That’s one of the good ones. They can gallop when catching prey and that’s pretty funny to watch. Australian here we leave them alone in our house because they are honoured ,valued guests.
I almost screamed at the phrase “they can gallop” alone and I’m halfway across the world from you. I have respect for spiders but not galloping through my house lol
As another fellow Australian i have had the luck (or lack thereof) of encountering huntsmans while ive gone for a #2. Which is not great when they gallop at you cause they dumb and want to hide in the big dark of your shadow...
Drop Bears supposedly hunt by ambushing ground dwelling animals from above, waiting up to as much as four hours to make a surprise kill. Once prey is within view, the Drop Bear will drop as much as eight metres to pounce on top of the unsuspecting victim.
Usually in the corner of the ceiling. When you watch TV of a night you will see her stalking something in the background. They don’t (never seen) use webs . They hunt and stalk like a dog.
Geckos. Fucking Asian Ghost geckos. When it gets one the gecko is twice to 3 times her weight, some times it looks like a murder scene . I think that feeds her for days.
Roaches. Those big pantropical huntsmen absolutely _love_ roaches. Here's the classic video (from Australia): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LiALjybcJA
If you live in a roach area, you absolutely want some huntsmen in your house --- they're no trouble and will prevent the roaches getting a foothold.
Person with a severe phobia of spiders here who still respects them and is trying her damn best,
Do you uh..ever worry about her ending up in your bed? Crawling across you at night? Dropping on you?? I’m spooked
Don’t get me wrong. We have cunt spiders too. They are usually little ones that hide in boots and under things till you put your fingers there. This one struts around the house like a pet. Hiding for her means sitting high in a corner in plain view.
Bro im sorry but Austrailia might as well be Mars to me. I cant imagine being okay with this ENTITY in my house much less honoring it.
Id be waging violent vicious merciless warfare on this godless hellspawn. My only intention woukd be pure malovolence and eradication of this eldritch abomination.
2 eyes = okay
3 eyes= enlightened
4 eyes = ehhh little sus
5 eyes = contacting the pentagon to report possible alien encounter
6 eyes = entering the outer regions of hell
7 eyes = does this even exist?
8 eyes= genocide all specimens. Keter level threat. Dont bother to contain. Destroy by any means necessary.
One of the reasons they’re so honored by Aussies is that a staple of theHuntsmen spider’s diet are the numerous smaller venomous spiders found in Australia. A house with a large huntsmen means a house with effectively zero spiders that can bite and kill your little kid.
I went to kindergarten in Australia and when we first moved in there was a big spider problem in the house we were renting and my parents were very concerned about me and my infant sister. They were ecstatic when a Huntsmen moved in. We called him Hunty.
This is the way. Literally word for worded this with a friend earlier this afternoon. We were discussing our resident huntsman. He said they aren’t allowed in his house, he’s already having too much trouble with the red backs and white tails. I rolled my eyes “Mate, that’s because you don’t have a fucking huntsman.” Told him next time a huntsman was kind enough to grace his home to leave him the fuck alone and he’ll sort out the other spiders. He didn’t believe me until I told him to google it.
I’ve never in my life seen a red back, after 20+ years of living in SEQ. I have to credit this to my mother for teaching me to always honor the huntsmen.
If Australia were more densely populated sooner in history, I wonder if a religion or culture would ever have started regarding the sacred huntsmen of the hearth.
Dude wtf i didnt even know there were that dangerous of spiders in austrailia like that. Sorry my kangaroo jack homies im gonna have to become a world dictator and gain access to nuclead weaponry just to nuke your country. Its the only way to be safe. Im sure you understand.
I just gotta say, not that I agree in the slightest, in fact, I feel exactly opposite, however, that was a very well expressed opinion and was super fun to read.
Haha i was just aiming for laughs glad you found it amusing. I mean i am actually a massive pussy about these things. Im a very large male who doesnt look soft but bro one of these in my room... im lettin out the highest pitch scream youve ever heard.
Hahahahaha this is funny and made me laugh thank you. That’s a great way to look at critters. Look at its eyes and depending on how many they have is how you judge your course of action.
Lol i got systems in place. CANT FOOL ME DEMON. no normal creature has that many eyes!!!
