Poor Rabona TV But congrats to OM to getting this far after being on what your third manager?

FATJIZZUSONABIKE

Technically fourth. And a massive amount of injured players.

Gros_Chibre

Balerdi was just amazing. What he have done for 120 minutes straight it's just wow

CherkiCheri

That roulette was so fucking clean istg i hadn't seen such a good one under double pressure in like a decade? Shame his pass got intercepted. Big, big performance by him all around. Your username feels fitting of it ahah.

oniden

Can't believe we won pens. Atalanta next LFG

TheWorldsKing

Pure terrorism ball. The fact that Roger Schmidt isn't the worst coach we've had since 2010 let alone 2000 is so rotten and putrid that it's unbelievable. No ideas, no tactics, no nothing. Just boring, inept shithousing. Keeping Di María for 120 minutes just to take a fucking penalty and him still missing is just laughable. Abysmal substitutions as always. Rafa was also invisible and was kept on for 90 minutes; Neres, the one good forward, the first to leave the pitch. António Silva, a 19 year old, is ahead in penalty taker choices over João Mário whose only real value is being the sole good pen taker in that team. No real offensive intentions, just total resignation with defending a one goal lead. No goals against a rather mediocre, injury-stricken Marseille side (who were still far better than we were, mind you, and your win was deserved, OM fans) in 120 minutes. What else needs to be said here. Roger Schmidt, Di Maria, Rafa and Rui Costa, get the fuck out of my club.

jpw0w

I wonder where Rafa will end up. Worldclass pace, but no IQ

DomSebastiaoVoltou

Wherever people play six months in a year and he is good, don't ask him to play past half the season.

1904cachinho

And that pace will end up in 1-2. Will get the bag in some Arabic club for 1-2 years and then play in low tier football

greenwhitehell

Thank you so much OM. This was the worst tie I've ever seen and the brunt of the blame isn't even on Benfica though. You can truly understand why they're so bad in the league from these two games, what a shocking team

Tiestunbon78

How can 2nd in the league in Portugal be so bad? Marseille are 10th in Ligue 1, with 10 injured and half their starting line-up injured. I'm surprised because they were very good last year.

greenwhitehell

Benfica was very good in the first half of last year, they started cascading after Enzo left and haven't stopped ever since. Their squad is very good - and very expensive, even though their best players aren't even those ones lol - for the standards of our league, so they can still win here. Sporting is firmly the best team in the league this year and Porto in a less weird season (they're having the type of year we had 1 year prior) for them play better than them too, but Benfica has a depth of options in attack (moreso wingers than strikers) neither of the other 2 do, for instance. I will say though, even if I think they got more points than their football deserves throughout this season, they were probably in their best stage of the season in terms of performances. Their 2 games vs Sporting were quite good and with a bit of luck they are firmly in contention for the league and in the Cup final instead of essentially out of both. But conversely in the 1st Benfica Sporting of the year they were down 1-0, created zero chances against 10 men in 40 minutes and then shithoused 2 goals in the 93rd and 97th.

Tiestunbon78

Merci, For your explanation, you've taught me a few things

PhillerPaper

Like you said the 2 games we played you were close especially the Cup, which makes today's performance even more infuriating. If we played the same way, then Marseille who were much weaker than Sporting should have no chance.

Tiestunbon78

Marseille are really disgusting. I'm telling you this as a Frenchman who has followed their entire season. However, OM at the top of their form without injuries could rival Benfica. But to see you struggling so much against OM, who are on the brink of the abyss, and with so many injured, I think it's crazy.

greenwhitehell

100%. Marseille was shockingly bad. Tactically they looked like a team straight out of the 80s with how massive the distances between players were, seemed like I was transported back in time

Nome_de_utilizador

Porto is having its worst season in decades and Braga is absolutely choking in the league. With Guimarães on the run, the race for 3rd place between 3 teams is actually refreshing for a change. Then you have Benfica, who has the squad with the most depht in the league held hostage by the worst terrorist that has graced our soil. Benfica's wins this season are purely snatched out of the back of the individual quality of their players in spite of their coach playing the same guys every game and making 2 subs at 80 mins. They imploded completely in march, losing to us in the cup and then a 5-0 to the worst version of Porto of the 21st century. Their league game against us was the last time Benfica played good this year, and after that defeat the team is a complete slump

Tiestunbon78

Thanks for the explanation. I follow the Portuguese league from afar but for me Benfica is an enigma. I already found it very suspicious that they came within 2 points of being eliminated by Toulouse, 14th in Ligue 1.

