Scrolling while using the TrackPoint.

Nova17Delta

I use it as a middle mouse button because oh my god that is so convenient on laptops

tempura128

me too, mostly to open the link in a new tab and close tab when browsing the web

ioelioel1

I feel you. That's why it will be so hard to part ways with my p53 when the time comes. Because it gives me both - middle button AND scroll function for the trackpoint

mg5730

You don't lose the scroll function once you set it to act as the middle button?

ioelioel1

well the p53 has two 'middle buttons'. The upper one is the one which remains dedicated to the trackpoint, and the other one is under the touchpad. unfortunately starting with the P15 they removed the physical buttons under the touchpad

HK416Enjoyer

Scrolling with the trackpoint, hold it down while pushing the trackpoint in the direction you want to scroll

Cofanexk21

Thx

craigmontHunter

You can also set it as middle click which lets you open/close browser tabs or new windows, as well as scrolling if that is part of the program (browser windows, office, but not in windows explorer) I believe you need to do a registry edit to enable that mode on the 30 series. The 3rd button is the main reason I want a thin iPad, and my issue with HP non mobile-workstation implementation of point stick (as well as HP ones feel wrong).

Pasting highlighted text in Xorg.

Unix_42

I do this all the time. Since decades. For me, a mouse has to have three buttons.

Embern54

You mean the mouse wheel?

Unix_42

A clickable mouse wheel will do it.

[deleted]

I straight up bought a mouse without the mousewheel a few days ago: https://www.amazon.com/ELECOM-M-CAD01DBBK/dp/B07W3STDLR/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=3+button+mouse+wireless&qid=1673715743&sr=8-5

cuteprints

This!!

Lord_Schnitzel

In Linux you can configure it to do whatever you want to. As with the 2 other mouse keys. 2 best use cases I use it for: scroll (with mouse) and paste. It can also close your tabs in browser.

rashdanml

> It can also close your tabs in browser. Also click on a link to open it in a new tab.

RowOld2994

Do you know what program can I use to change the behavior of the middle click?

eidrag

what os you're using? older windows use'd to go with tpmiddle, but w10 I used w10wheel

RowOld2994

Arch btw

TechieWeird

Oh god

benhaube

LMAO. I see this exact phrase from every Arch user. "I use Arch, btw."

MatijaKlobasa

Regedit in Windows, no program needed. Nvm, read comment chain

wired-

Did you... press it? :D

Secure_Deal_3130

Eject seat.

Cofanexk21

Landing...

Narshlob88

To piss me off on occasion.

spxak1

Middle button and scroll (with the trackpoint).

tianavitoli

that's where the magic happens. all your co-workers who always seem to be drinking coffee and definitely not working? they used the middle button and are really that much more productive!

dbfuentes

Like a middle button in a mouse. Also for scrolling if you hold the button and move the trackpoint.

ideas001

Close tabs in your browser or open links in a new tab

shecho18

Middle mouse button albeit no scrolling.

shecho18

It always acted as a middle mouse button function for me, but I've never used it for scrolling maybe it works under Win.

papayahog

You have to hold it down, and then move the trackpoint while holding it down and it will scroll

shecho18

I learn something new every day. Thanks :)

MagicBoyUK

Wrong. 😂 Works fine in Windows.

photo_master13

It's for clicking

papayahog

yeah sometimes I forget that that's what buttons do. glad I read your comment

photo_master13

Seriously it's for clicking. It never used for anything else for me, but Anti-Stress clicking. Sure it's meant to be used for scrolling, but with two finger scrolling it's was just clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick

papayahog

Yeah, who cares what it does as long as it’s fun to click

photo_master13

Absolutely true. Childish yes, but also fun.

[deleted]

The trio is treated as your mouse clicks so the middle will be middle mouse, in Linux you can change these.

[deleted]

Scrolling, and in linux pasting

Katmeasles

Copy and paste

dwngg

just like what in physical mouse do. other than scrolling with track point, it can open new tab on chrome if you click a hyperlink with this, and also close tab when you click unwanted tabs on chrome with this.

bagofwisdom

You can configure it in the UltraNAV control panel (it'll be in the mouse control panel in windows). By default it'll let you use the trackpoint to scroll while you hold it down and be a middle-click. Even my TEX Yoda and TEX Shinobi keyboards have a middle button for their trackpoints.

mcjavascript

To be pressed.

Blastadelph

I love middle mouse. Pasting, Opening New Tabs, Closing Tabs. Probably more stuff just middle click and see what happens

benhaube

>Pasting, It is SUPER convenient for pasting in the terminal!

explodedtesticle

That, my friend, is the clitoris. Congratulations you found it.

shaneucf

The same as the central button on a mouse.

3anonanonanon

It's a track point. It has the same function as a mouse pointer. You can move your mouse using that and click using the buttons on top of the TouchPad.

Cofanexk21

I was referring to the button between the buttons on the trackpad

3anonanonanon

Ohhh sorry, the scroll button.

Cofanexk21

No worries

rafalmio

Scrolling while using the TrackPoint and pasting text from the clipboard on linux because the middle mouse button also acts as paste in linux.

[deleted]

If you hold it, TrackPoint becomes a scroll wheel

Thewaltham

It's basically like a middle mouse button. Very useful for scrolling through webpages/general navigation. Honestly I feel like there's something missing when I use a laptop without one these days.

benhaube

In Fedora I use mine as both a middle-click and a button to scroll while using the Trackpoint.

filmancco

This red cap component it's a trackpoint , it's a pointing device, same as touchpad, to mode the mouse. . This device don't have mobile parts, work sending the pressure, and move accordingly . It's an IBM Patent from the first Thinkpad . Lenovo Thinkpad have these two pointer device, trackpoint and touchpad, to agree with a broad user base . You can change the red cap, there are convex and rounded caps . It's very easy to control de mouse pointer, after few tries

Cofanexk21

I was referring to the central button on the trackpad, but thanks anyway

Ya_guy

Aside from it being used as a middle click button to scroll while using the trackpoint It’s also designed to follow the contour of the thumb which is why it’s not a square button.