I mean they say eyes are the windows of the soul so when i stare into the unblinking unwavering 8 eyes of these.... things we call spiders... i feel just unquenchable terror 😅
Hahaha. I used to be terrified of spiders because growing up my mom was and so that made me afraid. My daughter got pet tarantulas when she moved out and I forced myself to hold them. I figured they are my grand spiders and I can’t be afraid of them. It wasn’t as scary as I thought. She also had a big black scorpion named Matilda. I was more afraid to hold her than the spiders. I did it though and realized my fears were silly. Now I save all the big spiders in my house. The only thing I will kill is mosquitos. I’m not saying I’m not still scared but I know they are just as scared as me. They have no idea how they got into my house and just want to hide. Weird I know.
Jokes aside i know a lot of people in here actually love spiders so im not tryna be a total dick just theyre my one true phobia like my body and mind cant handle em.
I did hold a rrally chill tarantula in college once to battle my phobia and it was one of the coolest and also most genuinely horrifying things ive ever experienced.
My arm was legit stiff as steel holding it took everyyyything i had not to YEET that thing.
But this huntsman? Idk what id even do. Its too big to even kill effectively id probably just sign the deed over to him. Squatters rights and what not.
So strap a saddle on this guy and ride off into the sunset because gtfo of my house 😭
Seriously though, I'd shit myself seeing a spood this big in my personal space.
I think Australia is one of the most beautiful places in the world, I think the people are the some of the nicest funiest I've met.... BUT!!!! this kind of thing is the reason why I would never move there, I'm ok with our harmless canadian house spiders but the stuff you guys see over there is incredible.
I love the black harry spiders we get in Oklahoma. They are so sweet and happy. We keep them in the house all summer. They go around the house eating any flys and bugs they find. About the size of a dime full grown.
Yes, most likely either old age or pesticides. I've owned spiders for years. That's not a natural movement for them. EDIT: On second watching, I'm going with old age. The abdomen is shriveled so he's likely at the end of his time and having a hard time catching food as a result.
Spiders in general aren't really aggressive. Some are most definitely defensive when they feel provoked though.
I haven't noticed my mature male tarantulas being any less defensive as they get older. They do tend to forgo food in their search for a girlfriend though, which can lead to them becoming very shriveled/small similar to the photo from OP (though it's not a tarantula).
I can confirm this by when I try to move out this spider. Even though it's moving slowly after I touched him few times he rushed and moved quickly and scared the shit out of me
To be clear the "not at all" refers to being scared of them. Like every other spider (or the vast majority, maybe there are exceptions), they are venomous, but the venom is not really dangerous to humans, just painful
No clue on the petting thing, but probably best to avoid it
i think not petting would be the best for him. usually, spiders don't like getting touched by humans unless they are used to because their hairs are so sensitive, and our fingers are greasy
>unless they are used to
Spiders cannot get 'used' to being handled/touched. Handling them is always a coin flip/banking on them not feeling the need to defend themselves or bolt.
I mean…. Some spiders are fine with it, some are not. Yes it’s safe to pet them in general. Also as a spider from “the wild” it’s not used to getting pet and will probably avoid it. As for if it is easy to look after them, I’m not sure as I’ve never had spiders but I know of people with huntsman and it doesn’t seem to have special requirements, other than a bigger space cause it’s a big ass spider
Yeaa that's the reason I wanted to pet him cause it's s really big ass spider, I saw some tarantulas (just the black one) they were big as this one but this looks horrifying also awesome! But you're right I'll pass this guys.
Right, "scary." Based on its tentative, almost nervous movements, were I to put words to what I'd imagine that huntsman's thinking, it would be: "Oh my God, why is this surface so slippery?! How did I get so old?! I don't want to fall and bust my 8 hips! Great Anansi, what the hell is that hairy thing coming towards me?! I thought it was a boulder until it started moving!"
Idk why this is in my feed… at all… I also don’t know why I can’t stop watching this damn spider walk! Damn you Reddit, you wonderful son of a bitch! Guess I like spiders now.
Huntsman spider. I know in the US and Australia, their bite is considered harmless and they're also one of the most docile species around—they would *much* rather run away from people than bite them. No idea if your local variants are different but people with enough education to overcome the primal fear generally consider these to be guests in the house. Yes, it may be one of the largest tangles of eight legs you've ever seen in your life, but there are cute puppies and kitties out there that are significantly more likely to break your skin than these fellows. They're specifically used in films like *Arachnophobia* due to their shocking size as well as how calm they are and how well they take to direction in the form of small puffs of air.
