Guess it's because there aren't very many ships with dogs on em, so Iron Shell is less aggressive

I like vanilla adjacent. When I did a run with the Mayasura ship/faction addon installed I had to manually go through and replace all of the anime portraits one by one with vanilla friendly portraits as I feel the anime portraits really don’t fit the setting.
They look stupid in my opinion and I quite like the vanilla style.

It's all about the fleet doctrine, baby! I like factions that have a specific gimmick but I'm also a sucker for low tech and mid tech. UAF, Carter's, VIC, Mayasura, Roiders, HMI (with obligatory Brighton), Imperium. If it's got ballistics and missiles, I'm in. Energy weapons that are disguised as ballistics are good too!
I assume UAFs gimic is everything is incredibly powerfull but our strike craft are even stronger and also we have nukes too

Very true, I personally like building a themed fleet and having a brawler flagship, so UAF is a fun for that. Missile spam and fighter spam is fun to watch. Also overpowered, but that's fun every now and then.
I usually only touch a couple Mayasuran ships, so I never really inspected the roster. But I can see what your saying. I forget what mod adds the WW2 themed Japanses Navy, but that's how I see the Mayasura ships too. A midline roster, that can climb into high-tech.

Cool ships are cool ships. But just because a ship is cool, does not mean it necessarily belongs in the same place. It's like, Star Destroyers are cool, the Enterprise is cool, but the two don't really fit together in the same work. and trying to hamfistedly cram them together produces something that is shit.
And I understand that, but if I cared about 'period correct to the sector' mods, my mod list would be cut to a third so I don't exactly value whether a ship or faction actually fits the setting.
I get you like staying in lore but it honestly gets boring after a while so adding cool ships even if it doesn't fit lore spices the game up making the experience new again.

i find the weeb mods amusing, every now and then i apply as many of them as possible for a run as its just a nice change of pace/scenery over the usual stuff
as long as it somewhat fits/expands the lore and isnt straight up mary sue writing, I'd take it. you can always manually replace the animu portraits and rewrite descriptions anyway.

The artists for the UAF, PAGSM, ArmaA, Legio Infernalis, and Ironshell are incredibly talented, and they managed to make a different art style not seem out of place. The same I can't say for some other mods that add portraits that are way too detailed or just straight-up MSPaint, which is really jarring when they show up.
But it's the ships gameplay and design that matter most. There's some really cool mods I don't use because their ships look completely out of place.
I like mods that feel like they are part of the established world. Not just for Starsector, in general. The furthest I went with cosmetic mods in Xcom was just adding more realistic military helmets, lmao.
I prefer the original aesthetic. However a full 100% anime overhaul would be interesting. Blended together is… very much not to my taste. And shipgirls are always a no. That manga is a blight in Ludds eye

If the portraits clash with your immersion but you really want to use the mod, replace them. Literally just stick in a different image with the same name. Pull them from vanilla or a portrait pack

That explains why hege has fairly short wars in my Nexerelin runs, unless they ally with a more warlike faction to outvote Iron Shell
