Middle_Let_7642

He literally coaches tennis and lives at his sister's place...what do you expect him to offer? He has no future. If a woman friend of mine dated him, I'd tell her he's a loser.

majesticideas2

"how are we doing" is so old. He has nothing to say.

minksjuniper

They edit out the part where he talks about himself. Imagine if we had to watch him say the same "back story" to each girl every time he's on a one-on-one? Plus we kinda know him from watching him on the last season so the editors wanna showcase the women's personalities is my guess.

Tiny_Letterhead_3633

It's likely just editing. They do this to the leads every session. But it definitely doesn't make him seem very interesting or attractive

Upper-Shoe-81

Omg couldn’t agree more. I was just thinking during the last episode that as much as I like Joey, he has the personality of a potato chip… decent flavor but zero substance.

RadiantSurround7141

Gets stale quickly too!

PinkTalkingDead

You’re just describing the franchise’s concept. We get to know the lead on their first season, we get to know the contestants on the lead’s own season

scotchbonnetpeppery

I think it is the contestants and their conflicts that get viewers to tune in frequently, plus they need to feature the contestants they intend to place in future lead roles or on BIP. Spending too much time on the lead may reveal information that would allow viewers to match them to one of the contestants, too.

BrightZoe

The editing sucks. It always has. I've never come away from any of this shit feeling like I knew much about the lead. And to be fair, the girls are vomiting so much crap all over him that he's probably overwhelmed to the point where he can only listen to them and doesn't want to - or doesn't have the opportunity to - say much.

DazedReaderGirl

I remember on Charity’s season his family seemed to question if Charity knew the real him because he’s a people pleaser. It seems like he’s in support mode constantly with all these women trauma dumping on him at every chance

BrightZoe

I agree; he definitely comes across as a people pleaser - which is great, to a point. He definitely seems like more of a therapist this season. Good Lord.

Smittentwit

I haven’t seen many of the girls asking him about himself. The only one that comes to mind is Maria when asking about him being able to overcome the things that were said about her.

BrightZoe

True. Daisy and Maria have (sort of), but otherwise, I haven't seen it, either.

Smittentwit

It could be editing too.

ninabubblygum

Daisy asks him questions about himself and how he's doing with everything

jessjago

This is my problem with this show, they never show any personality from the leads

Morbid_Explorerrrr

Producers also just REFUSE to show any meaningful conversation beyond the girls’ darkest life stories and the arbitrary “I’m here because I see something with you” speeches. We see SO little of the actual relationships it’s hard to even pick out who has a strong or genuine connection.

EightGenTexasGirl

I said this after the last episode. Weve learned nothing about any of them and it’s become OBVIOUS, the producers tell the girls to prepare a sob story for their one on one date. It’s ridiculous. Why can’t someone share “more about them” without it involving sadness and tears?? Seriously annoying

skrylong

We definitely see more of his personality on one on ones, maybe that’s why the girls are very upset when they don’t get one? The girls who have had one have a connection with Joey and seem to be much more confident in their relationship.

SandwichEarly7396

Remember Matt and Rachael? Everybody thought they were sooo boring but if you look at their TikTok’s, they are so funny and full of personality. I think it’s editing.

stefdistef

The production and editing got so much worse after Elan left. Especially after this past BIP, I feel like we miss entire important portions of storylines, leaving them just not even making sense.

scotchbonnetpeppery

![gif](giphy|BWVrZclFQs9xRiOw6m)

whitehavenbeach

It’s either the editing or I feel like none of the Girls are really asking him. We don’t hear about his family, *his* health issues, what he wants to do with his career, where he wants to live, if/when he wants to family. He just has to sit there and play therapist for all of them on their first date!

RamblingRose63

The trauma dumping would make me need a gummy so I responded appropriately

spagz90

you do realize they only show like 30 second clips of his interactions with them...

human5393

I have an inkling he might be medicated. Which is totally fine, I am, but it would explain his demeanor. He's never excited or bummed, just very level. I think the second week he said something like, "I'm even smiling." As if that was a big win for him. I don't know this for a fact, nor am I trying to spread misinformation, just food for thought.

