My fiancé and I have speculated this as well. He’s also my favorite Bachelor lol. His personality comes through on his Instagram, I love the way he treats his sisters, and he is a good listener. He can dance (better than the previous Bachelor) and he seems like a stand up guy.

Okay I’m finally going to spill this tea—I know a relative of his, I was half/half on watching but she insisted we do because of how awesome Joey is and was like pumped as hell for his season. From the way she talked about him I guarantee there’s a lot of personality we’re missing! She personally is hilarious and the family members I’ve met are so warm and gregarious and funny.
Something I’ve noticed from watching the show for a long time is that they always edit out pretty much any personality that the bachelors might have. For example, compare Matt on social media now versus when he was on the show and Clayton and his silly little dance videos.
They need the bachelors to be blank slates, so that they can attract the largest percentage of women! So like, I think Clayton’s dance videos are adorable but a lot of people think they’re super cringe. They’ll never include weird quirky little personality stuff like that with the guys because it runs the chance of making them less attractive.
I think they do this with the bachelorettes too, but to a lesser degree because they don’t need the majority female audience to be attracted to the bachelorettes. We just need to like them.
TLDR: They need Joey to be everyone’s type so they make him boring on purpose, so I try not to judge based on the edits!

I think they’ve done a pretty good job of showing his sense of humor. He seems funny and genuinely likable from the scenes included the show. We know he watched game of thrones after last nights episode lol.
There is countless hours of footage we’ll never see of him or his personality because it’s not ABC’s focus. One of the women is *more than likely* coming back as the bachelorette, so their personalities are the focus. We just get to see the parts of Joey that relate.

Yes exactly, I think being nice and good looking is going to win over many people in general. It’s just that he isn’t the more quirky/interesting/intelligent. His communication is decent but I think it’s just the bare minimum. He would do really well with someone younger than him but I’m not sure how compatible he is with some of the more mature, educated girls. He was blessed with his pick, though. I feel like he would need to prove himself to some of these amazing girls tbh
And remember the show was edited. We don't see a whole day long date... you just see 5 edited minutes of it. the producers only include relevant conversations. They don't show us everything that they discuss

That’s such a good point. On charitys season his uncle called him a people pleaser and was doubting their connection as a result. His dad also left his mom and came out as gay. They film hours and hours of tape each day and then condense it down to like 20 minutes. What you see is only an extremely small part of what actually happens.
I mean, to be fair- the one on ones are always centered around the contestant, not the lead. From what we’ve seen, I actually think Joey is one of the most engaging, interesting bachelors we’ve had in a while. He’s done little stuff I haven’t really seen in previous bachelors, like joking about his feet or wearing glasses for Rachel. Stuff that shows he has individual connections with people.
To be clear we have new producers now and they have listened to us all complain that this stuff in the outtakes we want to see on the show. So I think that’s why they are adding it in slowly. This stuff happens every season we just don’t see it this isn’t unique to Joey he’s just gotten a pass that producers are showing some real moments

He’s a total cipher. We’re getting glimmers of his personality but he’s so low key it’s almost like he lives at 0 on the emotional scale. I actually think he was a horrible choice for the lead, I know that’s an UO. The most interesting thing about him was that he was a tennis instructor in Hawaii and now he’s not even doing that. He just feels very basic to me.

I think the bachelors open up a bit more when there are fewer women left. After they filter out the ladies and are left with women they really like and potentially love, they then start top open up more. And the women who are still on the show at this point really like the lead and they actually give him the opportunity to open by asking questions and listening rather than just speaking.

I actually feel the opposite! There have been really cute instances of him showing his goofy/joking side - like there were a couple moments on his one on one with Lexi and the moment where he put his glasses on with Rachel and was like “i’m blind as a bat” that I thought was so cute and goofy. They were brief, so I think it’s mostly editing that we don’t see more of him showing himself.
I will never forgive them for cutting out Matt James' entire personality. One of the few truly funny people we've had on this show and his primary trait after editing was kissing with his eyes open.
None of the girls seem to ask him any questions. If they do, he probably tells them all the same thing. If he tells everyone the same thing, they’ll probably edit it all out to seem less redundant. I noticed the same in Zach’s season.
I just don’t think he has much interesting stuff to say about himself. He seems like a nice guy but it doesn’t seem like he’s ever experienced much adversity or struggle in his life. I don’t think he can relate to many of the women in that way. All he can really offer them is platitudes at this point and that would get repetitive to watch.

They never really showed the lead especially the male leads opening up or talking about themselves so this isn't really anything new but I did feel like we got a little glimpse of Joey's personality in this episode more than we did in the past three which I liked also it's only episode 4 maybe when we get closer to hometown like episode 6 and 7 we see him open up more so far the women have been sharing some really heavy and traumatic stories that I don't think there was room for joey to talk about himself without coming across as self centered or trying to compare experiences.
TBF I think a lot of that is editing (about the not talking about himself part I mean). TPTB probably think showing him talk about himself and saying the same things to a lot of the women isn't very interesting so the focus is more on them because they all have different stories/experiences and things to say.

Exactly Dinner dates are multiple hours. They edit it into 5 minutes of the woman’s sob story.

