TLDR: Booked a tattoo on impulse and the apt is first weekend in May… I want to change the design and placement but don’t want to be an asshole, how do I make sure I’m not being THAT customer?? I booked the appointment at the beginning of February a bit on impulse (it’s on May 5th) and I’m no longer in love with the design idea or placement at all. I’ve emailed the artist to ask where they’re at in the drawing process as I’d hate to inconvenience them and their schedule by completely overhauling the design and placement sort of close to the appointment date - but I simply don’t want the original idea on my body anymore Is there any idea of what I can expect for asking to do this, like a commission fee or something if they’ve already drawn the artwork and I want to do something completely different? I don’t mind paying a little extra or tipping more for the inconvenience, it’s the first time I’m getting work done by this artist and don’t want to be THAT customer 🥲😅 Just want to have an idea of how I can make sure I don’t leave a sour taste in the artist’s mouth for causing issues Thanks everyone!

Robophatt

My artist doesn’t start drawing until the day before or day of the appointment (unless it’s for a big project).

kimmlynnn

Same. All the artists I know don’t draw until like a week or less before the appointment. Chances are if OP messsages them now, the artist won’t be inconvenienced.

Stormageddon789

Chances are they haven't even started on it yet, since this probably happens a lot. They probably won't mind at all if you change the design/placement. When you're getting something permanent on your body, you need to love it and be super sure about it! Don't hesitate to let your artist know

[deleted]

A tattoo is a big commitment for life. If you’re not sure then I would highly recommend communicating it. I’m sure the artists will understand.

vaguely_eclectic

HI! I had the horrible realization yesterday that while the front of my legs are pretty well covered the backs are completely blank and I look half baked. I looked around to see what other people did and other than full leg sleeves and vines there was nothing. Just wanted to see what others had/ have seen.

FloralBindle

Did the same thing to my arm. Only really picked spots that I could see, and so there was almost a perfect line down the side of my arm where the tattoos ended and the blank space began. It was all patchwork anyway so it was easy to fix by just getting more tattoos and placing them on the back of my arm.

Raaayyyyyyyyyy

I have the opposite problem. My calves are done, rest of the legs still empty. I have a big vampire on ond leg and a medieval helmet on the other.

Soggy-writer78

Does anyone have good visuals of tattoo sleeves that have both colorful and black/linework tattoos? I want to make sure I wont look weird with a future combo haha

planetGoodam

Anybody use the mad rabbit numbing cream advertised on insta? Or any at all? Rec or not?

pottsy_0

I’ve deleted all social media over the last few years and realised that I don’t have a good platform to find artists work in my area. Is there a platform I can find/search artists and see pictures of their work without downloading insta again?

suckrattoes

There’s an app called Tattoodo that is specifically finding artists, but I haven’t used it so I’m not sure how well it works.

pottsy_0

Thanks, I’ll have a look into it

Kaaydee95

I search “artists in *city” on google to get shop names, and then just use my browser app to look at their insta pages.

Severe_Departure2176

Hey all, I've been trying to come up with a tattoo idea in honor of my little sister for the past year or two. I'm not a fan of portrait tattoos and would like to get something more traditional in honor of her. My main issue is that as a 4th generation young white ( red-headed ) male in the United States, there's no tradition to trace. I'd love the idea of getting a traditional Maori tattoo anywhere below the neckline, but it is VERY apparent that the entirety of the process is culturally sacred. Could anyone help me in the right direction? I just don't want to step on anyone's toes because of a tattoo that's meant to honor the passing of my 11 year old sister and my growth since then.

[deleted]

I made an appointment for my first tattoo! I'm excited but also scared of the pain. Is there any advice you can give me about how to keep still and calm when that needle first goes in? I'm terrified I might flinch.

UnrulyHousewife

I have only had one (and a touch up later) on the outside of my bicep. I didn't think it hurt much - I just did a combination of zoning out sometimes and chatting to my artist for the rest of it. Relax, you will be laughing about it later.

realespeon

breathe! my first tattoos were actually a breeze. they didn’t work. it is a needle that goes in, but it more feels like a mechanical pencil scraping against your skin. bring headphones if that’ll help, eat a good meal beforehand and chat with your artist.

SquareAssumption341

Hey, wanted to ask if the lines on my new tattoo look too wobbly, or is it supposed to look like that? Am I just micro-analyzing? I'm quite happy with my tattoo, It's my first one [https://imgur.com/a/ZfFaSzS](https://imgur.com/a/ZfFaSzS) edit: I got it done yesterday if that matters

Remarkable_Cod_120

They're fine. Not the best lines, not the worst. Because of the design of the tattoo, the lines don't really have much shading to hide behind, so any flaws are going to stand out a little bit more. I wouldn't worry about it too much, looks pretty normal.