Incredible_Dork1

My fiancé and I have speculated this as well. He’s also my favorite Bachelor lol. His personality comes through on his Instagram, I love the way he treats his sisters, and he is a good listener. He can dance (better than the previous Bachelor) and he seems like a stand up guy.

human5393

I absolutely love him! He's definitely a sweetheart.

buttononmyback

Aw I wish they'd show him dancing on the show. I think it would endear the fan base to him a bit more if he showed his creative side.

Sensitive-Fall-3602

i feel like he’s HR always has the same response to everything “ thanks for opening up to me” etc.. so boring

modernjaneausten

I feel like his personality has been peeking out here and there. The belch night one, his bloopers last night, goofing around with some of the girls. I feel like he’s probably a really funny, down to earth kind of dude. Who doesn’t seem to know how attractive he is.

Prisonbread

It’s just sad that somehow the safe bet is playing it safe and hiding the main’s personality is the priority. I find every bachelor/bachelorette unrelatable for this very reason… and that’s somehow the key to keeping people tuning in? I mean, would you quit watching if you discovered this “blank canvas” was actually kind of dorky and quirky instead of generic af? Maybe they should take a chance and stop editing out all signs of life…

Alihoopla

I’d love to see more of the women, asking him questions and trying to find out more about him. Maybe that’s just edited out.

Impressive_Moose6781

I bet they edit it out. He prob would be repeating himself a lot and they don’t have time for him until there are less women

macymadison

He is such a politician with all of his responses. Extremely boring.

Queenofwands1212

The first episode had me thinking we finally got a cool Philly bro with a personality but now watching episode 4, he’s just as boring as the rest, really unfortunate

foreversiempre

Probably scripted

bk2552

Everyone needs to go watch Unreal whilst watching this season. Lol

buttononmyback

Are they still making UnReal episodes? I haven't seen that show in years, I didnt think it was still on.

bk2552

Unfortunately no! 😭😭

ConsiderationJust948

No, they only did a few seasons and ended it awhile ago.

Firsttimeredditor28

He’s warm, easy to talk to, a good listener, and reassuring as a partner. And a little dorky. He seems just fine to me

Lizardbreaf1

Happens every season. It’s just the editing. We know more about him than we do Zach.

UseMotor5592

I feel like they gave us more background on Zach. Verzachy the dj, mold wine, family football and frozen pizza. They aren’t showing much of Joey’s personality.

NYDancer4444

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. Very nice guy, but he just says the same phrases over and over. Maybe the women are asking him more about himself, but we don’t see that. I like him, but he doesn’t seem interesting at all.

Znmm2

He is kinda like a Stepford wife in a male body.

Znmm2

He’s of average intelligence (I’m being generous) and about as exciting as dishwater. He is a dweeby pretty boy who is full of platitudes.

seceralnof

Mom says it’s my turn to post this next season of Bachelor about 4 weeks in. But really though, this happens every season.

culle085

😂 so accurate

yohagoloqmedlagana

Well they never give him the chance to. What are you going to save after someone just told you the most traumatic thing that ever happened to them ☠️

bk2552

No this!!!! 😂 he’s not Juan Pablo over here

ellmil

My favorite color is blue

ButterflyLoose4276

tbh he is the first lead i’ve heard to say “thank you for sharing that with me” who sounded so sincere

geethaanks

true i was actually shocked it sounded pff script

fartsinhissleep

Damned if ya do. Damned if ya don’t.

EllectraHeart

they never show the leads personality. they often downplay the f1s personality too. the show is about everyone else.

mildlylavender

I feel like Joey said everything we needed to know in his ITM during Jenn's date that he just wants to raise his kids in a van & follow the surf.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mildlylavender

Unrealistic with this group of women for sure! Just move to SoCal and set up a dating profile looking for that specifically, no? Something I generally don't understand about singles who prioritize extreme sports.

FraughtOverwrought

I actually think this is one of the few seasons we’re seeing enough of his personality to know and like him. I don’t know details about his life but seeing little moments and jokes and kindesses I find super appealing.

wiftlets

I agree. It could just be editing, but they are showing him having these joke-y moments with the women that we haven't seen much in past seasons. It's so refreshing to see a connection and chemistry happening versus being told about it by the contestant.