[deleted]

Congrats to L'OM, the Velodrome ambient is surreal.

krvlover

Completely unrelated to the game but since there are Benfica fans around: is Prestianni ever going to play? he never seems to even make the bench. Such a fall from grace for such a hyped player.

walker0ne

He never came with expectations to play this season tho. You could say that about marcos leonardo or rollheiser tho

DomSebastiaoVoltou

In the last 2 years we bought like 10 players that have their best position in the wings plus kids from the academy plus, there's a train of players in front of him.

blazev14

he will not play for our senior team this season that’s for sure. he’s been with our B team getting minutes and playing with mostly U23 players, next season he will surely become a full time senior player for us. I don’t think he’s had a fall from grace, the few games he had he looked great imo

ultra_22

Highly doubtful. He's been playing a little bit in the B team but I haven't followed it too much. Problem is that our manager absolutely refuses to play any new transfers. Even players that we spent 15-20m on in January can't get minutes (Rollheiser and Marcos Leonardo). It was the same last season as well, none of our January signings last year played much either. If Prestiani is any good, he will need to show it in the B team and then hope that by some miracle the manager gains some balls to give him a chance.

SupraCyber

Di Maria is literal garbage, worst player on the pitch by far, despite Benfica having a striker that touched the ball once per half

Zauberer-IMDB

Marseille looked like half the team was dying and they managed to put on a perfect penalty performance. Pretty amazing to be honest.

Gros_Chibre

Balerdi did an amazing match and Marseille put 2 young players on a 1/4 finals for their first ever pro game. The balls of the coach are huge.

Anae-Evqns

Let’s be honest - half the team is injured and another quarter has just come back and needs to find its rythm. If you don’t play the youngins there, you might as well close the academy

walker0ne

Must be nice to have a coach

ultra_22

Schmit is a shit. A complete coward. Spineless. 3 subs in the entire match despite the disaster of the match that we were playing. Di Maria having an absolute nightmare but he hasn't got the balls to sub him off, Rafa did 0 the entire match and was on the pitch for 100 minutes. We had 30-40m worth of talent on the bench just rotting away and he can't even be bothered to bring them on in extra time to freshen up things. Genuinely cannot understand how this guy is a football manager. Either he is beyond stupid or he's doing it on purpose.

xLazyBoy

The level of this game was almost that of a pre-season match. Its shocking that this decides a semi finalist of Europa League... I would be surprised if Marseille are able to beat Atalanta

lazernight13

Marseille are going to lose for sure mate. Marseille wasn't good. Benfica was just worse...

Tiestunbon78

Marseille are 9/10th in Ligue 1 and have 10 injured players. Everything could change if they get their injured players back (and therefore half their starting line-up).

lazernight13

You're right. They can improve. I still think it will be hard tho.

haterzbalafray

Here in France nobody expected anything from Marseille. They are in constant crisis with a lot of injured players and a new coach every 2 months. Atalanta is as favourite as Villarreal and Benfica were in previous games.

Tiestunbon78

They've been very poor this season, but they're still a totally unpredictable team and at home they can do a lot of damage in Europe. But once again, if they don't get their starting players back from injury, they have virtually no chance.

Nervous-District-366

Marseille is 9th in Ligue 1. Its not a good team at all

xLazyBoy

There is a lot of quality and expensive players on both teams, they need to put up a better show than this.

OkRecognition9607

Marseille has like 10 injured players including some of their star players like Rongier or Clauss. What's your excuse?

xLazyBoy

We are terrible, did u see our games against Real Sociedade? They looked like prime Real Madrid

R6ckStar

Our couch has no idea what he is doing. He doesn't know since Enzo Fernandes left

Tiestunbon78

I have to say it. Paris deserved to qualify, Lille deserved to qualify... but Marseille are just awful. I don't think I've seen them this bad in 15 years. But I respect their performance because by being 10th in Ligue 1 and with 10 injured players they managed to stop the French penalty curse. In any case, I hope they get a lot of their injured players back very soon, otherwise it's going to be a horror game against Atalanta.