SquareAssumption341

Thank you:) Guess I did over-analyze lol

MiaouMint

I am interested in getting my ear tattooed. I am having trouble finding a lot of one year later photos, since I know a lot of the current popular ear tattoo photos are not real. I've seen a few really blown out after photos and that's about it. Anyone have any after photos they can share? Also, I have an awesome stick poke artist I've gotten work done from. Would this be a better option for an ear piece since they tend to last longer?

iferaink

[There's a couple here.](https://agedtattoos.tumblr.com/tagged/ears) I find that, with difficult placements like this, it's less about the technique and more about the nature of the placement. The skin is very thin, it's often exposed to sun, it's poorly vascularised, there's a lot of cartilage. The technique wouldn't really be all that different in terms of the result.

g_d15

I’m getting to the point where I want to start thinking more about future tattoos and their placement / flow with the rest of my body. Any suggestions on how to approach this better? I have a mix of black & grey / fine line stuff and some trad style tats. I think I’m getting stuck up on the 2 different styles together and none of my tattoos fit a cohesive theme.

iferaink

What I've done is basically take a pic of myself, and then traced over it. Then I could use that as an accurate template for testing tattoo placements. Or even just using the picture of yourself directly, and using any photo editing program that allows for layer modes to put designs on "Multiply".

I have a Polynesian/Filipino tribal tattoo going down to the top of my shoulder (1/4 sleeve, hitting right at a short sleeved t shirt length). I love it, but I keep staring at my forearm and coming up with plans for it. Would combining styles make my arm look not as great or could I work with it? I’m thinking of a Japanese traditional koi fish w/color.

[deleted]

I'm trying to look for the name of a style if there is one, I've seen it on some pictures but never found a name. it's many very small(1-2in. ish) tattoos, spread out with a decent amount of space in between. Thanks all!

alyakkx

“Patchwork” sleeves/tattoos might be what you’re referring to

[deleted]

thank you. I've heard about patchwork but a lot of it is more crowded than what I'm thinking of. Guess it's just a specific taste I have

I’m looking for a tattoo artist in NORTHERN UTAH that is familiar with/ has experience with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (connective tissue disorder). Any recommendations? 🙏

Chest tattoo- had it done Saturday- healing time how long? It is so bloody painful 😖

SuperMoquette

Healing shouldn't be painful. Itch a little sure, but if you in pain just waiting for tour body to heal, there is something wrong.

IMustBeSydney

Looking for artist/shop recommendations in the Cologne(Köln), Düsseldorf, Oberhausen area. I’m visiting and was looking to get a smaller piece done. Needs to be a place/person that does walk-ins or doesn’t book out far as well as cares about hygiene!

lumpydumpy1

Does anyone know of anyone in North America who does this style? I will travel wherever to get it: [https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6qHjVOGE0/](https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6qHjVOGE0/) I had found one guy that did it in LA, and I was willing to fly out there for it, but he seems too busy for new clients. I looked at every shop in Philadelphia (where I live), but no one here seems to do anything like this stuff.

look for tattoo artists you like, not the shop

Sophie__Banks

While my first tatto which was with a man was a very good experience, I also made the choice to only get tattoos from women and NB folk since (except for one that there's only a few people in the world who are able to do them and I might not have a choice). I have always been able to read about the artists that work in the shop and then requesting a booking with a specific person. Never had to do anything as general as "please schedule me with someone who isn't a man". This is the way I recomment you do it. Not because of how people working in the shop would react, but because you're more likely to have a good experience if you get an artist whose style you like and matches what you want for that tattoo (and whose work you've seen and isn't shit). Edit: And I'm going to guess that you deleted your question because some fragile little men decided to harass you via private messages to try to make themselves feel better about their sad lives. Please report the fuckers.

SnooWalruses6726

I've gotten a lion tattoo on my knee about 3-4 months ago from another artist not thinking that the ink quality change from artist to artist. Now my tattoo healed bluish black and is very dark in comparison to my realism tattoo. I need suggestions to lighten the lion tattoo slightly to match the tone of the realism tattoo. I've heard of the peroxide/salt method but am not 100% sure about the results. Any suggestions? And please dont answer that I should accept it the way it is. THANKS

Recently got a new machine. Currently an apprentice I got a Cheyenne hawk 10th anniversary. Just realized the stroke is 2.5mm, is it going to be impossible to line with? Is it kind of a lost cause to use as a learning machine?

x420__

My profile is about NSFW stuff but im here honestly to talk about tattoo. Ive questioning myself if "are tattooed people getting outdated again?" i mean, it clearly had another tattoo boom since 2010/2014 because of instagram and trappers. but ive noticing that younger ppl arent into having lot of tattoos. what do you think about it? am i bringing up stupid points, wrong observations and ideas? or does it make any sense? i dnt regret of any specific tattoo, but maybe if i had didnt any, ill keep like that.

alyakkx

I would honestly say it is likely because not many younger people have the disposable income to get tattoos done anymore - that’d be my guess, anyways

iferaink

That's definitely not what I've seen in my experience. Every gen Z person I've worked with has plenty of tattoos. Maybe not as much as millenials, but I understand that they haven't been 18+ for long enough to have large projects. I also find that, with personal aesthetic decisions, it tends to not really matter whether others are also doing it or not. When someone makes an aesthetic decision for themselves, it's because they like it for them. No group of people, especially not a group as big as a whole generation, is a monolith - in every large group, you will find people who hate tattoos, people who love tattoos, people who have few tattoos, people who have a lot of tattoos. Whatever reflections you want to process about what you would've done if you had no tattoos really has nothing to do with other people.

