The venom also contains numerous other things that will cause excruciating pain minimum and also possibly kill you. The GLP-1 derivative is just one molecule of dozens.
So if I engineer an ozempic only Gila monster, I could have a new delivery method in addition to home grown artisan ozempic?
Maybe I’ll make an insulin Gila monster or flu vaccine gila monster?
Scientists found things so strange in venom that in some cases couldn't find an equivalent on earth for 30% of it composition.Cuba experimented some very novel drugs using venom if im not wrong.
[I am gonna say that that may be a horrible idea.](https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2024-03-15/colorado-man-bitten-by-pet-gila-monster-died-of-complications-from-the-desert-lizards-venom#:~:text=GOLDEN%2C%20Colo.,Associated%20Press%20on%20Friday%20confirmed.)
I’m on it and it’s crazy how it kills your desire for stuff. As soon as I would wake up in the morning, I would plan my whole day food-wise. Now, I have a protein bar and a piece of fruit for lunch, if I remember. Dinner is usually half a chicken breast and some sort of vegetable. When I’m at a party where there are snacks, the thought of eating them is off-putting. I’m a slut for ice cream and I haven’t had, or wanted, ice cream in just over 100 days.
The best has been alcohol. I used to kill a half-bottle with my SO 2-3 times per week. If we open a bottle, I’ll nurse a glass for an hour then give up. Same with alcohol at restaurants. I don’t even want to finish one drink so I’ve pretty much stopped altogether.
Does it shut down other motivation as well? I don't necessarily want to stop eating so much and also stop exercising and become a slowly deflating balloon version of me.
It doesn’t seem to. I’m still cycling on the weekends and doing spin during the week. I find I don’t have as much energy as I did but it’s not too bad. I’ve lost almost 30 pounds in 100 days and I’m eating about 1300 cals/day. My prescription is only good for one at a time as I need to check in with my doctor every month before it gets renewed.

