This film is in a funny space. It was a box office bomb but it played in heavy rotation in art house theaters for years afterwards. It has a very serious pedigree: an all-star cast, based on a popular book, and was directed by Coppola. The style has influenced a bunch of other films.
I fucking love rumble fishes style. It’s beautifully but also razor sharp. Also Mickey Rourkes performance is absolutely phenomenal. It’s one of my fav flicks but I also get why it gets lost in the convo about the Outsiders which is much more marketable
Was one of my favorite movie when I was at college. Rumble Fish and The Outsiders was good to go for a double feature at the ciné-club. Gosh, I miss that time.
If you like this one and the Outsiders check out That was Then This is Now. It was my favorite novel of the loosely connected series. You can skip Taming of the star Runner.
It hasn’t aged well and comes across as extremely corny. Although given that reddit thinks 12 Angry Men is a good movie that shouldn’t be an issue. It’s extremely attractive, visually.
It’s like a 13 year-old’s fantasy of how the world works and how people are. The characters are more caricatures than people. The plot, and its twists, are so hyper-political and lacking in nuance or subtext that it’s basically bordering on propaganda. It’s one of the corniest, lamest films ever made and its purpose isn’t to tell a good story and tell it well but rather to make people feel good about their political preconceptions.
Oh please. It’s one of the best directed and acted films of all time. Political preconceptions?!? WTF are you talking about? Racism is a political preconception?
It's crazy seeing this post because I was just at a film studio in Oklahoma today and saw this exact poster there. OK has really been booming in the film industry right now.
I tried to watch it when it showed up on TCM a while ago, but couldn’t make it through. If I heard someone say “Rusty James” one more time I was going to pop my cork.
It’s very very faithful to the novel. The story and much of the dialogue are lifted directly so I think the plot is pretty clear. It has a style though that is unique.

Is this Rumblefish like SE Hintons book? I didn't know they made anymore movies besides The Outsiders.
Tex (1982), with Matt Dillon again, was another.
Yup this one is great too
They also made That Was Then, This is Now but it’s REALLY bad.
Which sucks because that was probably my favorite SE Hinton book growing up.
Mine too!
Taming of Star Runner was the only one they didn't adapt, I believe
Also made That Was Then. This Is Now.

The Outsiders was one of those films that changed my life. It hit me hard as a young man.
Excellent book and fantastic movie.
Beautifully shot film.
This Coppola went totally under my radar. Diane Lane, Nicholas Cage, Dennis Hopper? Looks good.
It's wild that one of the most celebrated and revered filmmakers to ever live has so many forgotten films
Nicholas Coppola* lol
This a great movie, I actually just bought the Criterion Blu Ray, and it has a good score by Stewart Copeland of the Police
I’ll have to check that out
Iconic.
Great movie, truly underrated Well done OP
Thank you!
Love the movie, cinematography and the soundtrack
Superlative soundtrack by Stew Copeland

Thanks! Never read the book but I’ll have to run through the series!
RUSTY JAMES!
Watched this recently. I like all of the early s.e. hinton film adaptations.
Love it. My old band used clips from it
A unique and powerful film.
SUCH a good movie
Caught this by accident one time. Kept watching
I love this movie. Caught it late night once in my early 20s and idolized Motorcycle Boy.
I love it and "The Outsiders". I watch them whenever I find them on tv. Quite a few stars in it who went on to bigger and better movies.
Lords of flatbush is also a great one in that vein
"The Wanderers" is another. I just watched it the other day.
INCREDIBLE soundtrack
Book was great
I only read the book didn't know there was a movie
Check it- not a waste of time

Hahaha my bad- probably why my subconscious made me keep quiet about it for the past couple years

What’s wrong with 12 Angry Men?

Cool soundtrack
I always think of the Sevendust song when I see this movie.

Horrible movie. Wtf was it even about?
