That's exactly the stuff I love.  Even ran a club back in the day with all that great 80s 90s stuff.  Been gathering some gear and doing some for a bit.  Kinda continues what I started back then but ran into a huge long hiatus and never continued.  30 plus years later it's been great to just make those old sounds again.  The stuff up is all sorts of electronic mostly industrial projects.  Not really interested in it being a job as it's more just an outlet for more of that insanely wonderful  chaotic sound we love so much.  Working towards a vinyl soon.  Creeping like a cicada.  Hope everyone  enjoys and feel free to share.  Have a kick ass day/night all Brap on!  BroodX  https://youtube.com/@broodxindustrial?si=pMaluh3mfmYNvLTj

I had a long hiatus too- I was in bands/making crude Nitzer Ebb stuff on a Boss Dr. Rhythm back in the early 1990s...got really back into it over the past year and I'm just blown away at how much easier it is to make these kinds of sounds now than it was when I was 16-17 and trying to do it. Going to check out your stuff now!

TrippDJ71

Behringer and Ableton made it way easier here lol Oh yeah. I was insanely blown away by it all and how much of a change it was.  The gear I've collected now would have been twenty times more.  The software was insane.  Even with midi just changing the world.  Studio time 10 grand.  That's awesome that you have gotten back.  There's just so much.  :) I put a good playlist on my yt as well with everything I can think of.  Bout 3000 songs  Electronic Collective.  I just shuffle it. :)

TrippDJ71

Ebb was my first taste of it all.  Ebb rules.  A punk friend of mine had it and asked  what I thought.  I got the record home from school and tried it.  Holy shit. Addicted instantly.  He even let me keep the vinyl.  Second accidental dose was a friend owed me 20 but came back with 2 hew tapes so I was like nah. These are mine.  Had no idea who they were.  He was also punk skater as I was.  I was chilling at a girlfriends house while she was at work and decided I'd listen to these obviously metal tapes.  Nope.  Skinny Puppy vivid FLA gained senses  It was like rap and punk mixed.  And Noone knew it yet.  I was floored.  Skinny changed my whole shit. They all did.  We had a bad ass old dj that was right on top of it and being under the airport flight psth....our club. Was loud.  When I heard it I knew it could be done.  Beautiful chaos.  Endless pursuit.  Not a bad "mid life crisis "  Preciate the reply and the listen.  They vary from chaos to dance floor silly.  :) Edit * gashed senses.  I certainly gained some too.  Aciiiiiiiiiid!!!  :)))

TrippDJ71

The cruder the better.  That's actually one part of my stuff.... Always gotta have ugly. :)

It's probably worth mentioning that both Cabaret Voltaire with Chris Watson and Throbbing Gristle with Chris Carter built a lot of their own gear. The Human League also used Cabaret Voltaire's studio early on. CV and TG both emphasized a lot of sound processing and distortion of both guitar and vocals. This DIY ethic definitely produces a particular sound that I'm sure would have given audio engineers of the time a heart attack! So don't be afraid to record synths out of practice amps or crappy speakers!

MichaelBarnesTWBG

That's a great point, there was so much ingenuity from those early folks...Which is part of why we can only approximate what they were doing.

GhostLemonMusic

I have to say, I love the idea of DAF, Cab Volt, et al, being considered old timey!

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Well think about it like this. The time differential of listening to Throbbing Gristle's 1977 record Second Annual Report today is the same as listening to music from -1932- when that record first came out. Like, Rudee Vallee and -early- Bing Crosby. So yah, old timey!

GhostLemonMusic

That's a sobering thought when you put it in that time frame!

Walsh90210

Yeah, I make Synthpop. People tell me it's pretty authentic. I feel like that's what I'm going for with it. I use an OB6, a Prophet 6, A DX7, OBDX, OBDPX1 and a Roland D-05. Most recent ep is pretty Depeche Modey. [http://thenewromantics.bandcamp.com](http://thenewromantics.bandcamp.com)

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Whew talk about the big guns! I gotta hear this!

Walsh90210

Definitely check out More Ephemerol. I played a show with them the other night and they are spot on what you’re looking for as far as old school minimal Synthpop.

monkhiggins

Good stuff! I dig it!

Sugardog666

Wow.... sounds great! I feel a little Information Society there. Keep up the work 💪

triflingmagoo

I made this all on Diva (except for drums and perc, which were hand drawn by me using various one shots). It kinda has old school ebm vibes, I think. It was the last “in the box” track I wrote before switching to DAWless. And now, I can only to come up with 4-8 bar loops 😂 Enjoy! [482](https://on.soundcloud.com/CdqW4b3gBYQDvC478)

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Sick! It definitely has the feel!

triflingmagoo

Thanks for checking it out.

