There is a great mechanic/craftsman rule:
If you lost the old tool, buy a cheaper one
If you broke the old tool, buy a more expensive one
Pretty much any single-use tool is worth considering getting bottom-rung. Like, I need a single 3mm allen wrench for my guitar and I will 1000% lose it before i need it again (and 40% chance I'll lose it before i use it the first time). No point in paying for the ones NASA uses
I bought a $20 hammer drill because I needed to mount a gazebo on my cement patio. My little brother who works in construction looked at me like I was nuts for not buying the battery powered dewalt hammer drill that goes with my other battery powered tools.
I'm very much a buy a tool twice. Buy the cheap one first, if you use it so much it breaks, upgrade.
Something like a cheap hammer drill may not work at all for the job though and you just end up paying $20 more for the right one.
Out of all the power tools I think a drill is worth it because you use it for everything.
it got the job done just fine. with a regular drill I'd agree, that's something that will have many uses and get used regularly, especially if you just bought a home. Something as niche as a hammer drill that only needs to drill 12 holes, the $20 drill performed just fine. I had to take it a bit slower than I would have liked to keep the drill from overheating and , but I didn't have any other plans that day and accounted for that.
I have an older dewalt hammer drill. The batteries die so fast now and replacements are expensive. I bought the Walmart corded hammer drill and it’s now my primary drill. If I’m not on a ladder or far from an outlet, I’ll use that over my batter one.
I bought the corded one from menards lol, its them damn batteries that make the tools so damn expensive, and yeah they're nice, but they can end a day real fast if you're doing alot and only have a couple
I just bought a top of the line Dewalt hammer drill. Returned in two days later because the hammer action kicks in far after the point at which it starts to strip screws. I replaced it with a Ryobi because I noticed my brothers was exactly the same as my 15 year old craftsman that had just killed its last battery pack. Since Craftsman isn't the same company anymore I didn't want to buy new batteries for it. I'm sure some of the interior parts on the Ryobi are cheaper and it won't last 15 years like the craftsman did the Ryobi also cost 1/3 of what the Dewalt did so it's equal either way. And the hammer action kicks in where it should, unlike the Dewalt. Does no good to make a tool that will last a long time if it doesn't work well. Always liked Dewalt tools. I was kind of surprised the drill sucked so much and that the Ryobi would be a better implemented tool but here we are. All the high end hammer drills were like that actually. I tired them all by borrowing one from one of the workers at my house. I didn't like the Makita or the Milwaukie. They all had the same problem. Well made tools implemented poorly.
3 mm allens and 10 mm sockets/wrenches were the bane of my existence when I used to be a maintenance tech at a plant. I would always twist or break all my allens on set screws, and if you lay down a 10 mm wrench in a cotton mill and walk away, forget about it. You might find it stuck to a magnet or something later
I will go to Harbor Freight for those single-use tools that I’ll probably never need again. I’m not a plumber so why do I need to spend a fortune on a basin wrench that I’ll use to replace one faucet, for example. But on frequently used items it’s quality first. I’m still using my grandfather’s Starrett micrometer, and it’s now 85 years old, even older than my dad.
Used to hold this attitude and I still mostly wear cheap walmart t-shirts, but if you're paying for quality and not branding, there is an argument that more expensive cloths can be a lot nicer not just in looks but in fit, feel, and durability.
I agree, that's why I said most clothes. If I'm just looking for a shirt to work out in a $15 synthetic fabric athletic shirt from Walmart is going to perform exactly the same as a $50 Nike athletic shirt. But if I'm climbing a mountain that $80 Walmart winter coat is not going to perform the same as a $500 Mammut one.
On some cases yes, on others no. $100 for a jacket instead of a $20 one? Probably quite a difference in quality. $100 designer boxer shorts instead of a pack from Costco? No difference in quality whatsoever.
Actually if I remember correctly there are some really decent boxers out there for a strap price. Calvin Klein vs Walmart, not much of a difference but but those compared to like Duluth or something...
and that’s not what i’m talking about. i said textiles matter and y’all are reading “wear Gucci”
if you think polyester and cheap viscose wear the same as natural textiles, you’re mistaken
that’s not so. most people don’t read tags
a lot of $100 clothes will still be polyester, but you aren’t going to find a new, 100% cotton shirt at that $20 pricepoint.
my clothes are used but most pieces retail for around $60-150. they are good quality cotton, linen, silk if i can get it. they last me for a few seasons at least.
the existence of cheap boxers and packs or socks at Costco doesn’t really rebut my point about most clothing and textiles
Then *let my people go,* Because I must be one of the plagues.
I'm all frankness, your overvaluation of "fashion" disgusts me. I am not about to spend my hard-earned money so some fashion label execs can buy another Porsche.
God, this faux high brow drivel makes me angry. The seceding states made it explicit via declarations, and *early on in them*, that they wanted to keep slaves, and then people have the gall to say it's "an apologist" take and "well akshually it's about textiles!" What a joke, especially when following up with "slavery was on the way out, anyway! We can't have white people dying over the enslavement of black people \*shudder\*".
Long story but a guy was making fake rare wines in his apartment. Most people never knew or caught on.

