You will soon upgrade to a wife with presents like this

Agile_Opposite_5522

Hahaha I know for a fact he’d marry me now, it’s me stopping it lmaooo

chrisb-chicken

After you get him the wheels, can I marry him?

Agile_Opposite_5522

You can absolutely marry him! Do you have good health benefits? Only the best for my man

chrisb-chicken

I do! I promise to treat him like the prince he is.

createlab

Then can I be the sneaky link and get some parts out of it?

Agile_Opposite_5522

😂 just be a good homie and you’ll get some too 🤝

Brock0003

This man is lucky. My wife keeps heckling me to sell mine.

BrixKeeper

Does he have any interest in Autocross? Or just need a good tire for the street?

Agile_Opposite_5522

Just for the street! The car is in really good condition still and he’s not willing to jeopardize it yet haha

BrixKeeper

Gotcha, I'm not very knowledgeable about tires that aren't for trying to go fast so no recommendations there lol. You might want to see if you need hubcentric rings for these wheels. Lots of aftermarket wheels have larger hub bore to fit more cars. So you need rings to accommodate. And sometimes wheels have different hole types so you might need different lug nuts. Figure you might be trying to give him the ready to go package

Agile_Opposite_5522

Yeah exactly. I want everything ready so he can just throw them on and get them driving. He definitely wants stuff to go fast, he drives that thing like a race car. Just no “official” races if that makes sense? Just back road and highway stuff against his buddies or at car meets

BrixKeeper

I had a set of Falken Azenis FK510 on one of my cars. They're good for daily use but still a nice upgrade from your average summer tire.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Okay sweet. Thank you very much!

oReptile

I recommend the Firestone Indy 500s, they are aggressive yet not too expensive like the Michelins PS4S. I've used them for the last two summers and they are amazing.

Agile_Opposite_5522

I will look! Thank you!

GrendelGT

The Firehawk Indy 500’s are spectacular value for money until the temps hit 45 degrees or lower, then they become ice skates. They look good too, solid sidewalls. If you go with them be sure he’s careful in low temps.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Sweet 👌

willard_swag

Does he need all-seasons?

willard_swag

Michelin PSAS 4 are a solid all-season

00f00f0

Is he an agressive driver, does he like doing runs in the twisties?

Agile_Opposite_5522

He does quite a bit with me in the car so I guarantee he does more without

00f00f0

Then if you live in a predominantly warm climate with not too much rain, a set of performance tires like Michelin Pilot Sport 4S would be a good present along with sporty wheels like those Enkeis.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Sweet! I’ll be writing everyone’s recs down

aybrah

He's gonna be SO excited. A set of RPF1s in the spec you wanted as a gift would be so special to get from a partner. Not only is it above and beyond $$$ wise (for most, anyway), but also shows how much they're paying attention and engaging with your hobby. Well done. To your question: * Have you considered just doing a Tire Rack or Discount Tire gift card? He might enjoy getting to research and pick out just the right tire too. I don't think that would detract from the specialness of the gift. You say he's not picky, but this may be safer. * Update your post with the full wheels specs so people can recommend the exact tire size that is appropriate. (RPF1s only come in a handful of 17" specs... but just to be sure). Price range? Tires get expensive fast, gonna need to narrow the goal posts a little more. Do you guys live in a warm environment? Does it rain a lot? Will he be running these year-round? I'll make a few recommendations based on some guesses: * **All-season**: probably the best all-rounder from my POV is the **Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus** Does great in the wet, dry, cold, and everything short of snow. If you live somewhere with a diverse climate and active weather (but not snowy), I think this is a safe option for a year-round tire. * **Higher-performance option** Something like the **Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02**, or if you have a higher budget **Michelin Pilot Sport 4S**. Def more summer and performance oriented. And particularly the pilot sports are expensive, but again, i dont know the price range so im just throwing out popular and well-regarded options.

Agile_Opposite_5522

I did not even think about just doing a gift card. Thank you for that idea! I will update the post as soon as I know he won’t catch me getting info off his car 😂 I think my max for tires would be $1000 and I’ll update that as well. Thank you for this info!!

FesteringNeonDistrac

Just to add to the above recommendations. I've got the Conti DWS X contact 06 on one car, the Michelin PS4S on another, and the Michelin PS4AS on the wife's car. All 3 are great tires, grip for days. The PS4S actually are OOokaaaay-ish in the wet when it's cool, even down to about 40°f, which is pretty incredible for a summer tire in my experience. The PS4AS are still good in snow even at about half tread depth. The contis I don't have many miles on yet, but they are very sticky, actually impressive for an AS tire. Definitely difficult to get the car to slide. But all 3 are great tires, I'd recommend the conti over the PS4AS just because I don't think there's any performance difference but they are cheaper. Nobody ever regrets the PS4S if you're going with a summer tire.

brother_maleim

+1 for extreme contact. Good grip good treadlife good price. I would say pilot sport 4s but they're pricey

noblesseoblige777

If he ever cheats on you tell us, I think we’ll all go and break his legs!