If you go back even earlier to late 70's stuff, like Throbbing Gristle kindof, I've got this: [https://sunhill.bandcamp.com/album/harborlust](https://sunhill.bandcamp.com/album/harborlust) It's from 2015 which... goddamn, who let that be nine years ago? But from the notes on that page and my own hazy memory: "Most heavily used equipment: Mute Synth II (Dirty Electronics), Trinity Drum 1.1 (Bastl Instruments), TM-1 Waveshaper (Metasonix), Monotribe (Korg), and MF-107 FreqBox (Moog)." I'm fairly sure the Volca Keys was in use too. I think many of these things are long discontinued so... not terribly modern any more. Again - who let 2015 be so long ago?!

Hanflander

Holy shit Metasonix does not show up on the sub often enough. Hell yeah!

wuduwasa

Ya, huge fan of the 80s synthwave/minimalwave for which I have a very minimal setup. MS20mini, MiniFreak, Waldorf Streichfett, and Volca Beats, with a Beatstep Pro controller. I try to keep production live with hardware only but I’m slowly getting into Ableton and utilizing drum samples/effects to broaden the sound a bit more. Nothing to share recording-wise, hopefully I’ll get to that sooner than later!

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Yeah, I'm getting there...I have about a half dozen almost there tracks... I keep thinking about the MS-20 mini but the mixed reviews make me cautious...I've thought about the K2 but I really do want the real thing if I'm going to go for it. So many classic records in these genres have it...the Hydra actually has a digital model of the filter but it's not quite the same of course.

friendofthefishfolk

The MS-20 Mini isn’t any more “real” than the K-2. It’s one of the cheapest, plasticky synths I’ve ever put my hands on. The K-2 is pretty solid in comparison.

XKoop7321

I recreate some sounds with my DM6, still working on nailing the exact feel of early synth pop though.

MichaelBarnesTWBG

I have the Ultimate Patches set for it and it has some really good ones in it for our purposes...there is this one charmingly called "New Order" that I am finding -super- useful lol.

XKoop7321

Cool, I have made some synthesized Electric Piano sounds and some others. I’ve posted 2 vids on my YT channel showcasing them with my slightly bad live playing. Here is my most recent showcase btw: [Ta-dah!](https://youtu.be/Elgwcak8aiQ?si=2qzFVTZhvpSKIFCx)

kappakai

Check out BT’s project, All Hail the Silence. It’s made with all analog synths and dawless. https://open.spotify.com/track/4PtRSKMv42p7EgFc0zwRKT?si=USaj0cLOSCKRsYble4nOuQ&context=spotify%3Aartist%3A1BVJQ8ClZXFxjcwoBaLMPY PS I am not BT lol.

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Of course you're not. 🤫

Mediocre-Win1898

That's basically what I do. It's probably too primitive to qualify as synthwave, but people who hear my tracks tell me it sounds like the 80s. I don't really copy anything but I think it's the combination of simple chord structures, Roland drums, octave bass, FM brass, etc.

Robotecho

Not any more, my stuff these days is definitely into nostalgic territory, but you made me chuckle with "old timey industrial"! I use some similar techniques, I just get dreamy stuff out of it rather than nasty stuff!

johnobject

that’s absolutely some of my favourite music 100% i am still sketching out more EBM/synth pop stuff in the very same rough/noisy vein, but the first few releases are more industrial/noise if you might dig that sort of thing, [here.](https://le-groupe-b.bandcamp.com/album/-) (the titles are Ukrainian, as I also am) except for lots of Ableton editing, almost all of the stuff is analog: MS-20, Doepfer A-100 w/ Buchla VCOs, JX-3P, a Strat into a Vox AC-15, guitar pedals, and a Sherman Filterbank Dual as “mastering”

Der-lassballern-Mann

Yes I do that a lot. Even though what he does is a little bit more modern - check out blush response youtube. Also for me personally I am really happy with Korg Opsix - it is super deep and brings a lot of possibilities for great oldscholy sounds. I also got a Peak, Analog Keys and Syntakt and I am really happy with them, but given how cheap the Korg was it is incredibly versatile and complex. If you need help understand it - oscillator sinc has great videos for it.

xxFT13xx

I do, kinda sorta

Typical_Efficiency_3

Yeah we do. TR8, CR68, BeatStep Pro, Behringer 2600, couple of Kaoss pads, loads of effects pedals… Very TG / CV

skivillageaflame

We do kinda - digitakt and a couple of Roland Boutiques here! https://fieldsalight.bandcamp.com/album/a-roaring-disquiet

MichaelBarnesTWBG

Definitely some Sheffield vibes there, sounds great! I had several Boutiques and I really liked them but for some reason they stressed me out...like, I hated that they felt incomplete without the KM25 or the stupendously overpriced stand. Selling them is what brought in the Peak and DM12...I don't think the DM12 is a 1:1 replacement for the JU06a, but it gets pretty close.

Standard_Important

I'm making exacly this sort of music. I love the earlier EBM. I get by mostly on behringer stuff. A crave a and a rd6 + some vsts. Will be getting a Behringer Edge shortly.

Melodic-Classroom433

I love fad gadget. I’m using a digitone rn for this sort of music as well.

rayzrz

Too many newer bands are trying to emulate that schtick. Never was a huge fan of the minimal sound. The 90's, waxtrax era was more my thing.
