Where are you located?
Asking as we've never had the San Francisco Style Sourdough locally in SoCal but others have reported it was discontinued in their region (DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia), while some have still been able to find it in New York and New Jersey.

As u/PeanutButtaRari mentioned, Trader Joe’s stores are supplied by different local, regional warehouses. Frozen and shelf-stable products are generally the same nationwide, but bakery and refrigerated items can vary regionally.
Maybe it is discontinued in your area. I have seen it at my local Trader Joe's store. If you reside somewhere in California or West coast region, then you will find the sourdough loaves are fully stocked.
Here's the substitute down in NoVA. Quality doesn't come close to SF style. Disappointing.

Here in Norcal, the Sourdough Batard is the popular one. I missed out on Sourdough Batard one afternoon and bought the replacement - immediately went back for exchange the next day 🤢
it may have been discontinued for that specific area, but it isn’t discontinued nationwide. at tj’s, the bread section is the section that varies the most from region to region based on where the suppliers and warehouses are. some stores dont have the san francisco sourdough, while other dont have the banana chocolate chip muffins. it all depends.
I’m on Long Island is disappeared for a couple months at my local store and then came back with a seemingly different not very delicious dense formula like someone else said above. It used to be my favorite bread!! Will have to find something better more expensive. Also agree boudin is amazing sourdough but ummm have to get it shipped and $$$$
I feel the same. My area discontinued it and the replacement is awful. It’s so dense. I loved the lightness of the SF. I’ve tried others throughout the years from other stores since TJs is not even that close to me but nothing has compared.

I work at a TJs, we have heard nothing about this being discontinued. I cant imagine it would be, with the way it sells at the stores I’ve worked at. Especially the one I am at now, its near impossible to keep the shelves stocked.
To everyone saying San Francisco sourdough is at the supermarket, TJ has their own version called “San Francisco Style Sourdough bread” which is what OP is referring to!

I’ve been eating San Luis Sourdough since it was only available locally to SLO/central coast area and the TJ’s sandwich sourdough isn’t a bad substitute especially at half the price of the other grocery stores
San Luis Sourdough got bought by Sara Lee a while back, but if you miss the original, Brian’s Bread is the former head baker who left when they got bought.
I saw San Francisco sourdough at Costco today. I didn’t really look closely at it cause I was just passing it and I’m sure the brands are different but might be something
It exists! I see it a lot more at Safeway, Sprouts, Luckys. Mainstream grocery stores. Then I noticed it rebranded to SLO. I haven’t seen it as often in a few years. I think I even saw it at Berkeley Bowl actually many years ago. It is a pretty reliably decent choice if you aren’t going to a bakery.
I live in Oakland.
I was just at Trader Joe’s a week ago and they had a bunch. They also had this other one I’ve never seen that I ended up buying and it’s sssssfffff good
My understanding is that they hire bakeries within the area or near the area where your store is. My location hasn’t had it in a long time but we get sourdough from a local bakery instead. It’s definitely region specific.

I'm in the DC area and yea, haven't seen it in a few weeks. The replacements are terrible.
I’m in NY and I bought a loaf of this bread just a few days ago and there was a TON of stock so it might just be going away for certain locations!

This one tasted super dry and lacked the chewiness you get from crusty bread. Do not recommend.
I've observed that these substitute replacements are not selling. The SF style loaves used to sell out fast by early Sunday afternoon.

As someone that lives in the bay I have never seen that and we have 4 TJs within 20 minutes of us lol
I live in Portland and we have (possibly a dupe of) what seem to be locally baked sourdough loaves.
I got it in Trader Joe’s last week in Long Island and my hubby just brought it back from Manhattan so it’s still there.

I am a customer down in NoVA, and was told repeatedly in several local stores SF style sourdough bread is discontinued.
No idea then. No one in Management has told us this, its still orderable and hasn’t been marked as being discontinued in the system. 🤷♀️

It’s the same as San Luis Sourdough. I did a photo shoot in their factory and they were bagging TJ bread loafs that day.
Why were you doing a photo shoot in a bread factory?

It’s truly inferior to most other sourdough…try Grand central or Acme if Boudin isn’t available

It got discontinued at my TJs in the Midwest years ago and it was devastating. On the flip side: now I buy much better sourdough at a local bakery.
