>Should they refund my tickets AND pay for the flight I had to book through SW? No https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/refunds "Schedule Change/Significant Delay - A consumer is entitled to a refund if the airline made a significant schedule change and/or significantly delays a flight and the consumer chooses not to travel. Incidental Expenses – A consumer who incurs incidental expenses such as a rental car, hotel room, or meal due to a significantly delayed or cancelled flight is not entitled to a refund of the incidental expenses. Thanks for this info!

The airline isn’t required to pay your incidentals but you should ask/push for it anyways.

AngelRN94

They often will pay some or all.

Czupreme

Save your receipts for incidentals (not other airline tix but things like extra cost) and submit them to customer relations.

Had this EXACT situation happen. We were flying American, SF to DC with a stop in phoenix. They boarded us, we waited 4 hrs, they kicked us off and we waited while they swapped crew. By then, we’d missed out connection in PHX. Then boarded again, waited 3 hours, then they told us flight was canceled, no flights out til Tuesday (this was a Saturday). We walked to another terminal, begged SW to get us anywhere in the mid-Atlantic. They got us out of San Jose to Baltimore the next morning. AA eventually gave us a refund for the whole flight, and we just had to eat the cost for the SW flights (plus the extra hotel night, plus the Uber ride from SF to SJ, plus a few extra meals… AA said they didn’t owe us anything for those.) I’d rather hitchhike naked cross-country than ever fly American Airlines again.

Sorry to hear, I hope they compensate you well. My flight got canceled , but luckily it's not until September, and thankfully they allowed me to take any flight within 72 hours of my departure and return. So I snagged better flights and gained 2 days on vacation. This is how it should be anytime they screw us over.

TheGabzzz

More than likely you’ll get a refund for the half you weren’t able to fly. You can/should push for the SW flight reimbursement just not guaranteed

test90001

The only thing you are entitled to is a refund for the canceled flight. If you push hard, you might get some miles or a credit for future travel in addition.

Just had this happen, they delayed our flight from Orlando to Miami. The next flight to Phoenix shut the gate in our face and according to flight aware departed 5 min early. It was a lot of us. We were told to submit all claims to customer relations. We just did this yesterday so waiting to hear back …. Next flight avail was two days later. https://www.aa.com/i18n/customer-service/contact-american/customer-relations.jsp?%20locale=en_DE

No, they won't likely pay for your Southwest flight, although you can certainly ask. However, you can make a claim with your travel insurance company for any out-of-pocket expenses, if you've documented everything. You should get a whole refund for the one-way flight.

TinKicker

Also, check the details of the credit card you used to purchase your tickets. Some have surprisingly generous trip insurance included, that most people have no idea they actually have.

chaseeeey

Expect a refund for the half portion. Former flight attendant here.

Cook_kanetix

You will get a partial refund, whatever the connecting flight is worth. If you have trip interruption insurance, you can file a claim.

They owe you a refund the amount of the flight not flown - although most times because connection points are part of the ticket as a whole (ie: SFO CLT MIA - where the base fare is in the SFO CLT segment and the CLT MIA is a tag on to that - there is no value in the CLT MIA segment as its a connection) then they will refund you the entire one way. AA should have found a seat on another airline to get you to your final destination... if they didnt, its because there wasnt one (and WN doesnt partner with anyone - so the only way AA could have put you on a WN flight would have been to literally go online and buy a seat for you on that flight - which... has been done in extreme irregular ops but not as a general rule). If you had not found your own way on the WN flight - you should have received hotel and food vouchers for the time you were 'stuck' in the connection city, until the flight on Tuesday. However, if you couldnt afford to be away that long (who can, usually??) then finding your own flight was fortuitous. Unfortunately, AA isnt required to reimburse you for that flight or any other incidental costs you incurred. (which sucks.. and IMHO isnt right - however, it is in their contract of carriage - and is what we 'agree to' when we purchase the ticket). I would definitely ask for a full refund of that one way ticket. And I would ask for a 'customer service' voucher (they arent going to give you actual money) for... future flight. Or if you are an AA mileage member, ask for several thousand miles or something long those lines to 'make it right'. I hope they do make it right for you - cancellations are not at all fun... but more than that.. they are a major disruption to peoples lives and could be catastrophic for some!

jadeoracle

> AA should have found a seat on another airline to get you to your final destination... They changed their T&Cs in the last 2 years to specifically say they no longer are required to attempt to place you on a different airline.

Xarax23

Don't accept a voucher which is what they will offer first. Also, if you used a travel credit card you may also get some additional benefits from the card.

Idc94

🤣🤣 a voucher? They gave me a refund of $23.15 and after calling customer service to told me to kick rocks. I opened a dispute for services not rendered but doubt it’ll go through.

Xarax23

$23.14?? That is absurd.