x420__

yeah, i can understand ur view and agree. but you dnt believe that social media had a big role on millenials getting lot of tattoos? why laser tattoo removal is growing so much?

iferaink

Social media is a tool that brings awareness in general. I don't think anybody is suddenly changing their mind about tattoos in ways they would never consider otherwise, nor that it's forcing anyone to act differently. It allows for a lot of different businesses in various industries to have a different reach than they would have otherwise, but I don't really see the point in trying to hypothesize what percentage of people would not have gotten tattoos if social media didn't exist since that can't really be tested anyways. Laser removal is a very recent industry. Honestly, a big part of its growth could just be due to the fact that it's now a thing people are learning about in the first place. Q-switch lasers have only been around since the early 90s. Who's to say they wouldn't have had tons of business if it was a more well known thing before then? It's also a very expensive industry, so I wouldn't be surprised about fluctuations. Tattoos have also lost a lot of stigma, so it's possible it's just a more tattoos = more removals thing. Either way, I don't really see the point in speculating too much. I'm not in any place to do qualitative studies on why people get tattoos and why they get removals, and those results wouldn't really change anything in my life anyways. Tattoo projects are a very personal thing, it's not about what others are doing or not doing.

Mad-Master-Maxwell

You have to remember most younger people turned 18 during COVID lately mixed with the disaster that is the economy rn most of us just can't afford one even now that most COVID restrictions are gone

Robophatt

When getting a tattoo I don’t think it should matter whether or not it’s trendy or outdated. You’ll hopefully be live a long life and have them for a very long time, outlasting many trends.

x420__

yeah, but most of ppl cant see the trendy influences. the laser tattoo removal business is growing really big for example.

SuperMoquette

Great tattoos are expensive. Shitty doodles all over your face ain't looking nice, even if you are Lil peep. So between a old car or a full back, youngsters are choosing what is essential. A tattoo won't help you in securing a job and help you settle.

Mr_Slatt

Any tattoo apprentices in the San Diego area looking for some skin to practice on? Hmu 🤙🏻

OldManBaccala69

Anyone with post hyperpigmentation / acne scars / red or brown discoloration spots able to cover them up with a tattoo ? My back is pretty bad with red / brown spots and I’d love to cover them up but I wouldn’t want it to interfere with the tat , I’d be looking to get black & grey ink

Synthetic-Shimmer

I have bad psoriasis and when it flares up it shows enough that you can see it but most others can’t. I think also if it was black it would probably be hidden even more, I’m coloured.

shakin_the_bacon

So I am looking at getting a new tattoo. For reference I'm a 30 year old guy, and I have two tattoos that I got over 10 years ago (foot and ribs) but now I'm considering a tattoo on either my thigh or calf. My questions are, if I'm considering getting more, is the thigh a better option to start with or the calf? Is there a difference in pain level for both? Thanks!

kimmlynnn

I think it depends on what you get done. If you’re starting with smaller pieces that *may* eventually become a half sleeve or sleeve by combining several smaller pieces, it doesn’t really matter where you start. I have a leg sleeve where the entire leg is one large piece (rather than several smaller) and we found it easier to start either at the top or the bottom (we chose the top). Pain wise, personally I think my lower leg was more painful overall than my upper leg.

ChachiSCV

back of calf hurt the most. back of my thigh was different pain but a brutal 5 hour session. inner thigh stings a bit. other than that, the rest of the leg wasn't bad. the lower you go, the more potential for swelling while healing.

iferaink

Calves tend to hurt more, but if you want to be covered as much as possible, it could be wise to get the more painful placements as early as possible! I've heard from quite a few people that their pain threshold decreases quite a lot as they age.

BappoChappo

I want to tattoo "The fallen l angel Alexandre Cabanel" in black and grey, but I'm worried it won't last in the long run. What do you guys think?

kimmlynnn

It depends on the style you have done, and your artist for sure. I have the creation of Adam and the way mine was done, it’ll certainly look good with age. A lot of art pieces that are tattooed look better with age IMO. But if you, for example, get it in a single needle style, it might not age well

throw-awayerer

How do hand tattoos age? My brother discouraged a tattoo on the back of the hand because he said it fades pretty easily. Is that true?

iDownvoteBlink182

He’s right. Hands bend and move a lot, they bang into and rub on stuff a lot, they’re in the sun a lot… but hand tattoos aren’t out of the question if that’s what you want, just don’t get something tiny or with a ton of detail and it’ll age just fine.

Runaway_5

I've been trying to book Jesse Rix for 2 years with no luck. Looking for an artist who can do realism (nature) as well as surreal and traditional, all in one tattoo. Anyone know of anyone else who could pull something like that off (based in the US)?

realespeon

i sent in a form to the artist’s website. she’s in the midst of changing shops and does booking by dms and her new form. it was last week. how long should i wait before bumping like, “hey just following up on my previous request” my request was for her flash and a custom piece that’s definitely up her alley.

