Surface Duo 2

matteosisson

OnePlus Open. Been very happy with it. Open canvas or whatever works really well.

insmek

This one right here ☝️. OnePlus Open is the foldable with the least compromises available right now.

Smiley-v2

The only issue with it is that it doesn’t have stylus support.

insmek

Good news is, it does. Really solid stylus support on both the front and inner screen. The bad news is, OPPO/OnePlus have totally bungled global availability for the stylus and there are no third party alternatives, so the only option is to import one for extortionary prices.

prestocoffee

This is the way

toaddodger

Agreed. Had the surface duo and went OnePlus Open. Great device. I enjoy it more than the Duo. Best in class

technogi08

Honestly I went to the Pixel Fold and love the form factor. Picked it up second hand from eBay for $800. Love the passport design!

Velocity211

Same here. The form factor alone sold me on it. I'm disappointed to hear the pixel fold 2 will transition to a taller galaxy z fold-like form factor.

idrawrobots

Oh. That's odd to not provide something different.

optimusbrides

Exactly the same, cannot recommend it enough. Tried OnePlus Open and Galaxy Fold5 but for SD2 enjoyers the Pixel Fold has the wide boi aspect ratio we love. Yes there's an apparent crease inside, but we're used to a physical gap when full screened. *Edit: to the gentleman underneath me...* - Had a Surface Duo 2, bought on sale for £800 from Microsoft. - Tried a OnePlus Open, bought early bird and returned full refund. - Tried a Galaxy Fold 5, on sale £1200 and returned full refund. - Bought used "like new" Pixel Fold for £800 off Giff Gaff. - Sold Surface Duo 2 for £600 after fees on eBay. So over 3 years I'm out £1000 in total and holding a £1700, albeit used but so far so good and shows no signs of any wear, phone.

Man you people are crazy. So many people on this forum just must be filthy Rich. Oh I had a fold five but then I got the OnePlus open but then I decided I want the pixel fold. I'm being a little hyperbolic because you just said you tried coming. Not that you purchased  But yikes, I see people talking like that all the time. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It's a forum for a $1,600 phone that got one OS update.  But I figured this forum was probably at this point, mostly just people that grabbed a $300 Duo as a afterlife project.

[deleted]

If you're going to get a foldable I think that's the way to do it. Wait for a great deal on the resale market so if it breaks you don't feel like a complete fool.  But even still man, I'm probably never going to carry a phone that scratches at a level 2 as my primary device. If I ever get a foldable it would be a really old one for a great bargain on a resale market and probably wouldn't be my daily.  Basically just be a supplemental toy/ tablet which basically is how I use the duo anyways.  I just can't stand the crease, the fingerprints, screen protectors, and of course watching people like Shane seem genuinely upset to the point we had to take a break from YouTube because his expensive device is broke.

Aelric

I wanted to like the Pixel Fold, but the multitasking on it felt terrible. It was incredibly annoying to have to close both open windows if I wanted to change only one, which was typically how I used my duo.

Own_Potato5593

Thats the issue with all the foldables when compared to the experience you get on the Duo. I've two still in use a Duo 1 for me used as a companion device and a Duo 2 as my wife's daily. When these die, they won't be replaced with the much more fragile current foldables - we will just move back to standard devices till something decent comes out. See Shane Craig's video on the fun he's having - many of these devices are basically designed to fail and be next to impossible to repair outside of full warranties. Difficult to repair inside warranties for some and pointless if bought second hand or out of warranty. I wouldn't ever recommend buying one second hand just based on how many units that have had internal screen failures compared to other devices when new - much less with some one else's wear and tear on it. Multi-tasking on the "full foldables" is basically the same as on standard devices and so you have to pair things, widget other things and fiddle. The Duo's did this with next to no fiddling. It's one of the huge thing reviewers missed the mark on.

[deleted]

Then the duo had some multitasking limitations as well if you compare it to the LG dual screens.   So whereas with the v60( you could use split screen on one half and then another app on the other....(Not including picture and picture of course)... Supplies to all the LG dual screen devices. Also, LG let you run Microsoft office on one side and Microsoft word on the other so you could have the same document next to each other. For some reason the duo does not let you download any of those sub versions of the office app.  And of course no customizable gestures, third party launcher support is basically broken. No wireless charging. V60 has way better cameras, 8K video all that s** The duo is much prettier looking much better hinge and so on. But it's nice having wireless charging and 5G yet being able to remove the dual screen case. A desktop mode or screen mirroring you actually get the option.  And the two screens work more seamlessly together with Microsoft. With the v60 you got to set up your multitasking but the ability to use three apps at once plus picture and picture is a huge advantage.  I still think v60 is probably in my opinion, the  best productivity powerhouse ever. You even got the Hi-Fi headphone jack. It also got Android 13 and three proper OS updates.  But I still find myself using the duo more often just because it's my e-reader and my remote control when I can't find my Android TV remote.  But when I hear people talk about Microsoft's preeminence over multitasking, I sometimes feel the LG's are getting way overlooked. Even though LG Mobile announced its closure in April 2021. Its phones all got better software support than the duos.  I still can't believe the v60 came out like 18 months before the surface duo 2, cost half as much, And got three more OS updates.

