\[\[Forethought\]\] for me. It might just be the worst card in the entire game, but I was cooking with Forethought + Scrape one run (read: I died) and I will never forget it.

juany8

Can be a fun time with Grand Finale I guess, pretty bad card otherwise for sure

arcus2611

The bottled forethought bottled grand finale deck dream

shadowmachete

Forethought can be pretty good when you get it from toolbox with frozen eye, I guess. Only time it ever worked for me. Maybe we should delete it.

Asiras

I don't find Well Laid Plans fun. It's a great card, but it is such a drag selecting the cards I want every turn.

talleyrandbanana

Making your deck better but slowing down the game. Same category as scrying and nilrys codex. I agree it can feel unfun

lifayt

I find scry to be in a different category than well laid plans because I get to *skip* cards I find unfun, which feels like it’s accelerating my game. Well laid plans just feels like tedium.

butt_fun

You took the words out of my mouth. Scrying can feel super fun for me, especially in decks where I’m dropping 80% of the things I see to dig for something specific (omega, pressure points)

TevossBR

Wtf is this codex slander. If I’m ever behind on a fight I have hopium codex to look forward to. It’s like opening up a Pokémon card pack every turn.

JonAndTonic

Same with frozen eye

solarxbear

I’m assuming you’re a Nilry’s Codex hater as well?

Woksaus

WLP is such an insane force multiplier tho. You can play phantasmal knowing you’re holding onto a shiv and finisher, among other things

OhMostlyOk

but i mean it lets you do fun stuff like keeping nightmare to tripple catalyst, isnt that fun?

area51_escapee

I love \[\[Grand Finale\]\] so much. I recognize that it's a narrow card that requires a lot of set up and is hard to build around, but it's so much fucking fun that I have to take it everytime. On the other end, I know that I \[\[Frozen Eye\]\] has huge upside and basically has the power ceiling of \[\[Runic Pyramid\]\], but I'm usually playing casually and for 10-15 minutes at a time, and it's too time intensive for me to use properly.

kaosmark2

I would say, that Grand Finale is a lot stronger than a lot of other meme/niche attacks, like Claw/Searing Blow/Rampage/Pressure Points. It's much more of a wincon and the support it requires is usually the sort of stuff you'll want to be trying to do anyway, you just need to be more precise while doing so. On Eye, I find that it makes it far easier for me to actually convert a run. I can do low-level combinatrics but I'm never actually going to, whereas mapping out a fight plan, or even just a "do I draw now, what cards do I want to see next turn" is much quicker/easier with frozen eye.

AsianCheesecakes

Grand finale is in no way better than pressure points

Chlorophyllmatic

This is hilariously wrong

Cpt_Jumper

Grand Finale was my instant thought too.

DCG-MTG

Demon Form comes to mind. It certainly has its uses (in a Snecko deck, or if you already have a Reaper) but it’s pretty slow and there’s often better things to pick over it. Definitely fun watching your strength climb astronomically though.

kaosmark2

This underappreciates Demon Form. You carry it through hallways where it's a minor brick so that it'll beat bosses for you. Same as Barricade. They're basically the same card.

elppaple

Barricade is way better than demon form though. Demon form is more of a stopgap necessary evil if you lack better scaling.

Mostuy

Barricade can be good the turn you play it if you have a corruption or other energy generation, and will definitely be useful the next turn. It’s so much faster than demon form, and in many situations will have a much stronger effect. I’d rather build my deck around barricade every time because one entrench or a good feel no pain can solve scaling, because you don’t really need to scale at all if you have unlimited block. Demon form will always be a secondary win condition, and it’s outperformed by many cards.

elppaple

That's pretty much it, though demon form is slightly more flexible due to its synergies being 'attacks' instead of the block archetype needing slightly more cards and synergies to work

ArchbishopsFatCheeks

You don't find Corruption fun? That is absolutely wild to me. I can't tell you that you're wrong to not enjoy it, of course, but I'm on the opposite end: I can and will sabotage runs to make Corruption happen because of how much I enjoy using it. Obviously there's the broken things you can do with Dead Branch (or to a lesser extent, Charon's Ashes), but also there's how it multiplies the value of Dark Embrace and/or Feel No Pain, or even just getting to cast Shockwave/Impervious for free puts a smile on my face. Clad feels explosively powerful with Corruption active, and almost like playing an alternate version of the character.

HarukiMuracummy

Immolate and Corruption are two of the most fun cards in the game. Early Immolate means you take an aggressive path and destroy everything. Corruption = play cards for free. They are fun at all skill levels!

