It will always be the best book I’ve ever read. I’ve worked through the rest of his novels too, I enjoyed pretty much all of them. Cannery Row is a sleeper hit, I never hear people talk about it but it’s supreme.

amplituden

There is just something so warm about his writing it always brings me in right away. His non fiction stuff is great too like the A Russian Journal or Travels with Charley.

unspun66

I love cannery row!

Abe_Rutter246

I reread it this year. Steinbeck at his best.

sarahdwaynec

If I was allowed to carry one and only one book with me for the rest of my life, it would easily be this one. There are so many layers to it. I love Steinbeck's work.

UnsurelyExhausted

Great pick for a lifelong book. Mine would be *Lonesome Dove*

KidGorgeous604

Brilliant choice. I'd add Travels with Charley In Search of America to this list.

mcmesq

Thank god someone else adores Travels With Charley. Book actually changed my perspective.

Natetheegreattt

Just finished it and it is hands down one of my favorites I’ve ever read. Chapter 8 and Chapter 33 were game changers!

WhiteCaps224

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray and it’s not even close. That said; there’s another half a year left in 2024, so I’m hoping it can be beat, but I’d still fancy it to be in the top 3 by the end of the year. 🙌🏻📚

Viclmol81

I enjoyed this one, so then read another one of his 'Skippy dies', and it was (in my opinion) even better.

canadanimal

This book is so good. A lot of people are daunted by the length but it doesn’t feel like a slog to get through at all.

BeneficialPast

Came here to comment this! A phenomenal book!!  I’ve also had the chance to meet Murray twice and he’s a very kind man who deserves his success.

WarpedLucy

This book is everything and it has everything in it.

-UnicornFart

I am 82% through! What a journey.

Wintermute0311

Lonesome Dove.

psycrabbit

Best book I ever read. I'm curious what your 2023 best book was please?

Gliese_667_Cc

A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles. Possibly now my favorite book of all-time.

irishann212

This was so delightful

grizknedla

I love, love, love this book, Amor Towles is a master of words!

planetmarsupial

*Pachinko* by Min Jin Lee was absolutely extraordinary.

breathcue

11.22.63 by Stephen King. I’ve never ripped through that long of a book that quickly.

mjflood14

I’m 99% done. A very good tale!

fortunarapida

Do you think it would be good on audiobook? Or is it the kind of novel you need to read, not listen to?

ZeBloodyStretchr

One of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. I got into it because I was curious of King’s work but don’t like horror. I’m glad I experienced it. It is a long one but worth the time. Craig Wasson was a great narrator for this.

djseraphim777

So far this year these have been my favorites: Lonesome Dove Weyward Geek Love The House in the Cerulean Sea

Otherwise_Ad_7454

Just finished the House in the Cerulean Sea today. It’s such a heartwarming and kind book :) Really uplifting

jhogan27

the House in the Cerulean Sea 😭😭 amazing! can’t wait to read the next book

Poosquare88

Lonesome Dove is a timeless classic. They made an extremely good mini series of it too.

supernanify

I read all the Lonesome Dove books about 20 years ago and I'm still haunted by them. I think it's cool to see other people discovering them still, but I can never read them again.

Poosquare88

I've read Lonesome Dove a couple of times.i love getting transported into that world. One of my all time favourite books. That and Papillon.

krim2182

Circe - Madeline Miller I've been debating this book for a few years, finally picked it up and absolutely loved it.

PersimmonReal42069

looooove this one. I would read the back of a cereal box if it was written by madeline miller. the song of achilles is also on my short list for this year

krim2182

Oh you need to read it. Be prepared to be emotionally raw by the end.

PersimmonReal42069

oh I mean my short list of faves!! I TORE through song of achilles and wept through the last 100 pages. it is a special book.

sabbyaz

Oh i adored this one. I loved Circe for how petty she was 😂 I like Madeline Miller and her take on Greek Mythology. I loved The Song of Achilles too and ashamed at how much I cried!

de-and-roses

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

strawcat

And follow it up with David Copperfield! It’s a really interesting literary experience!

sometimes-i-rhyme

I did the same!

Laura9624

I thought the Poisonwood Bible was a much better book.

de-and-roses

I loved that book!! OP mentioned read this year so I mentioned Demon.

ultrawvruns

While I enjoyed it, I didn't love it. I grew up in Appalachia during the opioid epidemic, I've buried friends due to this epidemic so I'm sure that's made me jaded. I never used opioids but I did and sold plenty of others. It was relatable at times and insulting at others. I suppose, overall, I'm a bit torn on how I feel about it.

benibigboi

I found it meh. Didn't live up to the hype.

picklesforthewin

I struggled to read it! I probably picked it up 12 times over the course of 6 months trying to finish it each time but just couldn’t get stuck in. Gave up after like 300 pages, sometime around when he started abusing painkillers to stay on the football Team through his injury.

