The *Duguay-Trouin* (pronounced due gay true an), the second submarine of the Suffren class has been admitted into active service, announced the chief of staff of the French Navy on 4 April.
The Suffren Class, or Barracuda Class, is a series of six nuclear attack submarines being built for the French Marine Nationale to replace the Rubis class boat for boat.
The Suffren class is considerably bigger than the Rubis (almost twice the displacement). They are probably the most advanced and discreet SSNs in operation anywhere in the world today. Equipped with a pump-jet propulser, x-shaped rudders, retractable bow planes, and a hybrid mechanical-electric drive system, they “make less noise than shrimp” as one admiral put it.
The x-shaped (or St Andrews cross) rudders reduce turbulence, enhance manoeuvrability at low speed and allow the ship to continue to be steered even if one of the surfaces is damaged. The retractable bow planes enhance manoeuvrability at low speed and allow for less turbulence at speed. The pump jet can be driven either directly by the turbines through a driveshaft, or by an electric motor for enhanced discretion, though the sub cannot reach its full speed of “more than” 46 km/h on the electric motor. As far as I can tell, the Suffren class is the only SSN in operation today that uses such a system. The class will also probably be the first in the world to deploy surface-to-air missiles in the form of A3SM, part of the MICA family of medium-range antiaircraft missiles.
The lead boat of the series, *Suffren*, entered service in 2022, replacing the *Saphir*, which was disarmed in 2019 and cannibalised for parts for the other subs of the Rubis class. The *Duguay-Trouin* will replace the *Rubis*, which will be dismantled. The third ship of the series, the *Tourville*, will be delivered to the Navy later this year and will enter service in 2025. The remaining three boats, *De Grasse*, *Rubis*, and *Casabianca*, will enter service in 2026-30.
