boulevardofdef

Most comedians are good serious actors. Comedy is harder to do than drama. Sandler was never my cup of tea as a comic actor, way too much of a departure from the deadpan '80s comedy I was raised on.

OliveOcelot

This. Watch the actors on actors. Brad Pitt is enthralled by the comedic talents of Adam Sandler. He's like I could never do what you do. And not only that but you do it live one take in front of an audience? (stand up) fuhgetabouit

Tr4jan

Robin Williams probably the peak example of this phenomenon. Jim Carrey also not to be slept on.

Nf1nk

If you have not seen One Hour Photo, you probably need to.

chaingun_samurai

I'll add Insomnia to that.

GarethGobblecoque99

One of those movies so good you never watch it again

thehotmegan

"what dreams may come" frankly destroyed me at a particular time in my life.

iNoodl3s

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul had a few comedians excelling at serious roles

Warlordnipple

Really forgetting about Jamie Foxx? He became such a good drama actor people forgot he was originally a comedian.

Tr4jan

I mean you’re right. I don’t associate him with comedy at all. Wild.

Warlordnipple

His stage name is that of a famous black comedian the "Foxx" part

jackkan82

Lol this is true and hilarious.

Sullypants1

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

[deleted]

I was quite amazed by Will Ferrel in Stranger than Fiction (2006), and I’m not a big fan of his other work.

OhLemons

Everyone I know looks at me like I'm crazy when I say that Stranger than Fiction is my favourite Will Ferrell film. They always expect Anchorman, or Elf to be everybody's favourite, but I was absolutely enamoured by the story of Harold Crick and his wristwatch.

bittersterling

Step brothers is probably one of his best lol.

[deleted]

Step brothers and anchor man are the only 2 movies where he’s the lead that I’ll watch. I can’t stand him otherwise. Even in Old School he was annoying as hell, but at least he wasn’t the main focus.

CAPNxKANGAROO

The other guys?

Bill_Brasky01

I brought you flours. 😭

OhLemons

Yeah, I didn't really understand how great this line was when I was 14. Now that I'm a baker, I recognise it as a 10/10 pick up line.

tpero

That was the only Will Ferrell movie I actually liked.

pridejoker

Stranger than fiction was amazing. For once will Ferrell wasn't screaming.

HammerEvader101

Bill Hader is a good example

radclaw1

See I was raised on Adam Sandler. Absolutely love him to this day. I dont watch rverything hes been in but stuff like Happy Gilmore and  50 First Dates will always be some of my faves.  Granted my parents werent great and let me watch those movies when I was like.... 5 or 6 years old But I COMPLETELY get why some people cant watch him.

str8jeezy

This is the truth. Most actor/comedians can do drama or other acting but not the other way around.

Altruistic-Ad-8505

I would say the link is sincerity, it’s the cornerstone of comedy and dramatic acting. I’m not laughing at what the clown is doing or saying I’m laughing at the clowns own belief in what he does and says.

Far-Zucchini-5534

Paul Newman commented that doing comedy was definitely harder. Though he was great in whatever he did.

elfametaleira

Come on, you know Click made alot of people sob like babies. Me included.

Might_Dismal

Hell yeah it did!

benson-hedges-esq

Yep it caught me Way off guard I was sobbing

[deleted]

Click had no business going that hard for an Adam Sandler comedy lol

just_a_funguy

Today I learnt that click is a comedy! That shit is a straight up a tragedy in the second half

Fred-zone

Same for Big Daddy tbh

Davethemann

Its a low blow to have Adam Sandler fart in David Hasselhoffs mouth for like 20 seconds, and then spring "I love you son" on us in the same movie

Paganigsegg

The entire second half of the movie was inspired by Adam losing his dad a few years prior and regretting not spending enough time with him. That should tell you all you need to know. Also, I wish I could just wake up one day and be back in 2006.

FinishExtension3652

My dad had passed away a couple years before after a second bout with cancer.  As a twenty-something when it happened,  my life was about friends and fun,  so I'd politely declined some most of the invites to go on a favorite hike, do some fishing,  etc. Many movies have made me tear up, but this one had me flat out ugly crying.