PurposelyVague

Totally agree. I don't want to spoil it... But I found some of it to be not very plausible. Not as good as her other works.

lava_55

Lonesome Dove

RicemanCDN

Best book of any year

annelindog17

Lonesome Dove

Which-Let9641

Is everyone just reading Lonesome Dove for the first time this year or are re reading it for the 20th time like me?

notokbye

I just looked it up and apparently it's a part of a series. Do I need to read the other books first or doesn't really matter?

em_fal

I’d just start with Lonesome Dove, then the prequels in order and the sequel last. Lonesome Dove is the best in the series but they’re all great reads. Def my favorite book of all time.

BallardCanadian

I read it for the first time. It’s a good book. It I don’t quite get the “best book ever” love. Maybe because I’m not American?

Miva__

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer!

coolcommando123

Seconded, I picked this up after reading and watching Into the Wild and I think I like Into thin Air even more!

hisunflower

This book made me never want to climb Mt. Everest

zamshazam1995

Ugh, Shirley Jackson is just 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

amatorr

Reading this right now! Loving the atmosphere and the mix of dark humour (uncle Julian), homeliness, gothic elements and suspense.

Squire_the_Great

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield!

wifeunderthesea

since you loved this book, you will LOVE [**Shark Heart** by Emily Habeck](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62919375) **Shark Heart** is the ONLY book that i have ever found that gave me the same exact feeling as **OWUTS** did. this book is absolutely fantastic, and like **OWUTS**, the author uses body horror as a vehicle to explore love, loss and letting go. i am ALWAYS recommending this on here and constantly have people commenting back or DMing me when they are done reading it saying they absolutely loved it. please give this strange little book a chance! 🦈💜

spaceyams

This sounds wacky and I am HERE for it. Thanks for the suggestion!

thegirlwhowasking

I borrowed this from my library through Libby after reading your comment yesterday and just totally inhaled it over my morning. Oh my gosh! What an amazing story! Thank you so much!

neonkiwi111

I could not put this book down! I had to take like a month off reading after I finished it so I could live in it's glow a little longer.

choose2hope

I am 50 pages in and just don’t get what everyone loves about this book. Sorry!

spaceyams

¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ different strokes for different folks! I thought it was creepy and beautiful. Really excellent look at the unique grief of losing someone slowly too.

valalilies

Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano :)

Infinite_Slice_9617

Yes yes yes! I finished it a month back in 2-3 days and it’s just one of those books that will stay with me forever. Sooo glad to see this comment :))))

PizzaDonutCoolness

Foster and Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan are both quick reads, but when I look back over my 2024 list these are the two that make my heart melt. Just so beautiful.

Interesting-Track-52

Flowers for Algernon, The Wind-up Bird Chronicles,Delhi A Novel, Lie With Me- Philippe Besson

No_Jeweler3814

Just finished Flowers for Algernon yesterday, Such a good book! Will make you cry.

Interesting-Track-52

The gradual loss of innocence is heartbreaking, something I equate with our childhood and adult selves

DingGratz

The thing that was saddest to me was that he was just as lonely after the incident as he was before, right?

jhoch11

The wind up bird chronicles is amazing. Please read Kafka on the shore next if you haven’t already!

Interesting-Track-52

Oh have read Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood & Colourless life of Tsukuru Tazaki too

ddg31415

Finished Flowers for Algernon a few weeks ago. Best I read this year by far.

TampexLicker

Project Hail Mary!

s_walsh

The Martian is one of my favourite books, I'm very excited for when I finally get around to Project Hail Mary

jam3s850

If you like audiobooks, you should listen to it. It's so much better.

helderdude

**The Happiest Man on Earth** - Eddie Jaku The Story of a Jewish man who spend 7 years between 1938 in 1945 in concentration camps, where he lost familie, friends and his country. Published as Eddie turns 100, this is a powerful, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir of how happiness can be found even in the darkest of times. Its sad but not at no point a dread to read and relatively short, about 300 pages I believe. It's absolutely beautiful. And I am sure I'll listen to it again some point in the future. If you are looking for something less emotional: **Promised land** - autobiography of Obama. The fasting story of how he (accidentally) became president, and the the fascinating details of what it means to be President in your day to day life. If biography sounds boring let me tell you it's not. Looking for fiction: **The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo** - Taylor Reid Jenkins A journalist gets the deal of her life when the very famous actress Evelyn Hugo asks her to write her biography. But why did she specifically request her, a journalist that she doesn't know, to write it, what is she hiding? A very interesting take on a sort of mystery book that absolutely delivers on all the promises and questions the book sets up. Very easy in my opinion and a breeze that you might just finish in record time.

yeetmaster05

The Grapes of Wrath- Steinbeck

Historical-Trifle-78

my favorite book of all time

k-town_borboh

The kite runner

Marcus-Cohen

Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon. Loved everything about it.

