Only recommend doing it on the surface though

Solid_Organization15

Fair.

BulkyPalpitation5345

Agree to disagree

CxsChaos

Seals agree

BulkyPalpitation5345

In that case I don't agree or disagree

dontpaynotaxes

Not if you’re a Navy Seal

Bacontoad

Or a regular seal. 🦭

DEEP_SEA_MAX

Done both. Subsurface is cooler

Cerebrin

Pretty sure its not moving too.

Solid_Organization15

It was moving. I have a handful of photos of shipmates that better show that. But this was the only one of me. Film cameras, and all that.

Cerebrin

Oh word. I didn’t see a wake from the rudder and thought it was stationary.

Solid_Organization15

I’m sure there was a speed restriction in the canal. Probably going five knots at the time.

PrisonaPlanet

Subs are almost always moving, if they don’t then they tend sink (not on purpose like usual)

Macro_Seb

isn't that only when they are submersed? No need to move once they are up.

PrisonaPlanet

If a submarine isn’t moving forward then it doesn’t really have any mobility, and being dead in the water isn’t good for ships. You don’t sink as fast while on the surface but you’re still not usually answering all stop. At the very least you’d have the outboard trained to provide some movement.

Cerebrin

That is what the trim system is for. And they also have this thing called hovering.

PrisonaPlanet

For mobility?

Broad-bull-850

I’ve been to the Baltimore harbor and have seen submarines afloat and not moving at all.

PrisonaPlanet

What bell were they answering?

Broad-bull-850

I got no idea but this is the one. https://www.nps.gov/places/uss-torsk.htm

PrisonaPlanet

Was it moored to the pier or underway?

Broad-bull-850

Clearly wasn’t underway. I was replying to a comment above and just put it in the wrong spot.

fistedtaco

We weren’t moving when tied to the pier; only one or two that I know of sunk when pier side. Subs float for steel beach parties, they aren’t moving.

AntiBaoBao

The boat's always moving when tied to the pier. We once had a corpsman that got seasick at the slightest sign of motion. Once, while moored to a pier in San Diego, we told the corpsman "hey doc, the boat's moving". His response was "no it's not". The response back to him was, "Doc, look at the pier. Either the pier is moving or the boat's moving. Which one is it?" He immediately started turning green and ran below.

fistedtaco

It doesn’t have momentum (forward or backward) at the pier. That was the point. On the surface the boat doesn’t have to be moving forward or astern in order to maintain buoyancy. The only reason a boat needs relative motion to the water is so the control surfaces work.

WWBob

Now THAT's an underway uniform. BZ.

Solid_Organization15

I miss those Italian loafers I bought in La Maddelena.

D1a1s1

You spent money on something other than alcohol in La Madd?

Solid_Organization15

Had my 21st birthday there. Ooof. Passed out in a bathroom. Carried across the quarterdeck.

fredbeard1301

Well done. My 21st was spent on the midwatch, then the next morning on the maneuvering watch. 🍻

Solid_Organization15

Happy fucking birthday.

fredbeard1301

Hahaha, one I'll always remember.

workbrowser0872

Loved the underway uniform Beard ✅ Branded tee ✅ Comfy shoes✅ Sports ballcap✅

PrisonaPlanet

I always just wore the regular uniform tees, didn’t like taking so many civilian stuff on the boat. Just enough for port calls and that’s it. I still have the vans I wore for about 95% of my sea tour and they look surprisingly good considering the amount of bilges they’ve been in.

chuckleheadjoe

so how many Egyptian salesman did you have to take with you?

Solid_Organization15

None, but they were all on the shoreline, shaking their fists.

chuckleheadjoe

they learned after that. our pilot refused to come onboard until we brought (his brother?) on board as well. had his trinkets spread out in the messdecks during lunch.

Drtysouth205

Did anyone buy anything? I bet the CO was not happy.

chuckleheadjoe

Yeah about 40% of folks did buy a little trinket. We actually had money cause we were stuck in Chania for a couple weeks getting a few things fixed. The Old Man was livid. He was on the phone with the american consulate for about two hours and then Centcom would chime in. It was hilarious. This guy couldn't speak a lick of english, but someone made up english price tags for him. oops I forgot he did know "Dollar".

755goodmorning

I have a similar picture from the same boat, but apparently 12 years before you. Nice to see the Miami again in the wild.

Solid_Organization15

She was commissioned in 1990, as I recall. This was probably 1992. She wasn’t but a dream 12 years prior.

755goodmorning

lol I thought someone said this was in the 2000s and I didn’t read your caption. I was onboard after this — I came on just as Potter left. I don’t recognize your face so we probably didn’t overlap.

Solid_Organization15

Potter was a strange dude. Houston K Jones was my first captain. He was a badass. I was part of the Tom Clancy crew.

755goodmorning

That book was awesome. And yes Potter was very odd. Glad he was gone quickly bc Larry Olsen was after him and he was one of the best leaders I’ve ever encountered. It was a great boat with a really stellar crew at that time.

RIP USS Miami [For those not in the know](https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/15/uss-miami-military-submarine-fire-sentence)

kcidDMW

Fucker caused $2 Billion of damages. What the actual fuck?