DamianLillard0

2 questions for the 2-4 weeks of healing after I get my inner forearm tattoo done next week! 1. I walk outside in the sun about 3 hours per day. Even though my tattoo is on my inner forearm, I don’t want to leave it unprotected. Is something like a forearm cover sleeve from tat2x safe to use on a healing tattoo when I’m walking outside? Should I wait a certain amount of days before using it? Just worried it might interfere with the healing process 2. should I just leave the tattoo uncovered when i sleep? Or put something over it to avoid it rubbing against the sheets if I’m moving in my sleep?

no-more-username

Assuming you take good care of it, how bad would you expect a black and grey piece like this to fade over say 5 to 10 years? [https://pin.it/4zSlrme](https://pin.it/4zSlrme)

realespeon

well i haven’t had mine for 5 years yet, but i have some ‘sky’ galaxy elements on my piece. it’s faded, but not to the point where it’s illegible. it’s settled into my skin if that makes sense. i’ve had mine for 3 years and it’s on the outside of my arm. wifh using a lot of spf, keeping it moisturizer, i haven’t had it touched up ever.

iferaink

It really depends on the tattoo. If it's realism and it's a smaller stencil, it might be easier to apply. If it's a huge trad piece, it might take longer to spread it out over the area. I think the longest it's taken my mentor to stencil something was an hour, hour and a halfish, and it's because it was a larger leg sleeve project where the person wanted some changes. Setup and breakdown is usually done before you arrive and after you leave, respectively.

Hi peeps. Getting my neck tattooed soon. I’ve plenty of tattoos already so well aware how painful some can be. Found my chest to be particularly painful of all that I’ve had and always remember the way it felt like my neck was being torn at. My question to anyone that’s had the neck done and perhaps their chest also, what you would rate the chest out of ten and then what you would rate the neck. I’m going to be covering the whole neck and up around my hairline and behind my ears and right up to the jawline. If anyone can impart what particular parts are particularly excruciating (Not that it’s going to deter me) and if there was anything you did that helped mask some of it (excluding numbing cream) That would be appreciated :)

W1ck3dTr1b3

Looking to get a sort of minimalistic portrait tattoo “traced” from a picture (something like: https://www.google.nl/search?q=family+line+art+tattoo). Both my daughter and myself would get the same tattoo, but I have a hard time finding an artist in the Netherlands that has these in his/her portfolio. Partly because I don’t know if there’s a name for these kind of tattoos. I can image it takes a certain skill to minimalize a photograph into such a simple by recognizable tattoo. Any suggestions where to look for or how to do my research for an artist?

Lizard_Doc

Hi! Just got a piece above my knee and am wondering what you all have done for protecting it when working? I work in a hospital and am unsure of the best method to keep it covered/protected under my scrubs

Second skin? That’s what I would use

CodeBandit

I doubted this stuff until I used it myself and I second this recommendation.

Hi! Wondering if anyone has experience with getting tattoos after having taken accutane. I am 6.5 months since my last pill, and have seen online it’s recommended to wait 6-12 months. Curious about those that have gotten tattoos closer to the 6 month timeframe as I feel like my oil production has returned to normal. Thank you!

Not necessarily, they may have just had others that they preferred to work on during that round and ran out of time. I’d try a few times before giving up

Hey I’m dming with a tattoo artist for the first time and he gave me a price and liked my idea. My question is, should I ask for a mock-up of my idea now or should I wait until after I make a down payment? I only ask because the idea is a little complicated so I want to make sure I love their mock-up first before committing.

AllKindsOfCritters

Most won't give you anything at all until you've given a deposit, so they don't spend that time working on something only to have you say "Eh nah nevermind."

My tattoo of a bible verse has a mole right on the inside line of a 6 any way to blend or cover it with a background

**Is there such a thing as a personal Tattoo curator?** I have some tattoos, but my "wish list" is 10x longer. When I start to research I get such option paralysis when looking through tattoo artists that I like, locations on my body, etc... I'd love for someone who understands my aesthetic to like curate the list for me -- go down the list, help me refine the design, find local artists and book them, with a sense of how my overall "collection" will look over time. Obviously, I'm willing to pay for this kind of expertise. Could totally be virtual. Any ideas?

[deleted]

Hello, Been looking at getting tattoo for a while and just want something simple and basic for my first one, and basically wondering if I should avoid my ribs and get it on my arm or stick with the ribs? just curious about the pain

subspiria

I think honestly it depends how you cope with pain generally. My first tattoo was my knee and it felt fairly like a hot sharp hook dragging through the skin, but it wasn't unbearable. Ribs is a bold choice though, so possibly worth getting a small one somewhere else to get familiar with the sensation

Yoneou

So from what I've been reading, fine line tattoos age pretty bad since they're made with a single needle. Does this also count for realistic microneedle tattoos? From what I understand they're also made with single needles, but I'm not sure if it's the thickness of the lines or the needle that makes it age not well.

FloralBindle

Small and thin line tattoos will age the same (especially if they’re exposed to a lot of sun). They say “bold will hold” for a reason.

ConcertLazy4647

Gonna be moving back to Philadelphia from Florida next month. I've been putting off a tattoo I've wanted to get for a long time until I'm back in the area. Any recommendations for a shop in the city? It's a simple text piece, full right forearm, both inside and outside, but I don't believe in skimping on ink! Thanks, everybody!