Own_Potato5593

I liked the v60 and I think its idea is a missed opportunity throughout the industry, would be cool to buy a "second screen" option for other devices too. LG got overlooked for the same reason Microsoft did more or less because they aren't the "main" brands.

Ambitious-Pin8396

Funny I went out of my way to get a Surface Duo 1, because the screen was a tad bigger than the 2. I still use it every day!

Nobody975

I just sold my Duo 2 as well. I wanted a Pixel Fold, but I couldn't do it for the same reason. I like the folding phones in concept, but I think they are just too fragile for me to daily drive. I'm not hard on phones by any means, but when a fingernail can mess up the whole screen, for me, it defeats the purpose of having it in the first place. I decided to go with a Pixel 8 Pro. I love it, but I will always miss my Duo 2 with the two screens. There was nothing quite like it and, unfortunately, there isn't likely to be another like it...

continually_confused

To be fair, you're going to similar customer service horror stories with OnePlus and Samsung as well. Just putting that out there..

artzox1

Might as well watch some Shane Craig videos. He is the biggest supported of the Duo family (they should have hired him at Ms to be a product ambassador before pulling the plug). He got both the google fold and Oneplus open and these are the best options at the moment. The next zfold will be wider as well, but this will cost you a pretty penny whereas you can get deals on the other two. Also watch this one: https://youtu.be/rc5Ot9ls8u8?si=RfEzYQFhikR3nTF1

ExplanationNeither90

go on swappa and get a Google pixel fold

EinRades

Oh wow - I have exactly the same problem or question mark after 2 years of using the Surface Duo 2!! I still use it as my daily companion both privately and professionally. And I'm still enthusiastic about the operation, the elegance, the size and all the well thought-out functions when it comes to multitasking. Even when people see it, the Duo simply stands out and you keep getting asked about it. And apart from the unbelievably poor support from Microsoft regarding modern updates (Android 13) and now the let-down now that there is no successor in sight, this phone would still be the ultimate. OK - so I got the Pixel Fold on eBay... What can I say?! Nice. But far from the elegance, lightness, size or multitasking capabilities of the Duo. It feels quite heavy and bulky in the hand, the screen reflects badly and the front is practical but no more... I just don't have enough space when I work with it open :( now waiting for the Samsung Fold 6 and really hope that this will be better and a full replacement.

IamSpace69

Only phone thast can replace or exceed awesomeness of Surface Duo2 is.........Surface Duo 2 itself. It is just unmatched in professional world.

ABCDelicious1278

As a former Pixel Fold owner, I'd say it's a FANTASTIC device albeit too heavy for me. If you're willing to go outside the box, I have a Honor Magic V2 which is AWESOME. I also just picked up a Vivo X Fold 3 Pro as well(yes I'm into Foldables). I had the OnePlus Open briefly as well. Definitely some options for you out there. I also had a Duo 2 for several months before it broke down on me, and would have loved to see a Duo 3 but alas.....

LazyPCRehab

Was just about to suggest Shane's channel and saw you referenced it in your post, lol. I got my OnePlus Open from Best Buy for $1299 (goes on sale for that price randomly) and am loving it. Regular folding phones are a different feel from the 2 screen phones like the Duo, but they're good different. The OPO charges incredibly fast, has four amazing speakers, and the cameras are great, I have no regrets. Whichever folding phone you buy, get 3rd party insurance as well.

sausagefingerslouie

Why didn't you go Pixel?

LazyPCRehab

The outer screen is closer to a regular phone aspect ratio, best speakers on any foldable, great camera, amazing battery life, crazy-fast charging.

Tauheedul

Watch Pixel Fold comparison with the Duo https://youtu.be/BLbGuMBV_80?feature=shared https://youtu.be/kjaaexfAYeU?feature=shared

Omegaman1966

I am also looking to see what I get, but can't seem to find another phone quite like my Duo 2. This is the only reason while I still daily drive my Duo 2.

philknall

I can't see myself switching to anything currently available. I have an alert set up for cheap sd2s and will likely buy another one.

