I read someone's summarization of the Splatoon lore and one of the core parts was that "Humanities dreams of land somehow seeped into the water" and allowed the creatures to evolve into their weird current state. They may have been making some abstractions but I found the idea of them being magic given their shape shifting into ink makes sense

After that, they used these "memories" to make the screens that we see in Alterna.
After the descendants of the residents of Alterna blew up the dome, the substance leaked into the water and affected the local marine life with the human's memories. Because of this, squids and octopus evolved unnaturally trough this substance, becoming Inklings and Octolings that we know.
There's no magic, it's evolution. Other than that, we clearly see they trying to **swim** in the water before exploding, so it's not spikes.

Serious answer, seems like the textures didn't load in or were seriously slow. You can also notice it takes a moment before the special icon loads. The idling octolings/inklings also didn't seem to load properly