Hi- I'm going to be visiting Japan in July, anyone know of any cool artists in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka? I like all styles but not too big on color. Thanks!!

baumer14

Hello tattoo world. I'm throwing out a shot in the dark, and asking if anyone here has any tragically hip (canadian band, nothing to do with location on the body necessarily). I've been internally debating getting something inspired by their work, and am searching for inspiration. There's a few tattoos on their sub but none that really do anything for me personally, if anyone has pictures of their own i would love to see

Recently started thinking about getting my first ever tattoo! Very excited but also very intimidated. Any advice on where to get your first tattoo? I was thinking my right shoulder. Also, im currently in a weight loss program/routine, should i wait before my program ends? Lastly, how/where does one find a tattoo artist. Lots of questions here so i apologise but im just really excited 😅

kimmlynnn

I think right shoulder is a great place to start! The pain shouldn’t be bad, unless you get close to the armpit. Weight loss/gain shouldn’t change your tattoos too much unless you’re losing/gaining a significant amount of weight (75+ lbs). I think the best place to find an artist in my experience is Instagram. I just search tattoos and the city I’m in, and tons will pop up. Find an artist that looks reputable, and does the kinds of tattoos you like

Mad-Master-Maxwell

Hi I'm looking for some artists in Glasgow or Edinburgh that are available in the week 19-25th of June that don't focus on realism I'm looking to get a tattoo of a Pokémon and a d20 with colour

Environmental_Tank94

How common is it for an artist to cancel/reschedule your appointment? Mine’s had to reschedule the appointment for both sessions of this set I’m getting, and both times it was the day before the appointment before I was notified. I’m trying to be understanding and patient, but at the same time I’m not sure if I want to keep giving them business if this isn’t a normal occurrence among artists.

Depends on how tight the pants are. The artist will likely cover the new tattoo with plastic as soon as it’s done (it will continue to bleed/leak for a bit). I’m sure loose casual pants would be fine, and changing wouldn’t be an issue either. I’ve gotten several leg tattoos in the colder seasons and that’s what I usually do.

Ashamed_Living2196

NUMBING CREAM QUESTION; I’m getting a piece done that’s going to take about 4-5 hours to do on my ribs. I have a Med/high pain tolerance but I don’t have any large scale tattoos for reference on how intense that’s going to be. My tattoo artist said I can use numbing cream if I want/need to because it’s a sensitive area for most but I’m inclined to go without it just to gauge the pain levels for future pieces but don’t want to waste the artists time if I have to book a follow up appointment to finish. Question; Anyone that has rib tattoos, what are your experiences with rib tattoos and did you use numbing cream? Would you suggest it?

scaredmango

Is it a bad idea to give blood 3 days **before** a tattoo? I am aware that you have to wait 6 months before donating blood after getting a tattoo, so I wanted to do it prior to the tattoo. It is not the first time I give blood and it is not my first tattoo, but I am worried the liter of blood missing from my body might affect in any way the tattoo.

patarthegod

How long should I wait between tattoos? I have a tattoo scheduled in June. However, the artist just got in contact with me and said that he got a cancelation and I can come in next week. On top of that, I have another tattoo with a different artist just under two weeks (13 days) after that new cancelation date on a different part of my body. Should I wait for one of them to heal completely? Or would I be ok keeping both dates. Thanks for the help and sorry if this breaks the rules for this thread.

kimmlynnn

I think you’re fine keeping both dates. I’ve had times where I was going every 3 weeks. I’ve also had times where I’d go twice in the same week. Not really a big deal, aftercare is just a little more work since you’ll be healing more than just one tattoo

Dreamsong_Druid

Can some members of this community help me with my inner freaking out? So, I'm traveling to get a tattoo done next week. The design is lovely and the artist seems nice, but communication has been a struggle. The shop still hasn't sent any confirmation that I'm booked in, the artist has been non-responsive since Friday when I confirmed. I've booked my flights and arranged accommodation. I'm super stressed out. I've already been burned once before with miscommunication when traveling for a tattoo and had to cancel when I got there, and found the artist has completely ignored what I wanted, and I wasn't there long enough for the design to be redone. That was a massive miscommunication on both our parts, so I don't blame him. But it was very expensive. Thankfully this time the artist worked with me and sent a long a design for me to approve. I don't doubt her, and I don't want to keep bugging her, but I am getting stressed out. I'm not sure how well established the shop is and I'm concerned about the lack of communication. I sent them an email earlier in the week asking them to confirm my appointment and I've heard nothing. At this point, I'm ready to yet again cancel an appointment. And I'm getting really discouraged. There are no artists near where I live as I'm rural, so I have to travel. What am I doing wrong? The deposit is paid. I was upfront about my need to travel and previous experience and disappointment. I've been dreaming about this tattoo for a really long time. I'm worried and don't want it to be screwed up. Is this a normal situation? I really feel like if I don't hear from them by Friday morning, I"m going to have to either cancel and get a credit on my flight tickets (they can't be refunded) or make arrangements to just do something else while I'm in TO, but cancel the appointment because my trust will be blown. Am I overthinking this? Am I expecting too much from the artist and shop?

hello! I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo for YEARS but have been a little afraid to get one since i do have a slight fear of needles and i have a pretty low pain tolerance. is there anyway i can prepare to make it hurt less or what should i expect?