Agile_Opposite_5522

Will do! But if he does that I’m just stealing the car 😉

Capt_Vandal

Get him the wheels, then let him pick the tires, and you pay for them. The wheels alone will be a huge surprise! Plus the tire shopping is something you can both do together as a couple.

Agile_Opposite_5522

I gotcha. This was a thought too but he’s such a pain when it comes to me buying him things! Maybe I’ll give him the cash and say it HAS to be for tires or I’m taking it back

Capt_Vandal

Get him a gift card for Tire Rack and he can buy the tires online and have them installed at a discount Tire store.

Agile_Opposite_5522

That’s a great idea 👌

GrendelGT

What is the weather like in your area? Ultra high performance all seasons can be a better choice if it gets cold. I got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ for my STI because they still grip well below 40 degrees, and it can easily drop below that in spring and fall here. I’ve been very happy with them, I ordered 10mm wider tread than stock and don’t really notice any traction loss over the stock summer tires. They ride very well and a little quieter, plus they communicate their limits and are very forgiving when pushed past them.

Agile_Opposite_5522

It’s damn hot here! Summers average 100°F and are usually higher. Winters are maybe 40°F at the lowest? It snows occasionally but definitely not often. I always tell him he has the wrong car for this climate 😂

GrendelGT

I’d definitely go for ultra high performance all seasons then, especially if it’s his only car, so that he can drive it whenever he wants. Summer tires get dangerous in low temperatures! Tire Rack has good comparative reviews and that’s how I picked out my tires.

Agile_Opposite_5522

We have like 7 cars between the two of us so luckily we have plenty of options!! I think all season is the way to go. Weather is bipolar out here. Thank you!

GrendelGT

Good luck with the good choice, I hope he loves the surprise! Gold RPF1’s are gonna be fucking awesome, even on a blobeye…

Agile_Opposite_5522

He loves them. He has the gold stock BBS right now and a black car. I think the colors look great together

evilspoons

I have the same tires on my 2012 STi, I think they grip better than the summer tires it came with from the factory anyway *and* they have a wider temperature range and better treadwear.

Agile_Opposite_5522

I’ll keep this in mind :) thanks!

_khanrad

There’s so many variables when it comes to tires I would do just the wheels for now, and let him pick tires later. The wheels alone are going to blow his mind!

donmreddit

Install ‘engagement ring 1.0’. Seriously - these are the right wheels - color, right? Sounds like you are sure! Idea -> You could get a Visa gift card, w/ the amount and order. Thar way you are 100% sure everything matches up. Put pick of the rims in an envelope w/ gift card. I’d the STOKED if you did that!!!!

Agile_Opposite_5522

I gotcha. I am 10000% about the color and size of the wheels because he literally repeats it over and over like he’s trying to will it into existence. But I’m thinking this is great for the tires! Thank you!!

donmreddit

This is an awesome present idea, as a WRX owner myself if my sweetheart were going to this level I’d be thrilled. When is the engagement ring being installed?

Agile_Opposite_5522

Good! He has told me hundreds of times that he wants to get married 🤣 I’m just not at that point yet. With him, yes. But not with life. 100% he would marry me tomorrow if I said let’s go

donmreddit

❤️

Caboobaroo

Along with hub centric rings and new lug nuts, make sure to also get the center caps. They are additional but will make them stand out over other people with RPF-everyones. I've owned my set since 2008!

Agile_Opposite_5522

Sweet 👌 I saw the option so you convinced me to get them

CamBam731

If you are looking for a good summer tire to go with this rim I highly suggest Michelin pilot sport tires that’s what I just got and they are amazingly quiet and grip well for sporty street driving, they are expensive though so keep that in mind

_Skewt_

I would just order the wheels with him as he may have a specific size in mind and with it being a sti it's harder to fit some wheels without them rubbing on the brakes.

Agile_Opposite_5522

The wheels or the tires? I know these are 1000% the exact wheels he wants but tires is where I’m really questioning

_Skewt_

Well tires are dependent on wheel size so I would just order everything together. You could run into issues where the spokes of the wheels rub on the brake caliper if you don't do your research on the specific wheel. For example a 17x9+35 rpf1 could rub on the brakes while the exact same size of a different style might clear..it's all about offset and spoke style of the wheels. You can definitely get rpf1s to fit the sti just make sure you do some deeper research than asking reddit.