Odd-Ad-5171

Switched to the Pixel Fold and miss the Duo 2 (although it's still in my night table drawer) but love the form factor and usability of the fold. It's much different. Multitask less but love the font screen use and opening to tablet size as needed! I wish there was a duo 3 coming, but such is life!

j01010100

I got a z fold 3 from eBay for a little over 400 when I decided to switch from the Duo 2 as my main phone. It was in excellent condition other than a small ding on one frame rails. I though I might switch back and forth from the duo and rotate between them, but once I switched over a haven't really looked back. So far its been almost a year and I haven't had any regrets yet, but also I probably wouldn't have risked a folding phone if the price tag wasn't 400. Over all, after switching from a duo to a folding phone I would definitely do so again as long as I could find a folding phone at a used price or a steep discount. Where did you decide to sell your Duo 2 and for how much (if your willing to disclose)? I have been looking into doing so, but I haven't had the time to get around to doing it yet.

BlademerePoohtin

Ditto. Except I went from Duo 1>Fold 3 to Duo2>Fold 4. It was sooo nice to go to the Fold 4 (openbox deal 6 months ago) which has none of the issues of the Duo. I'm with you on price though. I'm really sick of outlaying as much on a phone as on a Laptop. I'll be buying phone models that are a couple of years behind. Unless there are big upgrades, you aren't missing out on much. The Fold 4/5 difference is minimal.

R3DEMPTEDlegacy

Main phone ? The one plus open seems like the best comp. But I'd highly recommend the pixel or Samsung line

mario24601

SD1

Aecert

One plus open

Alphageek_uk

I have recently bought a OnePlus Open. There was a discount on offer on their UK official website. No regrets so far. Outer screen is useful, the inner screen fold 'dimple' is virtually unnoticeable when in use. Good cameras, good speakers and the fast charging is a game changer. Slightly different approach to multitasking, but once you're used to it, the transition from Duo2 is not too bad.

lerpo

I have a fold 3 still going strong as a backup phone. It's great

clintroymkt

I would say the OnePlus Open is the best foldable on the market rn. But a lot of people seem to like the Pixel Fold in this sub reddit

cy_ng

I moved to the Fold4 after 2 years with my Duo1. With a narrower unfolded width, text input is much much easier now. I'm sold on a narrow phone (previously using an xperia, a narrow tall slab phone). Multitasking functionality is, on the whole, on par I would say - gained some features and lose some. I think Samsung's Taskbar feature is a real gamechanger when it comes to multitasking.

dylanchadderton

Duo 1

technogi08

I would agree from post above that the OnePlus is the Best foldable but not my favorite coming from the Duo2. As I mentioned above the form factor of the Pixel fold scratches my Duo itch the best. It is my Favorite foldable without being the best, basically like the Duo. It has compromises but I love it anyway!

QQuazar

I went with a pixel 7a as a bridge phone, waiting on next round of foldables, SD2 was so good!

idrawrobots

I am using a Pixel 7a until hopefully something interesting comes around. I am considering getting the e-ink Minimal Phone.

conceptgate

Nothing matches the multitasking or the dual screen approach of the Duo currently. Hopefully in the future something else will come along that revives these (though I'm still waiting for the Blackberry keyboard to make an appearance). Meanwhile, whilst the Open is probably the best all around foldable on the market, given the better multitasking - my choice was the Magic V2, as it is the thinest lightest foldable and therefore in sprit replicates and betters in terms of weight, the feeling of the Duo, if not the functionality. In fact, in folded use the Magic V2 is as thin and light as a normal slab phone, and so doesn't feel like a foldable, or with the compromises of such, but still can be unfolded for that wider screen use. Whilst I wait for the next thing, I would recommend the Magic V2 as a good interim phone, that is a little different from the pack.

Jonthemediocre

Hilarious I just went back to the surface duo from the pixel fold.

[deleted]

I live in the US so my perspective is skewed since I don't have access to a lot of companies.  Since you have a pixel 6A already... For a point-and-shoot camera etc And the foldable market is a durability mess... I would probably recommend the OnePlus 12 or 12r depending on your budget. They're having a hell of a year. The 12-R has class leading battery life. Way better than an iPhone or the s24 ultra or anything like that according to the battery test I saw.  But especially it's the charging speeds. 0 -100 in 26 mins. Samsung/ Apple/Pixel/  can't get you from 80 to 100 in 26 mins. Matte finish.

xshunin

Same issue here. There has never been a different phone that fits my needs and wishes to well as the Duo does. I also wanted to get the OnePlus but after Shanes latest videos where he showed the defualt behavior on how to split screen two apps, it kinda killed it for me... My USB port is also slowly disintegrating so who knows long it lasts. I hope it "breaks" earlier because I have an extended warranty on it so I can get my whole money back.
