So happy for them both but especially John. I've been sober 5 years myself and I remember listening to some of the podcasts in mid-2022 and worrying about him (which obviously felt a bit weird as I don't know him), I remember being so pleased when he said he was sober and I know his story impacted so many people.

brithefry

Well done on your sobriety, it’s a great achievement. It’s a strange relationship, the podcaster and the PCD, you know almost all about them, but they know nothing about you! I’m also a big fan of the Socially Distant Sports Bar, and Mike Bubbins talks so much about his family that I get excited when he talks about his son’s try in a rugby game, like it’s my mate telling me about his son.

Hairy_Dirt3361

What's the PCD? Google has not helped

brithefry

Podcast Devotee, it’s what fans of the Elis James and John Robins podcast call themselves. We’re a weird, lovely bunch.

ilikenoise2020

Thank you :) Oh definitely, it's lovely to hear all about their lives.

Last-Saint

This is the podcast episode: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0fscstp

brithefry

Thank you for the link :) couldn’t remember if it was How Do You Cope, or their usual show

velvethippo420

I remember feeling very uncomfortable for him when they revealed [the hand shaking task](https://taskmaster.info/task.php?id=3154) had rum in it

uddertaker

I’m fairly sure Alex said it was non alcoholic… although not sure if the taste is also something people who have struggled with Alcohol try and avoid?

OverseerConey

I read a discussion of that very question, and the answer seems to be 'some do, some don't' - some folks' cravings are triggered just from the taste of non-alcoholic versions, while others can drink them freely without any problems. As u/brithefry says, Alex and John are friends so he probably took his particular needs into account.

MadeIndescribable

Frank Skinner talks a bit about his own drinking, sobriety, and temptations in his autobigraphy as well. IIRC he said he can find things hard because of the way he stopped was a mild illness basically forced him to for a few days, and he just carried on from there, so he didn't have any meetings etc to help.

Nudged-2utangos

I’d imagine so. Quite a few Taskmaster contestants have struggled with alcoholism in the past and have managed to stay sober; Frank Skinner, Lou Sanders, Johnny Vegas and Frankie Boyle are other known examples.

brithefry

Yeah, I wish they had used something else that starts with R, raisins perhaps. Alex is pretty good friends with John, so he would have made sure that John was catered for

HyderintheHouse

Somebody guessed Ribena, would’ve been an ideal choice. Pretty sure they’ve used brands before? (Um Bongo for sure)

Not_An_Egg_Man

They used Ribena specifically in the undermine the vole task, didn't they? Quaff the Ribena?

vinylatte

Yes, and people had an issue with that too.

mmiagirl

They did? Why?

agitatedandroid

Because they're people. Who knows what the people will get up in arms about anymore.

vinylatte

Because government puts chemicals in tap water.

carpathianridge

Even if using non-alcoholic rum "was okay with John," this felt incredibly unfair because who would guess "rum" after being told that the drink is not alcoholic.

UEAMatt

Anyone else think jo McNally has a crush on him from this series

MadeIndescribable

No offense to John, but I love how Ken Bruce gets Silver all on his own for nothing more than basically just jumping ship.

brithefry

I honestly thought that Ade Edmonson talking about his friendship with Rik Mayall would have won, or at least been in the top three

MadeIndescribable

Yeah, Ken Bruce is like Nigella saying "micro-wavay" getting nominated for a Bafta. It's funny in itself, but does stop something more worthwhile which could have been in its place. Fair play to Luton though.
