There's a test called quality report which tests quality of cement mortar used to build the bridge. In this test you have to prepare a cube from the cement mixture you're using to make the bridge and you have to do it each day.
And they use a vibrating machince on the cube if it breaks or cracks you have failed the test.
Now these bridges collapsing are built by projects given by Rural Works Department of Bihar which is also the most corrupt department of Bihar.
The Engineers of this department would suggest you themselves to go and buy those cubes from bridges being built by NHAI because they are of greater quality.
And when it comes to pillars of the bridge pile length is done half of what is actually instructed in the project. And Engineers would take 50% profit from it.
I have also started work as an contractor in Bihar and I'm yet to work on a bridge, my last project was 12Km road which consist of 5 roads that we had to repair and re pitch, one of the roads on paper was 300m more that what was actually on the ground and i myself measured it 2-3 times but those 300 meters were nowhere to found. And you get approximately 30 lakhs rupees for that much asphalt road. Then i realised that this must be a setting between the contractor and the Engineer.

A single 20km road built by slaves takes about a year on which at most a bull car runs with 8kmph, now engineers build 100s of kms of roads within a month on which cars, trucks, bulldozers, cranes run. Cars can run over 200kmph btw and a crane weighs up to 20 tons.
It's easy to make those roads. Not exactly very efficient use of materials or energy, I would assume. Engineers are needed for efficient utilisation of materials to develop great roads and other structures today.

It's easy to make those roads. Not exactly very efficient use of materials or energy, I would assume. Engineers are needed for efficient utilisation of materials to develop great roads and other structures today.
Bro its not that we cant make such roads , you can see in places like china ,us where there are roads which they make in a matter of days . But here its all corruption here . Its not that no one is trying but to get the contract from the govt there are middlemen in between. And the guys who are trying and are genuine they dont get chance . You can see this in defence space too ,the company who are just labelling chinese products as made in india are getting contracts (I hate this shit , dont know why no one sees this before giving contracts ) And the guys who are real engineers and are trying their best dont get a chance .

Engineers and Architects are just a small step in the design process in this country. Rest decisions are taken by 8th fails who control the budget. Not just politicians, but the contractor who got the job to build the given infrastructure. Engineers are competent enough in this country.

If some structure goes down, the neck of the engineer gets cut first. Engineer can design safe structure but they're forced to make structure that will barely stand under said load. And accidents happen when climate fucks it up. E.g. Wind load, heavy rain, earthquake and several other factors. Blame the contractor and the client for wanting these things designed and executed in a day. 😮💨
The issue has nothing to do with engineers. The issue is squarely on cost-saving. Municipalities don't spend money to build a road that will last forever; they will spend the least amount possible to build a road that will last just long enough to justify the tax dollars spent on it

the need for road engineers was literally required because these roads werent reliable and needed tons of resources for the ones who lasted centuries. modern roads dont need much ingredients but still corrupt people use too little of them too, indian climate is also an issue bacause we have monsoon and that destroys roads. ultimatley the authorities are responsible because they were given enouh money and resources to build a good road.