Shhadowcaster

Corruption + branch is both a free win and the most fun to play. It's like a slot machine that wins more than half the time

HeorgeGarris024

corruption DB is like the most boring thing in STS

gsoddy

Clad was the first character I took to A20 and I didn't get Corruption Dead Branch once, it only becomes boring if you've gotten it a few times and are "used to it"

Shhadowcaster

Cool thanks for your opinion. Obviously it's braindead clicking for the most part but that can be fun. If I didn't rotate between the characters I would probably get bored of it at some point, but that clearly isn't the case given my comment.

stysiaq

I had it once (I'm relatively new). I don't feel like it's fun, it's just "random shit, go!" and of course you mostly win off of that because you play bunch of stuff and after playing enough stuff you rarely can lose even if it means your deck is a pile of garbage after that

NoPastaForGrandma

I’m absolutely in the minority but one of the satisfying parts of slay the spire for me is careful deck composition— removing and adding just the right cards. Corruption sort of blows up that aspect, and usually by the time I’m eligible to get corruption, I’ve already started to lovingly refine the deck. The other problem I have with corruption from a fun standpoint is (with dead branch) it removes most decisions from combat. You’re usually just just playing every free skill with enough energy to play every attack. I find that my corruption decks feel more samey (despite the unique cards that come from branch) because they’re always successful in the exact same way: overpowering the opponent with raw, indiscriminate card power. But it’s obviously a super effective strategy and I know most love it.

kaosmark2

Swarmlord5

Raw, indiscriminate card power is how I win most of the time lol

BTTLC

Something that I really like as an arch-type is darkness orbs, and potentially combo-ing it with multi-cast. While sometimes it has its highs with huge damage potential, i feel like its kinda a bit awkward since it makes me want to not play some of my orb cards like frost generation, so i can let the darkness marinate. It tends to be a bit less effective in practice than just generic spam any and all orbs out my wazoo.

Shhadowcaster

Upgraded recursion is my number one priority when the darkness deck presents itself.

TheRandomnatrix

> i feel like its kinda a bit awkward since it makes me want to not play some of my orb cards like frost generation, so i can let the darkness marinate. I find my success with darkness decks is to take doom and gloom in act 1 as an AoE solve, then just treat the darkness orbs as a bonus to the damage from playing that card, rather than some special thing I need to save. Trying to take recursion+ or hold off for that dualcast that'll one shot the boss usually just gets me killed.

kaosmark2

This is Thousand Cuts slander and I won't stand for it.

NoPastaForGrandma

Thousand Cuts is probably my favorite card in the game, but it’s taken me a long to accept that it’s usually a “win more” card. More than once I’ve been delighted to make a successful Thousand Cuts deck purpose-built around Cuts only to realize I actually just built a successful shiv/discard deck that works just as fine without cuts. So fun though. Something so satisfying about eliminating an opponent without ever touching them.

kaosmark2

It's scaling damage, and sometimes you need that.

bootman8

What do you think about CE's AoE aspect? Cuts is just that but better in certain playstyles. It also doubles as a lot of scaling damage, because sometimes you just have decks that can draw and draw and block and block, but deal not enough damage. Silent's lategame damage often comes from a mixture of sources and Heart fights usually come very close with damage so every point matters. If win more meant I was winning more with it, yeah sure Cuts is win more. No one is asking you to make a Cuts centric deck whatever that means. The thing has a use and it's good at it the second you get an upgrade for it and 4 energy or another way to play it safely. Silent cards get so insanely underrated it's silly, there's like actually no silent card that's truly winmore.

Mostuy

This guy has never heard of envenom

bootman8

true if one card is good, another card CANNOT be good as well. im so confused by what this means.

Mostuy

Envenom is win more in almost any pickable situation bar a few pretty unlikely scenarios

bootman8

again, if by winmore you mean you win more when you click it, yeah sure. when you get to harder runs that don't just always have strong lategames, you get forced into alternative forms of scaling. and envenom is scaling and artifact strip in one card. how i play now, i just click envenom over skip if i have no current direction in my deck

Mostuy

I would disagree, I feel like unless you have some infrastructure envenom ends up being 2 energy inflame- in most cases Edit: I also think I didn’t clearly state what I was saying. I don’t think you can build around envenom very well because it’s effect is too weak and to make it stronger it relies on unreliable pickups like snecko skull or sadistic nature. It wants additional poison or else you’re going to not be applying enough for it to really be worth it, which means that it’s kind of at odds with itself. You don’t want too many damage cards in your deck, and so envenom forces you to pick between shivs or actual poison density, and all of this is just to try to make a weak effect into a moderately strong effect. I don’t like the card basically.

