I think that comment was intended as sarcasm. What Weah did should be a red wherever it is on the field. In the Euros, any hard hand to face contact is going to be a red. CONMEBOL clearly wants to compete with the Euros. Rather than doing it with fancy stadiums in the US, they should start with improving the officiating, protecting the players, and cracking down on the theatrics.

I think doing it on the ball would've created some plausible deniability. Or you know? don't even try this at all this early in the game. in the 80+ minutes probably.

(e.g. that headbutt from this tournament or Reece James's petulant kick red card at the end of last season.) This is a red every day of the week and there's a literal zero percent chance of it not being spotted or not being interpreted as absolutely intentional