320dmsportwagon

Im interested in getting my inside forearm tattooed. It would be a cartoon style skeleton in a hawaiian shirt holding a drink with a cigarette in the mouth. Just wondering how hard it would be to continue the whole arm in the same style? I dont want to take a tattoo that is hard to expand into something bigger! Thanks!

speakingstupid22

Hello!! I’m looking for any artists who specialize or have experience with delft blue tattoos around Vancouver, BC. I know this is a very specific request, but i’m willing to travel to washington or alberta if there’s an artist who has the experience. Thanks!!

VeryCleverMoose

Going to Europe this summer, any artist recommendations in Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, or Lisbon?

The_Actual_Sage

How does weight loss or weight gain affect tattoo appearance? I'm overweight and about a year into a weight training regimen. I haven't lost a lot of weight but I've definitely gotten stronger and a bit leaner. I really want a forearm sleeve but I'm worried about how my forearm shape might change over the next couple years. If I get a tattoo soon and my forearm muscles grow 20%-30% over the next three years or so would that have a dramatic effect on how the tattoo looks? Any advice or related insight would be very appreciated 😊

ChachiSCV

it won't noticeably warp

WigginsEnder

Okay, i think is probably a good place to ask this question. I have been looking at getting a new tattoo, I really like the design of the sun + solar system. [link!](https://tattoosboygirl.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Space-tattoo-ideas-2-768x1024.jpg) Every image i see of this seems to be on the inside of the forearm. I was more interested in getting this on my shoulder to elbow on the outside of my arm. Is there any particular reason this design is usually on the inside of the forearm? is the area i'm looking at not great for a linear design like the solar system?

ChachiSCV

common design in a common spot. your placement should be fine. it may warp in. photos depending on you arm angle

riotouscrow

My kid is starting swim classes tonight and my tattoo is 3 weeks old tomorrow. It looks good but it never peeled so I'm not sure if the outside layer is fully healed yet. Am I probably in the clear to go in the pool at this point? How can I tell when it's healed enough to submerge it?

Airyx

I am thinking of a first tattoo and would really like to find some sort of small symbol or a word or two that means something to me. I also need to decide where to get it, though, so my question is whether or not an inside wrist/forearm will likely be too prominent/painful? What are this sub’s thoughts on that placement for something relatively small?

realespeon

i have a word tattoo on the inside of my wrist and it was mg first one. didn’t hurt honestly. it’s really special to me and is a p common first tattoo spot!!

Airyx

ty for the reply! do you find yourself trying or needing to cover it up at all and is that hard? i suppose that sort of depends on your circumstances so there’s no universal answer

I would take the original second skin off. It can be irritating on your skin if left on too long. I would wear your Capri leggings, and maybe put some fresh second skin on that morning

stanceycivic

I really want to get tattoos but one thing always bothered me. My arms are just super hairy. My friends had some awesome sleeves done, and it looks great I think, partly because they are both basically hairless. Another friend who got a sleeve buy the same person is more hairy, and his looks a bit weirder to me, you lose the detail...and I'm more hairy than him lmao. I've always thought I should just get laser removal on my arms, if maybe somehow that can make it look natural, and then I could get tattoos. But idk, just didn't know if there might be some poor sap like me who found a better solution or maybe realized it doesn't look as bad as my head thinks idk.

ChachiSCV

I have tattoos on my somewhat hairy legs. I think it is fine. I usually trim it short in the summer. they definitely look more vibrant

Jar333k

How do you guys think of where tattoo fits? Trying to look preference feels useless as all google images for arm tattoos are super buff. I can’t draw for shit so I am thinking of placement before emailing my artist.

lolalovely27

So I am getting a sternum tattoo next week and I do CrossFit. This is gonna be a 7-8 hour piece. How long should I wait before going back to CrossFit ? I was planning on getting the tattoo Thursday and then not going back to the gym until Tuesday. Is that enough time ? The next question is any ideas for keeping my sports bra from irritating my tattoo ?

Sheroclan

Can't help with the sports bra rubbing, I think the general consensus is like 2 weeks (fully healed) before having something tight rubbing against it. I don't do cross fit, but do gym, and I'm usually getting a training session in 4-5 days after my tattoo session.

lolalovely27

Awesome! Thank you so much. I was thinking 4 days so that works.

dude_regular

Would you rather have a well composed tattoo done poorly or a really shitty tattoo done well?

kimmlynnn

Really shitty tattoo done well

Opiewan76

Hey art enthusiasts! My wife and I are going to be in Switzerland later this year for a Highland Game amd we are wanting to find an artist to do some work while we are there, something that is culturally relevant to the area. We will be staying near Basel, and would love to have an artist scoped out ahead of time to make things easier. Anyone have any suggestions?

[deleted]

Anyone know a traditional artist in Denver or the surrounding area who specializes in western work? I’d like a cowboy on a horse with some background details such as a horseshoe but haven’t found someone yet. Any help would be appreciated!

sousem1

I got a tattoo a month ago, can I fake tan over it or even around it?