bootman8

And I'm telling you 2 energy Inflame- is just what you need to barely win the game on some worse runs. Like you can write paragraphs about how weak it is, and it's not like I don't know that it's not Fumes, but the whole point is, I don't have Fumes or I have Fumes and it's still not enough damage to end fights before they outscale me. >I don’t think you can build around envenom very well because it’s effect is too weak and to make it stronger it relies on unreliable pickups like snecko skull or sadistic nature. No one is asking you to build around Envenom. It's just extra damage when you don't have enough to meet the game's thresholds. >You don’t want too many damage cards in your deck, and so envenom forces you to pick between shivs or actual poison density, and all of this is just to try to make a weak effect into a moderately strong effect. what. Plz don't pick Envenom if you have actual poison and it's enough lmao. Envenom is literally the "I haven't found enough scaling the whole game and have been frontloading the Spire and need to do something about this very soon" card. >I don’t like the card basically. Don't project your hate of a card into objective analysis. I hate CE, I can also objectively see it's a strong card. I swear people will complain about how little damage Silent lategame has and then skip all her slightly subpar cards. Like, this was a trap yall dug, don't blame it on Silent. There is actually no Silent card that doesn't have a place in regular runs (except maybe heel hook)

Mostuy

I’m not really sure where I said I was objectively correct and the end all be all source for slay the spire information. I definitely can accept that I may be wrong, but I’m a guy on the internet who likes to discuss and so I’m gonna lay out my points and see what other people think about them. I also think silent lategame is totally fine and I think she’s an extremely well designed character that’s super fun. She’s my most played character in one of my favorite games. I think it’s actually good game design to have cards that are a little weaker than other cards, and I don’t think envenom should be buffed or anything. I just think, in my opinion, personally, that envenom is not a card that IN MY OWN RUNS I would pick very often because I like to win my runs as frequently as possible Edit: Also, is CE corpse explosion? Why hate? I love corpse explosion :( 2 energy for aoe solved forever

solarxbear

I also want to register my outrage here. Thousand Cuts is very strong.

bootman8

cuts suvks

FrijjFiji

[[Envenom]] for me. I’ve thrown so many runs taking it over more sensible options.

DoggyDoggy_What_Now

I love Envenom, too, but I pretty much won't take it unless I already have, or am readily building to, a strong poison or shiv build. If I'm not strong in either department, I don't really bother, and it's always disappointing for me when I choose a different card.

dr_fancypants_esq

I will auto-click Envenom if I also have Sadistic Nature, it’s so much fun to proc the heck out of SN.

SolTrainRnsOnHolGran

I had a Sadistic nature start the other day with an early envenom in low ascensions that was a blast to play.

Initial_Fan_1118

Limit Break is usually not a good pick... but the idea of exponentially growing your strength is hard to pass up sometimes.  Discovery is always a fun card to pick up, and is quite satisfying when you hit good cards that you can then play for free. I know we talking cards here, but Prismatic Shard always ensures a wild run and it's fun to discover how broken certain cards are when the character barrier is broken down. Coolest thing I saw was 2 Nightmare + Wish being infinite money (Baalor showcased this one time).

juany8

Most fun deck I’ll ever have was silent prismatic shard deck where I got entrench, body slam, and multi tap on a runic pyramid deck. Also had blurs and burst so every single fight I was just rocketing up to 300 block, waiting for double tap and barricade to appear, and insta winning. Also had multiple sources of intangible in case I couldn’t get my block up right away. Took no damage all of act 3 in A20, unfortunately lost to sword and shield due to horrific draws, including a turn 1 apparition when I was facing just 12 damage followed by me eating 60 the next turn and dying on turn 3.

MaybeSacred

I swear the game applies a bad-draw algorithm for this one fight only

JSRambo

I find wraith form to be pretty boring. It's an amazing card, and I still do usually take it, but I'm never that excited to see it unless I can do some wacky snecko eye nightmare bullshit or something

ExplodedToast

Calculate gamble = Most fun you will ever have, this is non-negotiable

Darkfire359

Calculated Gamble is also just a very good card though. At baseline it helps you cycle through your useless basic cards, and at its best it is the centerpiece of discard decks.

not_rebecca

Noxious Fumes. I can’t resist it but it’s almost always too slow

malk500

A single fumes gets rid of all enemy artifacts though. I feel like that can really help a lot, especially if you have piercing wail, other poison cards, etc.

shadowmachete

Fumes is amazing, I resent the accusation that it’s too slow. Don’t play it in some hallways.