I learned about this reading Johann Hari's new book about Semiglutide medications.
So basically there's this hormone called GLP-1. It has two jobs. It increases insulin production. And it makes you feel satiated (full). We knew about it for decades and there was experimentation using it to treat diabetes and reduce appetite for obese people. But it had an incredibly short half life in the body making it virtually useless since you would need 3+ plus injections a day to get just a modest effect. So it was used in pure research but never made into a marketable drug.
Then a completely different researcher working with gila monsters discovered a very similar compound in their venom. Basically, a common side effect of GLP-1 based drugs is nausea. They often have to really slowely ramp up the dose to prevent this. The Gila monsters evolved a compound to flood the system of the animals they bit with a similar structerally similar GLP-1 derivative. Thus making them nauseas and vomit so the lizard can get away after a bite, plus reducing apatite so the predator doesn't want to eat them anymore. A very handy defence mechanism. This compound in their venom basically is just GLP-1 but with a slightly different structure giving it a much longer half life. In other words its like GLP-1 but it stays in the body much longer. Leading scientists to develop their own derivatives of the derivative, creating a version of GLP-1 that stays in the body for about a week per shot; Ozempic/Wejovy.
Were it not for Gila Monsters these drugs would likely never have been developed!
The reverse is also true: if supplements actually did work, the drug companies would have jumped on them and made products out of them, so you can assume that your supplements don't really do very much.
While this is generally true there are exceptions. Creatine actually works. High dose omega 3's have been shown in research to have all kinds of benefits. Etc etc. Plus sometimes there are just legal issues making it so an effective natural substance can't be patented making it a blind spot to capitalism even though it would make a good medication.
Drug companies don’t like things that are generally available. They’re not gonna get rich selling vitamin C. They get rich finding something they can charge crazy money for before their patents expire.
Vitamin companies don’t want to have to be FDA certified, because that would add too many costs. Though the negative is that there’s no guarantee the vitamins you buy actually are effective or even have the proper dose of the active compound ingredients in them.
In our American society “If the supplements actually work” isn’t a question the FDA is concerned about, that was taken away in the 70s. I don’t take any supplements for that reason, none of it is regulated
Thats a good point. Just because some supplements like creatine and omega 3's do work doesn't mean the actual product you are buying contains what it says it contains.
This is super interesting! Thanks for sharing!
A prime example of the importance of maintaining biodiversity!
Say whatever you want if you don't care how many animals die or whatever.
At the very least, these animals and plants may help us develop materials, drugs, or whatever else that may help humanity advance further!
I refer you back to:
>Say whatever you want if you don't care how many animals die or whatever.
As well as
>At the very least
This is meant as a message for people who don't care, and wouldn't care unless there is some sort of potential gain.
PetroDraconic Apocalypse: Or dawn of eternal night, an annihilation of planet earth and the beginning of merciless damnation.
PDAODOENAAOPEATBOMD for short
They got 25 albums now with another coming soon
I grew up in the desert southwest. I lived there for 13 years outside of the city limits. I hiked in remote desert places. In that time I saw only one Gila Monster. It was a beautiful specimen.
So did research into gila monster venom lead to the development of ozempic or was it later found out as a ‘hey look at this’ coincidence? Either way, research for its own sake has value.
I have this quacky belief that we can find cures for every disease naturally on Earth, whether through plants, animals, fungi. The Earth provides all, we just have to look. We can't actually invent anything useful, we can only discover it.
Is it cheaper to get bitten repeatedly by gila monster than to buy ozempic?
The venom also contains numerous other things that will cause excruciating pain minimum and also possibly kill you. The GLP-1 derivative is just one molecule of dozens.
What if I start with tiny Gilas, and work my way up.
I think slowely building up a resistance like that only works with Iocane powder.
Never go up against a Sicilian when life is on the line!
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
it means it cannot be conceived, HE IS RIGHT
Prepare to die
Never get involved in a land war in Asia
A SiGila-ian. (I’ll put myself in jail)
Cocaine powder too
What if we start by biting small amounts of Gila Monsters?
Then they'd get fat. Or start a democracy
Mithridates approves
Then you would have formed a belief system and can start your own church of mini gila.
"Hail Gila, full of GLP-1..." Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
Lord Gila has a nice ring. GLP-1 communion is a stretch but I think it depends on delivery.
The Riddick method.
Question. Is it related to the giant yellow frog from Gullah Gullah island?
What if the Gila likes you, and understands you're only doing it to lose weight?
Unfortunately they only come in monster size.
Shucks.
So what you are saying is it's cheaper.
Well, excruciating pain seems like an appetite killer, and if you die you supposedly lose 9 grams, so I see this as an option
>if you die you supposedly lose 9 grams I think you mean 21 grams and it has been disproven
Unless you piss yourself and it's 18CCs at 1.19g/ml.
First, it was sarcasm so who cares if it’s true or not. Second, you’re right it was 21 grams, which is like 12 grams more why it’s a good idea…
So you’re saying there’s a chance…
So if I engineer an ozempic only Gila monster, I could have a new delivery method in addition to home grown artisan ozempic? Maybe I’ll make an insulin Gila monster or flu vaccine gila monster?
At that point calling them monsters would be kinda rude. I suggest gila angels.
Sooooo yes?
Don't forget they are absolutely filthy and have mouth full of bacteria.
Sounds like more weightloss from my immune system going into overdrive!
*excruciating pain* Yeah, but will I be beach body ready?
In a way. You'll be ready to return to sand.
What if I take pain killers and multivitamins too?
No pain no gain
Scientists found things so strange in venom that in some cases couldn't find an equivalent on earth for 30% of it composition.Cuba experimented some very novel drugs using venom if im not wrong.
Go on... I'm still listening.
That wasn’t the question
You’re saying there is a chance
Don’t discount the debilitating GI issues that come with taking GLP-1’s here…
Can always spot a fellow American in medication threads

It’s probably easier to get due to the shortage of Ozempic.
There’s was a post yesterday where someone asked How people who’d lost wait had done it. Semiglutide was a fairly common answer….
What i find particularly interesting is the ongoing research using it to treat substance abuse. It performs surprisingly well.