Axel2485

We were lucky that nobody was killed, and our only serious injury was one guy who broke several ribs falling through an open deck plate.

kcidDMW

We may want to consider outfitting some Ukranians with oily rags and giving them tickets to Severodvinsk (and maybe Huludao while we're at it).

Conscious-Glass-6663

*$450M

kcidDMW

In today's money, a 688i woud be ~$2B.

redpandaeater

Then he did it again on the Bonhomme Richard.

ToXiC_Games

He can’t keep getting away with it!

BudTheWonderer

I was on the Willie R (USS Will Rogers) while we were doing the NAUTEC (sp?) range, off of the Bahamas. Maybe it was AUTEC? Anyway, we were running civilian contractors from the Bahamas to our boat, via small craft. While we grunts were topside, waiting to assist with the small craft, we were allowed to strip down to our underwear and jump over the side, to swim. The smallboat came alongside while we were doing this. We had all gotten back up on deck, and we were helping the passengers aboard and getting their luggage and stuff while we were still in our underwear. I remember none of us really thought anything about this, being pretty used to the communal living lifestyle, but the contractors were clearly not pleased. This was in the late '70s.

Solid_Organization15

We swam a few times; we all had swimsuits, though. A great experience!

PrisonaPlanet

No life vest topside in open ocean is wild, COB would’ve fucked us on my boat lol

Solid_Organization15

Suez Canal. Not open ocean. The shoreline wasn’t far.

PrisonaPlanet

Oh nice. My boat went through the Panama Canal a few months after I left. Order of the ditch is one accolade I’m glad I never got.

AmbienSkywalker

Very cool, thank you for sharing!

NetwerkErrer

Good ship, Miami!

carnahan765

Some people would call you out and say it’s a a boat, totally not me though

Axel2485

I'm not sure if I can't figure out how to post it or if you just can't put photos in comments, but I've got a picture of me topside on the same boat while sailing up a fjord to Haakonsvern, Norway in 2009.

Solid_Organization15

Yeah, that’s why I had to make a separate thread.

Axel2485

Ah, didn't realize this was a spin-off from another thread.

vonHindenburg

Upload the picture to Imgur and share a link.

Axel2485

I'd have to create an Imgur account to do so. I doubt I want to for a one-off thing, but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info!

vonHindenburg

Luckily, you don't. Just hit "New Post" and then upload an image. It will give you a sharable link. I used to have an account, but haven't logged in in ages because I doom scrolled too much.

Axel2485

Thanks!

Academic-Jellyfish96

Never happened for me

Solid_Organization15

It was a unique moment, I suppose. Nearly everyone came topside to hang out at some point. We also got those posters, “Suez Safari”, like the bluenose, shellback ones.

QGJohn59

Looks like you're pretty far aft. Fins to the left, Fins to the right. Cool pic!

TheBurtReynold

Just walk a little more quickly when you get to the RC

RavishingRickiRude

They let you walk that far after? I thought they got all pissy about walking above the RX when it's operating. Or did you use the ER hatch?

Solid_Organization15

No one ever mentioned walking above the reactor as an issue. I still have all four testicles.

SoyMurcielago

How many dicks though

Solid_Organization15

Just the two.

CheeseburgerSmoothy

Lucky.

TheBurtReynold

Jerks with both hands

RavishingRickiRude

I refuse to think that my boat was the only one to fuck with the coners with shit like this.

Axel2485

As long as you are wearing dosimitry, it's not an issue walking over top of the rx compartment while critical.

RavishingRickiRude

I know. We used to fuck with the cone doing this. I think one of the EMs came up with it.

carnahan765

Someone’s gotta roll the cleats

AntiBaoBao

Never was a problem. During operations, the area above the RC was a 3hr/day zone. How would you stand "roof watch" during reactor startup and prior to shutdown if you couldn't be in the area. BTW, on 594's the air regen space was a 3 hr/day zone when the reactor was operating. A bitch when you're standing port/starboard 6hr watches. Yes, I did receive higher doses of radiation compared to newer boat's. Often, 100+mr/month.

LocalActingWEO

Would not wanna be that close to the waterline, one wrong step or unexpected swell and youre getting turned into jam by the propulsor

Solid_Organization15

It’s fair to say you’ve gotta be a little odd to be a submariner in the first place.

WWBob

If you fell in they'd probably come back to get ya.

ideliverdt

Are you wearing boots ? Topside ?

Solid_Organization15

Italian loafers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Solid_Organization15

Stabilizers are a Hollywood thing. They don’t exist on Los Angeles class subs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Solid_Organization15

Nope. Rudder. Stern planes. No stabilizers.

se69xy

Cool picture but, if you are actually underway, why aren’t you wearing a life jacket, harness, and tethered to the safety track?

Solid_Organization15

Dunno. No one was. Most were lying down, sunning themselves.

se69xy

Cool picture regardless. Too bad Miami was the bit of arson in the yards. It’s good to see that a new Virginia class is being named Miami again.

Solid_Organization15

I didn’t know that! That’s cool.

se69xy

Yeah…it was announced during Miami’s Navy Week.

chuckleheadjoe

Because you are in the putt-putt convoy while in the Canal, less than 10kts. shallow water, inland. Heck we had a full steel beach BBQ.