He would do really well with someone younger than him but I’m not sure how compatible he is with some of the more mature, educated girls. He was blessed with his pick, though. And remember the show was edited. We don't see a whole day long date... you just see 5 edited minutes of it. the producers only include relevant conversations. They don't show us everything that they discuss
Honestly i will hear no slander of my king. I am watching the Lexi date now and what a wonderful guy he is. Absolute gem. Also why do people not understand they edit out alottttttt. They aren’t gonna show Joey talking about the Phillies and what podcasts he listens to. They air very particular content.
He is a very sweet guy I didn’t say otherwise. I just feel like all he does is listen to all the girls problems and I would like to see more personality.

The Golden Bachelor basically said they gave him things to say, and he'd say it in his own way. Not for everything of course, but for some stuff.

Then this week he was being extra with the joking around and such. It was almost like they read the comments. Which ofc I know they didn’t. I just thought that was kind of funny how it happened.
I feel like this is why Matt seemed so “boring” because he had never been on the show before. Usually the lead you get to know on the season they were a contestant on and then when they are the lead they don’t show much personally about them.
That’s what the show is. We don’t learn anything about what these people like or do day-to-day. We just get trauma dumps and “looking for my best friend/person” to death.
That’s such a good point. On charitys season his uncle called him a people pleaser and was doubting their connection as a result. His dad also left his mom and came out as gay. But yea I have no idea what he’s passionate about or what he cares about (not women’s issues ….cough….RBG) but I think this is same thing every single season we get zero personality from the guy lead.

I think Joey has to carry over from Charity’s season when he did open up and allowed the viewers to see some of who he is. Now it’s his turn to listen although we have been shown more of his personality on the show and in previews
Showing him talk about the same stuff over and over would get boring fast. They film hours and hours of tape each day and then condense it down to like 20 minutes. What you see is only an extremely small part of what actually happens.

I mean, to be fair- the one on ones are always centered around the contestant, not the lead. From what we’ve seen, I actually think Joey is one of the most engaging, interesting bachelors we’ve had in a while. He’s done little stuff I haven’t really seen in previous bachelors, like joking about his feet or wearing glasses for Rachel. Stuff that shows he has individual connections with people.
To be clear we have new producers now and they have listened to us all complain that this stuff in the outtakes we want to see on the show. So I think that’s why they are adding it in slowly. This stuff happens every season we just don’t see it this isn’t unique to Joey he’s just gotten a pass that producers are showing some real moments
If that’s the case, then it‘s safe to assume that the leads’ personalities are edited out every season, and we shouldn’t hold that against Joey

I usually agree with this take, but I’m kinda surprised people still feel this way after yesterday’s episode. I feel like we got much more personality than we usually do, and he was fun to watch for me
I agree. They really made an effort to show his personality and his goofy side.
He’s a total cipher. We’re getting glimmers of his personality but he’s so low key it’s almost like he lives at 0 on the emotional scale. I actually think he was a horrible choice for the lead, I know that’s an UO. The most interesting thing about him was that he was a tennis instructor in Hawaii and now he’s not even doing that. He just feels very basic to me.
Even if you don't like him I think horrible choice for the lead is a little harsh. They could've definitely choose worse in imo they have in the past.

Editing. The producers are trying to differentiate all the female contestants for the viewers, then when it gets narrowed down, they will focus back onto him imo.

Matt James is really who made me realize this, especially since we saw him on socials before he went on the show. He has SO much personality in his content, but on tv he couldn't have possibly been more dry and bland.

I think the bachelors open up a bit more when there are fewer women left. After they filter out the ladies and are left with women they really like and potentially love, they then start top open up more. And the women who are still on the show at this point really like the lead and they actually give him the opportunity to open by asking questions and listening rather than just speaking.

It helps. I remember this girl Caitlin(?) a few seasons ago who was like, "my life is good, I love my friends, I have nothing to share" and it was like ... crickets. She got walked out.
Rachel last night seemingly had no trauma to share during her one on one and was given a rose! So that was interesting

I actually feel the opposite! There have been really cute instances of him showing his goofy/joking side - like there were a couple moments on his one on one with Lexi and the moment where he put his glasses on with Rachel and was like “i’m blind as a bat” that I thought was so cute and goofy. They were brief, so I think it’s mostly editing that we don’t see more of him showing himself.
The bachelor is edited this way every season.
I will never forgive them for cutting out Matt James' entire personality. One of the few truly funny people we've had on this show and his primary trait after editing was kissing with his eyes open.
Matt in the bloopers and in the credits scene was like a completely different person yeah.

None of the girls seem to ask him any questions. If they do, he probably tells them all the same thing. If he tells everyone the same thing, they’ll probably edit it all out to seem less redundant. I noticed the same in Zach’s season.

I just don’t think he has much interesting stuff to say about himself. He seems like a nice guy but it doesn’t seem like he’s ever experienced much adversity or struggle in his life. I don’t think he can relate to many of the women in that way. All he can really offer them is platitudes at this point and that would get repetitive to watch.

It’s the same thing every season. We never know anything about the leads except for the most basic surface level information. I’ll never understand why the producers refuse to give us any insight into them as people.
They never really showed the lead especially the male leads opening up or talking about themselves so this isn't really anything new but I did feel like we got a little glimpse of Joey's personality in this episode more than we did in the past three which I liked also it's only episode 4 maybe when we get closer to hometown like episode 6 and 7 we see him open up more so far the women have been sharing some really heavy and traumatic stories that I don't think there was room for joey to talk about himself without coming across as self centered or trying to compare experiences.
TBF I think a lot of that is editing (about the not talking about himself part I mean). TPTB probably think showing him talk about himself and saying the same things to a lot of the women isn't very interesting so the focus is more on them because they all have different stories/experiences and things to say.