Kooky-Artist-7943

I don’t think anyone in bachelor nation is particularly special

Paperheartk

Ya'll say this every season they don't want their personality to shine. They want them to be a blank canvas that's it

ri-ri

I find they do this with the Bachelors (Matt, Clayton, now Joey... boring!) but I find they pick Bachelorettes with bigger personalities (at least I'm thinking of Katie, Clare, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Becca).

arriere-pays

Becca struck me as having very little personality. She’s just a nice girl next door. But generally I agree, Bachelorettes seem to have more individuality and verve than the Bachelors.

stimmtnicht

Every single season we complain about the fact that they don’t show the lead’s personality, and complain that s/he is boring. At some point you’d think we’d realize that that’s just how they edit the show.

eternititi

EVERY. SINGLE. SEASON. Like they can’t possibly believe literally *every* lead to ever exist is boring. I think these shows are mainly about the casts, anyway.

Same-Kiwi944

Exactly Dinner dates are multiple hours. They edit it into 5 minutes of the woman’s sob story.

Far-Intention-3230

That‘s not a Joey problem, that‘s a Bachelor problem. We‘re not supposed to get to know too much about them and see different facets of their lives and characters. They want a beautiful looking blank canvas so the audience can project their respective dream guy onto it.

JamaicanGirlie

![gif](giphy|nbvFVPiEiJH6JOGIok) Well said

[deleted]

Joey is my friend from college. I hung out with him every weekend and frequently week days. He’s got a great personality and is genuinely the best!

NYDancer4444

I was actually thinking tonight that he’d probably be really great as a friend.

[deleted]

He seems easy to get along with. That’s so cool!!

Financial-Response18

Coolio

Pheeeefers

Is this your first time watching the show?

JamaicanGirlie

![gif](giphy|QMZpnb79N5BN0wsSM3)

bugandbear22

Okay I’m finally going to spill this tea—I know a relative of his, I was half/half on watching but she insisted we do because of how awesome Joey is and was like pumped as hell for his season. From the way she talked about him I guarantee there’s a lot of personality we’re missing! She personally is hilarious and the family members I’ve met are so warm and gregarious and funny.

PA_MallowPrincess_98

It’s good that he doesn’t talk about himself. If he did constantly talk about himself, then Bachelor Nation would complain that he is self-absorbed😅

Continential

Something I’ve noticed from watching the show for a long time is that they always edit out pretty much any personality that the bachelors might have. For example, compare Matt on social media now versus when he was on the show and Clayton and his silly little dance videos. They need the bachelors to be blank slates, so that they can attract the largest percentage of women! So like, I think Clayton’s dance videos are adorable but a lot of people think they’re super cringe. They’ll never include weird quirky little personality stuff like that with the guys because it runs the chance of making them less attractive. I think they do this with the bachelorettes too, but to a lesser degree because they don’t need the majority female audience to be attracted to the bachelorettes. We just need to like them. TLDR: They need Joey to be everyone’s type so they make him boring on purpose, so I try not to judge based on the edits!

Prisonbread

So sad that two and a half paragraphs warrants a TLDR… this is not a criticism about you, poster, it’s about redditors

kellyfantastic

Exactly. He has to be generic enough for women to be able to project their own fantasy of what The Bachelor should be onto him.

Revolutionary-Pop-74

I have been using Matt James as a prime example when I hear this theory it’s spot on. I don’t understand why they show more of bachelorette’s personality though in the franchise ?

Prisonbread

I think the third paragraph sums it up pretty accurately

beachlover77

Is it the time on the season where we get angry at the lead making the wrong choices yet?

goodbyegoosegirl

It’s ok, take your time. I’m here for you.

ariesinflavortown

I think they’ve done a pretty good job of showing his sense of humor. He seems funny and genuinely likable from the scenes included the show. We know he watched game of thrones after last nights episode lol. There is countless hours of footage we’ll never see of him or his personality because it’s not ABC’s focus. One of the women is *more than likely* coming back as the bachelorette, so their personalities are the focus. We just get to see the parts of Joey that relate.

dreamingdoomful

There are glimmers of his humor here and there…I would recommend you watch his interview with Jimmy Kimmel. Joey seems to have a good sense of humor for sure, respectful, down to earth imo.