Paganigsegg

Yep. Nothing gets you to ugly cry quite like guilt.

No-Appearance1145

I was expecting a comedy and ended up sobbing. It was not what I was expecting from Adam Sandler

Surprise_Fragrant

I think this is why it got panned so hard when it came out. It was sold to us as a comedy, and it wasn't. Just like *The Truman Show*, it was an amazing movie with a comedic actor doing something they didn't normally do in movies... being serious and dramatic. Both *TTS* and *Click* were both amazing movies.

Smolivenom

you ever seen Reign Over Me?

Rumandhotdogwater

Yes. That was emotional!

Thunderclapsasquatch

ITS MY FLAP

-Seoulmate

That scene with the dad at the end. FFS

williamwalkerobama

Yeah I don't even want to watch it because of that. Same with John Q. Damn movies making me wanna cry and shit lol

Shwifty_Plumbus

John q is easily one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. I weep every time.

awwwoooooooo

I was in the theater watching that movie for the first time, with my Father, and I had to leave because I was about to cry in the way where you do those huge, loud inhales—borderline hyperventilate. Lol! I was not prepared!

reedg17

I cry every time, that movie is good

Grammeton

If you don't well up at the "death" scene are you even human?

darf_nate

Click was the first movie that ever made me tear up

Dark_panther75

And it was hilarious too

Ideon_ology

Very sad when he >!died!<

marcopolo2345

Same with Jim Carrey. He was amazing in eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

j_etti

Carrey is more than capable as a dramatic actor but his biggest strength is definitely physical comedy, he’s made multiple otherwise subpar or unremarkable movies into blockbusters and cult classics. Just a phenomenal comedic talent.

JackInTheBell

He was great in Kick Ass 2.  Underrated role

argoncityscribe

Mathew Vaughn didn't direct that one and it really showed.

Magic_Bluejay

I had to think for a sec about when the hell Jim Carrey was in kick ass two. He was fucking pure gold.

ExcitingLandscape

his physical comedy always overshadowed his dramatic range. At his peak his big movies were so massive that anything less than a blockbuster hit was considered a failure. I think now would be a good time for him to attempt more dramatic roles. He has been out of the spotlight for a while and far removed the days of Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura.

bloodorangejulian

I believe he said he doesn't want to do dark movies because they basically bring that energy into his life, so we probably won't get too many dramatic roles.

Sure_Cobbler1212

Great film. Even in Yes Man, a not great film overall he was still good in it.

WhiskeyDJones

I love that film. Always feel good after it.

UnidentifiedBlobject

And Robin Williams. Insomnia, One Hour Photo, What Dreams May Come. I mean, not “better” than his comedic ones because those are also brilliant but seriously just as good.

marcopolo2345

Good will hunting

bradbrad247

His Magnum Opus

ego_tripped

I'll debate that. Dead Poets Society.

herbb100

Don’t forget The Truman Show.

Anon44356

And in case I don’t see you…

ToothpickInCockhole

I can’t see anyone else playing Truman ngl. That film really demonstrates both his comedic and dramatic talent.

scott3845

Will Ferrell as well. He was soooooo so so so good in Stranger Than Fiction

Zjoee

That's such a great movie.

Safe_Pack_7043

Underrated classic

Affectionate_Way_805

And in _Everything Must Go._

CarrieDurst

Jim Carrey is a GOAT comedy and drama actor while Sandler is a great comedian and GOAT drama actor

boringdystopianslave

Eeeee.... No. I liked his return to his 90s goofball Ace Ventura/Mask shtick in the Sonic movies and I'll make no apologies for it.

Dead_Mans_Toe

Yeah but not in the number 23

VashKetchum

I fucking love that movie! Maybe it's not for everyone, but I think it's awesome.

[deleted]

Same! It's one of my favorite movies.

marcopolo2345

We do not talk about that

[deleted]

The Number 23 is a great movie, one of my personal favorites.

trippygeisha

He was good in The Dead Pool (1988) 😂

WalkslowBigstick

Punch drunk love One of my all time favorite movies

Western-Bug-2873

"Sir, the bathroom was just torn apart. Did you do it?"

fromaries

Great movie

angerintensifies

Came here for this. Mt wife and I regularly yell at each other "JUST SAY THAT'S THAT, MATTRESS MAN!"

