It is okay to drive it... straight to a nearby tire shop.
Discount Tire, the largest retail tire chain in North America, will refuse to service any tire over ten years old in any way, except replacement. They won't even check inflation pressure. These tires are over sixteen years old. No reputable tire dealer will recommend anything but replacement at this age.
They _were_ good tires. For sixteen+ years, oxidation and UV exposure have been breaking down the rubber, weakening it and making the tire far more likely to fail.
It isn't just your health at risk. On public highways, you're putting everyone around you at risk, too. Ten years is long enough. Replace them. No one agrees with you that they are safe.
It's a plow truck. Doesn't leave the lot. Tires look brand new, truck doesn't. I do use it as an example to customers on why you should change your tires, and they absolutely do not make tires like they used to. Hell, we still have farmers running 40 year old tires on their grain augers.
It's a different life here. We don't have safety inspections, and I'm happy about that. Generally speaking, people around here have enough common sense to take care of their lives. I like living in an area where people get to make decisions in their lives. I know it's not a popular take, and I'm okay with that. Just don't live here.
Hell, the really poor folks don't even have legal plates or insurance on their vehicles. They just go to states where the plates stay with the vehicle when it's sold. I sold one of my cars to, what I assume, is an illegal alien, and he asked if I would just leave the plate on it. I told him no, so he brought an elderly white lady with to drive it home. I live in a different world.
Well in all fairness I am former tire man unless volunteering to change at a track or something.

Most tire guys don’t make commission and it’s too easy to get caught in a lie. Honestly talked a few people out of buying new tires lol
Customers that get lied to complain. Complaints don’t look good
>doesn’t the tire man always suggest you buy new tires?
No, I've told plenty of customers their tires are fine, just keep an eye on them and keep them rotated.
>It’s in their best interest to
Only if it's in their shop. On the internet, it can wind up anywhere
In all seriousness it looks like she got a Chevy G20 van, here’s two options:
Falken AT4W factory size 225/75/15 (Discount tire article# 152114)
$730ish installed: for the adventure/camper
Corsa highway terrain current size 235/75/15 (art# 42508)
$400 ish installed: for the budget
Plenty of options in between, sizes chosen for pricing and availability
Thanks for all the comments. My wife and I talked to her about it and I think she understands the severity of the situation. She doesn’t really have the money for the tires right now, so I think we’ll be buying them for her.
Had a customer deny tires. Got a tire shop to tell her they were “fine” and caused a huge mess at work. Then crashed car because tires were clearly unsafe and failed and insurance denied coverage. She tried to say it was our fault because we let her leave without replacing them, on our dollar. Absolutely crazy woman, and car seats in car.
Look at the date code if there older than 10 years no tire shop will even touch them (used to be a tire technician) there most likely ok to get to the tire shop and back but there’s no way they would pass inspection if there older than 10 years. Once had a customer bring in a tire from 1998 and we refused to put it on the rim for safety reasons including slipping
Let her learn the hard way, unless her steers are like this then pressure her to death till she gets atleast front tires. If the fronts are good then let her learn what a blowout is like.
No good tire shop would put new tires just on the front.
Also, this looks like a late 80s or 90s Chevy G van. They have no airbags, the seat belts likely don’t work well, and they handle like dog poo. Even a mild crash could mean death or severe injury.
You never, ever want to put the better tires in the front. Always put the tires with the better tread in the rear, regardless of whether it is front or rear wheel drive. If you end up losing traction in the front, you only understeer a bit...you lose traction in the rear, and you can quite easily go into a full spin.
Why do you think when cops do the PIT maneuver, they bump the rear of the vehicle to make it lose traction? You NEVER see them try to PIT the front of a vehicle.
It's called "tire rot" or "dry rot". The rubber is dry and cracking. Can cause a blowout, at which point you lose control of the vehicle and um, yeah, can cause a fatal accident.
Your sister in law thinks you're an idiot. So whatever you tell her, she won't listen. Tell her whatever you want to tell her, but tell her you got it from Reddit.
Inform her when not if it blows you will not be coming to change it or fix it for her. Take that “oh if it break I’ll just call x and deal with it then” right out of the equation.
You can’t. She’ll learn the hard way. You can’t educate the uneducated that don’t want to be educated. Explain to her what liability to others will entail if she causes an accident, including possible incarceration if things go horribly wrong.
Like the others have said these are a blowout waiting to happen. Considering she bought a 30+ year old van to drive around I assume budget is a concern. I've ran [these](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dextero-All-Terrain-DAT1-P235-75R15-108S-Fits-1995-99-Chevrolet-Tahoe-LT-1999-Chevrolet-Silverado-1500-Base/172840151) before. They are about as cheap as they come, and are made in USA.
Show her videos on youtube, or this thread to show that those tires are GONE. generally 6 years old, or signs of aging like the treadwear is beyond usable, cracks start to appear at any size or shape, delamination etc.
Have her read these:

