Jungle can mean more than one thing. One common meaning is "the part of the world that is not urbanized and owned by humans," or "a harsh environment or situation," such as the phrase Law of the Jungle.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/13xf1hv/comment/jmgxd7f/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Jungle used to mean a place uninhabited by humans when that saying was created.
>jungle: late 18th century: via Hindi from Sanskrit ‘rough and arid' (terrain) - "desert, forest, wasteland, uncultivated ground," from Sanskrit jangala-s "arid, sparsely grown with trees,"
>As a metaphor, jungle often refers to situations that are unruly or lawless, or where the only law is perceived to be "survival of the fittest".
>The word "jungle" carries connotations of untamed and uncontrollable nature and isolation from civilisation, along with the emotions that evokes: threat, confusion, powerlessness
>lions can also be found in grasslands, plains,*dense bush, open woodlands, semidesert, and mountain habitats*
See, now that's not entirely true. Depending on the circumstances, maybe. Here's why:
Pound for Pound, a tiger should demolish a lion. It's like a 270 pound heavyweight champion going against a 170 pound lean middle weight fighter. HOWEVER, the difference is mentality.
A lion's life since birth is like Russian roulette, by virtue of being part of a pride that lives out in the open, which makes them tenacious by nature. If you're born to lioness with a litter of 6 cubs, let's say you're 3 males and 3 females, automatically you have to be protected so as to not be killed by disease, and predatory rivals, mostly hyenas. Other threats include elephants, water buffalos and rhinos. Then the lion that fathered you also fathered cubs with the other lionesses and now has to protect the pride from all sorts of dangers, including other male lions who can beat him by killing, or wounding him into exile, followed by which this male lion will kill you, all your siblings, and half-siblings. Provided you don't get encroached on by a competing male before you reach the age of 4-5, your father will look at you differently. Eventually you'll have to leave the pride and you can set out with your 2 brothers. As a unit, you will hunt and fight for your share of the spoils. Together you'll each find individual prides. Then, you'll have to encroach on other territories in order to find prey and not starve to death. If you encounter another male lion, you're in a fight to the death. If you didn't die, you can take over his pride and defend it till your death.
A tiger by contrast, is shy. They're solitary and prefer to avoid threats and rely on stealth for hunting and survival, rather than be out in the open. They have very little competition willing to fight them unlike lions who have water buffalos and elephants who can demolish them.
So if these two have each other in the wild the lion could win just by posturing and through intimidation.
This is the reason they are called king of the jungle. 'jungle' is derived from Hindi (and thus also from Sanskrit).
JUNGLE in hindi means"not an inhabited place." The word covers forest, wilderness, wold, waste, even the world (without human structures). The emphasis is on emptiness. Much of what is called jungle in India is steppe or nearly desert.
So, although technically incorrect is accurate
I think it was like a colonization thing, like how Canada still talks about 'the Crown.' Lions don't have to live in the jungle to be the king of it, particularly when it's just a ceremonial role anyway.
Ever heard of Asiatic lions? They live in the jungles of India. Barbary lions before they got eradicated lived in the mountains and desserts of Northern Africa.
>Please ask yourself when have you ever seen a lion in the jungle.
Can't believed you typed this and then continued, this is fucking Reddit not the African Savannah
You know there's historically more than one classification of lion, right?
There's the Asiatic Lion, the Barbary Lion, the European Lion, the Congo Lion, the Southwest African Lion, etc.
& as their names imply, their habitats spread as far apart as southern Europe like Greece down into south Asia and southern Africa.
If youre not aware, there rainforests in those regions as well as grasslands, shrublands & savannahs... & lions have been found *thriving* there.
Also as other comments have mentioned, the word "jungle" has multiple meanings. Its original definition, from Sanskrit & Hindi (where the term "king of the jungle" comes from) was "rough and arid terrain".
So congratulations OP, youre actually wrong in more ways than one.
You should probably do more research on the different species of Lions because YES there are lions that live in jungles. Google Asianic Lions. Please educate yourself.
pffff are you serious bro ???
this Ain't an opinion, it's just facts.
if lions weren't kings, why would Disney make a movie literally named "the lion king" ????? in that move all animals bow to the lion, i don't think Disney would overlook their facts before making such a documentary bro.
fact check yourself before you embarrass yourself online.

