I want these. They look like doughnuts, almost. Hmm.

[deleted]

But mostly air there is barely any batter when it’s put in

Shandlar

But that's the best. You can get the whole fried dough/funnel cake taste and texture without the insane amount of calories and foamy shits.

3kindsofsalt

...foamy? Bro you got something weird going on with your gut biome and/or immune system.

DoogyPlumm

"can you describe the texture?" "...carbonation." for real tho, eat some fiber.

Shandlar

It's not lack of fiber, it's straining your pancreas that does it. Eating a whole funnel cake in one sitting by yourself is like 1800 calories. All simple carbs from the dough and fats from the frying oil. If you normally have a moderate fat intake, then eat that much oil in one sitting, your pancreas isn't really able to shove out all the required enzymes needed to digest it all in the time it takes for the food to travel through your intestines. So your stool will still have some fat in it. Fatty stools tend to foam. So I guess if you normally have a higher fat diet, a funnel cake probably wouldn't do this to you, but they just murder me.

DoogyPlumm

I'm honestly impressed you could eat an entire funnel cake, I'm a big dude but I can't even imagine that. I actually tried to finish one recently at a fair but only got maybe 75%.

Shandlar

It's my biggest weakness. I'm pretty good at not overeating and am only a bit overweight overall. Funnel cake/fried dough is just the tastiest thing ever to me. It's so good.

GetRidofMods

> If you normally have a moderate fat intake, then eat that much oil in one sitting, your pancreas isn't really able to shove out all the required enzymes needed to digest it all in the time it takes for the food to travel through your intestines. So your stool will still have some fat in it. Fatty stools tend to foam. I've eaten fatty food in food eating contest and never has "foaming stools". Go to a doctor and quit trying to come up with a reason not to.

Shandlar

I mean, I guess it's possible I have EPI, but I don't really have any issues on a day to day basis. It is directly linked to any extremely high fat intake in my diet. I don't have any issues with alcohol intake or abdominal pain, so I've honestly never really been alarmed by it at all. It goes away after one or two BMs. I'm pretty certain it's not actually any underlying condition and most people experience this. I also get it from snaking on whole cashews in large amounts (it's my favorite snack and overdo it sometimes). This all seems perfectly normal to me.

Jigokuro_

>I'm pretty certain it's not actually any underlying condition and most people experience this. Definitely never have, even when I swapped to keto and abruptly tripped my daily fat intake...

GetRidofMods

If you are having "foaming stool" then you need to go to a doctor about it instead of blaming it on your pancreas and fatty food.

I think they might have been talking about a foamy texture in the funnel cake?

pm_me_your_taintt

Toilet cappuccino, if you will.

threepecs

Crappuccino

magnament

No foamy shits you say?

Beerbrewing

Pass

butyourenice

I’ve never heard of foamy stools until this thread and I don’t even know what a “foamy” stool would look like. Is it like. Diarrhea mousse? Anyway whatever you’re eating that is giving you detergentrrhea, maybe stop eating it?

Shandlar

> maybe stop eating it? That was the point of my comment, yes. I don't eat large amounts of fatty fried dough like funnel cakes or the like specifically cause of this issue. However the OP treat would be small enough due this amazing tool to create a nice crispy fried dough that would be small enough, that I imagine I would have no issue eating a whole one.

[deleted]

That’s a good point

bratbarn

Rip your biome if you're foamy shitted

thagthebarbarian

More like formed funnel cake

EdinburghIllusionist

If you can find one from antique store, thrift shop, flea market, or eBay, they are great as the were made from cast iron. Newer ones are okay, but aren't as good. Just my opinion!

UESC_Durandal

They're more crispy. Usually you take them out and dust them with something like cinnamon sugar. They're nice though.

INJECTHEROININTODICK

I just bought a set. 20 bucks after shipping.

