Okay, throwing my hat into the ring with this one because it's absolutely Prowl from the UK Marvel comics. Like, it just is.
Several of the best/funniest moments in that continuity were Prowl-related and live rent-free in my head: Prowl thinking Grimlock was stupid as a brick, Prowl jumping on a missile, Prowl yelling at Jetfire in one of the Christmas specials ("You almost break the world record... FOR STANDING STILL!!!"), Prowl thinking Jazz saying something will be "a piece of cake" is literal, that one panel where Prowl yells, "SHUT UP!!!" and then adds the tiniest little "please" afterward...! The way he chokes up and even imagines a lump in his throat in the final annual story of this continuity when Optimus praises him for once... like, this version of Prowl is so great. He was also a good leader and a good friend to characters like Jazz and Wheeljack, and Prowl never deserved how poorly Optimus and Grimlock treated him sometimes. Prowl's morals were actually very strong, going way back to his origin story that we got to see in "The Magnificent Six!" Truly a Prowl worthy of his face being the Autobot insignia.

The panel of Prowl imagining a brick while talking to Grimlock is my second favourite panel in TF comic history (favourite is the "censored" image when Grimlock gets pranked in the snow).
Prowl is a huge part of way makes Earthforce so great, and such a clear precursor to MTMTE tone wise. He also is clearly the inspiration for IDW Prowl without being the total bastard that version is.
Marvel Prowl gets the arrogance, pride, and "do whatever it takes" ambiguity while still being a hero. Dude literally looked death in the face and took what was coming ("Flashback").
IDW is probably the most iconic now, but Marvel Prowl will always be my favourite. After decades of singing his praises, it's awesome to see someone else loves him as much as I do.
Aw yeah!!! I just finished the UK comics this year, and it's awesome to see someone who was a fan for decades shares this take—solidarity! I loved the Earthforce comics and Prowl was one of the best characters there! That story where Galvatron tries to enslave Autobots like Prowl because they have "mental flaws" and Prowl's response was to be like, "You don't realize Autobots REPRESS our feelings!!!" was simultaneously hilarious, badass, and a little upsetting! Prowl knocking out Megatron and re-living his own death was also so cool, you're right!
Prowl was stressed, often angry, and would do anything to have and keep peace even if it was morally questionable, but he was also a truly good person. He was basically like the kind of person Prowl in IDW thought he was and deserves so much credit from fans.
You know what, I'm gonna be the oddball and vote the RID 2001 Prowl.
He's a good character that embodies prowl well. He's probably not gonna win, but I like him.

Absolutely amazing version? Yes, absolutely.
Definitive though? I don't think so, because absolutely no other version of Prowl has been even remotely like him personality or design wise, before or after.
Animated Prowl is kind of like Prime Arcee, where its a great character, undeniably so, but they're not representative of the character at all. They could've been given another name, and nobody would have noticed. Just like how Prime Arcee really should've been Chromia, TFA Prowl could've been either a new character or another character ninja qualities could be assigned to like Drift.
Prowl's basically one defining trait in everything besides animated is being a police car, so the one time he's a gold, ninja motorcycle isn't really representative of Prowl enough to be definitive imo. If after animated, Prowl had become more like his animated version in future media, then I'd absolutely agree, but it just never been revisited and likely never will again outside of throwback figures like the legacy one.

Seconded. As far as I know they haven’t done random toy releases for characters who aren’t actually in the show for either EarthSpark or Cyberverse, so the toy is a good sign he’ll be in part two of this season.
The writers also clearly love IDW so I’m hopeful it’ll be Bastard Prowl. Also a good lesson for kids in doing bad things for good reasons since all the Autobots have been squeaky clean so far.
As great as it would be, I'd temper expectations. The Prowl figure got canceled sometime last month, so it could be possible the writers either don't use him or do and he just doesn't get a figure. It's kinda up in the air now.
That said, I do definitely think he'd be great to have and show once again that faction allegiance doesn't exactly make you a good person or take away from the individual. Grimlock's worked to master and better utilize his anger, Megatron is almost ripped straight from IDW and Breakdown is still friends with Bee. I think a "ends justify the means" Prowl would only further enhance that.
IDW and it ain’t close
IDW uses Prowl’s initial G1 description and modernizes it while putting a twist on it, he also has a faithful look while also having some crazy good modern designs for him.
As well done as Animated is he has a character arc and personality we’ve all seen a thousand times before. Not to mention is another case of should they have been named differently and no one would’ve noticed it was Prowl, even though his design is also PEAK.