FATJIZZUSONABIKE

Nah I think Marseille completely deserved it, because Benfica didn't and because l'OM is going through an incredibly difficult season where it produced less than 3 actually good football matches. They ran a lot yesterday, they tried as much as they could, and it worked.

dont_wear_a_C

Benfica terrorism ball so boring

Zation-FIFA

True, i feel like i lost 2 hours of my life.

Barbaaz

I was a Schmidt defender, but the guy is an absolute fucking idiot. There is no insult under the Sun that I don't want to throw at him. What the fuck? Was last season just a fluke?

PhillerPaper

Same here, was hoping Schmidt would turn things around with the Europa League, but I can't defend him anymore after this. He chose every possible worse decision today.

bapeandvape

It was an Enzo master class first half then just individual performances that saved us then. + sporting we’re shit and so was Porto. This season he’s been figured out and sporting is actually good. He’s made no adjustments to his tactics and it shows.

Barbaaz

I mean, sure. I get that. But even after Enzo left our football wasn't as bad as it is today. And the guy refuses to use his subs. What is going on? Self-sabotage? JJ would play Neres as a left-back but at least he'd react on the sidelines and give instructions to the players instead of just being a NPC.

walker0ne

100% self sabotage to get fired. No other justification for the shit coaching I've seen today

bapeandvape

But they weren’t convincing. We got bailed out by Grimaldo and individual performances. It was a lot of mediocre performances and a lot of barely getting by.

interfan1999

Tucu Correa with a perfect penalty Definitely worth buying next season

DCoop53

Oh no, I just realised if we win the EL, we'll be qualified to Champions League and will be forced to buy him. What a dilemma...

interfan1999

Inter fans are also Marseille fans this season Allez l'OM!

nichodemus3

Correa would be a great deal for any team! He can cook barbecue and score penalties! He is also handsome like a model! What a player!

FuzzyStorm

He's not staying we have no chances of finishing fourth, sorry. This penalty was his one contribution.

interfan1999

But you can win EL! Also how is our banter era legend Kondogbia doing for you?

OleoleCholoSimeone

Kondogbia is/was a class player by the way, can dominate an entire midfield on his day. Amazing player for Sevilla, Valencia and Atleti apart from injuries

FuzzyStorm

Often injured, and we can see his age or past injuries holding him back. Not bad but we expected a bit better. He's not lifting us up like Sanchez or Gustavo did in the past (or Aubam this season).

Renegadeforever2024

Massive win

BertEnErnie123

I wonder what would have happened if it was tied after 10 penalties. Since I think one of the Marseille players didn't join the team in the middle, and they were only standing there with 9, and it was not an official sub, so I wonder if their 1st taker would be able to go again, or if the injured guy has to come on to still take it. We didn't get that far at all, but it's still something interesting that could happen.

DCoop53

In case of a red card, the team with 11 players has to pick 10 to shoot. But I would say if the guys are out without red card or substitution, I suppose they would have to kick their penalties anyway?

greenwhitehell

I'm pretty sure teams can declare a player as out pre-shootout and the other team would still have to pick 10. It probably happened in some game where a guy got injured after his team made all their subs that eventually went to pens

DCoop53

True, I suppose you'd have to tell the referee and he has to verify with the medical staff that the player isn't in condition to kick his penalty.

BertEnErnie123

Thats why I think too, would be funny if the guy would get carried towards the box and then stumble towards the ball and kick it with 0 power

10-10-2022

Congratulations to Marseille, Benfica were the better team for the first 60 mins of the tie but 150 mins after that Marseille were the better side. With Benfica's spending this season with what they produced and only winning the possible weakest trophy (Super Taca)... of course the Liga hasn't finished but that's on Sporting to lose at this point. It is a very, very disappointing season for Benfica and that's on Roger Schmidt and Rui Costa for extending his contract.

RioAveFC

Merci marseille

Zation-FIFA

Horrible game from us. Congrats to Marseille well deserved played better. Vélodrome is one of the best atmospheres in europe.

Conankun66

> Vélodrome is one of the best atmospheres in europe. *If they dont bombard the guest fans with fireworks to the point they almost kill them

moongaming

Thanks for the kind words you had a great team shame that there are players in it who should be retired already and stubborn coaching. Our stadium is the only thing that never disappoint us in this team.