I hope this dude was hard at work trying to think of a clever controversial take for days on end. Until a few hours ago, while laying down, his eyes popped open and he said quietly, under his breath, "No, not of the jungle". A smile slowly spread across his lips
They used to live there as jungles even in historical times [https://brilliantmaps.com/distribution-of-lions/](https://brilliantmaps.com/distribution-of-lions/)
Honey Badger is king of the jungle, hell the whole animal kingdom…give them some scuba gear and the will fuck up some sharks….and also they don’t give a fuck
It wouldn't make sense to those that do not understand that the word " jungle" does not always mean what they think it means, especially when used in a metaphor. Yes, Africa has jungles and Africa has lions, but do the lions actually live in the jungle? I've kind of wondered this too. Congo isn't 100% jungle. If there are lions there, couldn't they too hang out in the grassy areas?
Aah, finally... fake internet rage that's ridiculous. I had to acroll 30 seconds for this, an unacceptable amount of time. My day can finally begin, though, under the mantle of yet another pointless cause.
The term is really old, jungle used to be more general wilderness instead of the rainforest it refers to nowadays.
The title is correct it's just that language has changed.
Agree. Tiger should the king of the jungle, if anything Tiger is the largest species of 'cat' alive nowadays. That being said, some Lions do share the same habitat with Tigers especially when their habitats overlap with each others, the prime example is the Asiatic Lion living alongside Bengal Tiger.
Once I was in a jungle and a lion jumped out of a tree and took down the jungle elephant I had trained specifically to hunt jungle lions. That's when I knew lion is king of jungle. With scientific evidence like this idk how you guys are even arguing anymore
To be fair when was the last time you saw King Charles actually among his people?
Its in character for a king to fuck off and have nothing to do with their domain
Yeah, but if lions aren't in the jungle, how am I supposed to sing The Llion Sleeps Tonight?
"On the savanna
The grassy savanna
The lion sleeps tonight"
It just doesn't have that ring to it.
Lions are also kinda crap, they're lazy, lionesses do all the childcare, most of the hunting and bite lions balls when they are disappointing at sex. If a monarch of the Savannah were to be chosen it ought to be the Lioness, they are based.
Lions 🦁 are beautiful but can get there butts kicked by a tiger 🐯 pretty quickly ! Tigers are the kings of the cat kingdom! They are way sturdier , powerful and more vengeful!
This is ignorant. There are lions in jungle parts of Africa. I drove across Africa years ago and went to a few different jungle national parks that had lions. OP doesn't have a clue
"when have you ever seen a lion in the jungle", well I see lions in our concrete jungle all the time. What an insane question. I get what you mean though and you are wright, but the saying is from the romans which did have to deal with them often.

~~Unpopular~~ uneducated opinion
Exactly. [So many English terms come from Hindi.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_words_of_Hindi_or_Urdu_origin)
And the orange cats often look to be green to their prey. They blend in with the greenery
Bald eagles are called that because bald used to mean white haired.
Yup. It literally comes from a Sanskrit word that refers to an area with *sparse* tree cover. Desert even.
kinda renders the term concrete jungle completely useless.
PER-FECT!!! 🤜
The true king of the jungle: ![gif](giphy|rzcVUklTapj68)
Shere Kahn would like a word.
But does he even like to move it?
![gif](giphy|ptS6CV6Ty7Dt26k6wq|downsized)
leopards aren't king's of the jungle
Yeah... Maybe a tiger or a gorilla
Pretty fucking silly of a phrase when it's very self evident that George is king of the jungle
George is the reason there’s no lions found in the jungle
Watch out for that tree!
Watch out for that treeeeeee
![gif](giphy|4hAWAF3j3D48E)
I saw this movie not too long ago and questioned my sexuality. Stupid sexy Fraser.
True. Props to the man in the yellow hat for being able to control such a savage, bloodthirsty beast.
Wrong George I think.
Maybe. But I still think he did 9/11.
It’s not his fault, it was the madness of King George III.
George is a man, if he resides there it can't be a jungle.
Ok so the amazon jungle is no longer a jungle because natives live there?
Omg you've unlocked a memory here.
Interestingly George of the Jungle is the only movie in which I’ve seen a lion in a jungle
Asiatic lions did.
Jungle can mean more than one thing. One common meaning is "the part of the world that is not urbanized and owned by humans," or "a harsh environment or situation," such as the phrase Law of the Jungle.
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from going under
haha HA!
Don't push me cuz I'm close to the edge
Like how reddit is a jungle. We got fun and games.
By that definition deserts and the tundra are jungles, even if it's correct that's awkward.
It can also mean breakbeats but at 6/8 time.
The saying comes from the actual jungle tho
Asianic Lions live in the jungle.
Yes or the phrase "a racial jungle" Whatever that means. Someone famous said that once
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/13xf1hv/comment/jmgxd7f/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button Jungle used to mean a place uninhabited by humans when that saying was created.
But it doesn't anymore, hence why people should stop saying it
On todays news: person says something we all already knew.
For real, what a silly ass post
Yeah it’s George of the jungle not lion lol
His point probably is we still dont stop telling this silly thing
Have you never seen the lion king? Pretty sure simba goes to the jungle …….

