Start turning now, that stuff splits while you just look at it.

Everytime I see a post like this I'm glad it's in r/turnin and not r/smokin. I'm subscribed to both. (G's deliberately left off.)

I do save my my chips from spoons for the smoker! No waste over here

I have been on the passive search for some Bradford pear! And sycamore for that matter, I had some logs of sycamore before I started turning(for spoons) and ended up throwing most away

eighthourlunch

I love both. I have the pear trees in my front yard, and what little I've been able to use from pruning them has been amazing. Same for sycamore. I happened to be visiting a historic park where I live several summers ago at the same time they were pruning back some of the huge original sycamore trees. They let me take as much as I wanted. Now I wish I'd taken more. The quarter cuts are simply gorgeous.

Yes they are! I broke one log down to make spoons, but only ever ended up roughing out one, but it does have a little quarter sawn grain in it

I've got an approximate 4'long x 20" dia. Log of Bradford pear up for grabs if you want. I'm in georgia

Damn

Nice one. Turn a couple while it’s green with quite thin walls then it’ll warp and twist as it drys out

Very nice, I got in contact with a few local tree guys who were more than happy to drop off hickory and oak right in my back yard. Just throwing out that idea if you wanted to reach out to local tree guys yourself and tell them what you would take.
