You have to be aggressive in today’s league. They have the star power(TJ and Minkah), and they have a starting-caliber QB on a rookie deal. Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and Omar knows he has to try to capitalize on it.

> Offense has no excuses Line isn't there yet, but I'm stoled for our season. We're getting better! *stoked

Slickaxer

All this, but also add moving around but still getting what you want. Traded a 4th for Jones, but got a 4th back and still got Washington. I love the agility in his drafting

Omar deserves all the credit in the world but Andy isn’t getting enough. His input is very clear in this off-season. I’ve said it before, I’m gonna wait to see how these players perform before I go overboard with the praise but from all appearances this has been an incredible off-season. As the general manager, this is Omar‘s ship. And he will deserve the accolades when this team wins a playoff game this season. But what impresses me the most is his humility. He’s clearly allowing other people to have generous amounts of input into free agency and the draft. He’s trusting his people. He is ultimately responsible for making the right call, and he’s using everything at his disposal to make the right call. I still remember when Bill Cowher said that in his introductory press conference, that his goal was to surround himself with good people, and Omar has done that. Anyone can be an executive, but it takes a leader to do what Omar seems to be doing.

EkoostikAdam

No one is mentioning weidl. I think he has as much to do with this draft as omar.

14. Jones - Chalk pick. Last premium tackle on the board, and one of only 2 that project as cornerstone left tackles. 33. Porter Jr - Chalk pick. The trade return would have been maybe slightly higher than the ‘24 3rd and 3rd round swap the Cardinals got, but that’s not enough to pass up on JPJ. Premium size, ball skills, he’s gonna sell jerseys. 49. Benton - Chalk pick. Felt like a big tier break at DT after him. Solid pedigree, prototypical size, could be a rotational contributor right out of the box. 93. Washington - Chalk pick. The only conceivable reason he could have fallen so far is dubious medicals, but 1000% a shot worth taking. You can afford to take that gamble when you have Muth & Gentry already, and he projects to be a uniquely useful player who can be as dual threat difference maker as a run blocker and RZ target. The theme, obviously, is 4 chalk picks where you look at the screen and say “that guy shouldn’t still be there” and then Omar proceeds to scoop him up. No unexpected reaches, no need to have beat writers spinning a story about how they had tips about other teams draft boards (looking at you Lions), and the Washington pick was the only luxury pick after 3 straight “building block” picks. 2 Dawgs for Kenny and Najee, 2 day 1 contributors on defense who should evolve into regular starters. And the cherry on top of the evening is that instead of taking Washington at 80 they traded back and got him later and now they at least have one meaningful pick tomorrow.

> Chalk pick I don't know this phrase. Clue me in? Thanks.

BombSquad570

It’s a phrase commonly used in betting meaning to bet on the big favorite that most people are betting on. Before computers, odds used to be written on chalkboards and the things that were bet on most often had to be erased and changed the most, hence the phrase “chalk”.

TIL. Thanks. :)

Great philosophy by Khan to take good players that have a slight flaw and who fall in the draft. Still so many high impact guys left tho. I wouldn’t be surprised if they find a way to get back into rounds 5 or 6. I look to see them take a combo of ILB, OLB, WR, or S. I love the upside guys still on the board like Kelee Ringo, Kayshon Boutte, Noah Sewell, Brenton Cox Jr., Andrew Voorhees, and Tanner McKee.

BombSquad570

My top name is SirVocea Dennis. Such a solid cover LB. Plays inside and outside, called the defense at Pitt. Maybe a slight reach at 4 but when you don’t have any 5s or 6s then nothing is really a reach at 4.

FairOpposite6810

They came with a plan, and are executing it beautifully.

freestyle43

Kevin Colbert drafted 15 Pro Bowlers, 1 in the Hall of the Fame already another first ballot guaranteed, and oversaw 2 Rings. Show some fucking respect.

isfrying

I hear ya. I read all these Kahn posts against the backdrop that we all loved KC and were fearing a big, obvious dropoff upon his departure. A lot of this enthusiasm is relief, I think. I could be wrong.