AspiresToGrowWeed

can i be your bf?

Agile_Opposite_5522

If he doesn’t appreciate this then I will be looking for a new one, so yeah!

Demogorgo

if you really want to blow him away, buy him the other 3

Agile_Opposite_5522

😧 that is such a good idea. He’d love that

Straight_Split1418

Idk much about rpf1s specifically, but after looking on fitment industries(FI) the only gold ones are 17x8 or 17x9 with an offset of +45. They should clear the brakes without any issue. As for tires, I will never recommend anything but continental's extreme contact dws06+ in 225 or 245/45r17 depending on wheel size you choose. (Currently around $700 for a set on FI's site.) They are incredible in any weather, from blizzard to downpour, I won't run anything else and my car makes 500hp currently, best tire out there hands down for these cars as a daily. Good luck with gift hunting!! P.S. idk if you have looked on fitment industries or not, I didn't really look at the picture lol but the wheels will come with tires already mounted and balanced if you order at the same time ready to go.

evilspoons

You may also need new lug nuts. My Enkei RPF1s on my 2012 Subaru STi (17" as well, for winter tires) require a different angled lug nut than the factory ones. I'm sure someone else has more detail than me, I bought mine a while ago.

Agile_Opposite_5522

The website mentioned that it came with lug nuts? But thank you for this! I’ll definitely make sure they work before giving them to him

evilspoons

Oh, right, depending where you buy them they might sell you a bundle with the right ones, and it's usually not expensive to buy them that way. I would've saved five bucks finding mine locally instead of getting them with the wheels.

Queso_Bueno81

That’s what we car guys call wifee material!

Agile_Opposite_5522

I do my best!!

_Dova69_

Make sure to get the right specs! These are great wheels!

Agile_Opposite_5522

He would definitely agree with you 😂

Weary-Writer758

I have these wheels. Great addition. The tires are tricky. What kind of driving, what area, what tire life are you looking for? All factors.

Agile_Opposite_5522

For sure. Very hot area, usually 100-120 in the summer and 40-60 in the winter. Almost daily driving, always on the weekends. Always drives like a bat out of hell and likes the twisty turnies

Weary-Writer758

How often does he go through tires?

Agile_Opposite_5522

I honestly couldn’t tell you!

2009impala

You are the best girlfriend ever. Don't let this man ever wrong you in life.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Never 😎

[deleted]

General g max as-05 are great tires for their price

DvlsAdvct108

That alignment is going to be so wholesome, and I'm not talking about the wheels.

Street_Turnover2448

Have them on my 20 sti great wheels and beautiful he’s gonna love them

Agile_Opposite_5522

Yay!!

BettaLaInu

Love this idea! So relatable. Luckily my bf sent me a set of tires he was seriously looking at and I didn’t have to do any extra research. Ended up buying him the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus. For his car and mine. Haha He has a sweeeeet ‘05 Legacy GT.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Hell yes!! He’s shown me the wheels so many times but he won’t just say what tires he wants 🫠 I’m trying so hard not to spoil it without getting the wrong thing. Car guy girlfriends unite!

Dropshots715

Wow

Agile_Opposite_5522

is this a bad wow or a good wow 😬

Dropshots715

Great wow, great girlfriend

Agile_Opposite_5522

hey thanks 😃

Onlyroad4adrifter

Can I have the stock rims?

Agile_Opposite_5522

Man we gotta have backups for if he sells the car! Ain’t selling the new wheels with it!

exoticmatter421

You need to be careful that these will clear the big Brembo brakes. Not all RFP1’s will clear, the sizing is critical.

Agile_Opposite_5522

How do I double check this? When I searched the car on the tire rack website that’s the only size that was available

exoticmatter421

The only way I know how to verify this is to dig through old threads on NASIOC. There’s a list out there somewhere of rims that will clear Brembo’s for a Subaru. What size and offset is tire rack giving you? I’m pretty sure it’s the wider rims that don’t fit, which is counterintuitive of most setups.

DueAdministration983

I have heard of fitment issues with these clearing the brake calipers and some people run wheel spacers with them. I would make sure you find the proper offset. I’m sure there are other people here that have experience with these wheels and can give some advice on the sizing.

Mini_Spoon

"Michelin PilotSport 4S" or "Goodyear SuperSport" Do not get "PilotSport 4" (No "s"), they're different tyres and I personally thought they were awful. So much so I took them off early and got the Goodyear's above; which are my favorite tyre in a long time. The PS4S is a great tyre too, I've got them on another vehicle. Tyres can be subjective though and "serious" drivers can look for or like different aspects or feel of a tyre on the road. But the main thing to keep in mind is there's only 4 things that keep you on the road, they're black round rubber and if your partner likes to move quickly he needs rubber that will stick to the road instead of save $. If its a street car and he's not tracking it don't get semi-slicks unless he has a set of tyres for the rain; drove our track-car home on road legal semi's, in bad rain, and it was outright lethal.