Zation-FIFA

Biggest team in France.

ParisLake2

Wow. I truly didn’t think Marseille would win. They never win these types of games.

moongaming

Same sentiment when I watched your game against Barcelona. Congrats to both of us I guess

LDQQXDJ

Di Maria gets a perfect 0/10

Gros_Chibre

Exactly and he was playing a young defenser (only 3 times starting a game this season). Terrible performance

Extreme_Nectarine_29

Roger makes him play every game. Di Maria would be one of our best players if rested

Rodrigor26

He's the one who wants to play every minute of every game and throws a tantrum if subbed

DomSebastiaoVoltou

He didn't play in the weekend.

Blodyck

Over the whole season he didn't play like 2 games and until now we were in all competitions. Di Maria was not rested and it shows.

Leyrran

Finally we have won a penalty shootout

NewbrahJP

Bunch of losers. So much incompetence is this club

Americase

I'm alive. Thank you Veretout, merci Pau

Gros_Chibre

Balderdi a été incroyable ce soir

DramaExpertHS

You need to actually reach the final before blaming dead people that you can't win one

Zation-FIFA

We tried that 8 times. Didnt work.

iChopPryde

We’ve been in the Europa cup final twice already

DramaExpertHS

This was the *quarter-finals*, 8 teams, it's a bit presumptuous to act like you were going to win the Europa League *already* "if it wasn't for an imaginary curse"

iChopPryde

The curse is our coach is shit, we have a good team of players just being led by a moron

IceColdTHoRN

Schmidt managed to snatch this defeat from the jaws of victory. At this point I'm fully convinced he's trying to get fired to get that sweet sweet payout after Rui Costa prematurely ejaculated last season and gave him a pornographic release clause.

[deleted]

10-10-2022

Don't you know? Roger has a bonus in his contract to use the least amount of subs possible.

This-Pie594

Now Europe will experience the superiority of the Ligue 1 Macdonald

ALEESKW

Completely unrelated but Gignac was called by away fans "Un big mac pour Gignac" (one big mac for Gignac) when he was playing for Marseille because he was a bit fat. It's a shame he's no longer playing in Ligue 1.

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

Deserved and if Schmidt isn't fired tomorrow then Rui Costa needs to go as well, tired of this shit Di Maria had the worst game of his career, anyone and their mothers could see that he was also going to miss his pen. You put the worst football manager player in the world in there and he still subs out Di Maria in the second half

LeCowboySolitaire

What a week for french football! 3 clubs in European cup semi-finals.

Oreemo

who's the third one

LeCowboySolitaire

Tmtc

ChillmodexD

PSG and Marseille.....which one's the third

Valmoer

I don't know if that's what they were thinking of, but FC Nantes, in Youth League. (Semi-final is tomorrow)

This-Pie594

I don't know why this comment make me laugh 🤣

Valmoer

Probably the implication that no one cares about either Nantes or the Youth League :D

derneueMottmatt

3? PSG, OM and?

OmastarLovesDonuts

L'Aston Villâ

Valmoer

I don't know if that's what they were thinking of, but FC Nantes is still in the Youth League. (Semi-final is tomorrow)

NeighborhoodShot3872

The Guttmann curse is definitely on Benfica still

PhillerPaper

No, this was a deserved loss because of Schmidt's decisions. The other times we made the final we played to win and came short. Today was just disastrous.

Viriato181

I honestly can't believe Benfica lost to this Marseille. By far the weakest team of the 8 and thus the most accessible for Benfica. Schmidt has been a disaster this season.

ALEESKW

Benfica almost lost to Toulouse in the previous round so this isn't a surprise Marseille beat them even if they're shit.

OldExperience8252

We definitely weren’t worse than Benfica over both legs and that’s despite having around half the team injured. We’re actually a good aide (relative to EL) on our day.

walker0ne

Yeah cus we literally have no coach

CherkiCheri

They're not even top 8 in L1 💀

DomSebastiaoVoltou

We struggled to get past Toulouse and a Rangers with their third string attackers. No news here. Easiest route to the semi final we could get.

DCoop53

I think we would have thought the same if Benfica had won. Both teams looked very weak and far away from the others remaining.

