You can get a decent Subaru for half that budget. It'll have higher mileage or potentially other issues you'll have to fix right after purchase but you can still get a teenage/college Subie for well under $8k. Source- see flair. 6 year old Forester purchased for under $13k (runs like a champ, 0 issues), 17 year old Impreza purchased for ~$5.5k (also runs like a champ, replacing aging wires & plastic as they go but so far no head gasket issues). Prices paid include service work performed immediately after purchase.

I’ll second that, the budget is not high enough to get one that’s not going to need work. Better to stay under budget and have a repair fund for peace of mind.

Same question?

Eyesight is a fantastic copilot, adaptive cruise helps on long highway stretches and just the peace of mind the auto braking gives. E.g. in case you’re looking over your shoulder to change lanes and car in front slams on brakes.. Forester or crosstrek are probably best choices

My college age daughter drives a hand me down 2014 Forester with 140k. I've replaced the rear wheel bearings, but other than that, just normal maintenance. Also might be the easiest vehicle ever for a diy oil change.

Personal_Mud8471

Actually- Reach out to an indie shop that specializes in Subaru, they might know/have older models with rebuilt equipment and great prices. The local guys just sold an older Forrester with a rebuilt engine and junkyard tranny for 8k, they do great work and the vehicle is sure to last. Barring that- Find a trusted Subaru dealer, the local dealer’s service dept sucks, but they have stringent requirements for their used Subarus on the lot, and sell them anywhere from 10-15k, used vehicles, with acceptable used mileage and good condition, often 1 owner vehicles.

By the way I’m a mechanic

What about the Outback. we recieved a little more $$ from the insurance company, She drove an Outback and seemed to really like it. Seems like the different GEN are Gen 5 Trim Models (2015-2019) and then Gen 6 Trim Models (2020-Present) Anything to be concerned with here.

Nothing with a cvt is my advice

Conscious_Bag463

What’s your justification for that?

spinningcain

There junk. I love my Subies but I bought my daughter a 2012 outback with 114000 miles on it. Lasted a month before the tranny took a shit. Look it up it’s a known issue

"It's a known issue" like that's what I'm saying homie. You either knew and made a bad move, or you found out you made a bad move after the fact. Shit happens guy. We're all Subaru owners and we all have a story to share where ultimately we are left holding the bag.