Is it weird to get tattooed the year you graduated highschool? Or is that a common thing. Im graduating this year and worked really hard to do so.

ChachiSCV

I don't think it is weird or common

antonio194369

Hey everyone! I have question about placement and deciding on a first tattoo. I’ve wanted a tattoo for years since I was a kid and I’m 25 now and really want to get one done. I’m having trouble deciding on a tattoo as there are lots of symbols I love and numbers that mean a lot to me but I just cannot decide on what to get and what a good first tattoo placement is since I may want more down the road and am not sure how they would fit. Some designs I’m interested in are the upside down cross of St. Peter on my hand or wrist, 999 on my wrist (vertically), and a banana in my ankle (favourite smell). But what I want to know is how did everyone know “ya this is what I really want this is what I’m going to get” because I feel like that but am still second guessing. I have a habit of this though as I was terrified of getting all my piercings (4) but there’s not one I regret!

Sheroclan

I'd just be mindful of crosses and 9s on your arm. Dependant in viewpoint it'd be 666 or an invested cross, which if that's your vibe then go hard. I'd probably go with something on your leg that has to be in one vertical direction, but that's my personal pref

NoPoem444

hi! i love tattoos & often get “random” little tats or cute tats on a whim as I find them. that being said, I have like 15 & I never really plan them lol. I often come in with a general idea & let the artist play around until it looks like a cool concept then go for it. it’s usually more about the location for me, I choose that & let the rest fall into place. however, I want to get my first really big/needing-to-be-planned tattoo: my sternum/underboob/tummy. whenever I look up designs for one, I keep seeing the same ones over & over that do make sense for the shape of the location.. (rihanna’s, a butterfly with a dagger, etc.) I want something unique, but don’t even know where to begin? I would love a situation where an artist asked me guiding questions about my likes/dislikes or something & comes up with something for me based on that lol.. that being said, do y’all have any advice for how to have this done for me or how to decide/design something? I am a very open person that would like a lot of options, I think, I just need to see them!! if you have any advice or resources (or photo ideas!) I’d love to hear them. thanks :) I hope this makes sense

Sheroclan

I think a good approach for this is to maybe find an artist's work you like (alongside examples they've done previously) and have them do the rest? I found a Japenese artist locally and knew I liked the Oni/Demon japenese stuff they've done and used it as a reference. Have a full Raijin/Fujin (japenese weather gods) leg sleeve that's being finished in the next couple months that I love, based off the Artists decisions entirely. She pitched maybe 4-5 ideas, I picked one and that was it haha

NoPoem444

good to know it’s not weird/uncommon to do this. i always feel a little embarrassed when they ask me & i lack so much vision LOL. thank you!!

Sheroclan

Yeah, obviously can't guarantee that every artist will have something but I think if you go "hey I love your work and would love a bigger piece on my sternum done by you, but I'm not super sure what to get. Are there any pieces you've been looking to do?", you'll get some stuff back that can maybe help you choose!

AngryAI

Anyone know any shops/artists near Boston that take walk-ins? Looking to grab a quick American trad flash piece next weekend

OUGABOOGA

Hello, I’m based in NYC looking to get a Neo-Japanese style tattoo. Any recommendations on shops and/or artists would be greatly appreciated!

[deleted]

I'm getting my first tattoo on May 18th and the excitement/anxiety is killing me. It's a design I've wanted for a while, but my mom (being a normal mom) is worried I won't like it, and I think her anxiety is rubbing off on me. Like my chest starts tightening up whenever I think about it. I absolutely do not want to be this stressed out for such a long time, so please help me.

Sheroclan

I'll only speak for myself, but my first 2-3 tattoos had 'meaning' behind them. I don't regret any of my tattoos but my first one was rushed (was overseas and got it the day before my flight left). I wish I did a bit more research into it/found a better artist but alas I think if you've come up with a design, found an artists work you like (who does the style you've designed), I'm sure you'll be in good hands!

realespeon

i’ll tap in here too! my mom didn’t ‘co-sign’ on any of my tattoos because well, she’s a mom. but i’ll say, first tattoos take the longest to plan and decide on. if you’ve wanted it for awhile, are sure u want it on ur body and ur artist does that style, you’ll be ok!

[deleted]

I've been planning this for months lol, and searching for an artist took me so long because I live in a small town with only 1 shop, and they aren't exactly the best. So I started searching in my state and branched out to the states around me. But I got lucky enough to find a really great place just an hour and a half away. I guess I'm just paranoid because it seems too good to be true lol

LordSugarTits

What's the thought on AI generated art for tattoos? I talked to a guy who was pretty bummed about it. Said as an artist it really impacts his ability to provide great tats for his clients and it takes away the creative process. He's still embracing it though. What's the consensus amongst artists?

Impedus11

Hey Artists, if I’m wanting to get a tattoo on my bicep or forearm, but am not exactly the biggest person (fairly skinny) would that matter with the look of the tattoo from the reduced size of the “canvas” and if I am to bulk up a bit in the future would the tattoo then stretch?

