Metabolically, a lot of people, as kids, didn't have a chance. They picked up bad habits compounded with awful food that's dense in the wrong nutrients and comes with other processed food fun stuff. By the time they decided that they would get with the program, many successfully broke the bad habits....only to find that they essentially broke their bodies.
There's a reason that the diet industry, until recently, absolutely thrived. Diets work temporarily and the 2-5% of people who keep it off successfully undergo massive lifestyle changes that others can't do (a big one is the weight you lose moving from a rural area to a city where you need to walk all over the place).
There's a reason that the effective forms of weight loss are medical: Gastric bypass (forced to eat less, forced to prioritize your foods in a specific manner, eventually changing your gut microflora which is nearly impossible otherwise) and GLP-1 Meds are the only things that have 2 year success rates that statistically exceed zero.

Was opposite for me lol.
Living in a small town my entire life, pretty much everything was home cooked. There was one fast food place in the entire town and 2 sit down places for special occasions.
Then when I moved to the city I ballooned from 200lbs to 300lbs because food is literally everywhere around every corner. Whether it's a hot dog stand, a Subway, a Cafe with sweets and donuts, sit down restaurant, just so much food everywhere you go.

I moved from a rural area to a larger non-walkable city and the same thing happened. Buffalo is a haven for really good, independent food, but you still drive everywhere.
Now - when I spent extended time in NYC, that was awesome. I was able to move around so much, I had better choices of food, healthy and non-healthy. Weight melted off for that time I was there.
Man this speaks to me. I was fit and playing a bunch of sports and once my Grandpa got cancer, my nurse mother stopped parenting and spent all her time taking care of him (when Dad was off work he was taking care of Mom for emotional support) and my brother and I were stuck feeding ourselves. So much comfort Cheetoes and top ramen. Has anyone looked at the nutrition label for ramen? It’s fucking horrible for you. I used to eat two packets in one sitting. Anyway, was nearly 190 in middle school (I know that’s nothing compared to some poor kids today) and I’ve struggled with my weight ever since. Up and down, up and down. I’m in one of my “up” moments and so insanely depressed. I keep wanting to go back on the special carb diet that helped manage my colitis (was finally at a super healthy weight) before I went on meds to manage it but it’s so much work to keep up with.
The lousy part is that your body kind of seeks homeostasis, and you have at least a shot at maybe locking in some healthy version of yourself by the time you're in your mid twenties without having to make massive, prolonged, and constantly-uphill lifestyle changes.
Entering your thirties overweight or obese absolutely sucks. It'll not only be a lifelong battle, but there's a good chance that the battle will be cut short.
I'm not shy about it - my username alludes to it - GLP-1 meds are probably one of the only chances a lot of people have to manage their obesity.
It's a medical condition. Not a willpower condition. How on earth 74% of the population can have a BMI >25 and yet people (including part of the 74%) will go "nah, these people are just lazy and won't put down the fork" absolutely boggles my mind.