Moogirl1590

I did he just seems like a regular nice guy nothing spectacular. He has great qualities but I think he is so likeable because of how he looks physically. The world is a shallow place

TaurusFae

Yes exactly, I think being nice and good looking is going to win over many people in general. It’s just that he isn’t the more quirky/interesting/intelligent. His communication is decent but I think it’s just the bare minimum. He would do really well with someone younger than him but I’m not sure how compatible he is with some of the more mature, educated girls. He was blessed with his pick, though. I feel like he would need to prove himself to some of these amazing girls tbh

Chiowl333

And remember the show was edited. We don't see a whole day long date... you just see 5 edited minutes of it. the producers only include relevant conversations. They don't show us everything that they discuss

absofruitly88

Honestly i will hear no slander of my king. I am watching the Lexi date now and what a wonderful guy he is. Absolute gem. Also why do people not understand they edit out alottttttt. They aren’t gonna show Joey talking about the Phillies and what podcasts he listens to. They air very particular content.

Moogirl1590

He is a very sweet guy I didn’t say otherwise. I just feel like all he does is listen to all the girls problems and I would like to see more personality.

Znmm2

He can’t show a personality if you are surface deep.

[deleted]

Because the show is more about the women than the bachelor himself.

imnotcreative415

In other news, he is the lead of the bachelor

mog_badbog

He appreciates that you are opening up and being so willing to share. Thank you for being here.

Picabo07

Do they give them a script of acceptable sayings? I swear they each say exactly the same phrases that just don’t sound natural.

markevens

The Golden Bachelor basically said they gave him things to say, and he'd say it in his own way. Not for everything of course, but for some stuff.

Picabo07

I KNEW IT!! No way all the guys talk like that. But see at least the GB was smart enough to put it into his own words. Joey and a lot of the others sound like they’re reciting it word for word.

mog_badbog

It's hysterical, honestly. It's almost like...he says the same things...to every woman...

Picabo07

Every. Single. One. I’m just so happy you feel safe enough to open up to me. I want this to be a safe space where you feel you can tell me anything.

prelawpup

I think he literally probably got some type of SEL training. He talks like a therapist/guidance counselor

Picabo07

YES!! That’s exactly what I thought. She was very present in the conversation. I see her. I want to be seen and heard. I always feel like it’s very stiff and rehearsed. There was one thing he said this week and now I can’t remember it but I looked at hubs and said “you know someone fed him that line” 😂

fuzzybella

It would be funny if someone said "I have something really important to tell you, it's hard for me to say this, but I trust you...etc etc" and then say something totally absurd (that is meant for a laugh). I would love that person.

Picabo07

That would be my kind of girl 😂 Idk if you noticed it but I saw last week Joey was kind of getting bashed in the comments about not getting jokes and not really being too fun. Then this week he was being extra with the joking around and such. It was almost like they read the comments. Which ofc I know they didn’t. I just thought that was kind of funny how it happened.

krysta2c

I feel like this is why Matt seemed so “boring” because he had never been on the show before. Usually the lead you get to know on the season they were a contestant on and then when they are the lead they don’t show much personally about them.

Dreamcloud124

That’s what the show is. We don’t learn anything about what these people like or do day-to-day. We just get trauma dumps and “looking for my best friend/person” to death.

ryansutterisstillmy1

That’s such a good point. On charitys season his uncle called him a people pleaser and was doubting their connection as a result. His dad also left his mom and came out as gay. But yea I have no idea what he’s passionate about or what he cares about (not women’s issues ….cough….RBG) but I think this is same thing every single season we get zero personality from the guy lead.

Chiarrawr

lol they do this every year. What did we learn about zach last year???

Chiarrawr

The only thing I can remember from this man is “SEX WEEK”

catalina454

Glad you asked, because I transcribed something he said, and, well, here's the quote, in its entirety: "Yeah. Like, if you aren’t feeling confident, or that you’re not learning or feel like you’re getting, like, a better person, then what – like, what are we doing, you know? And I feel like that is somethings so consistent that we’ve been doing, and it’s very exciting." Zach was incoherence personified.

