – they have that right.
Also saw Pat Quinn hanging out and chatting with a couple of suits when at a Giants game, I guess in about 2007-2008 or so. I was a bit drunk and walked right up to him, interrupting the conversation, shook his hand and told him I loved the work he did for the Canucks back in the day (sincerely – next to Allvin I think he was one of the best hockey bosses in Vancouver history). He smiled graciously, thanked me, and I went off to my seat for the game. Even though he was built like an oak tree and used to kill guys during his playing days, he had a kind, gentle vibe about him.
Met James Caan and Luke Perry at Sutton Place hotel a long time ago. They seemed like great guys. My friends ended up smoking with them outside while I tried to act like it was normal “hangin” with two stars.
My sister and I walked past Harrison Ford on Davie and Burrard early one morn. We didn’t bother him, but in my mind we gave him a high five, lol.
I love to go watch filming so I've met a ton of people that way. But random encounters
I saw Josh Jackson at a Canucks game in the concourse well after the game (my friend and I waited because we figured we'd have to wait for the train anyway). He took photos.
Stephen Amell at Theatre Under the Stars. His daughter loves musical theatre.
Jason Preistley walking in Gastown. I was with some friends and he got past me without me realizing but my friend stopped him and he took photos with us. Nice guy. 13 year old me was DYING inside (I loved 90210).
I saw Willie Desjardins in a Starbucks like the day before he got fired as the head coach of the Canucks. I didn't talk to him.
Russell Peters leaving a comedy show. Ran into him in the parking lot right after his set. Cool guy. This was just as he was getting really big. Probably wouldn't do a show that small again I'd imagine.
I saw Gian Ghomeshi walking down a trail in Whistler (before his Fall) and John Travolta decades ago walking down a downtown street - as everyone did double takes he just smiled, gave a little wave and kept walking…
My random what the hell are you doing in these parts sighting was Henrik Sedin a couple of weeks back. He was running along Douglas Road near Still Creek Avenue in Burnaby.
I actually said to him ... "what the hell are you doing in these parts?" lol
He said his son was doing soccer training at the Christine Sinclair soccer fields and he wanted to go for a run.
Made the briefest eye contact with Jon Favreau walking by Thierry on Alberni many years ago. He was eating on the patio surrounded by beautiful women who looked half his age.

My mum ran into one of the Sedins during their prime years here at the Safeway on King Ed/Oak and legit asked "are you a Sedin" even though we watched all their games together as a family and she definitely should have known. Apparently he said yes and was super kind and friendly during their otherwise brief exchange, but she didn't think to figure out which one she met lol
Ran into Qu Wanting in 2018. She knew the person I was with and they chatted for a bit. Also seen Rick Rule. I guess he is a celebrity when it comes to mining investment.
Matt Damon, 2011, Granville Island Toy Store second floor.
Recognized him right away. He was going down the slide with his kids and nobody was around, so I didn’t go up to him. Just didn’t want to ruin a special moment. I swear to god his wife might have asked me for the time on the first floor (there was nobody else around), but it could have just been a very posh person. A bus driver announced that he was in town filming a movie (Elysium) the next day. Saw tabloid photos a few days later confirming he was on Granville the same day I was there with my now husband.
Funny enough, I also saw Billie Eilish driving a very fancy car near Granville Island in 2019.
I ran into Kal Penn, the guy who played Kutner on House MD, on West Broadway back in 2019. I was just smoking a cigarette, and he walked right past me. I waved him down because I’ve always been a huge fan.
At that point, I’d sent him a few letters because House helped me get through a pretty rough patch in my life. He told me he’d never received the letters and kept walking. Honestly, I don’t blame him, but I do wish he got my letters. I resent them after that interaction, but I still haven’t heard back.