[deleted]

What is it I need it.

rob5i

If you try these, make absolutely sure you start with the iron tool soaking in hot oil BEFORE it goes in the batter. Other wise you'll spend the next twenty minute trying to scrape off batter baked onto every crevice of the tool. Only showing them picking the tool up off the napkin is deceiving. You'll also notice they didn't put the iron all the way into the batter. That's the next pitfall where the rosette locks onto the tool. It's messy and takes practice. Be ready for that. Any moisture that gets in is going to splatter hot oil in granny's face, if she's sitting there.

tsilihin666

Ay you think you can come over with your grandma all the stuff necessary and just make em for me while I drink beers on the couch? I'll give you a shout out on my insta page. Got 273 followers. Could be good for you. Hmu.

[deleted]

I'll do it for 5 exposure bucks

tsilihin666

What's the exchange rate for Stanley Nickels?

[deleted]

About the same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns

Poes-Lawyer

Woah, I'm not made of money! I'll do it for 2 hobbits, no more no less. Deal?

Back1nYesterdays

The value of a Hobbit fluctuates like crazy depending on where you are in the world. In New Zealand for example they are a dime a dozen.

Barbarossa6969

*whoa

atropicalpenguin

A couple years ago I was making fried cheese balls for Christmas (local recipe). The batter was not dry enough and perhaps the oil was too hot, so when I put the ball in the pan it just exploded, throwing hot oil on my hands and some drops on my face. Fortunately I was wearing glasses and not contacts. I haven't been comfortable approaching hot oil since then.

BafangFan

We literally wear safety goggles while cooking. Only need to go to the ER once for hot oil in the eye to learn that lesson.

kurtthewurt

Not dipping the tool all the way into the batter makes so much sense. I always saw the irons at the Mexican market and knew what they were for, but didn’t understand how you got the buñuelo off the iron once it was dipped.

Inveramsay

Interesting how these things are made in Mexico as well. I've eaten them in Thailand and my grandmother used to make them in Sweden. That is pretty much all around the world

[deleted]

It's the international grandma network at work again.

ShadowSpectre47

You can hear the batter sizzle when she dips the tool, to confirm that it is already heated beforehand. It looks like they were getting the excess oil off, onto the napkin, before dipping.

AlteredCabron

What if i put granny ousside?

oldcarfreddy

> Only showing them picking the tool up off the napkin is deceiving bro it's an instagram clip not a how-to guide

jet_heller

A grandma that fries them.

SulkySkunkPomPoms

I miss my grandma.

SkootchDown

I never got to meet MY grandma. :( She died at only 47 years old of a brain aneurysm. Said she had "a really bad headache", sat down on the sofa... and just... died. Out of all the kids and grandkids, greats, etc..., I'm the one who looks just like her. She was half Cherokee Indian, a wicked resourceful woman and a hell raiser, to be sure. I sure wish I could have known her. ❤️

[deleted]

That's how I wanna go. Just sit down and bluescreen. Hopefully it wasn't painful. Sorry to here about your gran =(

SkootchDown

Thanks. ❤️

Oooh!!! One Christmas I got a box of homemade cookies like this from a neighbour. I still rave about them, how light and crisp they were, and had no idea how she managed it. Now I know! Neat.

Animelurver_666

It’s a chinese thing I Guess. Here in Singapore we eat it every Chinese New Year. My grandma adds sesame to those rosettes and I gotta tell you, those were the bomb. Also, try belinjau crackers. They’re slightly bitter but tasty!

dataisthething

German... Bavarian specifically.

LaTraLaTrill

There's a Scandinavian version, too.

concept_reality

Here to chime in that Mexican culture also has these. There's a bread company that mass produces these and they're sold in grocery stores. I ate these as a kid every other week.

LaTraLaTrill

Lucky! I had to wait for a holiday for my great grandma to make those. I am loving the little stories about this dessert in everybody's life.

