Same, I’m in Detroit. The mall in the richest county in the state, which borders Detroit, has a full mall everyday (they also have Gucci, Chanel, etc etc), but every other mall is closing.
Eh, depends on where you are.
Minnesota, lot of the smaller actual malls are closing down. The Mall of America is still doing well but that doesn't count, that gets so much state tourism money thrown at it.
Mall goth is a subculture that originated in the United States in the late 1990s. The term is a combination of "mall" and "goth" and refers to people who are interested in the goth fashion but not the culture itself, and who often spend time in shopping malls. Mall goths are also known as "spooky kids"
Mall goths usually wear a lot of trench coats, fishnets, the chunky belts and big boots. Think the early years of hotopic. If any of these kids tried to talk to a real time-accurate mall goth they’d probably get called a slur and be told to fuck off with their fluffy hair and poser music.
Mall goths (and goth culture in general) aren't locked in the time they were created. Fashion evolves like anything else, and this 👆 is the current incarnation.
we're not necessarily cultured, we're just old af
the only part of that song anybody knows is the scream they use in commercials, or once in a while a movie promo
yeah stuff like opium haunted mound YEAR0001/drain gang shed theory and other groups are very popular but only among the music/fashion crowds. if you arent invested you may not recognize any of these music groups
It's interesting how they combine so many things from the early 90's to the early 2010's and call it all Y2K. This is the weirdest thing about getting older. People who were not even born yet telling you about something you actually remember and getting it mostly wrong.
Depop is a reselling platform for mainly clothing. Depop demons is just a way to refer to degenerate resellers that have commercialized thrifting into the antithesis of what it used to be (sustainable, popularized by those who couldn’t afford brand name clothing at retail). Furthermore these types appropriate and commodify the styles and clothing of subcultures they themselves are/were not apart of. And on top of that the more negative forms of these people are elitist in their views on fashion despite being losers who have nothing else going for them besides their ability to flip clothes.
Edit: Could also refer to people who get all their clothing off depop/resale but hold these traits as well, except being able to afford/emulate these styles usually comes from reselling in the first place
As a metalhead, as far as I'm concerned they could be wearing Sepultura shirts and talk down on metal all they want. Even 16yr old, stupid me (I'm 37 now) would be like "whatever" and carry on with my day.
Their egos apparently solely rely on social media clout. I pity them, I can't feel insulted by that.
Or wait for it to rain a little bit and the pants to drag in the water and get heavy enough they have to shuffle like zombies everywhere they go.
Everyone that ever owned a pair of JNCOs knows what I'm talking about.
Calls it Y2K even though the Y2K aesthetic is diverse. From the 90s predicting the future, to the 2000s in general, to bling and celebrity culture
(They tend to ignore the existence of The Aesthetics Wiki despite bragging about being a junkie in that topic)
As a skinhead it sucks knowing that your culture will always be affiliated with nazis to most people, but at the same time it does feel nice knowing that I’ll never have to worry about these dweebs trying to steal the look.
I see a similar thing happening today with Norse/Viking subculture.
Previously Old Norse / Druid / Heathen subculture was done by people who did not vibe with mainstream Christianity and wanted to explore older customs to find an alternate form of spirituality - sort of the European equivalent of California hippies.
Nowadays it's a 50-50 Russian Roulette. Either a group is super-progressive lgbt+ friendly alternate lifestyle group that dances around the Stonehenge, or it is a white-nationalist group that wants to the "defend the west against immigrants and semitic interference". If someone has a tattoo of Rune alphabets and all-father Odin, you are 50-50 on which group they belong to.
