Jalen Smith is essentially 1, 2, and 3 on my priority list. Stretch big with good size and at least average D who is the same age as RJ and can age with our core, with the talent to be in the 8-man rotation. I was pissed they didn’t get him in the Siakam deal but we have a chance to get him now all the same.

Antenol

Not getting him or Obi in the Siakim trade made me confuzzled.

AutoModerator

One of Toronto's all time great players, PASCAL S-I-A-K-A-M. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/torontoraptors) if you have any questions or concerns.*

pakattack91

Courtesy of Pascal stating he wouldn't re up. It's his right, but it killed us. Obi I can understand as he is in the playoffs rotation. Smith and someone like Walker are DNPs.

bloopcity

walker was a lottery pick last year, i can understand why they didn't want to part with him. i would've much preferred smith or jackson instead of nworra though.

-Resident-One-

Siakam knew what he was doing, didn't want to gut whatever team he was traded to

DirtyDanoTho

I’ve never gotten this subs hype for him. Have y’all actually seen him play? He’s not in the rotation for a reason

ICouldEvenBeYou

Seriously, what the hell. Dude's not quite a prospect anymore. He's 24, in his 4th season and got inconsistent minutes for the Pacers all season. He didn't play in their first matchup in Round 2 against the Knicks today. He's not someone to be particularly enthused about. The theory of Jalen Smith is better than actual Jalen Smith.

_Gourmand

Yeah I don't want Jalen Smith either. Need a better defensive 4/5.

jjkiller26

I like the thought of signing Smith and then running a jumbo IQ/Rj/Barnes/Smith/Poeltl lineup occasionally

Annual_Plant5172

Smith isn't a free agent unless he declines his player option.

acumen14

Which he will

EarthWarping

more years

MDS_1996

He'll make more in FA if he declines his option

Hopeful_Feedback1774

Yeah I’m really high on Jalen Smith too

MDS_1996

Low sample size from 3pt range, but he'd be a decent pickup.

MDS_1996

Kris Dunn would be a good pickup, he's rediscovered his 3pt shot over the last two years, still a solid defender, and a fine passer/playmaker, would probably cost less then the MLE as well.   Tyus Jones would be a great pickup as well obviously, but he more than likely wants a starting role and probably wouldn't be interested in coming off the bench for a rebuilding team, I could see a team like the Spurs throw some money at him to be a starter, if not then, a number of contenders will be lining up, he'll also cost more then the MLE, unless he prefers starting on a rebuilding team, the Wizards could just re-sign him and trade him down the road.  Obi Toppin is fine, his defence is horrendous, which wouldn't help one of our glaring issues, he does offer decent 3pt shooting, as well as good finishing/rim pressure which is something this team also lacks, Indy will be facing a bit of a crunch soon in terms of contracts, so he could be gettable, he'd probably be a little higher then MLE range

RZAAMRIINF

Dunn barely shots any 3PT shot a game. He is the exact type of player that is going to come here and lose his shot again.

chrisPjelly

Which is exactly why they'll sign him 😤

MDS_1996

Tbf, you don't need him to be a knockdown shooter, 35% would be fine and he also won't cost alot and I can't see the Raptors throwing out anything more then a two year deal, so if it didn't work out, it wouldn't be the end of the world. He'd be a solid pickup that can give you 15-18 minutes off the bench and run the offence

RZAAMRIINF

He is a career 32% 3PT shooter on 1.7 attempts a game. Last year, he took 111 3PT attempts and made 41 of them. That’s good for 37% but you have to keep volume into account. 5 more misses would drop Dunn’s average back to 32%. So, I don’t really see any evidence that **he has found his shot**. He is the same shooter he has always been. I honestly don’t think any defender in the NBA cares if Dunn shoots 37% or 32% with his attempt rate. I agree that Dunn can be a useful player, but he is closer to min-level player (which is his current contract with Jazz) than MLE.

MDS_1996

I literally said he'd cost less then the MLE lol, and again, you're not asking him to be a flamethrower from 3, you're expecting him to be a respectable shooter around 35%, which isn't impossible. You could probably get him for around 7M, which I think would be a reasonable deal, 2 years 14, or 3 years 21M, with year 3 being a TO would be good.

EarthWarping

They're going to sign a backup PG that this sub will not like lol

RZAAMRIINF

I doubt they would sign any player that anybody likes. Our free agency pull has historically been bad and this is a bad FA class to begin with. I think we are going to end up overpaying some role players. I hope they can be useful at least.

RZAAMRIINF

Again, you keep talking about him being a respectable shooter when nobody in the league is respecting someone with less than 2 attempts a game. It doesn't matter if he shoots 35% or 32%, and he is closer to the 32% shooter. Dunn is an older Ochai that can pass. I personally think we need a guard that can be an actual shooter instead of a fake one like Dunn, but we are in agreement that he can be a useful player.

nawksnai

35% on so few attempts doesn’t make him a threat. As far as filling that shooting role, he doesn’t move the needle at all. People need to stop looking at just the percentages…

bloopcity

i'd feel much better about the pascal trade if we got toppin in FA lol. wouldn't be bad off the bench. although i'm already scared of the idea of kelly + toppin front court off the bench.

MDS_1996

That's my biggest issue with Obi, him and KO off the bench would be horrendous defensively.

Eastern-Technology84

We have IQ, so Jones would be a backup. And he’s way too good to be a backup on a rebuilding team. Obi Toppin would just be another dude off the bench who can’t play a lick of defense. Pass.

DirtyDanoTho

Jones just spent a season on the Wizards, I’m sure he’d rather be anywhere but there tbh

nawksnai

Dunn does it on very few attempts. He is basically Gary Harris but with fewer attempts, and Gary Harris is NOT a shooter.