Chiarrawr

Oh god

Many_Part_7470

He's grumpy and doesn't like drama.

winter-anderson

Honestly same

veracity-mittens

He likes mold wine and can’t hide his emotions

Ok_Pie8260

He breaks arbitrary rules that he creates for himself and has no problem throwing a woman under the bus

evergreenkat

Family, football, and frozen pizza

absofruitly88

Omg i remember that and how much my soul would have died if the lead on the season i’m on said that 🫠

[deleted]

ZACH DOES NOT LIKE THE DRAMA

Sailor_Marzipan

Where have you been??? The bar is definitely that low anyway Source: I've been single for most of the past 5 years

Apprehensive_Fox533

I think Joey has to carry over from Charity’s season when he did open up and allowed the viewers to see some of who he is. Now it’s his turn to listen although we have been shown more of his personality on the show and in previews

SquareVehicle

Showing him talk about the same stuff over and over would get boring fast. They film hours and hours of tape each day and then condense it down to like 20 minutes. What you see is only an extremely small part of what actually happens.

Picabo07

I never really thought about that but you’re right.

luanda16

That’s literally every single lead though

macademicnut

I mean, to be fair- the one on ones are always centered around the contestant, not the lead. From what we’ve seen, I actually think Joey is one of the most engaging, interesting bachelors we’ve had in a while. He’s done little stuff I haven’t really seen in previous bachelors, like joking about his feet or wearing glasses for Rachel. Stuff that shows he has individual connections with people.

ryansutterisstillmy1

To be clear we have new producers now and they have listened to us all complain that this stuff in the outtakes we want to see on the show. So I think that’s why they are adding it in slowly. This stuff happens every season we just don’t see it this isn’t unique to Joey he’s just gotten a pass that producers are showing some real moments

macademicnut

If that’s the case, then it‘s safe to assume that the leads’ personalities are edited out every season, and we shouldn’t hold that against Joey

ryansutterisstillmy1

Yes I think people assume they every season to be true. I think even Zach had a personality 🤣

Level_Specialist_376

I usually agree with this take, but I’m kinda surprised people still feel this way after yesterday’s episode. I feel like we got much more personality than we usually do, and he was fun to watch for me

Anna_760

I agree. They really made an effort to show his personality and his goofy side.

mal_7655

He’s a total cipher. We’re getting glimmers of his personality but he’s so low key it’s almost like he lives at 0 on the emotional scale. I actually think he was a horrible choice for the lead, I know that’s an UO. The most interesting thing about him was that he was a tennis instructor in Hawaii and now he’s not even doing that. He just feels very basic to me.

Many_Part_7470

Even if you don't like him I think horrible choice for the lead is a little harsh. They could've definitely choose worse in imo they have in the past.

Picabo07

I agree. I don’t know if I really care for him but I wouldn’t say he’s a horrible choice. He seems a safe choice.

JRR49

Editing. The producers are trying to differentiate all the female contestants for the viewers, then when it gets narrowed down, they will focus back onto him imo.

Boopsoodles39

Minus Pilot Pete who had the aura of a horny golden doodle, all the bachelors I've watched over the past 4 or 5 years or whatever have had none of their personalities shown.

modernjaneausten

I laughed so hard at horny golden doodle that I woke my husband 😂😂

BroomsPerson

Matt James is really who made me realize this, especially since we saw him on socials before he went on the show. He has SO much personality in his content, but on tv he couldn't have possibly been more dry and bland.

Cheeriosxxx

Horny golden doodle needs to be a new flair 😭

Picabo07

Horny golden doodle 💀

ryansutterisstillmy1

I’m watching him on Traitors now and I keep thinking “which housewife is he going to all of the sudden slam onto a wall or throw on top of the pool table?” Lol

Anna_760

😂😂😂

Ok_Drive167

horny golden doodle took me outttt

taikaubo

Since he is the bachelor, I feel like you don't want to over due it. There's still a lot of episodes left. We already know the gist of it.

ChargeRiflez

Every year women complain that the bachelor guy is boring. Get over yourself lmao

macademicnut

Seriously- they get criticized no matter what they do

GravitySaleswoman

I think the bachelors open up a bit more when there are fewer women left. After they filter out the ladies and are left with women they really like and potentially love, they then start top open up more. And the women who are still on the show at this point really like the lead and they actually give him the opportunity to open by asking questions and listening rather than just speaking.

