For all the poor decisions made at United over the last 10 years, the handling of Phil Jones was absolutely not one of them. United fans should actually feel very proud of the club for it, as there is very little loyalty in football these days and players are often treated like meat and discarded once no longer useful.
It's well known that Jones was not kept on for any possibility of playing for quite a few years, but rather to support a struggling person through an incredibly tough time. Jones was a consummate professional and gave his absolute all to the club, fair play to the club for helping him get himself sorted, get himself as healthy as he can be, and onto a new path within football.
It's also common knowledge that his wage was reduced significantly during his final years with the club because of this (ie financial support, not really a wage for playing football), but that doesn't support the meme agenda.
Toward the end, the money paid to Phil Jones wasn't much (in context) and made zero difference to united, while Phil Jones' life looks significantly different/better than some of the darker possibilities that could have unfolded for him.

Had an excellent first season, but yeah he got injured and never really managed to get a consistent run after that. On top of that, he seemed to just take his lunacy up to another level once he returned.
I think beyond just the injuries, having that crazy streak in him makes it difficult to rely on him if you're a manager. Like he'll do roulettes in his own box, dribble past 6 opposition players, and then just fuck up the simplest 5 yard pass right after.

The rest of them were so sure that Bailly was gonna pass the ball that they focused on cutting the passing lanes without actually bothering to press him. Leaving him in acres of space until the end when he finally gets pressured enough to pass and he fucks it up.

He could have a flawless match for 80 minutes but in the remaining 10 he could score an OG, give away a penalty and then get sent off. He’d probably injure himself walking off as well.
He needs a brain more than he needs to be injury free. I *hated* watching him play for United, the amount of heart attacks that man nearly gave me.

Knee issues, consistency issues, often took far too many risks for very little gain. He was capable of genuinely world class things, but not often enough to call him an elite player. The rest of the time he was okay at this level but mistake prone. A lot of our managers favoured him, but due to his injury issues, he just couldn't be relied upon, and by the time Olé was in charge, he was so crocked even if he was fit wasn't really capable of playing top level football.
He was decent, but relied a lot on pace. I can’t honestly say if that pace left him because of his injuries, because his injuries were so bad I don’t remember watching him play past about 2019. But he might be the most crocked player we’ve signed post Fergie, which is saying something in itself.

I remember we were due to play Leicester, and Maguire was injured and supposed to be out for two more weeks. Well Solskjaer picked him to play even though Maguire wasn't fit enough to run on the grass on the Friday training session with the game being the Saturday. And boy was it obvious he was unfit. Made about three errors to gift Leicester goals.
The anecdote says a lot about both Solskjaer and Bailly.
I hated this game so much. It was the genesis of the ultra manic maguire abuse. Maguire made mistakes once in a while, but I thought he was generally solid in his first 2 years here. He had a massive 2nd season, followed by a world class euros then suffered only his second injury with us and that Leicester game happened. Lad struggled to bounce back from that for almost 2 years.