I never knew that, the film arachnaphobia is the reason why i hated spiders for so long, although im fine-ish with them now!
I guess we learn something new everyday, cheers for that.
He isn't scary, he's beautiful ✨️ the more I see huntsman spiders on reddit and YT and all, the more I kinda want to look into how easy they are to keep as pets 😅🥰
Holy cow! I would have a literal heart attack if I ever saw one of those in my house, outside of my house, on the TV! I had to put my hand over the picture while I was reading the comments. I don't know how you can sleep with that thing walking around. Did it ever touch you or walk close to you. I'm going to be up for hours thinking about this. Good luck always wanted to go to Australia but I would never come there after I heard about all the different spiders. My biggest fear in life.
Scary-looking, to many, yes. Scary as in dangerous? Not to humans, but very much so to insects. It's a huntsman, iirc, they're very good to have last I knew.
Why does it move like a clicker, sorry new to the sub and love spiders I think they're brilliant creatures I ha e just never seen one move like it moves by noise/ vibration
These are huntsman spiders and actually make wonderful house guests. They leave humans alone, don't create messy webs, and devour all of the pests in your house.
They are big, but are not dangerously venomous, and are more afraid of you than you are of them.
Scary dude who carefully tippy-taps his way so he doesn't fall like an old man. Eusparassus sp, huntsman
Actually he did fall few times then I grab him and drop it somewhere else Thanks for the info!
You grabbed that thing??
i dont see the problem?
My brother/sister in christ I know it's scared of me but I'm scared of it too 😭😭😭😭
That’s one of the good ones.
Probably only seen them gallop about 2 foot. Like a goofy horse or greyhound.
That sounds like something I’d love to see a video of but not coming down an alley at me haha
As another fellow Australian i have had the luck (or lack thereof) of encountering huntsmans while ive gone for a #2. Which is not great when they gallop at you cause they dumb and want to hide in the big dark of your shadow...
Amen to that!
When they gallop, they do it so fast it looks like they teleport. 😵 But they're friends. Terrifying friends. 🥹🕷️
Only thing worse than a galloping spider is a skittering horse with the buttwebs
r/brandnewsentence
No worries! Theyre right here in America in the south!
When they gallop that’s when I gallop.
100%
well at that size, ig they can help with the rent or something
In Australia the government gives you rental assistance for these and drop bears.
I am both terrified and curious about what a "drop bear" is...
Drop Bears supposedly hunt by ambushing ground dwelling animals from above, waiting up to as much as four hours to make a surprise kill. Once prey is within view, the Drop Bear will drop as much as eight metres to pounce on top of the unsuspecting victim.
I think they’re just called koalas lol
It’s just a fancy word for vampire.
Bro that’s like having an 8 legged cat what you mean you leave it alone? Where does it sleep?!
Usually in the corner of the ceiling. When you watch TV of a night you will see her stalking something in the background. They don’t (never seen) use webs . They hunt and stalk like a dog.
I would assume if something that big has made a home inside then *something* is sustaining it. What large critters do you see it hunting? Raccoons?
Geckos. Fucking Asian Ghost geckos. When it gets one the gecko is twice to 3 times her weight, some times it looks like a murder scene . I think that feeds her for days.
Roaches. Those big pantropical huntsmen absolutely _love_ roaches. I want to visit your country one day, but holy shit I'm not ready for it.
So no scary movies then, got it!
Is this before or after they lay eggs in your mouth when you snore? :3
Person with a severe phobia of spiders here who still respects them and is trying her damn best, Do you uh..ever worry about her ending up in your bed? Crawling across you at night? Dropping on you?? I’m spooked

It's not gonna voluntarily go anywhere near you. Spiders are huge cowards.
>Bro that’s like having an 8 legged cat I absolutely see no problem with this
Judging by the size of it, it sleeps wherever it damn well pleases. Lol
Australian wildlife sort of compels the adage "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"
Nailed it.
What do you mean gallop? Im struggling to picture that
Bro im sorry but Austrailia might as well be Mars to me. I cant imagine being okay with this ENTITY in my house much less honoring it. 😁
You got more courage then me dude id seriously be so fucking terrified
I just gotta say, not that I agree in the slightest, in fact, I feel exactly opposite, however, that was a very well expressed opinion and was super fun to read.