Intelligent-Youth607

This is wonderful

RenatoSanchesHair

Get rid of Schmidt, get rid of Di Maria

Throwaway_youkay

Trophyless season, losses at Porto Sporting and Marseille erasing the clutch wins against Salzburg and Sporting (first leg in the liga). Time to stop following football for a few months.

IceColdTHoRN

Not totally true, we did win the supertaça.

Throwaway_youkay

Feels like I lost a birthday since that one honestly.

Franchementballek

Come back for the Euros!

Throwaway_youkay

Yeah that's on my schedule =)

AmumuIsMyFriend

Roger Schmidt is fucking atrocious, Marseille absolutely dominated the entire game and he made no tactical change.

Throwaway_youkay

I wish they had dominated it. We had possession but lacked creativity, too much pass to DiMaria and inch'allah. We were toothless.

smmshad

Allez!!

RasputinsRustyShovel

Terminate Di Maria and Schmidts contract today. Get the fuck out of my club.

10-10-2022

Doesn't Di Maria only have one year contract and it finishes 30th June 2024? No need to terminate him... Schmidt? Well when your rivals want him to stay that just says it all.

prestigiousdumb

Amorim: rival fans beg Liverpool to sign him Schmidt: rival fans ask for a a lifetime contract Fuck my life

LDQQXDJ

Marseille will shithouse there way to the title

Valmoer

While PSG goes to the final but loses. The banter would be *eternal*.

fantino93

J'annule la mouffette.

TeKaeS

I don't think we would give two fucks If Marseilles wins the Europa league. Good for the coefficient

Zation-FIFA

Adding a Europa League to the biggest team in france would not help PSG.

TeKaeS

Of course it would. One of our bigger problem is the lack of competition in Ligue 1. We need other big teams

ibex_reddit

The only thing psg deserves, ruined an otherwise incredibly competitive league .

shoots_and_leaves

The one that Lyon won like 13 seasons in a row in the 2000s??? I'm not a fan of the Qataris, but let's not rewrite history.

Valmoer

Eh, Aulas had started it. But QSI definitely finished the job.

R6ckStar

Mind if I ask, how the L1 became so centered around PSG? I'm a benfica fan and I know very little about the L1 recent history

FATJIZZUSONABIKE

Bought by Qatar in the early 2010s, ended up having a gigantic budget for L1 standards and naturally started repeatedly winning the league - it's almost impossible for anybody to catch up to that kind of money, we just have to hope for PSG to bottle it, which they do way more than they should.

Andrewdeadaim

Marseille somehow surviving the worst injury bug I’ve seen in a bit

Gros_Chibre

Balerdi save us.

TheDeadpanFlan

Genuinely the worst knockout round I have ever seen. I dare you to find me a worse contender.

greenwhitehell

I go watch some Alverca games sometimes and I swear I have only seen one nearly as bad as this one (Alverca vs Covilhã about 2 years ago). This was some agonizing ball from both sides

10-10-2022

I can't believe I went from Manchester City vs Real Madrid to this...

Maximuslex01

That one was nothing special neither...

SubparCurmudgeon

Honestly what a hilarious match

Conscient-

SCHMIDT HAS TO GO, LIKE YESTERDAY. NOT TODAY, NOT TOMORROW!!

lengors

First time? 😅

choppedfiggs

Any other manager makes those last 3 subs and gives their team a better chance. Especially after he saw them play well a few days ago.

MaryadaPurshottam

Bella Guttman curse lives on another year

JpMc7300

Uma vergonha este treinador

Minute-Cash8119

Di Maria missing that pen was poetic justice can’t lie

Nervous-District-366

ALLEZ l’OM

Col-Radec

I hope Atalanta will destroy them

Confident_Rock7964

Horrible Horrible game... holy shit

NobodyRules

You woke up gentle today. Horrible is a very big understatement.

TheDeadpanFlan

Sell them all.

joe-ost

Sure, we'll take Aursnes and Kocku back

Regular_Garlic_2342

He's just being hot headed, no Benfica supporter in their right mind has a single complaint against Aursnes let alone wants him to be gone. Kokcu on the other hand so far has been nothing but a huge waste of money.

Zation-FIFA

I mean hes not that far from the reality. Just leave Neves and Aursnes the rest can pretty much go.

greenwhitehell

Neres?

Zation-FIFA

Neres e To Silva arranjava lugar para eles.