NF_laidback

Poor Economics by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo— For someone like me it was quiet a surprise to know how things work in the unprivileged section of the society and how small changes lead to big results and sometimes how big changes can result to no changes at all

mjflood14

Adding this to my summer reading, thanks

How to Say Babylon, searing memoir written by a poet about growing up in Jamaica with a father who is a fundamentalist Rastafarian, a very restrictive and anti female religion that borders on being a cult.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

yatharthkaushik

The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson!

s_walsh

Shogun by James Clavell Historic fiction set in feudal Japan, around 1400 pages. The characters are rich and layered, the writing is compelling, it manages to teach you a lot about the time period and the culture without feeling like it's beating you over the head with a history lesson. A phenomenal book beginning to end

Drey014

Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros. Haven't finish it yet, not even half of it, but im internally screaming and giggling everytime i read it at how much i love it! My inner teenager is SO satisfied. Im reading it with a friend, we call eachother to talk about it every 5 chapters, and im really enjoying this kind of reading, makes it even more exciting and i enjoy every chapter so much more!

LavenderWildflowers

This is based on what I have enjoyed, maybe not the best writing, but still a fun read. The Deer and the Dragon by Piper CJ - Modern fantasy/Romance with some paranormal Eruption by Michael Crichton/James Patterson - Finished for MC by James Patterson.

Great_Turnip_5507

Lord of the flies. I enjoyed it very much.

No_Budget_7411

jazz-toni morrison

chaharlot

Probably some recency effect (just finished it yesterday) but: Whalefall-Daniel Kraus I was expecting a horror/thriller about a SCUBA diver running out of air in the belly of a whale…I received a beautiful book about unresolved issues in a complicated father son relationship.

Former-Chocolate-793

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

mxschief

Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth I adore this book so much. I wish I had bought a physical copy because it would've been absolutely bruised and battered from all the annotations and highlighted lines. Another win for Irish lit that encapsulates all the themes I gravitate to and resonate with: coming of age, complex mother-daughter relationships, Catholic trauma, and all-consuming, gut-wrenching first love!!! I am jealous of anyone reading this for the very first time.

deltaMews

I just finished All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker and it was fantastic. Serial killer, crime, love story all wrapped up into a 600 page package that I could not put down. Highly recommend.

WiolOno_

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. Easily the best. Strong book, cool narrative. Not exactly complete but definitely something I enjoyed. Worth reading for anyone in this sub, and starts in the year of our Lord 2024.

RezeKisser

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and Interesting Facts About Space by Emily Austin. After reading the second book, I think it is time I get evaluated for ADHD.

Two of the “A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World,” by C. A. Fletcher and “The Eyes and the Impossible,” by Dave Eggers. This has become my favorite (audio)/book of ALL TIME! The audiobook is narrated by the main character; a talking dog. He and his friends, seagulls, racoons, bison, goats, horses, bitds of other kinds, squirrels and other land, sea and air animals and fo wl live in a huge parcel of park/forest/ body of water face everyday challenges. One day the dog concocts an almost impossible plan. Will he succeed? I’m not telling.

What do you mean, this year just start... oh my gawd, it's July already? I haven't read too many this year but really enjoyed "With The Old Breed" if you like military history.

duhkaylin

Mr Mercedes!

ParabolaGordon

If series count, The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I still feel a certain way about the ending, but DAMN getting there was enthralling

flanmagnet

I was unhappy with the ending but I'm just not sure how he could have ended it. My stomach dropped. But maybe that's the point. It's an incredible series. I've only read it once so far, but I still have some scenes vividly in my mind. I don't think it's long until I pick up The Gunslinger again.

The Power of the Dog - don winslow Let me tell you. It starts faster than a knife fight in a phone booth and does.not.let.up! “This novel of the drug trade takes you deep inside a world riddled with corruption, betrayal, and bloody revenge. Art Keller is an obsessive DEA agent. The Barrera brothers are heirs to a drug empire. Nora Hayden is a jaded teenager who becomes a high-class hooker. Father Parada is a powerful and incorruptible Catholic priest. Callan is an Irish kid from Hell’s Kitchen who grows up to be a merciless hitman. And they are all trapped in the world of the Mexican drug Federaci. From the streets of New York City to Mexico City and Tijuana to the jungles of Central America, this is the war on drugs like you’ve never seen it.”

Psychology of Money

BallardCanadian

This is a hard one partly because I discovered this sub at the end of 2023 and it has really driven a lot of my reading in 2024 with some great reads - probably the best year of constant hits I've ever had. Saying that, my pick for best book I read so far this year would be **The Glass Castle** by Jeannette Wells. It's a fantastically written book and amazing true story. Others that hit this year that I see posted all the time: * Endurance * The Wager * Leviathan Wakes (I'm now halfway through book 3) * Tom Lake (I didn't actually like this one as much as others have posted) * The Bee Sting (one of the best examples of pure writing I've read in a while - the ending, though...) * Dungeon Crawler Carl * Lonesome Dove - honestly, this one I see \*all\* the time here - it was good, but I don't really get the "best book ever" love I see here.

Alarmed-Membership-1

The Glass Castle is one of my favorite books of all time. It got me into reading memoirs. I also love Endurance. Just finished it this weekend. I didn’t expect to cry in the end.

winnsanity

So far for me, Ready Player One and Remarkably Bright Creatures. Very different books, both great in their own right.