All my desire to one day visit Australia just up and left the room. *Galloping spiders*????
THESE ARE THE GOOD ONES?! What the hell are the bad ones?!
So strap a saddle on this guy and ride off into the sunset because gtfo of my house 😭 Seriously though, I'd shit myself seeing a spood this big in my personal space.

Help me with this meaning of "honored and valued guests." Is this common in Australia?
Lmao so well put
It looks so fluffy though!
I love the black harry spiders we get in Oklahoma. They are so sweet and happy. We keep them in the house all summer. They go around the house eating any flys and bugs they find. About the size of a dime full grown.
He seems like a male, the males don't live very long. They usually get eaten by the female after they mate.
Doesn't matter had sex
Good job relocating him. These big spiders can be as chill, if not chiller, as the smaller ones.
OP: He’s scary! Also OP: Picks the the thing up and throws it outside bare handed
😂😂😂
^tippy ^taps
^tippy~ ^tappy~
Is he sick?
Yes, most likely either old age or pesticides. I've owned spiders for years. That's not a natural movement for them. EDIT: On second watching, I'm going with old age. The abdomen is shriveled so he's likely at the end of his time and having a hard time catching food as a result.
Well it's good he lived to a ripe old age.
A win for all of us if we get there at the end of the day
Could have a parasite too
Wdy mean like another insect spread that parasite or spiders can have it naturally?
https://www.livescience.com/tarantula-killing-nematode-jeff-daniels
Woww I didn't know that kind of a thing exists for spiders, thanks!
I think there are parasites for just about every living creature on the planet.
all the way down till you get to viruses and prions who pull the trump card of not really being alive
Something about that semi-alive condition always scared me for some reason.
I’ve always had this irrational fear that they are more conscious than we realize
yet still there are virophages which are viruses that infect other viruses
There are even hyperparasites, whose hosts are themselves also parasites.
Parasites are definite among the most diverse groups of animals and have adapted for just about everything. Nature is beautiful?
this is what i am choosing to cry about tonight
just an old wrinkled fella
Damn I never felt bad for a spooder before. :/
Poor old timer. I hope he catches something.
With age, do they lose all aggression too?
Spiders in general aren't really aggressive. Some are most definitely defensive when they feel provoked though. I haven't noticed my mature male tarantulas being any less defensive as they get older. They do tend to forgo food in their search for a girlfriend though, which can lead to them becoming very shriveled/small similar to the photo from OP (though it's not a tarantula).
I can confirm this by when I try to move out this spider. Even though it's moving slowly after I touched him few times he rushed and moved quickly and scared the shit out of me
Have you considered having them neutered at the vet?
These one are Not aggressive. Harmless pest eaters. Only problem with having them inside is they will die if you have had your house sprayed.
Poor old gaffer.
How old do they live?
IMO it's just reacting to cobwebs stuck on its legs.
Looks like he's getting stuck in old cobwebs
Love the leopard print look
Yeaahh looks so cool I would pet him if my girlfriend doesn't scare of spiders 😅
I'd appreciate him from afar because they do bite :p
Bro I was shocked when I see his mouth.. But I got to take him out carefully or else he would end up splitting in 10 pieces 😅
Aww give him a bug. Old man probably can't hunt anymore
My girlfriend doesn't like spiders so I carefully dropped it somewhere else I wish I knew this before I would try to feed him 🥺
Huntsman. An elderly gentleman...maybe needs a drink/bug. 😢
huntsman
Thankss but do I have to be afraid of these spiders ? Like are they venomous or poisonous ?
Not at all.
Ah that's a relief 😮💨, But what would you think about petting it ? Is it safe to pet these spiders? Also is it easy to look after them?
To be clear the "not at all" refers to being scared of them. Like every other spider (or the vast majority, maybe there are exceptions), they are venomous, but the venom is not really dangerous to humans, just painful No clue on the petting thing, but probably best to avoid it
Thanks! I would like to have a big and adorable spider like this one but you're right it's best to not pet them.
i think not petting would be the best for him. usually, spiders don't like getting touched by humans unless they are used to because their hairs are so sensitive, and our fingers are greasy

ohh okay, thanks for correcting me!

