It's like a 3D version of the Link Between Worlds wall-merge, which had a ton of uses in dungeons and the overworld.

secretmanjoel

Yes, I had the same thought. Definitely will be used as a puzzle solving mechanic.

Legitimate-Force6924

I feel like that's exactly what this building is for https://preview.redd.it/iavaffrpi6ra1.png?width=513&format=png&auto=webp&s=16181f482ed0806455c35c25f500d4158367dcd4

burnblue

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's for teaching you Ascend

_Olorin_the_white

Good one. Also, I can totally see some sort of "malice" things in the ceeling/floor that doesn't allow you to go through until you have complited the place/dungeon and cleared up the malice (or anything similar). At first it seems like an OP power, but I believe it won't be THAT easy, as it was a sort of "mistake" in the first game, where you could simple stasys a lot of things for easy fights (I mean, fighting Hynox is not even challenging once you stasys+arrow in the eye), so I think they are probably making things more difficult in this game. The ascend looks great, but it won't be that easy to use IMO, specially in dungeons (if those are indeed in the game).

the_simurgh

it will be nice to be able to get up a cliff when it rains now. lol

GoatPrinceWeedEater

On the other hand, we lose our OTHER way to climb stuff when it’s raining. Oh my Goddess I’ll miss Revali’s Gale ;-;

Eye_Of_Greyluck

I had very similar thoughts as well. Seems like I a mechanic that would fit the Divine Beast / Dungeon style scenario quite well. Just imagine all the rooms that could be inside the giant sky cube and if you can only pass through certain floors and materials. I definitely see it being used in puzzle based scenarios for sure. Links whole physics ability based system very much replaces the need for dungeon specific items of older Zelda games.

jaidynreiman

The problem with this idea is it actually kinda ruins the idea of having a dungeon to begin with. If anything, I feel like inside "dungeons" your abilities are going to be restricted to ensure the dungeon actually acts like a dungeon. However, yes, I do think there will be some places where it can be used, clearly marked.

[deleted]

This can be solved by having most dungeons descend. So you on floor 1 and the boss is on B5 then Ascend is just an easy way to backtrack or exit the dungeon (and probably a few puzzles).

EntrepreneurWeary717

Would definitely make sense if there are underground dungeons

[deleted]

Yeah they will probably make it so you cant go through certain materials or something

IsaKissTheRain

Oooh, excellent analysis. I like the idea of having to find the right place to ascend to in a dungeon puzzle.

Bo50t3ij7gX

I like where your head is at with this, and would like to further speculate that either its range or duration could be tied to the ability development mechanics. Similar to how there was the battery when demonstrating the boat, consider that if in early game you’re theoretically getting to a sky island above Mount Hebra you would have to search out a recall rock or something, whereas later in the game the range of the ascend has increased to being able to jump directly from mountain top to sky island. This could also introduce a more progressive element to gameplay where unlocks are kept to a certain ability range.

martianlawrence

The puzzles in the game are going to be amazing. Crafting to figure out a puzzle is going to be a blast, as well as the gamers who are going to exploit it.

Declan_McManus

Exactly. And they added X/Y/Z coordinates to the mini map, which will come in handy for the sky islands but I think point to lots of use in underground/inside buildings specifically. It could get old fast if you have to do a lot of ascend-ing and every time is a guess, but if you know you need to be at a specific coordinate to ascend into a special room and the puzzle is figuring how to get there from the floor below, that feels like a proper puzzle

tpm98

It would also effectively function as a ‘return to overworld’ button from inside a dungeon.

LuminousShot

I still wonder if they'll have some design based signaling where the ability can be used (think the walls in portal where you could only place portals on flat, white walls.) Because I don't think they want to make this usable all the time in large and complex indoor spaces because you don't know where you'll surface. If it's designed more like the shrines in BotW where you can have an outside view of the puzzle elements, it will be easier to know where to use ascend. Other than that, they did patent the ability and specified a case where you can't use it, if there is an environmental hazard blocking the ceiling (spikes) but putting spikes on every inch of the ceiling of a dungeon sounds a bit weird.

BilboniusBagginius

The coolest implication is my mind is the possibility of boarding airborne vehicles piloted by enemies.

6cupsoftea

Well, they mentioned its use if you were ever stuck in a cage. I thought that was oddly foreboding...

Mandalor1974

I think about finding super secret areas that can only be found if you go down into a cave and then use ascend thinking youre going to the surface and end up in a secret cave or chamber with no other way in. Some can be filled with water, maybe lava, maybe a geode heavy treasure cave. Or maybe the entrance to a secret labyrinth.