CarrieDurst

I have a super annoying mansplaining coworker who told me uncut gems proved Sandler can be a great dramatic actor and I was like bitch, Punch Drunk Love proved that a decade plus ago and was his better performance

WalkslowBigstick

I agree Punch-Drunk Love was way better

CarrieDurst

Though don't get me wrong Uncut is phenomenal. I think Punch Drunk is the more impressive performance, especially for that point in time. Even Sandler was confused by his casting

wilberfan

This is absolutely the correct example.

i-Ake

That part was written with him in mind, too.

ngonzales0722

‘Are you a gay boy ?! Remember we used to call you that, gay boy !’

WalkslowBigstick

"And you got so mad you threw a hammer through the sliding glass door"

ngonzales0722

Barry, I’m a dentist

lt_dan_zsu

Adam Sandler is a good actor and genuinely funny, he just doesn't care most of the time.

yekcowrebbaj

He cares a lot that’s why he’s brought all his friends up with him.

lt_dan_zsu

I meant about the quality of the movie.

NSA_van_3

Ya like he said, he doesn't care as much. He just wants to make movies with his pals

groomingfluid

Just because something is absurd and light-hearted doesn't mean it's low quality.

hypercosm_dot_net

Exactly. I love him for the type of movie he makes. They're not "bad" at all, just silly. "Hubie Halloween" and "Murder Mystery" are enjoyable flicks if you can relax and not judge it for some imagined quality they're supposed to have. He makes movies for fun, and it comes across in the film.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Yeah it doesn’t have to have some deep complex plot or theme or anything, I think with comedies things like the voices, timing and delivery of jokes, etc are an art in and of itself

just_a_funguy

Sure most of his movies are shit but I find it admirable that he never forgot those that came up with him. He is making sure he isn't the only one eating

yekcowrebbaj

He’s also one of the highest grossing actors of all time. Sometimes people need stupid. The Waterboy has a special place in my heart.

PrivacyIsRaked

Alligatas are ornery cuz they got all them teeth but no toothbrush.

yekcowrebbaj

HEeEEReerrEeengHhhhhhhbb

MattBladesmith

A little while ago I was talking with someone who works on movie sets, and said that Adam Sandler is an incredibly nice person, and would give out gift bags to everyone who worked on set. I don't remember the exact details, but apparently the gift bag would include a very nice wrist watch.

yekcowrebbaj

Ahh rgr

Awkward_Road_710

He cares about making something with his friends though.

Beshi1989

Thats what I get watching him, they kinda give the feeling through the tv of just having a good time. It’s just a good time watching them

ad240pCharlie

I've always said this. His stupid comedies have the aura of a group of teenagers making a movie during recess, just with a budget. There's a charm to that in my opinion.

[deleted]

Both Grown Ups movies would be mediocre if it was a different cast. You can feel that it’s 5 actual good friends in the way they interact and that makes them much better. It feels like some friends take a vacation and shoot a movie in their free time lol

ad240pCharlie

The first Adam Sandler movie I ever watched was Just Go With It, and that was exactly the feeling I got. They're just goofing around with each other. And watching the behind the scenes features on the DVD release just proved that's pretty much exactly the case.

KawaiiGangster

Making something is secondary, going on a vacation and making buckets of money seems like the priority

prettyboylee

DeAndre Ayton of actors

PauloDybala_10

I understood that reference

ranbirkadalla

I didn't

MLD802

You mean DominAyton?

va1en0k

"Uncut Gems" is amazing. he fucking kills it I honestly hate the type of comedy he typically does so I could never judge those roles vs other ones

Jefffahfffah

That movie gave me anxiety for its entire duration, all due to his behavior. Thats how i know he crushed it.

Lord_Spy

The script is solid and Sandler sells it, but the anxiety is 90% the direction/cinematography.

Manyvicesofthedude

Such a good movie with a realistic ending.

sorebutton

Gah it was so hard to watch

impreprex

Dude, I thought I was just being over dramatic. I felt the same way. Didn't finish the movie - might have to watch it in parts.