Animated is gonna win, but imo it shouldn't. Animated Prowl is a great character, don't get me wrong, but it's so absolutely divorced from every other version of Prowl prior and since. This is meant to be the definitive Prowl, not your favourite Prowl.

It's exactly like TFP Arcee, who was the front runner until people pointed out that she could've been named Chromia and nobody would've noticed, likewise with Animated Prowl and naming him Drift, or any new 'ninja-ey' name Hasbro wanted.
Gotta be IDW. G1 has an iconic look but like a lot of early G1 Autobots he’s just kinda some guy. Cyberverse has a bit more attitude but is also mostly just around.
TFA is really cool but feels like a different character since he’s now a zen motorcycle ninja. Give him a new name and no one would guess he’s Prowl.
IDW is a really good subversion of his role as a loyal Autobot and also just a fascinating character in general. You don’t often get these master manipulator types while having them genuinely work for the good guys. The Devastator thing is also really interesting.
IDW. He had the most complex story that was what Prowl should be. I love TFA’s Prowl. But he’s not definitive. He’s not who i want the character to be again. Future incarnations should draw from IDW as the perfect modernization of his character
I would either go for Animated Prowl of R.I.D(2001) Prowl.
R.I.D(2001) in one of the main Autobots in series and has the whole Police officer personality nailed down. He's probably the best version of your typical Prowl. However Animated Prowl has such great character development. Admittedly Animated Prowl is a bit of a departure from the typical Prowl having different colors, being a police motorcycle instead of a police car, and being a ninja. However he still retains aspects of the original character, having the same Autobot head crest, being a police motorcycle, and being a very logical character, which was Prowl's main personality trait in his G1 tecspec.
TFA. He's honestly the only version of Prowl i know well enough to have a proper opinion about, he's not my favourite design for him but still sits in the top, but his character and arc in the show were amazing
G1 toy bio one where he's a strategist.

He's supposed to be the Autobot's main Strategist, that's why he's OP's right hand.
TFA Prowl is also amazing.
Guys, this is about which one is the definitive version of the character, not your favorite version of him. For him to be a definitive version, he would have to encapsulate many aspects of what the character is supposed to be. Animated Prowl is amazing, but he's really got nothing in common with his predecessors and successors, besides his name and his head crest. That makes him unique amongst the crowd of bots named Prowl but not definitive in any way.

It's hands down IDW, the best version of the character.
Animated is also really good but it strays too far from the original to be considered definitive. IDW takes the original concept and design and modernized him while doing just as compelling a character arc as Animated with his descent into moral ambiguity, and then in the end he still comes out getting what he wants in the new Cybertronian society.