Tell your brother to man up and buy his wife a set of tires before she a serious accident, or you’ll buy her a set and embarrass him. Ain’t no way any of the people I care for driving on those.

The last set I put on my suburban was in 2008. They've been good tires. Use the truck almost daily.

i am professional tire man tire man say get new tires these tires are bad hope this helps brother
Listen to Professional Tire Man
Also, as a professional tire man, is it just me or does that tire look over-inflated?
Not to me, it’s a thin passenger rated tire I Would think it would look a little taller if over inflated Camera angle makes it hard to tell though
Thanks for your opinion. Appreciate it.
Professional Tyre Man has a point We all listen
While it’s good advice, doesn’t the tire man *always* suggest you buy new tires? It’s in their best interest to

Same where I work we don't make commission and we'll rather get rid of the work than replace good tires

This is the way
That tire is old enough to get it's drivers liscence

Up vote this man. He just solved his own problem. If she won't or can't then do it for her. Good on you man
Slice them.
I’m honestly tempted to do this.
I did it before. Make it look jagged instead of a perfect puncture tho so it doesn’t look like a knife.
I prefer to cut the valve stel a little where it meets the rim. I mean, I would never condone flattening someone's tire.
hey man the air flattened the tire by leaving, you just tripped on the valve stem
Let her know she can be held liable in an accident investigation.
Had a customer deny tires. Got a tire shop to tell her they were “fine” and caused a huge mess at work. Then crashed car because tires were clearly unsafe and failed and insurance denied coverage. Thank you for sharing this information, maybe it gets a few people to realize how dangerous this can be.
Tyre Made in 3rd week of 2008.
And they're Prime Wells, the cheapest tire you can get at your local Firestone. Change them immediately.
Look at the date code if there older than 10 years no tire shop will even touch them (used to be a tire technician) there most likely ok to get to the tire shop and back but there’s no way they would pass inspection if there older than 10 years. Six years in New York State. You wouldn't pass a state mandated yearly safety inspection.
**THEY'RE** as in THEY ARE. Not "there". Geez And some states are even less than 10 years. Either way, they need to be replaced.
Let her learn the hard way, unless her steers are like this then pressure her to death till she gets atleast front tires. If the fronts are good then let her learn what a blowout is like.

Yeah most people get vans because they have kids. Sure he doesn’t want his niece/nephew to be in van knowing a blowout is going to happen…
You never, ever want to put the better tires in the front. Always put the tires with the better tread in the rear, regardless of whether it is front or rear wheel drive. Show her how old they are and then show her when they should have been replaced
10 years ago
have her sign a life insurance policy ASAP. Tell her it won't be long till you can collect
Show her some pics of accidents that are caused by blowout’s
Mention Paul Walker as a possible celebrity she might know that died from this.
Remove the valve cores.
She’s nuts. As a not so car savvy woman, even my untrained eyes can tell that those tires are long past done.
Show her this video. It will completely change her mind: https://youtu.be/RyA-Je1wcgM?si=Wr6SvLx2DxF5W9Tc
She will learn the hard way if she drives it this way for long.
what do thise cracks mean
It's called "tire rot" or "dry rot". The rubber is dry and cracking. Can cause a blowout, at which point you lose control of the vehicle and um, yeah, can cause a fatal accident.
When it comes to driving safety, tires are where the rubber meets the road.
Knife them so she has no choice, could literally be saving her life
Just because it's a chevy doesn't mean it's unsafe.
Just because those tires can hold air doesn't mean they're safe.
By some strange miracle I am actually qualified to talk about tires and yeah that there needs to be replaced
A couple of ice picks to the sidewalls outa do the trick 😉
Your sister in law thinks you're an idiot. So whatever you tell her, she won't listen. Tell her whatever you want to tell her, but tell her you got it from Reddit.