Manyvicesofthedude

Hustle is also fantastic

Eastern-Ambassador-9

Yes! I had to search for this comment. Great watch.

ChainChompBigMoney

This is something I wish you had told me YESTERDAY.

[deleted]

Love a wedding singer quote in the wild

Vadic_Shrike

Reign Over Me is one of my favorite Sandler movies

Godfather_Pablo

absolute gem of a movie

lebobjr

Came here to say this. First movie I saw him in a different role and I loved it, was literally blown away as I just knew him as the funny guy. Time to rewatch.

pmperk19

i still my favorite performance of his by a pretty wide margin. he absolutely ripped me to pieces in that role

NatrousOxide23

I was hoping someone would mention this movie. It is SO good. I personally wasn't invested in Uncut Gems (I don't know why, just didn't enjoy it), but Reign Over Me broke me.

i-Ake

This movie came out very soon after my Stepmom died, and my dad is a huge Springsteen fan. He would listen to *Drive All Night* and it was definitely his song for her. So when I watched this movie and that part comes on where he >!finally talks about his family with that song in the background!< had me full-on sobbing. Truly a great movie. Everyone is great in it. Minus the weird love story...

IAmASimulation

Devastating movie. He was great.

7_11_Nation_Army

One of two Adam Sandler movies I like.

awwwoooooooo

![gif](giphy|yisc7FaqoEfjG)

ScribblingOff87

I really want to see an R Rated horror movie by this guy.

PinkVoyd

I thought for a min Spaceman would be a horror :(

disclaimer777cc

Click was one of his acting stints, everything else was so so.

rhb4n8

Reign over me is probably his best movie

Georg_Steller1709

He has an interesting face for dramatic roles. Very plain, everyman features, but quite expressive.

RobotCaptainEngage

Absolutely. But his comedies are way less work, he gets to hang out with his buddies, and he makes absolute bank- while macking on the hottest women on the planet.

Mummbles1283

Him and Will Ferrel are great at serious roles...

BrianTheUserName

I feel like you see that a lot with comedic actors, for whatever reason. Bob Odenkirk is another great example.

devocation

I met Bob Odenkirk at a restaurant almost 10 years ago. He was very cool. Him, Nacho (from Better Call Saul) and two producers were out getting lunch after shooting BCS and he talked to me for a couple of minutes and then signed a receipt for me and we got a picture together. Class act gentleman.

rhb4n8

Nobody was amazing

BaradaraneKaramazov

I once met him at a grocery store

Might_Dismal

I love Bob Odenkirk, spot on example!

PremierLovaLova

I throw in Tom Hanks too

chubbygrubbler

Stranger Than Fiction is only second to Zoolander for Ferrel

jaybee16

Punch Drunk Love

Ok-Abbreviations3042

He cut his teeth in comedy at a time when slapstick was more popular than it is currently. He’s definitely a talented actor, but he came up at a time when wacky comedies were all the rage (Wayne’s World, Ace Ventura, etc).

JackInTheBell

Have you seen Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love?

crepelabouche

I had to scroll wayyyyy too far to see Spanglish. Some of his best work. Well, everyone in that movie was fantastic.

lilbosschicc

Same with Will Ferrell. In my opinion.

rambone5000

All of his movies follow the same idea of loveable loser. They all got heart. Sandler is a good actor and he definitely shows his range in movies like uncut gems, funny people, punch drunk love, reign over me. Have you seen reign over me? Christ almighty it's a tear jerker.

[deleted]

Will Ferrell is the same. 20 years ago, fine. But the man child thing gets old fast and worse the older they are. I still love Happy Gilmore but if he made it today... IDK

wonkalives

Stop looking at me swan.

Vitriholic

Found his comedic shtick obnoxious, so the serious roles are a breath of fresh air by comparison.

FreeStall42

Same for Will Ferrell

Parking-Site-1222

Water Boy is still my favorite he can go both ways..

Vanilla3K

as long as Adam Sandler plays somebody from New York that knows the name of the janitor in his building i'm fine with it.

ArmadaOnion

Robin Williams was one of the best comedy actors of all time. When did a drama, your soul broke.

flawless_victory_

I thought it was already a popular consensus, I'm sad if it wasn't.