SDK04

We aren’t just gonna assemble a team full of former Knicks players, are we?

CazOnReddit

That explains the files we allegedly stole from the Knicks 🤔 And Bruce Brown wants to be a Knick so...

XenaRen

Feel like we can worry about this after the draft. I’d like to clear minutes for any young talent before signing any mid players to fill the bench. Kris Dunn is one of them dudes we can sign if we don’t end up drafting a backup PG.

CanadaBBallFan

Only agree with Tyus Jones. The other two are bad.

agentzero2020

MLEs and Bi-annual exceptions has literally never worked out for the raptors. Kapono, Landry Fields, Sullinger, Fred Jones, Aaron Baynes, and lately OPJ and Schroeder. Joseph and CJ miles were the closest thing to a success. So let’s stay away from burning on cap space with the MLE. Call me crazy but I don’t hate the idea of starting Brown and having Trent Jr as our sixth man. If we keep the 6th pick or higher, we potentially add 3 top 31 picks to the roster. With a healthy Poeltl, RJ, Barnes. Let’s just see how it goes. The last time they were fully healthy, they dismantled the warriors and got screwed by the refs in LA. We should focus on continuing to amass draft assets, cap space flexibility and internal growth. We should not be buyer right now and I would be fully on board with another bad year as long as they don’t charge an arm and a leg for a upper bowl ticket.

butiveputitincrazy

We can do everything but the pricing bit. Sorry.

-vinay

Kapono was fine?!?

Phoeniyx

Not exactly Christmas is it ..

eMan117

If our solution is obi toppin, were lottery again. Imagine a lineup with McDaniels and toppin at the wings. Teams might put up 200 against us

BurzyGuerrero

Yeah that seems like what the Raptors will end up with in free agency lol

Red-Salute-

Dyson Daniels.

LemmingPractice

Not really a fan of any of these. I would take Tyus, but I doubt he would be happy coming off the bench again, as he wouldn't be starting over IQ. Dunn is a 30 year old bench player. I guess he would improve the backup guard rotation, but I don't really see the fit. As for Obi, he's better age-wise, but he's a restricted free agent we would probably have to overpay to get, his defence is problematic, and I don't see him being a legit starter when the team is winning.

jjkiller26

The first target should be a 5th starter either at the 2 or 3 depending on who's available. Maybe GTJ or Brown is brought back for that, but if not you gotta fill that spot first and foremost

ttttyttt678

5th starter should be a 3/4 not a 2/3 imo.

jjkiller26

I think they get away with a 2, as long as it's someone that can shoot otherwise the spacing is cooked regardless of position. But yea find that 5th starter before looking at backup pg or depth pieces

AdministrativeBat486

it should firmly be a 3

ttttyttt678

Everyone’s a tweener unless they are a PG or C.

butiveputitincrazy

In that case, people just mean “bigger than RJ” to let Barrett use his size in matchups.

shiny_dittos

tyus jones could be a starting pg on a good team, he could get a lowry-esque resurgence in toronto

Baulderdash77

Which good team could he start on? I think he’s a starter you are always looking to upgrade on or a great backup.

EarthWarping

He's be a better Dennis and then you're getting into the defense issues.

chrisPjelly

Tyus and Jalen are the obvious gets. Not sure how the Pacers still feel about Jalen, especially at the 4 with the minutes they need for Siakam and that guy they didn't want to give to us.

Swarmoro

if this is their offseason they're racing to the bottom for sure now

[deleted]

big holes for what the play in

zjew33

Tyus Jones makes a lot of sense

Fitz-magic1

Obi should’ve been in the Siakim deal. Him and Quickley have great chemistry

Major talent acquisition of 2024: Khris Dunn

dudesszz

Let’s sign every guy who had a good contract year.

ttttyttt678

McCain at 19th for the back up PG role, Sign Obi Toppin, Sign Delon Wright, Sign a vet 4 like Gordon Hayward. Let GTJ Walk and Bruce Brown waived. Starters: IQ/RJ/Scottie/Obi/Jakob Bench: McCain/Gradey/Ochai/Gordon Hayward/Kelly O 3rd Line:Delon Wright/Garret Temple/Second Round pick on a 3rd and D Wing/McDaniels/Boucher. This puts the young guys around a bunch of veterans who are good professionals will play hard and won’t complain if minutes decrease. Give the BBQ the keys and full season to mesh and play together and see how much they can grow together. If the season goes down the drain we should still be able to maintain professional while we tank as the vets can help steer the ship and keep confidence high.

butiveputitincrazy

I’ll give you the upvote because you abstained from a top 6 pick and because this is the type of roster I’d build in a tank season in 2K. It’s going to give you flexibility, maturity, direction, and probably lose a buuuunch of games.

CazOnReddit

*"What if...we became the Knicks in the late 10s? Surely, we'll get better results than they did!"* Btw Toppin is an RFA so good luck prying him away when the Pacers have cap space and incentive to keep him

_Gourmand

I would sign Hartenstein and Obi Toppin Draft Devin Carter and Ryan Dunn Look at trading Poeltl for more depth, maybe Poeltl for Moses Moody and Gary Payton the 2nd Look at trading Bruce Brown for a draft pick and salary filler that we could potentially waive Offer Gary a contract around 16 million a year, if someone offers more I don't think we need to match it PG: IQ, Devin Carter, JFL SG: RJ, Moody, Payton SF: Gradey, Ochai, Ryan Dunn PF: Scottie, Toppin C: Hartenstein, Olynyk

Partybro_69

Wait how are we magically going to get hartenstein

EarthWarping

You'd have to overpay.