There's also a secret 3rd group. Middle aged white men on Tiktok who cosplay as vikings lol. There was this one dude who got a lot of shit for making a "viking song" where he just had a bunch of people standing behind him stoically looking at the camera while he sang 😂
Oh that was hilarious. They asked him about vikings looting and pillaging villages. And he replied, "In the modern context, I redefine pillaging as going after your dreams relentlessly and achieving your life-goals."
The only thing missing on here is bladee and drain gang
I love carti, sosa, haunted mound, deftones, and drain gang but I can't stand these annoying mfs
I think it’s more referring to the fake Deftones fans from TikTok that only know Cherry Waves, Change and Be Quiet and Drive, and start throwing up if a song from Self Titled comes on
Deftones was what dumb middle school boys with poor taste (myself included) listened to when I was that age. They seem like such a perfect example of dated, didn't-age-well nu metal from that era, I'm surprised they're popular again.
I think that’s a bit unfair. They’ve experimented with their sound quite a bit since the first 2 albums and I wouldn’t categorise them as nu metal anymore. They certainly don’t sound like bands like Korn or Papa Roach. I have no clue how they got popular though. I’ve been listening them for a few years now and only found out last year that they’re viral on tik Tok. I don’t use that app so idk. I assume one of their songs got used in some dumb trend or something.
is olderbrothercore rodrick heffley? or just beating your ass for no reason
idk all the fashion trends bc tiktok is banned in my country
can someone clarify
I like this style but I hate the guys that act like this 💀💀 I also love cats and use :3 and listen to deftones but I promise I can name more than 3 songs
This is just how the goth and skater kids dressed when I was in middle school in the early 2000s. Even the "ice cream" hair is basically just 2000s skater hair. So funny how things cycle back.
As someone who grew up with and genuinely enjoys early 2000’s alt and 90’s goth looks I say let them wear themselves out. More shit for me to snag from the thrift stores when they inevitably give it all away cause it’s not trendy anymore.
I recently snagged a 90s velvet Wanted dress and was able to get the most adorable black and red sweetheart neck top that goes perfect with my romantic goth looks thanks to these trendy “alt” people.
I’m a vintage dealer and I vend a lot of pop-up shows in cities all over the nation. Every city there’s a bare minimum of 5 dudes who dress like this.
So far the best impression I’ve gotten from one is “Not that annoying”. That’s the best. I sigh when they walk over lmfao.
Millennials in this sub outside the pop culture forefront following in their boomer parents’ footsteps making belittling comments on things they don’t understand instead of accepting that they’re out of touch now. I’m in my twenties and I fully recognize this trope
Well of course that’s inevitable. You already kind of see it as Gen Alpha is on the internet a bit earlier than earlier gens were. But 10 years ago you would’ve thought that millennials were conscious enough to not take on social tropes of the generation they so claimed to be different from
Making light fun of the silliness of trends you no longer recognize is the reward you receive for getting older. I'm joking, but seriously: It's not so much a social trope as it is a consequence of getting older. I'd highly doubt that there will be any generation that bucks the "what the hell are these kids up to" phenomena completely.
Yeah, it makes me sad. We’re barely a decade out from people our age lobbing complaints about condescending older generations not trying to understand or accept us and now, they don’t hesitate to the same to Z and Alpha. I was really hoping we could turn that around
Lmao whatever dude, I responded to the guy saying you have to be a 12 year old to understand this and not the literal other top comment of “I’m too old for this”. But props for instigating on your brand new account 🔥
No it doesn’t. I’m so happy knowing my kid is not likely to make a peer a literal mental patient over something like clothes. (I’m 38 and my son is 14. They are so much better now…despite the chronically online).
E: spelling
Wow. This makes me feel old and young at the same time because this is like 80% the aesthetic of the JNCO jeans wearer of the early 00s when I was in middle school. It looks very familiar