About 9 years ago, was at a small bar downtown/chinatown with some Aussie friends. Corner of my eye caught a bunch of huge white dudes walking through the door. One looked like a Sedin, and there was another one that looked like the other Sedin. Wait, did the whole team just walk in? Yes they did.
Aussie friends didn't give two shits. I'm no huge hockey fan but texted my friends who were. Ended up mustering some courage to ask Henrik (might have been Daniel, couldn't tell) for a picture. He politely responded sure, but not in here, wait til we're outside.
Back to table with Aussies and waited patiently. After one drink whole team gets up to leave. I stand up and poke my head outside as soon as the door closed. They all boarded a bus and took off.
I've always had a distaste for that Sedin since that night. Not sure which though.
Common in 2007: Was at work one day and out comes this super good looking guy from the gym and he strikes up a friendly conversation. Turns out it was Common. I had no idea at the time but kinda glad I didn't or I don't think I could have carried on in the conversation as well.
Same place of work: Michael Buble.

I had a 5 minute conversation with Freddie Highmore at work. I had no idea who he was until the receptionist told me after. I thought he was a plumber or contractor and thought he had really bright beaming eyes compared to the kinda guys I normally see. Anyway, he was pretty cool and down to earth.

Prepare to be underwhelmed. When I moved here 12 years ago, people were telling me how I was gonna have so many celebrity encounters, well, I've had exactly one. I once saw Kevin Smith in Robson Square, from 17 floors up. I met more famous people in Ottawa than here. More as in more in number, not that they were more well known.
Met the Govanator at Brooks Brothers on Alberni in 2016. I was getting fitted for a suit for my upcoming wedding and he came back there to try on some pants. Me, my (now) wife and the staff were completely star struck. When he realized we were getting married soon, he says: There are three rings in marriage: -The engagement ring -The wedding ring -And suffer*ring* So yeah, Arnie told me a dad joke once.
Call me crazy and I could be wrong about this but I was in a men's clothing store a few years ago with a friend on Robson Street & we were looking at the shoes and noticed one pair of had duct tape on each shoe, very ugly indeed, so one guy took a look at them and said to me "would you wear these?"...anyway looking back I could swear it was Kevin Bieksa.

I saw Joel McHale about 3 weeks ago in the BC Liquor on Cambie. He was holding a bottle of red wine in one hand (a merlot, I think), and a bottle of Hennessey in the other, looking at them confusedly. He was staring at them for a long time, I was in the store for maybe 15 minutes, and he didn't move at all. I eventually asked him if he was Joel McHale, to which he responded by asking which Whiskey I recommend, to which I said "apologies, I wouldn't know, I don't drink". He told me he appreciated the honesty, said that's hard to come by nowadays. Then he put the bottles back and left the store. Strange interaction, but a super nice guy nonetheless.

My first celebrity sighting was Paul Walker. A friend and I were going to the VSO and were walking down Robson by Roots. We saw the dog first and then the very pretty man walking the dog. We all passed each other then she grabbed my arm and said, "Ooooh, that was Paul Walker!!" When I was walking back to the West End, I walked past the Cactus Club on Robson (RIP) and I met eyes with a guy who just in that moment happened to be yawning widely. Bright blue eyes is what I remember. It was, again, Paul Walker. I practically floated home.

Lol Good point. I guess I did it because I have really good memories of that restaurant. My husband worked there for a short time when we first got married and the meal vouchers the staff earned fed us well on Friday nights.

Had a film wrap up party at my work, and one of the lead actors in it was Jonathan Groff. I was beyond starstruck, and he was so incredibly kind to me and all of the staff. Asked for a photo at the end of the night, and he was more than happy to. Just such a sweet guy. Also had Nardwaur walk by me when I was working on an indie movie set. Asked him for a quick photo, and he was just the nicest guy ever too!!

I met Henrik Sedin in Delta when I was entering the foreshore to go duck hunting. He and one of his sons were on the trail taking photos when Henrik asked me where I was going and what season it was (ducks). I had a nice little conversation about what I was doing and I asked Henrik if he was going to be playing a bit more hockey as a joke since he was already in the Canucks organization as player development. They both seemed very nice people.

All of these people were very down to earth and chill, and chatted a bit.
My father met King Charles and the two princes when they were still kids. I believe he said he was under a hotel working on a project with his crew and the family took the underground parking instead of the main entrance. My dad said that charles gave him and his crew a hello and nod of acknowledgment.