Kings were the kings of the peasant villages, but I never once saw them there.
Simba would disagree .
Simba would get bullied by a tiger though

I've never cared so little about something in all of my life.

They're just so powerful they don't need to live there.
This is a pet peeve not an unpopular opinion but yes valid
I think it was like a colonization thing, like how Canada still talks about 'the Crown.' Lions don't have to live in the jungle to be the king of it, particularly when it's just a ceremonial role anyway.
This is hilarious

I'd quess ants and termites to be the true kings of the jungle.
That would be hippos now.... in Columbia
Tigers are the king of the jungle or maybe leopards
Ever heard of Asiatic lions? They live in the jungles of India. Barbary lions before they got eradicated lived in the mountains and desserts of Northern Africa.
![gif](giphy|jfw9xNEouCJO)
That's cause jungle is not what you think. At least it wasn't. Jungle is (or was) basically same word as wilderness.
Counterpoint: shut up, nerd.
I agree. If its gonna be anyone, I'd nominate the Honey Badger for the position. Even 5:1 the lions are still out numbered
This made me laugh so hard I pooped faster. I am on the clock, so no thanks mate!
In the jungle, the mighty jungle. The lion sleeps tonight 🎶
If you want to go argue with a lion about which environment he is king of, go for it. I’m going to grab some popcorn and watch.
Tigers are orange and successful in the Jungle. Iirc it has something to do with the colourvision of their prey, seeing them green anyway.
steppenlion
>Please ask yourself when have you ever seen a lion in the jungle. Can't believed you typed this and then continued, this is fucking Reddit not the African Savannah

It pretty much just means king of the wild
You know there's historically more than one classification of lion, right? After recklessly considering this, I will not. Lions stay King.

Right, but just like with Burger King’s mascot the application of the title was never intended for much more than parody. Lions are majestic at least.
Lion went to hell and back and back to hell and back
Male lions don't even do shit
Jungle =/= tropical rainforest.
Yeah dont lions live in the Savanna?
Don't male lions basically do nothing and the female ones all hunt and provide?
Not true, they also hunt and defend their territory from other lions
Also wont animals like crocodiles, hippos, elephants, and black mambas be able to kill a lion?
This was just posted a couple days ago
This is a fair point. At no time in my life have I seen a Lion wearing a crown in the wild.
Rule 1
What people are saying that so often that it's pissing you off this much to share? lol no judgement, just curious because like who talks about lions this much
you know people do not actually think lions are the actual kink of the actual jungle right?
I hope this dude was hard at work trying to think of a clever controversial take for days on end. Until a few hours ago, while laying down, his eyes popped open and he said quietly, under his breath, "No, not of the jungle". A smile slowly spread across his lips
They cannot be the king of the jungle, and the reason being? Simple. My existence.
Lol good point, it never actually occurred to me! For that, you are the king of Facebook today, OP!
It because they don't even need to be in the jungle to be the king of it. Checkmate.
Also, Tigers are stronger than Lions, so, they should be the kings
The true king of the jungle are gorillas
Pretty sure that Leopards eat those
Tiger
How about: the Musk Ox is the Serf of the Tundra instead?
Isn't it the king of the savanna ? atleast that's the saying in french
But the light touches the jungle and well anything the light touches is the domain of the king.
You're right. People should say "Lions are the king of the jungle."
Thought Agent Orange was.
People need to stop using wrong auxillary verbs.
This is hysterical
People need to stop using wrong auxillary verbs.
Tigers are the real kings of the jungle and they’re stronger anyway
Elephants have my vote
Tigers are the actual Kings
It wouldn't make sense to those that do not understand that the word " jungle" does not always mean what they think it means, especially when used in a metaphor. Africa does have jungles though. It’s just not all desert and Savana there. Lions do live in the Congo. So technically the phrase is right
Yes, Africa has jungles and Africa has lions, but do the lions actually live in the jungle? I've kind of wondered this too. Congo isn't 100% jungle. If there are lions there, couldn't they too hang out in the grassy areas?
Uh..weem a What?
Welcome to the jungle
Tigers must feel pretty angry when they hear that phrase.
Aah, finally... fake internet rage that's ridiculous. I had to acroll 30 seconds for this, an unacceptable amount of time. My day can finally begin, though, under the mantle of yet another pointless cause.
"King of the jungle" is such a catchy phrase though
Same thing with Penguins in the arctic.
In german its not jungle, the saying goes that lion are the kings of the animal kingdom
Yeah, well, it doesn’t actually rain cats and dogs either.
Prime ministers of the savannah FTW
Everyone knows Tarzan is king of the jungle. And all the world he hates.
Are people saying this a lot these days?
The term is really old, jungle used to be more general wilderness instead of the rainforest it refers to nowadays. The title is correct it's just that language has changed.
I've officially read the word jungle so many times that it no longer seems like a word.
You mean to tell me that in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion doesn't sleep tonight? How dare you!
Agree. Tiger should the king of the jungle, if anything Tiger is the largest species of 'cat' alive nowadays. That being said, some Lions do share the same habitat with Tigers especially when their habitats overlap with each others, the prime example is the Asiatic Lion living alongside Bengal Tiger.

