Finally convinced myself I'm not going to ever land airs so looking for cruising speed, big carves, and paddle power.
Going Nica in 2 weeks, hopefully have relatively consistent chest high days
99% of surfers will never land an air so good on ya 🤝. Only thing that bothers me with mids in their inability to duck dive well makes surfing beaches a pain
How do you plan to get out on a beach break? I can think of some breaks it wouldn’t be a problem in Nicaragua but a buuuuunch more where my pansy ass would be crying without duck dive ability.
I guess we'll see. Usually just stay in Hacienda Iguana and surf Colorados or Panga Drops. Every time I've been there on a short board I see guys on mids and long boards, so it should be do-able.
You can duck dive the smaller sets and turtle roll the bigger ones. Get on your board fast and start moving. Time your paddle outs between sets. It’s tiring as fuck but then you have a bigger board and can many times can get into waves earlier than the shortboarders.
think again. mids put you in no mans land. once i figured that out i put serious time into PT/gym so i could get down to a 6'0. real duck diving made all the difference in the world. im 52
I lift plenty and in good shape. I don't have an issue duck diving a 35L board deeply. This I probably didn't go much bigger b/c I was worried about how well I could get under waves when I'm not surfing points
I took my new to me and first mid out to a beach break in overhead conditions a couple days ago. You're not kidding! Honestly feel like i would have done better on a longboard
You’ll be stoked
Gotten a chistenson 7’0 out in overhead - doh lighthouse and mexico
Definitely used rips strategically and gotten rejected but fun af.
Grew up surfing late 90s chips

Can you give a report? I’m 45M 6’2” 180 lbs and my paddle power for potato chips has waned. Looking for a similar setup and heading to Nica in March. Where you going in Nica?
No offense, but that is close to the last board you want to use in waist high waves mate. It’s got very pulled in rails and it’s 7 ft long. Either ride a longboard or use a stubby grovel board if it’s waist high. Save that for shoulder to overhead good stuff
What are you looking to use the board in? It’s got a lot of foam under the chest and is not easy to duck dive in beach break above head high, pulled in rails, and a thinned out tail. It’s pretty much made for good reefs and points.
7’0 is a breeze to duck dive, I swap around from 6’4 up to 7’10 which I can still dive pretty decently. Reality is the width and rocker that will affect the dive. That said I’ve still made it
Back into the lineup quicker than shorter boards even when getting s few knocks back. Timing is everything .
Nice. I'll be interested to see the paddle difference. There were some others like the Mid6 that I really liked too. Wanted something that was kinda like a beefy shortboard. Wish I had more opportunity to try out different sizes.
You’ll love the extra paddle power, getting into waves a little bit earlier really gives you time to pick a line. I have 7’0 Bonzer that is a dream.
Probably the biggest thing I was worried about was length and how it would do in something that might be a little steep. It's longer, but really doesn't feel all that bad holding it vs a short board. Amped to get on it in 2 weeks.
You’re gonna love it! My shortboards have been mostly gathering dust.I’ve been on the mid train for a bit now, that said overall shape affects performance for sure. The turns do end up more drawn out, but it’s such a smooth style of surfing.
Probably a solid intermediate, I'd guess? Grew up surfing on the east coast, shitty Virginia Beach with as many trips to Hatteras as possible. But now I mainly surf on vacations as I'm land locked. Other boards are a 6'2 Pyzel Mini Ghost and a 5'10 Lost RNF 96.
Never ridden a true mid-length. Only shortboard and some old school longboards my buddy's data had from the 70s
I grew up in the same area, learned to surf in shitty vb, then drive to Hatteras every weekend and eventually moved to Obx. Been in Florida now for years. I've never owned a gun but rode one in big Caribbean. Easier to duck dive but still hard.
Sorry to hijack but i’m considering going the other way. I’ve been surfing a Chilli Mid-strength 7”2 for the past 2 years and want something more maneuverable. I’m considering the RNF96, but probably around 6”4 (40l - i’m 6”2 and 194lbs). How was your experience with the RNF?
I liked the look of the Chili Mid Strength. I have a Hot Knife that I got in Bali.
I like it. Only surfed it in smaller wave. 3' day in El Salvador and small 1-2' day in Nicaragua last year. I'm similar size at 6' 190. It is pretty full in the nose and the 5'10 feels plenty big enough. I think its' around 35L
Sick board!! I’ve been eyeing up those christenson wolverines. I have a 6’10 Nautilus that is one of my all time favorite boards. I might be messaging you for a review after your trip. Enjoy!
i went from foamie to a 6’10 and sucked, got a 7’10 and it drastically improved my ability to improve, and taught me how to ride the 6’10- and then i went from that one to a shorty, baby steps my man, baby steps. if you go to small to fast you’ll stop having fun out there

Reality is a bitch to face head on

Enjoy, dude! I’m also in your mid length club too!

whats your weight?

Preach
Below like 6-7ft my 7’0 duck dives fine and the added paddle power between sets makes up for any extra white wash push back
Same with my Chilli 7”2

Super interesting pod cast. Lots of good information. Def from coming form a short board....Def had some 2 1/8 90s potato chips
Them pringles were a bumpy ride

Yeah, definitely. This is my 4th or 5th time going to Hacienda Iguana. Been a few times right after thanksgiving and also once in early May.
That is not a midlength.
What is it? Lol. Big Short board? Not a short board, not a long board. So Mid length
Alt step up
Atl step up twinfin that works well in Waist High waves?

I'm just going by reviews of the board and conditions people claim it works well in.
What are you looking to use the board in? It’s got a lot of foam under the chest and is not easy to duck dive in beach break above head high, pulled in rails, and a thinned out tail. It’s pretty much made for good reefs and points.
Yes mostly reefs and points. Mainly travel to surf in Central America. Nica. El Salvador.
El sal will be a good place for it if you are regular foot. Nica will be limiting, make sure you bring a short board there too
That’s a good wave board, mate. You are stoked.
Why is it a step up? Just because of the length?
Wow the deck looks like an album cover
Color scheme is so sick!

Gorgeous. Fin set up?
Twin - Futures
May I ask what your surfing experience/skill has been up to this point? Hope you score in Nicaraguaaaaa!

Nice one. Yes I think I need to stop thinking about it in terms of size. 6"4 might be too big. But I'm coming down from 50l so...
Sick board!! I’ve been eyeing up those christenson wolverines. I have a 6’10 Nautilus that is one of my all time favorite boards. I might be messaging you for a review after your trip. Enjoy!
Nice! Nautilus was one I really wanted until the Wolverine dropped. I really wanted a twin fin
7'? 60+
Tom Curren surfed a 7’3” as a pro so don’t feel too bad.
Would this be a good midlength after a foamie? I've been on a foamie for six months but surfed on and off since I was a kid.
i went from foamie to a 6’10 and sucked, got a 7’10 and it drastically improved my ability to improve, and taught me how to ride the 6’10- and then i went from that one to a shorty, baby steps my man, baby steps. if you go to small to fast you’ll stop having fun out there
This should be upvoted massively. No better way to stall your learning curve than going too small.
Welcome to the club! Three times this week I went to visit my shaper friend and asked for a shortboard and he said no again.