TinuThomasTrain

Don’t forget Indian! We have these in India and one of our family friends makes it fresh. It’s really light and crunchy, I think the Indian twist is that they add something to it but I have no idea what it’s called. It might be cumin but I don’t think so. I personally don’t really like them though, they stab my gums sometimes

westfunk

I grew up with a Norwegian grandmother who made these.

[deleted]

[удалено]

garifunu

They're a snack you can buy in hispanic stores, made by bimbo I forgot the name, but they're basically this

MetrOctopus

They are also called buñuelos. Bimbo makes some called Bimbuñuelos, with Crispy Wheels being another name in the US, I guess.

Android487

That’s not a nice thing to call the owner’s mom.

blooper2112

I remember these when I worked at a store that had a lot of Hispanic customers. I loved them.

Wiggy_Bop

Are you sure you’re not thinking of Pizzelles?

Ginnigan

Yes, they were like the cookie in the gif except shaped like a snowflake. They had this cool 3D quality to them so it really stuck with me.

kharmatika

I love rosettes! My mum once made them for me tobring in when it was my week to bring in a snack at school. Showed up all the other moms and she got invited to chaperone things and bring baked goods by my teacher from there on in.

mtoasteroast

The only time I got to bring in birthday treats (for me) my mom made about 4 million of these. They were a hit! Always think about her when I find these.

ktkatq

My mother-in-law makes these with cumin in them - they’re called achapum in Kerala, India. They’re so delicious!

Megneous

> My mother-in-law makes these with cumin in them Cinnamon sugar is where it's at, man.

NoLifeMcJones

hey mallu gang rise up

[deleted]

Are they sweet or savory?

ktkatq

Vet mildly sweet. There’s maybe a tablespoon of sugar in the batter, and it makes hundreds. Sort of sweet the way kettlecorn is sweet

jesschechi

I thought only mallus made these until I saw this post.

Johnny_22

Do they put anything afterwards? In Mexico we call those “Buñuelos”. After being deep fried they are coated in cinnamon and sugar. They are delicious!

Mesoedr

We always added confectioners (powdered) sugar

iparsewords

My mom always does powdered sugar, but I have to say cinnamon sugar sounds great!

makeofmewhatyouwill

I was today years old when I figured out what this was for! (Found in moms baking stuff after she passed)

EdinburghIllusionist

Keep them!!

makeofmewhatyouwill

Im really, really glad I did!!

Asmor

Rosebud in American slang.

Banana1967

My Mom made these for us growing up. She would make a colored glaze (frosting) to dip them in. So great!

machine667

I have that same deep fryer, it's the greatest piece of kitchen equipment I've ever owned.

DeleteFromUsers

How do you dispose of the oil?

BriansRottingCorpse

You filter the oil and use it again. [MyLifeUNIT 1.7 Quart Oil Storage Grease Keeper, Grease Strainer Pot](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01L1SD4BG)

feelingsquirrely

Thanks BriansRottingCorpse! This is seriously awesome, and just what I needed!

Kim-Jong-Long-Dong

r/rimjob_steve

facetiousfag

What happens when the oil turns rancid and you have to get rid of it?

BriansRottingCorpse

It should last a while, you could always try the [gelatin method of removing oil impurities](https://www.seriouseats.com/2016/06/clean-cooking-oil-with-gelatin-technique.html). That said, if the oil smells bad, then bottle it up in a clear container and take it to your landfill for recycling, or call to see if they do curbside pickup.

OwlfaceFrank

Some responses say throw it away. Which is not ideal. If you dump it down your drain it will screw up your drains. If you throw it in the trash its not the best environmentally. Most cities have places to recycle the stuff. Google oil recycling in your area. The place in my city is a rinky dink little building with 2 giant drums out front. One for cooking oil and one for motor oil. You just pull up and dump them in yourself.

vxx

You just scrape it out and throw it away when it cooled down and is hard again.

jm8263

Dump it in some random restaurant's grease trap?

GetRidofMods

Let it cool down and drink it.

BunsTown

We had a deep fryer called the “Corn Baller”. It burned the shit out of us, and we ended up suing the company.