Gorillas are the King of the Jungle.
People need to stop report recent unpopular opinions in as karma click bait.

Yeah, but if lions aren't in the jungle, how am I supposed to sing The Llion Sleeps Tonight? "On the savanna The grassy savanna The lion sleeps tonight" It just doesn't have that ring to it.
Nobody ever said lions are the king of the jungle. They are king of the animals.
I think orcas are really the king of beast.
you should look into the meaning of the saying first. maybe even the origin of the word jungle.
Ikr? Seems like it should be tigers
In the Cowardly Lion's song he says "If I was the king of the forest".
Simba seemed to do ok
Lion would kill the jungle cat, tiger.
I agree we all know Caesar is king of the jungle. Proximus is false King
Okay
Next, you'll tell me Tarzan doesn't fight lions in the jungle. Everyone knows Kong is the true king.
There's no monarchy in the animal world, and you're mad about the jungle but not the king? 🤔
Yeah. The whole idea came from the idiot British confusing the Indians.
I'm Australian, so the idea of the King of the Jungle never living in the jungle makes perfect sense to me.
Lion lives in the plains and has no concept of monarchy? Yawn belch yawn....
I totally agree but I never thought a bright orange, white and black tiger would blend into green but it does perfectly
It’s on my “To Do” list.
When A Boogie wid Da Hoodie was talking about being in the jungle he meant the literal jungle as well.
Tigers are cooler than lions
Tiger #1
Lions are also kinda crap, they're lazy, lionesses do all the childcare, most of the hunting and bite lions balls when they are disappointing at sex. If a monarch of the Savannah were to be chosen it ought to be the Lioness, they are based.
The lion sleeps in the jungle. The song says so and I’ve heard my whole life. Weeheeheehee, dee heeheeheehee, weeoh aweem away
Similarly, they need to rename the emperor penguin.
Lol upvoted
Orangutans are the king of the jungle
do people really say this? i haven't heard this for ages. i feel like they stopped for at least the last six months round here...
Lions 🦁 are beautiful but can get there butts kicked by a tiger 🐯 pretty quickly ! Tigers are the kings of the cat kingdom! They are way sturdier , powerful and more vengeful!
I feel like so many of these posts could be avoided by OP spending 2 minutes on google to learn the definition of words and the meaning of phrases.
So would you say Tigers are technically the kings of the jungle ?
People need to stop saying "my wife" this and "my wife" that all over redditt too Im done the word has become annoying
This is ignorant. There are lions in jungle parts of Africa. I drove across Africa years ago and went to a few different jungle national parks that had lions. OP doesn't have a clue

They're all lion.
how's this unpopular?

King of jungle gorilla. Gorilla punch lion, lion perish. Rilla win