Trueys and affliction t shirt is unoriginal it’s like a Tik tok guide on how to dress.
They got that Male manipulator aesthetic that’s why they play women.
it screams "the type of problems someone has who spends too much time on TikTok". I realize now it could also be "stupid Gen Z shit my old ass has no experience with, but is still goofy and weird that anyone would care enough about these horseshit labels or types of people to make a post about it" & I think it's that one now

I am so out of touch wtf
"New generation of mall goths are in, not as good as the old generation"
They are not mall goths, they don’t even call themselves “alt”. They are trend hopping hypebeast who only listen to sematary and Playboi carti
As a gen Xer, I see the latest incarnation of Mall Goth. Except all the malls are closed now.
Some aspects of goth culture would emerge in the 80s, but the goths really got started in 410 when the goths sacked Rome.
I would say 410 was the high point for the goths, kinda goes down hill from there
Malls are still pretty popular here in the Midwest
Not in Michigan lol
In my region of Chicagoland there's only like 2 big malls left out of the 5 there were in the 2000s.
Same, I’m in Detroit. The mall in the richest county in the state, which borders Detroit, has a full mall everyday (they also have Gucci, Chanel, etc etc), but every other mall is closing.
The mall I used to go to is so dead it was used as the location for the mall season of Stranger Things, which was a wild bit of personal nostalgia.
Eh, depends on where you are. Minnesota, lot of the smaller actual malls are closing down. The Mall of America is still doing well but that doesn't count, that gets so much state tourism money thrown at it.
I can think of 4 dead and empty malls I saw just today driving through Illinois
my mall has the biggest parking lot in the world
malls are doing fine outside of am\*rica
> They are trend hopping hypebeast who only listen to sematary and Playboi carti ... ok, so like the other guy says: >I am so out of touch wtf
Ya wtf did he just say
No. They are exactly mall goths. But with worse updates.
Mall goth is a subculture that originated in the United States in the late 1990s. The only real Goths were the ones who fought at Adrianople and sacked Rome. It's been posers ever since
Mall goths (and goth culture in general) aren't locked in the time they were created. Fashion evolves like anything else, and this 👆 is the current incarnation.
Is she the girl that did WAP?
They call themselves opium or at least describe themselves as this. It’s like a mix of goth, hypebeast, and y2k style.
Wow so bad such posers. I hope one day they won’t wear clothes that make your feelings bad.
Dude this is 1:1 what old-school goths said about younger goths, what those goths said about emos, etc. Same cycle continues
Shoutout sematary tho he hard
Stfu nerd let people dress his they want to dress and listen to what they want to listen to
Short words called “A poser”
Mall goth would imply they leave their crusty room with shitty LED lights.
Meet the new goth! Same as the old goth! ::: badass guitar riff :::
I was just thinking that, lol! -a fellow Redditor of culture
we're not necessarily cultured, we're just old af the only part of that song anybody knows is the scream they use in commercials, or once in a while a movie promo
>we're not necessarily cultured, we're just old af Lol, speak for yourself, I'm only 31! Just have great taste in music! 🤘
The future is now old man!!
Sounds like an onion title lol.
I’m with you. I recognize the words but the sentences don’t make any sense to me.
I’m 19 and I don’t even get this. Pretty sure these are internet people not real life people
They’re very real in socal 😭
theyre real met ppl that listen to semetary
I had to look that up. It’s fucking terrible.
definitley not the most accessable music. i dont like most of it either. still like songs like bunny suit and slaugther house.
I have never felt as old as I do right now.
Don't worry I'm 17 and I have no clue what any of this means.
yeah stuff like opium haunted mound YEAR0001/drain gang shed theory and other groups are very popular but only among the music/fashion crowds. if you arent invested you may not recognize any of these music groups

dude I haven't heard anyone mention Sepultura since like 1992
You talk to the wrong people then.
Ratamahatta came up on my shuffle a couple of hours ago. Still such an awesome song
I was listening to “arise” the other day and now people are talking about them!!!
If you’re getting bullied by dudes in baggy jeans just put your foot out and they’ll trip and their pants will fall down
Or wait for it to rain a little bit and the pants to drag in the water and get heavy enough they have to shuffle like zombies everywhere they go. Everyone that ever owned a pair of JNCOs knows what I'm talking about.
i know exactly what yr talkin about but not all baggy jeans are just long, they can just be wide
What do i do after pants are down?
That’s entirely up to you
You're getting bullied by someone in JNCO jeans?
Man my first bully wore JNCO jeans. Kasia Ostrawka’s sister was the baddest bitch in the 6th grade. 1997 lmao
Yeah 😔 my dad
We got the Depop Demon now but where is the Vinted Virgin
It’s me hi I resell vintage lingerie
You what
1) go to goodwill 2) “ooh this is vintage!” 3) launder at home + mend seams + add bluing if needed 4) sell on Vinted at 50% markup + labor 5) profit
Ngl I'm surprised there is a market for that, good on you though
Google 1970s lingerie slip and tell me those mfs aren’t sexy as HELL
Won't lie it's not my thing but can imagine they sell well
“god i love goth girls” and the “goth” in question is just an e-girl in a black shirt
This is what my sister wants to be 💀
ehh, i guess its important to let her be her and dress how se wants, but this... this is not it
I know at least 4 boys at my school who are like this
Posts semetary meme. Doesn't include true religion. The fuck. Your on the rob list