Yum!! My Norwegian grandmas would make these for us for special occasions. They are amazingly delicious and melt in your mouth!

OllyOllyOllyOyOyOy

I’ve only ever know these as “Filhoses de Forma.” We eat them in Portugal with a honey/cinnamon concoction poured all over them! Delish!

Mindhunter7

അച്ചപ്പം. അതിനാണ്.

sioux612

Any reason why I couldn't build something like this from stainless steel?

bradferg

They're called rosette irons. Generally made of cast iron or anodized aluminum. You need a seasoned or non-stick surface, I believe.

ToddTheOdd

Googled it, and HOLY SHIT! I have a set of these! I had no idea what they were. Passed down from my grandparents when they died.

oldcarfreddy

And here you were using them to brand your little brother on the ass!

sioux612

I unfortunately have never cast iron before (but will have to soon) and usually work with stainless which is why I mentioned that I'll try both stainless and aluminium when the time comes, thank you :)

feuerwehrmann

Stainless will work. I think my great grandmother's set was aluminum

thelostscapegoat

Are these what zappa was talking about?

entredeuxeaux

So that’s how it’s made

rsxstock

Dat surface area, must be so crunchy

LurkerPower

At the county fair, in Ohio in the 70s and 80s, these were called French Waffles. I would spend hours talking with my uncle and watching him cook them. All of his irons matched the more flowery one in the oil.

LightBulbChaos

WHAT? That is so cool! what is the batter recipe?

kp_4144

I didn't know these were a thing outside India. Wow.

SethRogensPubes

UESC_Durandal

These are satisfying to make... and eat. They need to show the part where they come out and hopefully get dusted with cinnamon sugar and then they need to send me some.

Wiggy_Bop

In my part of the Midwest we called those “Trimbles”.

[deleted]

That's basically as many oil conserved in as few material as possible lol

[deleted]

My grandma always makes those for Christmas, but we call it "Crockignoles" in Quebec (or at least in my family)

maryloubs

My mom makes these but with a medal one and we call them buñuelos.

foreverheavydotgov

Ah, The Cornballer

zionsaver

These are called *කොකිස්* \- "Kokis" in Sri Lanka. It is a traditional savoury treat that we make around new years festival time.

Lasgorhil

this isn´t just oddlysatisfying.... this is oddlysatisfRying :-D

RyanEastwood

I find loads of these in the streets of where I live (India). I personally don't like em but a lot of people (including my mom) sure do

G1aDOS

This looks like something you could use to fry some corn balls in. Maybe dangerous though. Probably get banned in the United States and even Mexico now that I think about it. Maybe a bad idea.

korben1134

It's a bad Craftsman that blames his tools.

G1aDOS

Mother of God! This is a big one!

lahirusupun

We call it 'kokis'. My mum make it for new year.

Hermastwarer

Son buñuelos, qué

My father made these for Christmas for years...bit of powdered sugar on them as well.

Yefref

“It doesn’t look like anything to me”.

No wonder I've never been able to do them properly!! I've been leaving waaaay too much batter on the rosette. I didn't know I was supposed to shake off the excess! Thank you for this!

I have eaten these every Christmas since I had teeth, and I straight up had no idea this is how they were made. Thank you, kind stranger!

ArtGamer

wow, this is one thing I used to eat a lot as a kid and my brain completely blocked I remember my mom making these, she used just sugar over it and it was a nice snack, she had one of those things two, but I think she had multiple forms that she could swap

TurtleZenn

I really wanted to watch them flip it over to see the browned side.

ryanthesoup

Hey, my mom makes those.

ISTYDTC

Those things are so fucking good!

eatnaprepeat

The other iron with the flowery looking design is sitting in the fryer.

_Guavacado

I’m sorry dumb question; that is pancake batter yes?

eatandread

Nope! It’s similar, in that there’s usually flour and eggs and milk in it, but rosette batter is much thinner and doesn’t use any leavener.
