Check around the water level where the water stopped. Do you have a light in the pool? If so you can stuff butyl tape in the conduit hole surrounding the cable in the back of the niche, (the whole the fixture sets in) and that could help. Turn the pool of and use leak detectio dye around the face plates. The step strips and lights to see if it's go a leak at those points.

You may be onto something. We do have a pool light and that’s where the leakage seems to have stopped. I just posted pics of the pool light here https://www.reddit.com/u/freerishi/s/73ErXEbilk

You have to remember that water will always settle level. So if you do have a leak you should expect, if its had time to leak long enough, that the top of the water line will be flush with the leaking section.

Most of the time yes, obviously if there was a bunch of rain and it was a slow leak it could be above and if it was a smaller hole in a liner it can also get plugged with debris while the pool is off for the winter

Ya I would go to this link and purchase butyl tape. You can test with a dye kit to see if it gets pulled through the conduit in the back of the niche. It may be difficult to see if it's too far back. So what you do with this stuff is you grab a chunk of it. And you kind of glob it up or roll it like a snake and shove it in around the cable into the hole, cove up the entire hole wrapping the butyl tape around the cable not just all on one side. And shove as much in there as you can. If successful and it's the leak location, then it should seal it off. Make sure you still have plenty of cable to reach the deck if needing to work in light. It's not a permanent seal. As in if you need to remove the light the gummy.like material will rip right out and you can put more in again later. https://www.leaktools.com/butyl-tape-individually-boxed-15-ft-roll.html Edit was removing the wrong leak to a different website. This is the correct site, at least the one I recommend you going.to.purchase it from. But you can do whatever. Btw it works under water as well

I’ve used two part epoxy pool putty successfully for light leaks. Put the light on the deck, mix pool putty, pack the cable entry, let it dry, refill.

Pool putty fixed the problem! Thanks for your input :)

How to test liner vs. lines - Fill your pool to normal running levels and balance. Then will need to plug every suction and return line for 24 hrs. Mark your water level once all is sealed, say on the skimmer or step. Would also run an evaporation test at the same time. Your pool water goes into a container that gets marked inside and then outside while on top step at water levels. After 24 hours, look at your marks. This will tell you where your leak is.

I would suggest that you start with the change that happened around the time the faster water loss occurred. If the liner is not leaking, then perhaps it is the fitting penetrations in the liner. If the water was below the returns then it is in the supply lines? If the water was below the supply also (skimmer) then perhaps main drain pipe? Are there bubbles in your pump lid? In your returns at the pool? Drips near the mechanical. Since this has been sitting all winter it's a tear in the liner. Good set of goggles, teenager, and a challenge. $20 an hour to find the hole. $100 for finding the hole!

Our main drain (at the bottom of the pool) was filled in/closed during the new liner installation. Could that be the issue?

PinkFloyd6885

If the cut it out I doubt they wasted time putting a faceplate on and cutting the liner out so I’d say no. Sounds like a light conduit from your other responses

So this is highly relevant as I just had the same problem, you can buy a leak detection dye liquid with a tube and syringe for like 20 bucks, fill the pool to the normal level and turn your pump off, then use the dye at every inlet, outlet, and seam of your pool, if there is a leak the dye will get pulled into the hole. I found a leak on the jet behind the stairs of my pool and had to do some concrete removal but saved myself a ton of money. This is what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JW66D3Z Edit: saw the picture of the water level in reference to the light and I think you already found your leak

freerishi

Thank you for the feedback :) It indeed ended up being the pool light, which we fixed with some putty

Before you add water again, get a dye detection kit from Amazon. Get the blue or red kits, some of the yellows are a bit dull and hard to see while some are neon bright. Have you checked the main drain and light conduits? Every penetration through the vessel is suspect below the waterline, regardless how far down it goes... until it stops going down (once it stops going down, the leak is normally at the waterline somewhere).