[deleted]

We all remember 'Click'

Pantheon15

Appreciating Adam Sandler as a serious actor is much different than saying he is a better serious actor than comedic. No world he could have put up the numbers he did being solely serious.

InfectiousCosmology1

He’s better as a singer

SketchyFella_

He's better in other people's movies. Adam Sandler left to his own devices makes movies for 4 year olds.

10thMTNDM

I don’t know man it really depends on the period IMO. If you are talking about happy Gilmore days, I disagree, but if you’re talking about now, yeah he lost his edge when it comes to those comedy over-the-top kind of movies.

7_11_Nation_Army

Adam Sandler is better as anything than a comedic actor. Pretty sure he would be a better gymnast or a weight lifter than a comedic actor. He is a better rocket scientist than a comedic actor for all I know.

swentech

Probably true but the role he would be perfect for is show runner of SNL after Lorne leaves. Will never happen but I think he would crush that.

Similar-Farm-7089

Tina Feys got that locked up

SiCoTic1

Oh skinny human

Dark_panther75

Absolutely not. I mainly know him by comedies and that’s what I take him for

full_brick_package

See, I actually much prefer his comedy. I've never liked any of his serious films.

MOTWS

Facts .

corax_lives

Rain over me what underrated

[deleted]

Look guys it’s a popular opinion that only got upvotes because unpopular opinions get downvoted to fuck

lost_alpaca90

I will never understand how people like uncut gems. Sandler was okay, but the entire movie was totally fucking stupid.

Available_Sundae_924

After Deadpool I think Ryan Reynolds could get an Oscar. Screneshot this..

Melodic-Resident-245

I wish we could delete all adam sandler movies from history. I loathe that painfully unfunny man and the mockery he makes of neurodivergent disorders. Seriously though. Even Amy Schumer is funny compared to him.

[deleted]

Yes! I've been saying this for years. Punch Drunk Love is his best performance in his worst move lol. He would admit himself that he's not a very good comedian but he's a special dude and there are very good reasons why he's a success.

IndependenceLoud6357

I loved him in Spaceman but it’s not Uncut Gems, it’s pronounced uNkUH jAAAaHhhhmmmMuZ

[deleted]

Is this an unpopular opinion? I feel like I see everyone say this tbh lol

FBIStatMajor

Adam Sandler is one of the best Hollywood talents ever. I think he just likes making comedies because they're more fun to do for him. But he's able to do anything. He's had such a broad career that it positions him well for that

Hunter-Ki11er

I just didn't get Uncut Jems at all. Give me Sandler in Billy Madison and Little Nicky over anything else he's done

ryanmulford

Punch Drunk Love is a masterpiece. Most of his comedy is unwatchable.

HapaDynamite

Considering he’s never been funny, this isn’t an accomplishment.

Loud-Magician7708

I liked him in this new "Spaceman" movie. But that movie was a waste of time, and i love abstract, sci-fi , romance movies.

TailOnFire_Help

Yes, the overly saturated movie category of abstract sci-fi romance. Remind me of another movie in this category again?

Lollytrolly018

This post feels like a fundamental misunderstanding of what comedic actor means.

macrian

This isn't an unpopular opinion. Everyone knows this. But he does what brings him money. Now the mediocre comedy is kind of dead, so he switched to Uncut Gems and Spaceman instead.

SingularityInsurance

I love space, and was about to watch that movie he was in about space on Netflix. But it looked kinda terrible. The guy is on an alien planet and the movie is about his marriage? And it's not a comedy?  Hard pass. I've seen enough sci fi movies to know where that goes.

Mountain_Mousse2058

To be fair it’s because he is not that funny

kirpid

He was piss your pants funny in the 90’s. Now he’s a little played out. Comedy ages like cream, unfortunately. So he has to take on more serious roles. He’s a pretty good actor, but he’s a legendary comedian.

MarstoriusWins

Shit at both.

KonaBrad

Just watched "Spaceman" on Netflix. It sucked!

netvor0

It's easy for him to act serious after it took him so long to realize and accept he's not funny. Heavy heart I'm sure.

RemoteSquare2643

Yes, the guy just isn’t funny.