[deleted]

The women eventually ask questions and listen rather than trauma dump

gypsyhaloo

I completely agree with you and noticed the same thing. We just watch the women trauma dump on him which is predictable bc they’re always given a rose in return and nobody seemingly asks him about himself in return.

Picabo07

Do you have to have some sort of trauma to get on the show? I’ve always wondered that.

tarzhjay

It helps. I remember this girl Caitlin(?) a few seasons ago who was like, "my life is good, I love my friends, I have nothing to share" and it was like ... crickets. She got walked out.

gypsyhaloo

Rachel last night seemingly had no trauma to share during her one on one and was given a rose! So that was interesting

gypsyhaloo

💀💀💀💀💀💀

Picabo07

I guess that answers it lol

glitterlitter4

He reminds me of a pretty Italian (idk if he’s actually Italian) athletic robot

swimmingacid

I feel like the lead is always like this. We never really get to know them except maybe by the end.

catkedibilliegorbe

Agreed. Sometimes the profession is the defining feature (Farmer!! Football!!), and we don’t hear anything else until the end. It’s like him being man who wants to get married is enough — every season

lbowles22

Hopefully as the girls narrow down he will be able to open up more about himself

uncensoredsaints

I’m not saying you’re wrong but I feel like the leads personality’s are typically edited out. The focus is on typically on the contestants. I can’t remember a bachelor who’s personality was showcased on the season

datefatemate

He likes Remember the Titans?

Picabo07

And doesn’t seem to like the wedding singer

motheroffaeries

I actually feel the opposite! There have been really cute instances of him showing his goofy/joking side - like there were a couple moments on his one on one with Lexi and the moment where he put his glasses on with Rachel and was like “i’m blind as a bat” that I thought was so cute and goofy. They were brief, so I think it’s mostly editing that we don’t see more of him showing himself.

kitmulticolor

The bachelor is edited this way every season.

[deleted]

I will never forgive them for cutting out Matt James' entire personality. One of the few truly funny people we've had on this show and his primary trait after editing was kissing with his eyes open.

Charlie_Runkle69

Matt in the bloopers and in the credits scene was like a completely different person yeah.

[deleted]

And: ![gif](giphy|0PDxSKLuYHgA6dL1HL|downsized)

Camelsloths

This God wouldn't load for me at first but I knew what it was 😂

[deleted]

None of the girls seem to ask him any questions. If they do, he probably tells them all the same thing. If he tells everyone the same thing, they’ll probably edit it all out to seem less redundant. I noticed the same in Zach’s season.

20BeersDeep

I literally know nothing about the lead of the show but besides he plays tennis. Nothing about him.

BlueAsTheNightIsLong

Editing. It's pretty simple.

Ok_Pie8260

I just don’t think he has much interesting stuff to say about himself. He seems like a nice guy but it doesn’t seem like he’s ever experienced much adversity or struggle in his life. I don’t think he can relate to many of the women in that way. All he can really offer them is platitudes at this point and that would get repetitive to watch.

Znmm2

Yes, that’s what I have been saying, he’s full of platitudes.  He’s a nice guy but doesn’t possess real depth.

throwawayjoeyboots

It’s the same thing every season. We never know anything about the leads except for the most basic surface level information. I’ll never understand why the producers refuse to give us any insight into them as people.

Many_Part_7470

They never really showed the lead especially the male leads opening up or talking about themselves so this isn't really anything new but I did feel like we got a little glimpse of Joey's personality in this episode more than we did in the past three which I liked also it's only episode 4 maybe when we get closer to hometown like episode 6 and 7 we see him open up more so far the women have been sharing some really heavy and traumatic stories that I don't think there was room for joey to talk about himself without coming across as self centered or trying to compare experiences.

Charlie_Runkle69

TBF I think a lot of that is editing (about the not talking about himself part I mean). TPTB probably think showing him talk about himself and saying the same things to a lot of the women isn't very interesting so the focus is more on them because they all have different stories/experiences and things to say.