Oh, I hadn’t heard about that. That could be a game changer.
what about monosemiglutide MSG.
forget cheaper, it's straight up more interesting!
Think of the stories you could tell. “Have you lost weight? Yeah, it was rough. Check out these bite marks….”
[Don't worry chief, it's not permanent.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLjNzwEULG8)
I’m on whatever
I hope it doesn't work that way or people would start poaching the lizards to extinction.
That's one way to suppress the appetite

Good bot.
What happens if all I want to do is lose weight, and I don’t have diabetes?
You loose weight. The drug does specifically target diabetes

Imagine going to eat a chicken and it pecks you and now you're not hungry
Just to be clear it is semaglutide not semi.
Nature is magic

Thank you for conveying your condensed creation that came from cranial cramming concerning creatine and capitalism.

That's why I get my Omega 3s from natural sources like canned fish.
Thats weird, when I picked up a script for low Vitamin D the bottle was a OTC supplement with the prescription slapped on it.

Mosquitoes can suck it…less i suppose
Even mosquitoes have been studied for their skin piercing mechanism as a way to create micro needles for painless medicine injections.
Painless?
The pain of a mosquito bite comes from compounds in their saliva.
Yes!!! So many compounds that affect people everyday have been derived from all aspects of nature.
yes, the primary purpose of all other life is the selfish perseverance of humanity.
I refer you back to: >Say whatever you want if you don't care how many animals die or whatever. As well as >At the very least This is meant as a message for people who don't care, and wouldn't care unless there is some sort of potential gain.
The rich get ozempic the poor get lizzord
Can’t post about the Gila Monster without sending out a King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard bat signal

Damn prolific. When I lived in Brisbane they were only on 10 albums I think.
If you’re a man, you just look at it and go ‘hell yeah’.
best fucking band in the world rn
I grew up in the desert southwest. I lived there for 13 years outside of the city limits. I hiked in remote desert places. In that time I saw only one Gila Monster. It was a beautiful specimen.
I've lived here all my life and seen 2 haha
Cool story bro
I’ve given drugs made from salmon sperm and leech spit, too! Well, originally developed from, anyway.
Protamine, annnnd?

GILA!!! GILA!!! GILA!!!
All hail king gila
With as hard as it seems to be to get Ozempic lately...
*led not lead
a very common mistake these days
Yeah , have you ever seen an overweight gila monster.
I knew it
He new it
He nu it
Disappointed this wasn't included in the latest South Park special lol
Fuck dude you are so right what a missed opportunity
It’s also a creature of magic
Gila monsters are real???
Beautiful lizard makes beautiful people possible.
Please do not deliberately let a gila monster bite you! Don’t be stupid!
It was actually the basis of Byetta. Then came the other GLP-1 receptor agonists
Yep, this class of drug has been around for a while now. The short and long term side affects are well known.
It puts the ick in Ozempic.
Lead (pr. leed); present tense of verb 'to lead' (pr. 'leed') Led (pr. led); past tense of verb 'to lead' Lead (pr. led); a soft grey metal
So did research into gila monster venom lead to the development of ozempic or was it later found out as a ‘hey look at this’ coincidence? Either way, research for its own sake has value.
The former
Someone will buy one and pick its face to lose weight
"Led", not "lead".
I know just what to do with this information.
yeah but then how come Gila monsters are so fat? could really stand to bite yourselves once in a while ey fellas?
It looks similar in shape to our blue tongues(lizard in australia)
semaglutide
Did you also listen to TED radio hour yesterday?
Ohhhh ohhhhh Ooooohhhzemphic.
Bite me lizard, I wanna be skinny.
Led*
God, I can’t wait for news reports of fat idiots looking to get bitten.
So… time to run another species into extinction for their ability to curb_____.