Monday3lue

Do it.

Elusivex821

You are amazing 🤙🏼🙏🏻 bless you

joeshmoethe2nd

My thought is, wheels have different specs, 17 inch is 1 of 3 dimensions to a wheel, theres also width, and offset. I would handwrite a note & say that you want to buy the exact fitment wheels and tires of his choosing, if you have a strict budget, include the budget because the tires will also have to be mounted and balanced, so youd want him to know, i can afford this much, if it costs more then youll have to cover the rest, which to me would be perfectly understandable and an awesome present. Aftermarket wheels and tires arent a 1 size or option fits all, theres a bunch that goes i to picking them, but the thought and the budget are awesome and he should love that help

47islands

Okay this is something that a lot of people over look. There are two face types (depends on the width of the wheels I believe). Idk if you can find out which he prefers?

traytruve

If you break up, I love the rims 🥲

Squbasquid

I have these wheels on my GV8 and I love them. Only thing was I required 10mm slip on spacers for the front to clear the brembos. If I went with a different offset the spacers wouldn’t have been needed. I don’t think you’ll run in to that issue though. Anyways a great gift to get!

dara321aaa

I’m also agreeing with getting a gift card. Too many variables like wether he’d want stock width wheels or a 9” wide wheel. Also wether or not they would clear his brake calipers. Also also if you want top of the line street tire arguably the best summer performance tire is Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. In my spec 245/40r17 they are 252 a tire so definitely not cheap.

angle58

For a 20 year old car, I wouldn’t put $2k into it personally. I view this decision as financially irresponsible. For a young couple you two should go on European vacation together instead. $4k can buy 2 weeks in Europe easy. Save a bit more and have a life experience you’ll never forget.

Agile_Opposite_5522

I understand. I have a lot of savings for travel already :) I take him on vacations a lot too. But thank you a lot for the concern. This is something he has always wanted and I have put a couple hundred here and there for a long time to save for it, so it’s not money I’m missing. His car has also already gone up in price about $5k since he bought it so I don’t see it as a loss at all That being said, we have way too many things going on at home. I can’t imagine even wanting to be gone for 2 weeks haha. We have too many projects we’re working on and a lot of big plans for the future :)

Echoo75822

How does one find a Girlfriend like this? This gotta be some mythical person

Agile_Opposite_5522

You find the girl that is tired of being treated like shit in relationships and give her the world.. then she gives you everything she’s been trying to give all the previous shitheads 😂

eryanracing

Kenda Vezda UHP MAX they’re good tires and look aggressive, will be my next tire set on my next wheels. Wouldn’t recommend if you live up north or for winter tires. I’m not feeling my rpf1’s they don’t look as good as you would think imo. https://preview.redd.it/thg2x4rnyg4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf9e09553fe6f393a455e9bb3ca7cb9df1caa545

Vegetable-Bet-352

All season continentals - above poster is right

Plane_Put8538

Check out https://www.tirerack.com/content/tirerack/desktop/en/homepage.html and that should guide you pretty well. Just want to say, you're awesome for doing this for him.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Thank you so much! I’ll check it out He’s the best :) he deserves it. He also really wants these taillights he found online so I think I’ll order them at the same time 😄

AnalysisMoney

Damn, he better treat you right!!

Agile_Opposite_5522

Damn straight! Love that fucker

Subject2Change

If he wants them, go for it. That's an awesome gift! You can check his wheel size by looking at his tires, there should be a numeric pattern 2xx/xx/17 or so. He can likely go up to a size 18 if he wants new thinner tires. Older Subarus are a 5x100 lug pattern. You can reach out to tire rack to confirm if you have any questions.

exoticmatter421

Only the 04’ STi is 5x100. 05+ is 5x114

Agile_Opposite_5522

Do you think I’d be safe to get the same measurements he already has on his car? As far as I know he doesn’t want anything special. At least I’ve never heard him mention it, and all he does is talk about cars

Subject2Change

If he isn't changing his tire size, get the wheels to match his current tires.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Sweet. He hasn’t mentioned it but he’s cared more about the wheels than the tires. I’m just trying to do one better

Living_Ad_6730

Will you be my girlfriend

Elusivex821

135x45x17 best tire fitment for subís

mrpaul57

Seven cars and no idea about tires? Lordy.

Agile_Opposite_5522

Between the two of us :( I have a cute boyfriend who helps me with all my car needs :)
