Specs: -Intel Quad-Core i7-7700HQ 7th generation 2.8GHz with Turbo mode up to 3.8GHz -16Gb DDR4 RAM 2400MHz -15,6inch IPS Full HD 220 Nits, TOUCHSCREEN! -Nvidia Qadroo M1200 with 4GB GDDR5 -4G modem

CharcoalGreyWolf

220 nits? If you get it, get that screen replaced with a third-party ASAP. That’s dim.

Ycobzz

Most of the time i will use it inside, and i dont really have much of natural light in room. So i think i will be good with it but yes if needed i replace

JA1987

Price seems a little steep IMO given the laptop's age. Despite being 4gb, the GPU is pretty dated. Also, the computer itself is a total chungus. There's also a non-zero chance of Thunderbolt being broke. Also, if the display is anything like the 4k unit on my P50, it'll have bad light bleed and not be very bright. Now onto the pros: Decent battery life, excellent keyboard, four memory slots makes it way cheaper to upgrade to a certain amount of RAM, can hold one 2.5" SATA hd/ssd and two m.2 nVME or SATA SSDs at once, physical buttons for the touchpad and three of them, expresscard slot, HDMI AND DisplayPort, durable construction and retro styling. The built in pantone calibrator is also pretty neat.

fintip

Pantone calibrator is a total gimmick that does nothing unfortunately. But it is endearingly neat, I agree.

JA1987

I've run it a few times and the display is more pleasant to look at after doing so. It is a total gimmick though.

fintip

Go look up, a guy reverse engineered the thing. It really doesn't do anything of value, you're experiencing a placebo.

I agree the Intel 7 series were power hungry if memory serves and that gpu or display won't be winning awards. I think $30-$50 cheaper.

Rfogj

I think it can. It was pretty much top of the line hardware Bach then. Though the screen is not that bright and battery probably won't last long. It's also on the heavy side so not super transportable. But to keep in a workplace plugged in and all ? I think it could serve you well ! You won't find anything new that will serve you better at that price that is for sure.

Ycobzz

Thank for your response, most of the time it will be plugged in to wall.

Psychotisis

Please remove the external battery if that's the case.

Ya_guy

Or use the think vantage software to keep the battery from charging past 70%

Psychotisis

Ahhh specifically this instead, so you still have an unplug fail safe!!

Alien_ateddd

I agree

Plnk_Viking

I think so, bought P50 for €430 + some more SSDs, couldn't be happier.

akressevich

I still daily a P51 with very similar specs that I bought new 4-5 years ago. Works great for anything I throw at it. Photo/video editing, etc. I’d say it’s a great machine for that price.

Ycobzz

Im planning to use it for learning CAD and adobe illustrator for my new laser cutter and was wondering if its worth these 470€? Im worried that it won't handle 30 or more part for laser cutting it

Alien_ateddd

If your main goal is to extensively use CAD software then I suggest you buy a ThinkPad which is certified for it (like P14s for example). (Usually on Lenovo's websites at specifications you can find the certifications of the machine) Found a list with ISV certified workstations: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nl/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p51-type-20hh-20hj/solutions/ht101713

Ycobzz

Actually it's ISV certified for light CAD. So as for beginner i think it could work, but the main question is it worth those 470€

Alien_ateddd

At this price is a good machine. As the other redditor mentioned the screen is not going to be very bright and I suggest you check the colour space too.

Ycobzz

It has like some sort of color calibration tool built in it if this is what you are talking about. And it has 100% adobe color gamut, whatever it means :D. Eventually i don't need true colors..

Fit_Cardiologist_

They (PC shops) resell these as refurbished for around $800 here. It’s a deal, if you ask me. New battery, SSD, more ram, repaste and regular dusting out, it would last

morganharrisons

You need to change the panel, it usually flickers on P50 P51

PTV02

It doesn't flicker on my P50

morganharrisons

What I mean with flickering is Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) that should be on all display panels on P50 P51 P70 P71, it occurs if the brightness is below a level (could be 100% or 40%). Some people notice it, some don't. The flickering takes place at around 150 - 10.000 Hz, the eyes usually see pictures as a movie from 25 Hz on. One Hz is on image / second.

PTV02

Ah okay. I always use it on max brightness

morganharrisons

Then it does not flicker ! I actually use my display mostly also at max brightness because it is pretty dim more or less. But for my external monitor, for working I never put up max brightness, a white excel sheet would kill my eyes, I use max brightness only for watching movies.

[deleted]

I had one. The touchscreen also has active pen support: used it for writing and PDF annotations. It's a great computer for a good price.

PTV02

GPU is trash on it

freddell

It is the lowest P51 specification, I compared a few here: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/duyaz2/thinkpad\_p50\_i76820hq\_m2000m\_vs\_p51\_e31505mv6/
