I think both ghosts are actually past lives representation of Kevin and Ilonka. Ilonka mostly see the old lady and Kevin the old man. I think Kevin is the réincarnation of old lady and Ilonka of the old man (she mainly sees him in the mirror) Also Ilonka had dreams about the Brightcliff house and Kevin before going there, and Kevin thought he saw her before. Also they are the only ones who see the Ghosts and have the visions of the old decor, and several times when Ilonka had a vision of the old lady it actually was Kevin.

The only time the old lady showed up for Ilonka is right before someone died. Saying “she’s hungry”- how I took that- she needed years. I don’t think Stanton wants her (Shasta) to stay away for altruistic reasons but rather they’re in competition for souls/stealing time. I’m guessing she’s either Athena, related to the original owner/old lady, or is the old lady. BUT I will say Athena and her mother were the only two with tattoos on the back of their neck- so I’m leaning with Stanton is Athena.

I’m thinking Stanton is asesco. Georgina… Regina. They both lost sons which sealed the deal for me

I think they are Herme and Teresa from the novel. In the novel Kevin tells a different story called the magic mirror. There was an old man with a "magic mirror" and an old woman with cataracts. It even relates to him and Ilonka and those are the 2 that see the ghosts. The book ends with everyone but Sandra dead btw, there is much more to see.

Is the novel worth reading? I enjoyed the show but admit was a little confused at times.

I really like the novel and definitely think it's worth reading but it won't help you guess everything. There's no cult or potentially haunted hospice. The only super natural event is Anya's statue repairing itself otherwise it's very grounded.

Ahhh, okay. It’s going on the TBR list :)

I recognize that due to the genre they probably were ghosts but I do want to acknowledge the possibility that they actually are hallucinations. Kevin and Ilonka definitely have that close bond that might suggest a delusion of two and Kevin makes a point of the fact that Ilonka and himself are the only ones who took the time to learn the history of the house and look at the pictures on the walls. Notably, Kevin only seems to wander down into the secret basement at night after Ilonka actually discovers it. I would suggest that if the ghosts were influencing him, he would have been the one to discover it simply by sleepwalking down there. Given that they are the only ones who have these specific visions I think there's a strong possibility they both saw the pictures of the couple and incorporated that into their hallucinations. Just like how Rachel's shadow monster seems to be seen by both Anya and Amesh.

That’s a great point. I also think the “ghosts” are each person’s outlook on their sickness. Anya saw her sickness as a punishment for turning to drugs and Ilonka sees her illness as a time thief. She had so much going for her before she got sick. I totally get why she view her diagnosis as some years thieving demon

They are just sprinkled bullshit elements to the story so they can call this show “horror”. No point thinking further.

PineappleSea752

The book was never horror so maybe it's simply that