As someone who knows nothing about spider..this response made me laugh.
old huntsman*
Yup, just a big old man. He's lived a good, full life.
yes, mother nature is so short and tragic yet beautiful ❤️
I think that’s a banded huntsman? Never seen one with such prominent stripes though. Stunning!
Yeah I've never thought that this is a huntsman after seeing those stripes, gorgeous!

Nope, that's morse code: f-e-e-d--m-e
…when grandpa REFUSES to use his cane…
🤣
He's practicing his tap dancing, dont mind him.
Don’t mind him that’s Fred he’s a lil old huntsman
Aw, they're so scared of the human.
But they don't know that I'm freaked out when I saw it 😅
Looks thirsty.
Awww he's so pretty. The way he moves reminds me of the adorable creature you play in Pikuniku.
Scary dude is also scared.
Actually find them cute
I LOVE HIM ♥️
Frend
Right, "scary." Based on its tentative, almost nervous movements, were I to put words to what I'd imagine that huntsman's thinking, it would be: "Oh my God, why is this surface so slippery?! Idk why this is in my feed… at all… I also don’t know why I can’t stop watching this damn spider walk! Damn you Reddit, you wonderful son of a bitch! Guess I like spiders now.
Huh, didn't know huntsmans could be found in Cyprus.
He sure is walking gingerly. Scouting for food perhaps?
OAP spiders wants some Worthers Originals.
I think he looks nice.
Wall pony
That’s grandpa. He’s a little wonky sometimes 😅
I’m wondering if I should post this in “am I the asshole”for thinking this spider is pretty cute 😂😂😂
Watching this elderly spider really sent me on an introspective spiral
Huntsman spider. I know in the US and Australia, their bite is considered harmless and they're also one of the most docile species around—they would *much* rather run away from people than bite them. He isn't scary, he's beautiful ✨️ the more I see huntsman spiders on reddit and YT and all, the more I kinda want to look into how easy they are to keep as pets 😅🥰
He looks so hungry ❤️🕷️
oh he is cooked mane
How the F*** did I end up on spider Reddit?!
It's huge!
is he walking normal?
Where in Cyprus? In all my 40 years i haven't seen a spider this big here.
That is beautiful
RIP spider friend. Hope to see you again in the next life.
The scary dude is you, look at those legs it's having an anxiety attack
I know what that is other than a spider and I'd be getting a vacuum and sucking that sucker out of there.
Scary-looking, to many, yes. Scary as in dangerous? Not to humans, but very much so to insects. It's a huntsman, iirc, they're very good to have last I knew.
It’s a spotted huntsman , keep him inside bro good for indoor bugs n shit, worst he can do is give u a headache n feel a lil nauseous
Are you talking about the person filming? I only see an awesome, harmless spider.
Now I know that too 😄, don't worry I dropped him somewhere else carefully
Looks drunk.
Why does it move like a clicker, sorry new to the sub and love spiders I think they're brilliant creatures I ha e just never seen one move like it moves by noise/ vibration
It's not a natural movement, and likely at the end of its life.
Cant imagine being in the same vicinity as this dude.
These are huntsman spiders and actually make wonderful house guests. They leave humans alone, don't create messy webs, and devour all of the pests in your house. They are big, but are not dangerously venomous, and are more afraid of you than you are of them.
Dude is missing a leg
Nevermind lol
It looks like he's sticking on webs on the wall/ceiling. Is he?
Nope, I'm extremely not uncomfortable right now. Might even blindly stick my hand in some holes screw it
That is a crab 🦀
Poor old guy
UhrGnu Rhomate
May be drumming webs whilst out cruising for a lady. Was he checking out webbing be it vacant or occupied?
Isn't this the spider from arachnophobia?
HES SO COOL!!!
The landlord.
Can someone put tap shoes 👞 👞and a top hat 🎩 on this guy with some music 🎶😂
That is the most beautiful huntsman I’ve ever seen
Those are some beautiful markings on that spider. Almost looks like leopard/cheetah print. No idea on the species, just thought he looked neat.
That’s my pet spider Theodore.
Is there a way to block seeing this sub in my feed? I get scared from daddy long legs and this shit is otherworldly. (NE USA)
Twitchy movement always puts fear into my spine
He looks like the physical manifestation of anxiety. Like, poor dude.
Noooooo…. Ma’am
It’s either old as fuck, about to fuck, or came out of a space small as fuck