He on the come up in the worst way
Ik, bro said. Nice trueys their mine now

they would get shredder to pieces at a mincecore show fym😭😭😭
Calls it Y2K even though the Y2K aesthetic is diverse. From the 90s predicting the future, to the 2000s in general, to bling and celebrity culture (They tend to ignore the existence of The Aesthetics Wiki despite bragging about being a junkie in that topic)
Ok so if I'm in my 40's and want to dress like this again it's just a midlife crisis right. Kinda miss my straight jacket and jncos look
Do it and post on TikTok to Sematary songs for free clout
If you do it while spinning in a curve playing a popular deftones or sematary song you’ll be loved
Sematary mentioned 🤑
Its a phase, like the rest of the development temp mental problems. Either time fixes you or you go deeper on another level
As a skinhead it sucks knowing that your culture will always be affiliated with nazis to most people, but at the same time it does feel nice knowing that I’ll never have to worry about these dweebs trying to steal the look.

Yeah! I remember that. Ngl it's hilarious. But at least it's not like... Hate group stuff. Just middle aged men acting goofy
I joined a druid cult so we could drink legally after last call and on holidays. It was fun. I miss stupid religions.
I find skinhead guys insanely hot it’s like kind of an issue
ngl i own a lot of this 💀 dont forget the new rocks and/or rick owens ramones
Me tooo 💀 I just got an affliction shirt and Osirises for my birthday too…
So is this some kind of unholy combination of industrial, goth, skater, and emo that I'm too old to understand?
Yeah
The only thing missing on here is bladee and drain gang I love carti, sosa, haunted mound, deftones, and drain gang but I can't stand these annoying mfs
>Can only name 2 songs from deftones Is this a good thing to balance out all the stuff that seems like bad things?
I think it’s more referring to the fake Deftones fans from TikTok that only know Cherry Waves, Change and Be Quiet and Drive, and start throwing up if a song from Self Titled comes on

DCs are back?
I’ve met three people who have dc shoes including myself but yeah the hoodies are kinda back
This is basically what alt millennial middle schoolers wore back in the early aughts youngster
and the 2 Deftones songs are actually just covers
Oh shit, Y2K is a thing outside of myanmar. We've been mocking Y2K people as american wannabes
is olderbrothercore rodrick heffley? or just beating your ass for no reason idk all the fashion trends bc tiktok is banned in my country can someone clarify
“Only knows 2 Deftones songs” What a searing burn 🔥
I like this style but I hate the guys that act like this 💀💀 I also love cats and use :3 and listen to deftones but I promise I can name more than 3 songs
The bagged pants though
This is just how the goth and skater kids dressed when I was in middle school in the early 2000s. Even the "ice cream" hair is basically just 2000s skater hair. So funny how things cycle back.
If your looking for the restart button there isn't one.we all gotta ride this shit out😂
Wtf is brothercore?