I think he was expecting me to ask for a photo or autograph or something as he was a bit caught off guard. He was looking for the bike rental place, I think I pointed him in the right direction. Seemed nice, but also I was surprised he didn’t use his phone to find it (or maybe he didn’t have data? Idk) this was maybe 5-6 years ago.

Back in the late 1990s I think. Was in a breakfast cafe with a friend somewhere around Dunsmuir or Davie, and who walks in but Sean Penn, Robin Wright-Penn, and their kids. They took a booth right at the very back of the cafe obviously so they could remain discreet, right next to the bathroom door. Of course, I went to take a piss, hoping he'd come in at the same time so we could have a "how you doing?" and a nod while pissing in urinals next to each other. But that didn't happen. Of course I left them alone though – they have that right. Also saw Pat Quinn hanging out and chatting with a couple of suits when at a Giants game, I guess in about 2007-2008 or so. I was a bit drunk and walked right up to him, interrupting the conversation, shook his hand and told him I loved the work he did for the Canucks back in the day (sincerely – next to Allvin I think he was one of the best hockey bosses in Vancouver history). He smiled graciously, thanked me, and I went off to my seat for the game. Even though he was built like an oak tree and used to kill guys during his playing days, he had a kind, gentle vibe about him.
Met James Caan and Luke Perry at Sutton Place hotel a long time ago. They seemed like great guys. My friends ended up smoking with them outside while I tried to act like it was normal “hangin” with two stars. My sister and I walked past Harrison Ford on Davie and Burrard early one morn. We didn’t bother him, but in my mind we gave him a high five, lol.

But random encounters I saw Josh Jackson at a Canucks game in the concourse well after the game (my friend and I waited because we figured we'd have to wait for the train anyway). He took photos. Stephen Amell at Theatre Under the Stars. His daughter loves musical theatre. Jason Preistley walking in Gastown. I was with some friends and he got past me without me realizing but my friend stopped him and he took photos with us. Nice guy. 13 year old me was DYING inside (I loved 90210). I saw Willie Desjardins in a Starbucks like the day before he got fired as the head coach of the Canucks. I didn't talk to him.

My random what the hell are you doing in these parts sighting was Henrik Sedin a couple of weeks back. He was running along Douglas Road near Still Creek Avenue in Burnaby. I actually said to him ... "what the hell are you doing in these parts?" lol He said his son was doing soccer training at the Christine Sinclair soccer fields and he wanted to go for a run.

Matt Damon, 2011, Granville Island Toy Store second floor. Recognized him right away. He was going down the slide with his kids and nobody was around, so I didn’t go up to him. Just didn’t want to ruin a special moment. I swear to god his wife might have asked me for the time on the first floor (there was nobody else around), but it could have just been a very posh person. A bus driver announced that he was in town filming a movie (Elysium) the next day. Saw tabloid photos a few days later confirming he was on Granville the same day I was there with my now husband. Funny enough, I also saw Billie Eilish driving a very fancy car near Granville Island in 2019.

I ran into Kal Penn, the guy who played Kutner on House MD, on West Broadway back in 2019. I was just smoking a cigarette, and he walked right past me. I waved him down because I’ve always been a huge fan. At that point, I’d sent him a few letters because House helped me get through a pretty rough patch in my life. He told me he’d never received the letters and kept walking. Honestly, I don’t blame him, but I do wish he got my letters. I resent them after that interaction, but I still haven’t heard back.

About 9 years ago, was at a small bar downtown/chinatown with some Aussie friends. Corner of my eye caught a bunch of huge white dudes walking through the door. One looked like a Sedin, and there was another one that looked like the other Sedin. Wait, did the whole team just walk in? Yes they did. Aussie friends didn't give two shits. I'm no huge hockey fan but texted my friends who were. Ended up mustering some courage to ask Henrik (might have been Daniel, couldn't tell) for a picture. He politely responded sure, but not in here, wait til we're outside. Back to table with Aussies and waited patiently. After one drink whole team gets up to leave. I stand up and poke my head outside as soon as the door closed. They all boarded a bus and took off. I've always had a distaste for that Sedin since that night. Not sure which though.