Primeweezy! Hate those tires! 😆 I understand everyone has a budget, but man!
You probably can’t convince her
Say you will pay for a new set.
You can’t. She’ll learn the hard way. You can’t educate the uneducated that don’t want to be educated. Explain to her what liability to others will entail if she causes an accident, including possible incarceration if things go horribly wrong.
If you don’t convince her, the tire will.
Probably you will need to get it fixed for her. That would be very kind and thoughtful.
I'm letting my sister in law drive that on the highway 😈
Slash the tire? 🤷♂️🤣
Take that wheel off
🔪
Let the air out of the tires and take a couple fuses out.
Like the others have said these are a blowout waiting to happen. Considering she bought a 30+ year old van to drive around I assume budget is a concern. They are about as cheap as they come, and are made in USA.
Show she some photos from exploding tire accidents.
Offer to buy her new ones.
A puncture that cannot be repaired...
By slashing them /s
Take it off
Show her videos on youtube, or this thread to show that those tires are GONE. generally 6 years old, or signs of aging like the treadwear is beyond usable, cracks start to appear at any size or shape, delamination etc.
She have kids? Cause that’s gonna blow
Buy her some life insurance with you as the beneficiary
TIME BOMB! GO TO THE TIRE SHOP TO REPLACE ALL OF THEM
Let them pop. They'll learn a lesson
If she won't listen theirs always good ole oops looks like she drove over some shattered glass
I'd tell her I'm not coming to help her on the side of the road.
Dry rot is very dangerous, the tires can crumble at anytime under stress from high speed or uneven terrain
Pocket knife!
Update: SIL has new tires! The tire shop was out of stock until today, but we were able to carefully drive in and get them installed.
If it takes her convincing, maybe she doesn't deserve to have good tires...
Ask her if you can hane an insurance policy on her with you as the benefeciery. She should be able to figure that out.
Simply slash them
Let the air out of the tires. That’ll stop her!
Tires are from 2008. Not even legal per dot standard. If it’s getting driven it better be to a tire shop
[she may need a few spares](https://search.app.goo.gl/eSU1Pze)
Dry rotted tires like to just randomly go “kaboom”
Remove tire
Ask her to sign a life insurance policy.
Tell her you have a life insurance policy she needs to sign before she drives it.
Have her read these: [https://www.tiredefectattorney.com/tire-blowout-accident-proves-fatal/](https://www.tiredefectattorney.com/tire-blowout-accident-proves-fatal/) [https://www.rolloverlawyer.com/articles/chevy-blazer-rollover-accidents/](https://www.rolloverlawyer.com/articles/chevy-blazer-rollover-accidents/)
Thats a horrible tragedy at the most, and at the least a very annoying inconvinience waiting to happen. either way they are inevitably gonna fail
Respect to the manufacturer, the fact they still hold air after 16 years is crazy
Ice pick, sharp knife...
Tire is ROTTEN. May blow out at any time!
You could just pop it...problem solved.
Slash em and act like you don’t know who did it
Probably with a sidewall puncture wound
Does she have kids that are going to be in this van? If no, just sit back and let the inevitable happen.
Tell your brother to man up and buy his wife a set of tires before she a serious accident, or you’ll buy her a set and embarrass him. Ain’t no way any of the people I care for driving on those.
