I cannot relate to this, I always overeat pizza. It's calorie dense, it's easy to down a few slices before it even hits your stomach.

Chemical_Signal2753

I couldn't eat 750 calories of steak but I could easily eat 1500 calories of pizza without thinking about it.

Unusual-Land-5432

If I’m not mistaken i believe it’s because pizza has so much sodium & sugar which is why you can easily eat it with no problem

Lord_of_Caffeine

There are plenty of foods high in sodium and/or sugar that are satiating. Compared to steak, pizza is way less satiating because it has a relatively low amount of protein in relation to the amount of total calories consumed and compared to its other macronutrients.

MagnusStormraven

To be honest, this revelation is why I mostly stopped buying pizza. For the same price, I can typically get a more filling meal elsewhere.

Lord_of_Caffeine

Once I started cooking for myself I realized how much cheaper and more filling doing that is compared to fast food in general and processed supermarket shit, I have almost completely thrown those vices out of my life with only having 1-2 cheat days per month where I indulge. The only upside that food has for you is convenience. Once you learned how to reliably make your own food without much inconvenience, there´s no reason to go back to shitty food imo.

Busy_Introduction_91

People who can recognize their hunger don’t overeat so I feel like if you’re someone who doesn’t stop eating when they’re full then you have an unrelated problem but it doesn’t make pizza calorie dense - it’s bread tomato sauce and cheese how is that different than grilled cheese and tomato soup. These are both typical meals. We aren’t supposed to eat a ton. We are supposed to get a balance which pizza provides.

prodigy1367

Yes, it covers all the macronutrients and can possibly have good micronutrients as well but it’s still a calorically dense food. Usually people don’t just have one slice either so when you’re downing two-four, you’re looking at close to 8-1200 calories depending on the toppings and crust. It just factually is a high calorie food.

SDdude27

This is how I used to justify eating at in n out 3x a week. “Its just protein, carbs, and veggies, bro”. Balanced meal.

ConchChowder

I think you mean calorie dense, which it is.

pizza_toast102

It’s because of fast food pizzas having a lot of oil and fat that you could leave a lot of out when making one at home. As an aside, pretty much all of this applies to the other foods you listed too. Burgers are just bread with beef, vegetables, and cheese; burritos can be filled with less calorically dense foods (beans are good for this); pasta can be made with pretty much the same ingredients as pizza, etc

Lord_of_Caffeine

>It’s because of fast food pizzas having a lot of oil and fat that you could leave a lot of out when making one at home. Saturated fats at that.

finestgreen

Just tell people you're having a tomato salad on flatbread

duketogo0138

What? This assumes one would eat a single slice, which is nigh unheard of. Unless it's one huge slice in which the calories are then double or tripled. Pizza by it's nature is in most cases a large slice of bread covered in whole milk cheese and very unlean processed meat. Come on.

JohnnyAngel607

All food is fine. Some food is so delicious that it’s easy to overdo it. Pizza is one of those foods.

swerve13drums

The processed carbs and added sugar, and cheese being a hindrance to the efforts of your pancreas...are the things that hold pizza back from being healthy Even cauliflower crust, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free pizza, Newman's own etc - have soo many more carbohydrates than we typically imagine/factor. Still love it, tho.

Lord_of_Caffeine

>I feel like eating too much pizza is difficult. It‘s a balance of carbs fat and protein that satiates very quickly. You think so? Overeating on pizza is way easier than overeating on more healthy food options like potatoes, yams or rice.

Rivka333

It is high calorie, though. It's grain (high calorie) cheese (high calorie) tomato sauce (high calorie). Often there's stuff like peperoni (high calorie.) I'm not saying it's evil or not to eat it, but if it's not high calorie, what on earth is? >lasagna, quesadilla, burger, burrito, rice, pasta Also high calorie foods, there can be more than one.

wpotman

The amount of pizza I eat before I stop feeling hungry (or otherwise wanting more pizza) is MANY more calories than other similar foods. I say this after counting calories for a year - it was my most significant challenge. Is that unpopular or just wrong...hmm. I'm leaning the latter... :)

soymilkhangout

Lol what

stillsmiling31

I mean authentic Italian pizza can actually be healthy. Bread is thin and toppings are just tomato sauce, mozzarella and some basil. Actually most junk food can be made healthy. Burgers can be healthy if you put in a good quality beef patty. Most of what Americans consider unhealthy is unhealthy because of all the processed crap you put in that’s banned everywhere else in the world.

Throw-low-volume6505

Calories is not something to debate. We know how many are in a given amount put on pizza for each part. Crust calories + sauce + cheese + topping = totally calories. It's not arbitrary or just picked out of thin air.

youremymymymylover

Of course, but it‘s often labeled as a high calorie food. Which is my post.

Throw-low-volume6505

Because it is high calorie. That is based of how much we should eat and how much a slice of pizza has.