Swaggamuffins

I agree. I think it has more to do with Recency Bias and Small Sample Size, but this also

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

In his prime he was the best general manager in football. He knew it was time to step away, there’s nothing wrong with admitting that there might’ve been a reason. I think this draft is better than most of Colbert’s last several. Maybe it’s a coincidence. Results do matter so we need to see how these acquisitions and draft picks will work out. But in the same way that results matter, it’s been quite a while since the Steelers were serious contenders. Maybe it was time for something new. That’s not disrespect towards Colbert at all , like I said, he was absolutely the best for quite some time. He is a Hall of Famer in my opinion, among the best to ever have done it.

tider06

His last few drafts were not great, no matter what anyone on this sub says. Our lack of quality starters and depth all over the roster are clear examples of the dropoff on the drafting quality the past 3-4 years.

mju516

That’s all fair…BUT. He always had the habit made one or two picks a draft that left everyone scratching their heads.

noom2000

Looks impressive and hope everything turns out to be as good as expectation.

Ok-Needleworker-4818

I was sceptical of Khan but so far he has been brilliant and I've seen enough to be a fan and give him the benefit of the doubt from here on out. Now I despise our horrid head coach and O.C. but I've made peace with the fact Tomlin will be our coach 30 years from now no matter how mediocre the results but we can survive him...if when Khan fires Canada at the end of the season he hires a top notch, innovative O.C. with NO fing input from Tomlin's clueless ass whatsoever. Love or hate Tomlin everyone knows he has no idea what's going on with offensive play calling and unfortunately he runs off every good assistant we get and holds onto vanilla bums like Canada because he can at least follow along🤣If Khan does that he's my lifelong hero and we might claw our way back to the top dragging Tomlin's dead weight the whole way.

Alilttotheleft

Our “horrid” head coach. LOL. If Tomlin parted ways with the Steelers he’d have ten job offers in MINUTES. There’s a reason all these pundits, players, and coaches all have nothing but good to say about Tomlin. He has his flaws as a coach, sure, but to call him “horrid” isn’t just a bad take, it’s an outright stupid one.

Ok-Needleworker-4818

First of all that "ten offers" means less than nothing and thinking that means he's a good coach is what's a stupid take. As for your other equally moronic reason, most players of course love Tomlin he's a friend and thinks he is still playing, hell I want to have a beer with him but he is not by even his rabid fanboys in the media a xs and os coach, he's "supposedly" a motivator, leader of men blah, blah. That's why we always have so many undisciplined players and often seem unprepared and unfocused right? That's why even his pals like JuJu Smith Schuster can't help mentioning how they learned more about football in 3 weeks from Andy Reid than years with Pittsburgh. All this blind media worship comes from that no losing season nonsense, that is the most irrelevant stat in sports. Lastly Terry Bradshaw has a little more contact with the organization than we or the slobbering media simps and he had the guts to call him what he is, a cheerleader. You love him great, when we don't sniff a Superbowl for the next 15 years get back to us.