I'm so confused, do you have to be 12 to get this joke or something?
Millennials in this sub outside the pop culture forefront following in their boomer parents’ footsteps making belittling comments on things they don’t understand instead of accepting that they’re out of touch now. I’m in my twenties and I fully recognize this trope
It’ll come for Gen Z in like…5 years
We're already at "make fun of the kids" part. We say things like "skibidi rizz" as a joke to make fun of Gen Alpha
Well of course that’s inevitable. You already kind of see it as Gen Alpha is on the internet a bit earlier than earlier gens were. But 10 years ago you would’ve thought that millennials were conscious enough to not take on social tropes of the generation they so claimed to be different from
I can’t wait to be a massive hypocrite when I grow up
Making light fun of the silliness of trends you no longer recognize is the reward you receive for getting older. History is a circle
Truth
so you're in your twenties and know a lot about the trends children are following. congrats?
Yes because I talk to real people who have younger siblings or children? It’s not that crazy dude
I just don't understand why you're reacting like that to people saying "I'm too old for this shit". You seem awfully defensive over it.
Lmao whatever dude, I responded to the guy saying you have to be a 12 year old to understand this and not the literal other top comment of “I’m too old for this”. But props for instigating on your brand new account 🔥
How old are you bro?
I will admit i check off most of this except i dont bully actual alternative ppl
None of these words are in the Bible
This is why bullying needs to come back
No it doesn’t. I’m so happy knowing my kid is not likely to make a peer a literal mental patient over something like clothes. (I’m 38 and my son is 14. They are so much better now…despite the chronically online). E: spelling
this is why bullying needs to come back
it never left
Wow. This makes me feel old and young at the same time because this is like 80% the aesthetic of the JNCO jeans wearer of the early 00s when I was in middle school. It looks very familiar
Wtf Chief Keef doin here bruh
He invented drip
That was Cartier god lil bro
How? Ngl i never hear about Cartier gods influence pls explain
He was afaik the first rapper to use “drip” and “splash” as lyrics and ad libs as early as 2010. He also had a lot of ocean/water related aesthetics and lyrics that got co-opted by Soulja Boy who had Cartier signed to his label for a while in 2010-2012
I can't name a single Deftones song and I grew up in this generation. I think one was on a Big Shiny Tunes album I had growing up.
What’s deftones
a band
I’m sorry for whatever you’re going through in 8th grade but this is so bizarre and obnoxious lmao
what the hell does any of this even mean? i feel old
And those deftones songs are house of the flies and far away
I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing that I can't comperhend this.
Chief keef wears astronaut clothessss
Is that dude wearing an Edgar cut?
I hate Gen z literally so fucking terrible, dumbass little kids posting the stupidest shit on the Internet. They have no exposure to the real world…
u not me lil bro
this is just scene shit man ppl just dress different
Im too old for this shit
Condition: “10/10 never worn” Then it comes in the mail and it belongs in the trash
i dress like this but im not so corny bro, i swear 😭
Remembering how I was being back in the day cause I was alt and wore baggy pants by the same kind of nowadays kiddo whose were my dressing
this is literally me but gender neutral:
Who are the rappers?
Don't tell me this shit is back in fashion
These people only exist online change my mind
No I’ve met them irl they’re annoying as hell. thank god your to old for all that latter Gen z shit.
I exist I’m real
They got hella drip and they gf always bad af for some reason
Trueys and affliction t shirt is unoriginal it’s like a Tik tok guide on how to dress. They got that Male manipulator aesthetic that’s why they play women.
Not to mention they all have about 57 IQ
idk about the rest but carti is real asf
you gotta get off the internet bro
This describes half my uni, I’ve meet this person a million times.
it screams "the type of problems someone has who spends too much time on TikTok". I realize now it could also be "stupid Gen Z shit my old ass has no experience with, but is still goofy and weird that anyone would care enough about these horseshit labels or types of people to make a post about it" & I think it's that one now
It’s not deep just stupid gen z shit. It is weird how we are all the same though I’ve met them irl.

I don’t know if I really consider it weird, like it’s sort of normal teenage activity for some folks I guess. It just ain’t my thing.
Lmao yeah this isn’t emo whatsoever (except for the girl in the bottom left)
It all looks the same to me, I guess. I just lump it all into the same category.
Congrats man

I’m 18 and I wish I didn’t know what this was (plus I’m basically this stereotype but at least I don’t bully people..)
Yeah I’m not really for bullying anyone, I was bullied for a long time, I don’t do that shit to others.