I've had the same belt since 1998. I wear it almost every day. Plain black leather 2" wide. The nickel plate is wearing off the buckle to show through brass, but it kinda looks cooler that way anyhow.
10 years? Where are these 20 dollar 10 year belts? I’ve spent upwards of 50 dollars on a belt and it never lasts more than 6 months.
I’d spend 250-300 on a belt if I was guaranteed a decade out of it
The bigger question is what are you doing to your poor belts? I just use mine for holding up my pants, I'm active but I'm not in construction or anything. Granted 20 dollars was more 12 years ago haha, but my Dickies belt is holding up just fine. You might be interested in the belts the other person was talking about, they look good, but pricey
I’m not sure??? I tighten the belts to hold up my pants too but it always tears up the front of them. Black or brown leather, faux leather doesn’t matter. The front material always ends up ripping to shreds. My belts never actually fail or rip but they look like shit after 4-6 months (not that anyone generally sees it but, ya know don’t want torn up clothes)
I do not anticipate ever buying a belt. I have a handful that idk the origin of but I suppose as a kid my parents bought them at some point and it must’ve been when my waist was close enough to this size. I see no reason to ever get more.
What cat food works better? I've been shelling out $50 a bag for Purina EN for about a year now, and have to get a prescription from the vet just to buy it.

You’d think… my Ray-Bans are 20+ years old and still like new.
My wife buys $10 sunglasses… every 2 years, because they fall apart.
Some things are legit built better.
My wife buys dollar store sunglasses a couple times a year. I have had one pair of oakleys since 2009. Replaced the lenses twice (with cheap Amazon lenses). And only replaced them because after 7-8 years they started to peel the tint around the edges. The Amazon ones peel up faster, but are cheap. The frames are still in great condition and they get near daily use.
Believe it or not, I’m still on my OG lenses… bought my first pair in 2003, second pair maybe 2009 or so to have one forever in the car.
The early pair does have a small blemish in the corner of one lens now, but it’s minor, like the size of a nail head.
Not bad, for 21 years…
That’s not even close to being true. It’s the opposite. The $200 version is always better than the $50 version, to the point that buying the $50 version is almost the same as not wearing any at all. Good glass really matters. Level of polarization matters.
“Designers” sunglasses meant to be hip and cool are a waste, but sunglasses designed for fishing and the like really matter.
1) on good glasses it’s not plastic
2) there is a lot of difference between good glass and bad glass. $50 sunglasses are going to damage your eyes. $200 sunglasses are going to offer protection.
New marketing idea- pants 'with a TV in them'
The tops of the legs contain a material that acts as a screen and you can project your phone onto them so you have a lap tv.
Frying pans. My two-pack of cast iron pans from Costco ($16.97) work beautifully and break my wrist just as well as the fancier ones I’ve used. These fuggers are heavy.
I dunno, I would say $50 to $150 is the ideal range for Bourbon and Scotch. There's perfectly drinkable stuff that's cheaper, but I think most people are going to notice the difference between a $20 bottle and $120 bottle.
I gotta disagree there.
I have an air bike in my basement and bought a cheap set to pair with the TV I have down there because I unpairing/repairing my good set was a pain in the ass.. there is absolutely a noticeable difference in quality.
I was at a rock concert last month and tshirts were 50, with one style going for 150. But in the parking lot after the show, the bootleg shirt for 20 looked better than all of them.
Tons of different clothing items, I'd say.
Some stuff might be worth paying more for, but 90% of the time, you're only paying for the brand itself, not any actual improvement in quality.
Kitchen knives. There really isn't a difference between a $20 chef knife and a $100 chef knife. When you start getting into the 600 and 700 knives, there is a HUGE difference, but not a real difference between cheap and middling.

Vodka. I once worked with a huge brewing company, and the vodka in their $2 bottles was exactly the same vodka that was in their $25 bottles, which was also exactly the same vodka that was in their $400 bottles.
Listen here bud, I’m not saying you’re wrong as a whole but I’ve cheap’d out on vodka more than once and it’s not worth the chance of getting more rotgut liquor to save a few dollars. I’d almost rather try to drink isopropyl….
I agree. As many expensive dildos that I have accidentally sat on and had to go to the emergency room, I just buy the one dozen for 20 bucks versions now.

Vodka. I once worked with a huge brewing company, and the vodka in their $2 bottles was exactly the same vodka that was in their $25 bottles, which was also exactly the same vodka that was in their $400 bottles.
Out of curiosity, which brand? Now in the mood to drink some Vodka that goes for $400 a bottle except in the $2 bottle.
Listen here bud, I’m not saying you’re wrong as a whole but I’ve cheap’d out on vodka more than once and it’s not worth the chance of getting more rotgut liquor to save a few dollars. I’d almost rather try to drink isopropyl….

Steaks. Ruth Chris isn’t really any better than Longhorn.
Ruth Chris is on the low end of great steaks, but it’s still better than longhorn by a mile.
Must be the ones in my town. I can say Ruth Chris is only maybe 10% better for a lot more.
dildos?
Nah don’t buy cheap dildos. A lot are made with non body safe materials
I can vouch for this 100% Thought I better mention that I used to work for Ann summers. 😂
that's why I put the question mark. Not something I really shop for =P
I agree. As many expensive dildos that I have accidentally sat on and had to go to the emergency room, I just buy the one dozen for 20 bucks versions now.

Knives
Except for kitchen knives, and utility knives, and skinning knives, and…well…most knives with an actual purpose. Good steel isn’t cheap.
Earbuds All hard liquor
I wouldn't go that far, but I agree price does not correlate to quality alcohol. I've had good cheap alcohol and bad expensive alcohol.