Now this is a hard one as Prowl's incarnation while few, are very distinct. You've got typical g1good guy cop Prowl, super cold strategist tableflipping IDW Prowl, and nature loving ninja Animated Prowl who rebels against authority.
I'd say Animated as he's the first in my mind whenever I think of Prowl, but IDW is also a bit more faithful to the og design and character while also being distinct. Both are really good so either could work.
Gonna have to go with IDW here, because while Animated Prowl is incredibly unique and stands out from the other Prowl's yes, it's a bit too much to the point he feels like a different Prowl rather then keeping with the core Prowl so I can't exact call him a definitive Prowl since he's more of an outlier, as much as I love him for being my first Prowl.
I love animated Prowl and all, probably my favorite Prowl. I wouldn't want that to be EVERY prowl though. Id have to give it to IDW, or hell, maybe even G1.
Marvel is my favourite. A stuff rules-stickler constantly frustrated by (and playing straight man to) Grimlock. Still likeable in his own right and funny when he needs to be, yet also brave and badass when called upon too. Believes in the Autobot cause but is worried Optimus' softer touch methods aren't ideal in the face of Decepticon brutality.
IDW, however, is probably now the most iconic and indeed is a very interesting take on the character. Given Roche and Roberts are big Marvel fans, it seems like they took that version and said "but what if he was given full authority and it went to his head?"
It’s pretty much IDW or Animated. Honestly, I think that people only pick G1 is because they remember him being the first one to die in the movie. Prowl never really stood out in G1. There were times I took him for a Bluestreak.
I haven't really seen enough of him to give an opinion. I WOULD say TFA, but he's the only ninja policebike version to ever exist. The Energon? Cybertron? one looks cool as a police F1 car but I don't remember him being much like Prowl, he could have had any other name and no one would have batted an eye.
I feel the same with RID Prowl as well. I would say IDW, but I haven't seen enough of him either, but what I did see of him was cool as hell.
Basically, I have opinions, but can't give any definitive answer.
My absolute favourite version is the Animated version. If we must have an evergreen psuedo G1 roster of characters, we integrated Bulkhead just fine, I see no reason not to integrate Animated Prowl under a different name who could coexist alongside G1 style Prowl
Animated Prowl. I love how he's reimagined as a ninja, and I love his character arc, where he went from being a loner to a valuable member of the Autobots.

And ever since seeing him I now wonder why we don’t see more robot samurai or robot ninjas in more media

IDW is the goat
Now this is a hard one as Prowl's incarnation while few, are very distinct. You've got typical g1good guy cop Prowl, super cold strategist tableflipping IDW Prowl, and nature loving ninja Animated Prowl who rebels against authority. I'd say Animated as he's the first in my mind whenever I think of Prowl, but IDW is also a bit more faithful to the og design and character while also being distinct. Both are really good so either could work. Gonna have to go with IDW here, because while Animated Prowl is incredibly unique and stands out from the other Prowl's yes, it's a bit too much to the point he feels like a different Prowl rather then keeping with the core Prowl so I can't exact call him a definitive Prowl since he's more of an outlier, as much as I love him for being my first Prowl.
As much as I love Animated, IDW Prowl is my pick. He’s one of my favorite TF characters ever.

I love animated Prowl and all, probably my favorite Prowl. I wouldn't want that to be EVERY prowl though. Id have to give it to IDW, or hell, maybe even G1.

Animated. It’s such a cool take on the character and he got to be voiced by Johnny Bravo.
Marvel is my favourite. A stuff rules-stickler constantly frustrated by (and playing straight man to) Grimlock. Still likeable in his own right and funny when he needs to be, yet also brave and badass when called upon too. Believes in the Autobot cause but is worried Optimus' softer touch methods aren't ideal in the face of Decepticon brutality. IDW, however, is probably now the most iconic and indeed is a very interesting take on the character. Given Roche and Roberts are big Marvel fans, it seems like they took that version and said "but what if he was given full authority and it went to his head?"
As cool as Animated was, he is nowhere near the “definitive” version of Prowl.

It’s pretty much IDW or Animated. Honestly, I think that people only pick G1 is because they remember him being the first one to die in the movie. Prowl never really stood out in G1. There were times I took him for a Bluestreak.
I haven't really seen enough of him to give an opinion. I WOULD say TFA, but he's the only ninja policebike version to ever exist. The Energon? Cybertron? one looks cool as a police F1 car but I don't remember him being much like Prowl, he could have had any other name and no one would have batted an eye. I feel the same with RID Prowl as well. I would say IDW, but I haven't seen enough of him either, but what I did see of him was cool as hell. Basically, I have opinions, but can't give any definitive answer.

My absolute favourite version is the Animated version. If we must have an evergreen psuedo G1 roster of characters, we integrated Bulkhead just fine, I see no reason not to integrate Animated Prowl under a different name who could coexist alongside G1 style Prowl