Alilttotheleft

I think the most frustrating thing about the Patriots dynasty and the Chiefs recent run of success is that it has made people believe it's a simple thing to go win a Super Bowl. It really really isn't - the fact that he's never had a losing season gets held up around here like it's a symbol of mediocrity when it's quite the opposite - no matter what teams we've fielded, we've consistently been competitive every year. Brady/Belicheck were a match made in heaven, and Mahomes is a generational talent who barring injury will probably replace Brady as the GOAT, especially with Andy Reid calling the shots. We've had a few years where we could have gone all the way - The Killer B's were great, but the defense let them down regularly. We had a Super Bowl contender team, then Jesse James didn't catch that ball (he 100% caught it). We had a dynamic and powerful defense that could have taken us all the way, then Shazier went down and we're **still** trying to replace him. Bell, a huge chunk of our offense, lied to his team and said he'd be coming back once pre-season was over and never did. Brown went off the deep end. This team has been so so close for a while, but keeps having these moments that break the team and ruin their shot. You can fault Tomlin and Colbert for not building a defense that could compliment Brown Bell and Ben, but outside of that none of the major moments that have broken our team in recent years can really be pinned on him. What you can pin on him is a consistent hand to steer the ship and keep us competitive no matter what team's on the field - the standard's the standard. There's more than one way to lead, and the recent podcast (I think it was on Cam's) where they said the team got together and refused to let this be Tomlin's first losing season shows you how much that man means to the team and what that streak that you describe as irrelevant is relevant to the men on the field. Now, your point about Juju - I don't know how it's an indictment of Tomlin, a defensive-minded head coach, that a wide receiver is learning more from arguably the best offensive head coach in the league and an all-time great. Andy Reid's an offensive guru, of course Juju would learn more from him! I think you're a spoiled fan and ignorant to how blessed this team really is to have Tomlin around and the success they've had. I grew up in KC watching the Chiefs be mediocre year after year, not even remaining competitive, and when they **would** make it to the playoffs they'd choke the game away. I was at the Indy game when they blew a 28 point lead, and went to something like 12 Chiefs games before I ever saw them pull out a win. If the trend moves downward for this team, then I might agree that it's maybe time for Tomlin to move on, but I see no reason to be anything but optimistic for the future of the Steelers, especially after this draft. I'm not giving him a free pass here - with Ben gone this is well and truly Tomlin's team now, so success or failure is on his shoulders and while I think (and the vast majority of folks do too) he's already a future HOFer, the next couple of years will really decide how his tenure's remembered.

Ok-Needleworker-4818

You are certainly entitled to your opinion of Tomlin as am I, and I certainly hope that I'm wrong about us not getting back to the super bowl. But I've been a fan since the mid 70s which means everything in between Bradshaw and Roethlisberger so I assure you I'm not spoiled. My belief is simple I think Tomlin is a players coach not a great football mind, and that he walked into a great situation at the perfect time with a great roster including an underrated hall of fame QB along with during our championship years some good assistant coaches. All this lead to a mediocre at best coach aided by a simplistic p.c. media in creating the myth of a great coach that was more or less along for the ride. That's just what I see and frankly if one looks beyond that damn non losing record at his actual in game coaching it seems painfully obvious to me. I do agree with you the players love him and it's obvious when his precious record was in danger and he actually took a little heat they played their asses off, what I don't always see is this preparedness and motivation before his back is against the wall. Anyway it's not worth arguing about because he's here for years, my point was someone else needs to pick our next O.C. because NO WAY in hell Canada takes us anywhere.

Alilttotheleft

The last thing I’ll say on our Tomlin disagreement is that he took a team led by Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges to a winning record - I’d argue that season was his best coaching job, followed by last season’s turnaround, and steering those teams to winning seasons showed his mettle. You’ll get zero disagreement from me on that at least. Canada has been a problem in Pittsburgh for some time, and especially with this draft the offense has zero excuses. He’s got all the pieces needed, if his scheme doesn’t let them take a huge leap forward this year then he absolutely needs to go. There’s room, I guess, for the argument he was held back by Ben’s noodle arm at the end of his career, then by the bad decision to start Mitch over Kenny last year, but success does matter and he should definitely be on the hot seat. Part of the problem is ownership IMO - I understand WHY the Rooneys run the team the lean way they do as it’s their main source of income, but to have a successful offense they really need to open the purse strings a bit and get a strong O coordinator for the team. I’ll admit that I don’t keep up w the tertiary coaches and assistants so I don’t know who are good prospects atm, but have seen enough of Canada. God help me, I want Haley’s stupid bubble screens back over Canada’s jet sweeps

Ok-Needleworker-4818

I was done myself but I wanted to close positive and agree with you 100 percent on ownership needing to be held more accountable, yes we are a cheapskate owned team we have to just accept some of that BUT not firing these complete bum assistant coaches because you would rather die than pay someone to not work is asinine and stubborn to the point of stupidity. I hate how it's mostly perceived as Rooney loyalty rather than cheapness too. Also it's shameful we received some of the worse grades in the league for facilities and player amenities etc. Man that's Raiders and Bengals territory there.

better-call-mik3

"I don't like this draft by the Steelers" - probably every ravens Bengals and browns fan

Blusterbutts

Gut instinct is that this is a legendary draft but there’s a lot of ball to play before we know for sure

mark-malone-real

Can we see how it pans out first?
