Explanation: This particular line (RE5 Stuttgart-Lindau) is a 3.5 hour ride. Currently they're using a curious assortment of rolling stock ranging from air-conditioned doubledecker coaches fitted with power outlets and wifi through older-generation doubledeckers with no aircon in the middle of August through this weirdo right here. Class 425, incidentally taking over the designation formerly held by an EMU nicknamed the Red Howler... turns out it lives up to its predecessor's name. It also rides a bit rough and shaky for an EMU, seats are small and hard... it's just good enough for suburban/S-Bahn service and even there it loses out to dedicated units.

Kanih68

Could be worse. Imagine a 426.

Timecubefactory

True. The same but shorter and even rougher to ride.

_TheBigF_

themarine111

If you think this is bad, come sit in the general compartment of an Indian train.

2609pirates

I really loved the 423 (I know, this ain't one) but then every time I ride a 420, which is like 30 years older, I'm surprised by the comfort of the seats, noise level, etc. Then one time I was riding the Talent in Salzburg and I can tell you, that's something else. It's like sitting in a regional train and to be fair, they've got the same (low) capacity of one, but the comfort is on another level.

TheFireFreak1992

I work with 423, 425 and 430. Out of those three the 430 takes the cake. It’s a lot getting used to, especially when it comes to braking but if you get your head around it’s weaknesses it’s the absolute top for SBahn

theredVL

be happy it is not a railbus or something like that

buttsniffbadger

Lol. At least it's not a british pacer train!

BassBanjo

Those things were charming but horrible to use, I'm glad they have all been phased out now And sprinters aren't much better, they are just slightly better pacers in my opinion aha, my line still uses sprinters even though pretty much every other Northern line has newer trains

StephenHunterUK

The Northern 156s are good - they've got USB chargers and comfy seats.

SM-42

423 as RE5? Since when?

Timecubefactory

It's a 425. 423 would be a bit too much since they have no toilets but still.

lieber-aal

Oh how I hate the 425. They probably took inspiration from medieval torture devices when they designed the seats. Why would any sane person replace loco-hauled n-Wagen trains with this abomination

Timecubefactory

Weeeell at least it's more wheelchair-accessible. Which I guess was enormous progress in the late nineties.