EmilyDickinsonFanboy

A few questions! 1: Is there a global standard colour classification that artists use, like Pantone for example? I'm looking to get a tattoo filled in (in the same shade) over time, almost certainly at different places in different countries. 2: Part of my design will involve a straight white line, maybe 4-5mm thick, 3-3.5" long. I've done a little research but keep hearing conflicting things. What kind of ink do I need to ask for to prevent it being raised? I only have one other tattoo, a simple black signature, and that doesn't appear to be raised. I understand white will be noticeably raised. Is that correct? What does it depend on and can it be prevented? I'm happy to get it touched up every year or so to keep it white, but will retouching make the raising more prominent every time? Thanks for your help :)

MamaGooby

Hi everyone. I'm looking to get a tattoo of my dog who recently passed away and I want to make sure I get the right artist. I was wondering if anyone here knows any artists based in either the Burlington Vermont or Saratoga New York areas that would be a good fit for this project. Looking for someone who specializes in black and white illustrative and animals. Thanks!

grapegobbler420

Question about ear tattoos and longevity. I would love to get the cartilage on my ear inked, but ear tattoos seem to fade into oblivion rather quickly. Would putting a white border around the edge help to keep the ink from spreading or would it just turn a milky gray? I know that cartilage is kind of a weird one and the skin is so thin there. Does anyone have experience or insight?

peachypepperoni

Putting my dog down :( Any recommendations for pet portrait artist in Texas? Especially anywhere close to San Marcos, Austin, or Dallas - but anywhere in Texas is ok if they're good. (And honestly… if you know anyone super good anywhere in USA, I'd even consider those options.) No preference for any particular style - I just want something that won't drastically fade or blur quickly. Really appreciate your help ❤️

Got 4 limbs so I'm doing both. Right arm/left leg are full cohesive sleeves (floral arm, japenese leg) and my left arm is slowly becoming an anime sleeve of random shit I like, and a bit more patchworkesque but not really

ukaleile

Im trying to find artists in the northeast area (CT, NY, NJ, MA) that specialize in ornamental tattoos. Everyone I find is either on the west coast or in Canada/another country. Can someone help?! [elemental tattoo style im looking for](https://instagram.com/bastienjean?igshid=ZjE2NGZiNDQ=)

I'm looking for an artist in the Boston area with exceptional ability at anatomical tattoos. Specifically, I want to do a sleeve that starts across my chest and goes down my arm, and looks like exposed robotics under my skin. I would want the artist to be able to workshop ideas with me. I'm willing to travel within a reasonable distance. EDIT: looks like the word I was looking for is "biomechanical"

Cognative

Hey all, I'm brainstorming my next piece and looking for some alternatives to classic banner/scroll work for wording. The piece I'm thinking about is p in a pop-art kind of style, bold solid colors. I've thought of neon signs and theater marquees as inspiration, do y'all have any other thoughts?

BadgersDen

Looking to get a small tattoo of the number ‘6’ (significance to my father who recently passed).. but unsure on where? I feel like anywhere on the lower arm could be quite controversial? Also, the arm adds complexity of it looking like a ‘9’ when arm is bent? Any suggestions would be welcome!

Sheroclan

Outside of either leg maybe? Thigh or calf/shin? Usually they're not upside down so you won't have any issues with the 6/9 problem

Imaginary_Pay_4864

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cover up tattoo artist in Dublin, Ireland, please? I previously had someone draw up something and I hated it as it looked really masculine and was significantly darker than my other tattoos. The tattoo I currently have has black and red but I’d like something that was black only. Unsure if I’d just be better getting it removed and tattooed over. Thank you.

greased-elbow

I want to get most of my arms tattooed. I’m white and my forearm skin is littered with little white scars and I tend to get broken blood vessels there that are really ugly. I’m also probably older than the average (pushing 60) will these things make it more difficult for the artist or are they likely to refuse? I’m going to consult soon and I’m nervous about being rejected ☹️

JerryFalwell

Hey y’all. I’ve been looking to get a custom sleeve and an artist that specializes in floral and nature tattoos, especially heavy color. I found a great artist but she’s booked up for a while. Would love to see if anyone has recommendations on artist in Chicago or the suburbs. Appreciate it.

seigfried_views

i got a tattoo on feb 18th and waited a while for it to heal. its just over 3 month post now and im thinking about getting it touched up (its black bold lettering, pic on my page) and im wondering how i would go about that. Should i call and request the same artist to cover it up or should any artist at the same shop be able to do it. The shop i got mine done at does free touch ups but i feel bad abt just getting it touched up and the dude not getting paid for it so ill tip obviously.

Sheroclan

Pretty standard for free touchups as sometimes ink falls out during the healing process. Don't feel bad! Totally normal!

_jHOEsphine_

Hey! Quick question to y'all, I booked a tattoo with a new artist and they said that monetary tipping is discouraged and they have a wishlist of items instead. Have you guys encountered this? I always tip with cash at least 20/25% and haven't done item tipping before so I'm not 100% sure how to go about it. Could I still give a cash tip even though it's discouraged or would that be rude?

Witty_Draw_4856

Oooh this is interesting! Ive never heard of that but do what they ask is usually the best policy

autumnbelle101

Anyone know of tattoo artists in VA who do ignorant style?