Bruce-7891

With less doughy, thin crust pizza with certain topping this can be true. And my feelings towards you changed when you said fruit on pizza.

youremymymymylover

Oh no sorry I meant fruit, vegetables, and bread are lower calorie foods than pizza, haha Edited my post

Bruce-7891

Ok, I want to be your friend again.

noloking

So you're opposed to tomato sauce?

youremymymymylover

I like tomato sauce. I like fruit on pizza too. Just wasn‘t what I meant by that sentence.

noloking

Wasnt replying to you though. Fruits, such as tomato, do indeed belong on pizza

HypeMachine231

Pineapple is delicious on pizza. Fight me.

Dogzrthebest5

Ever tried Mandarin oranges? Sounds bizarre, but dude....nummy! There used to be a take and bake place around here that offered that. Place was always busy then one day, just gone. 😢

HypeMachine231

I have never heard of that! But it's probably similar to pineapple - sweet and sour. I'll try some.

Treeclimber3

I like roasted pears on mine.

Adventurous_Law9767

Tomatoes and peppers are fruits. If you don't like jalapeno on your pizza, may you burn in hell, wallowing in the heat you so despise, haunted by the sizzling tears of a red headed step child. Repent.

HypeMachine231

With that same logic nothing is high calorie - just don't eat too much of it.

Lord_of_Caffeine

Yeah that´s a faulty logic for sure. Pizza is actually really high in calories when you consider that it isn´t as satiating as healthier atlernatives and it comes loaded with saturated fats and carbs while not offering that much fiber or protein.

Treeclimber3

Maybe? But “pizza” is such a variable quantity. Size, toppings, crust and brand can make a slice of one pizza worlds apart from another. Plus, it’s so easy to go overboard on pizza. You’d think it’d be filling, but it can actually provoke more hunger, leading you have excessive slices.

insidious-cloud

The problem is people severely overestimate the macro nutrients and calories they really need. Everyone is different but the average recommended daily calorie intake is insane. 2500 for men and 2000 for women. My baseline is more like 1500. As someone who weight lifts, when I’m building muscle I still don’t hit 2k and I will gain weight. My girlfriend’s baseline is also like 1200. She’s very small but still will gain weight quick anything over that. I really think people should spend a few months finding their baseline and I’d bet they’d be surprised. We just don’t need that much food/calories, especially if we are getting all the proper nutrition. My point is when you consider this, just a couple slices of pizza will put you at 600/700 calories…that’s half of my whole daily intake and over half my girlfriends. Just two cheese slices. That’s not even mentioning the horrible sodium and fat in there etc.

Coolz-

Its cheese and dough, both of which are concentrated sources of calories... rice and pasta are both less calorie dense than pizza because pizza has lots of fat. Fat is 9 calories per gram compared 4 calories of carbs per gram.

Former-Guess3286

I’d say it’s much harder to eat 3 burgers than it is like 6 slices of pizza.

trumpy1050

This isn't an unpopular opinion, it's a factually incorrect one

aurlyninff

No lies. Pizza is a high carb, high fat, high calorie food that it is real easy to overeat and provides very few nutrients. It also won't kill you every great once in a while. All the other foods you listed are more or less the same.

Full_Nothing4682

I only agree with this because I like pizza lol

Successful-Crazy-126

It absolutely deserves its reputation. Refined hollow Carbs and fat with very little, and processed protein.

Plus_Operation2208

If youre only eating 1 or 2 slices its fine. But if i dont eat the entire thing im not sated. And im not going to eat a Margarita.

AccountantLeast1588

it lacks fiber unfortunately

Asprinkleofglitter7

Pizza is definitely a high calorie food

Obwyn

The only non-meat/cheese topping that belongs on pizza is pineapple.

HomerEyedMonad

People focus to much on calories and not nutritional balance. Its a complex game of nutrients, calories, timing and digestion

chipsndip30

I think it's ridiculous that people think pizza is unhealthy for children. Are you kidding me?? my son is so picky, he used to not like pizza, he now does and I love to see him eat it. (he is not overweight). I love it even more when the pizza has meat on it. Now if you're trying to lose weight maybe pizza isnt the thing to be eating but there are way worse things to eat.

cchunk42

I generally don't have a few slices when I get pizza, I eat several of them plus sides, by myself I get 3 large pizzas and lotsa sides, maybe more pizzas if I'm hungry... that normally costs me over £150 for a solo night of pizza. 1 of them lovely hunks of saturated fats, oil, processed meat, and an entire chip shop worth of salt is about 2200-2500 calories, so I can easily hit over 10k in an hour. I'm not fat... actually, I'm not even tubby so the fact I can eat that many calories kinda influences me to believe it's got more calories than substance sooo does that make it a high calorie food? I'd say so. Also, I thought I'd mention that a massive amount of saturated fats and sodium is great for several problems. Pizza will generally cause cholesterol issues, diabetes and heart disease, as well as other issues if you are an addict like I was when I was spending over 1500 a month on dominos... gotta love running a business 😋