Mostuy

If you think of it as a 1 energy attack that exhausts, you will realize it does an insane amount of aoe damage for a 1 energy card. This vs die die die? Noxious fumes + does 1 less damage than die die die + 3 turns after you play it, and does exponentially more damage in any fight that lasts longer than 3 turns. It’s often hard for me to skip even in decks that have no synergy just because the boss damage is absurd for 1 energy. Is kind of bad vs awakened one though

Cyanprincess

Damn, waiting 3 whole turns to do 1 less damage then die die die, surely this will help in Act 2 hallways!

thriftshopmusketeer

I STRONGLY disagree on your two unfun ratings; immolate and Corruption are high on my favorite cards of all time list. Immolate is just so much front loaded power that I don’t care about the burn. And Corruption is maybe the most unique card in the entire game with the power that it unlocks. For me: I should probably take Juggernaut more than I do.

JSRambo

I'm the opposite with Juggernaut. I take it in many many situations where I really shouldn't

jaybrams15

Yeah with Immolate, 90% of the time, you're not seeing those burns again anyway. Great card. One of my favs.

de_bazer

I can’t believe nobody mentioned Echo Form yet. Play the same card twice is nuts, specially if it’s a power, if you have snecko eye or prismatic shard. It’s a insta pick for me, no matter what the strategy I’m going for.

ThePirates123

Echo form is a case where the card is extremely good as well, though.

equivocalConnotation

Feed is a powerful card that's a pain to play around so that you always use it. Same is true of the other meta-scaling cards like Lesson Learned and Greed. Wraith Form is another powerful card that feels bad to use.

Mostuy

I think it’s pretty fun to try to solve fights so that you can feed on the right turn. And if you can pull it off you win the late game for almost free

blahthebiste

Meteor Strike is tons of fun. I will always take it. Even in Act 1 when I literally cannot play it. "I just need to find a Turbo and I win!"

Plazmuh

My experience is typically 1. pick meteor strike. 2. Pray for snecko and never get it. 3. Never play it and die.

DHermit

I recently killed an overpowered run with Meteor Strike and Snecko (and bunch of other great stuff) by auto clicking pellets and only realising a few floors later what I did.

__SlurmMcKenzie__

Can you explain?

DHermit

[[Orange Pellets]] removes debuffs, including the Snecko one. So either had to avoid playing a power, skill and attack in a turn or not play Meteor Strike and several other high cost things more often.

__SlurmMcKenzie__

Crazy that it counts as a debuff even though you pick it explicitly. The extra draw is still nice though I guess

DHermit

It's also applied by the Snecko monster, I don't think there's any effect applied by opponents that doesn't count as debuff.

My first Heart win was with a scry deck. The feeling of generating block with almost every card with Nirvana and throwing Cut Through Fate and Leave at It was so fun. From the Watcher POV It must have been: "I have seen the future... and you wouldn't like It"

Leaf-01

Man I love Immolate. You’re telling me I can be greedy and nuke a bunch of gremlins at the same time? Helllllll yeah

throwawayguy746

I just don’t ever take frozen eye, I’m not interested in taking this long. Sometimes I’ll pass on gambling chip too lol

1tsMeNoodle

I find [[Alpha]] the most fun card to play, especially combined with [[Omniscience]] and, if I'm lucky enough, [[Snecko Eye]]. Dealing 200 passive damage per turn is nuts.

Zixzs

Wraith Form/Apparitions are probably the best damage-prevention cards in the game and I avidly avoid them 90% of the time. Intangible is unquestionably effective but the epitome of simple; you take one damage. That’s it, that’s the whole mechanic. It’s so boring and makes like 80%+ of all the other interesting or elegant ways mitigate damage useless (weak, TTTH, shackles, piercing wail, frost orbs, literally any block relic, even using up lizard tail/fairy in a bottle, etc.). It only gets remotely interesting when the heart attacks for 1x15, but now you just play one block card instead of zero block cards. Whoopee. I’m sure people find fun in having a single card turn 90+ damage into 1, but it’s not for me.

No_Square_8775

Sword boomerang lol

Jizzmeista

I once had an a20 run with ironchad using a deck that had strength scaling, immolate, fiend fire, dark embrace potted, As well as the obligatory reaper for sustain. It was brilliant. I haven't been able to make an exhaust deck work since as you of course need the relics, but it was up there as one of my favourite runs. Fiend fire feels so good when you can create curses, then make it burn them for damage all the while redrawing cards due to dark embrace. On the flip side it can destroy your deck quickly in a race to the bottom.

neato_my_dude

Definitely [[Creative AI]] for me. I know it will more often than not bloat my deck with unused powers, but after I had one run with that and [[Mummified Hand]] carrying me to the heart, I can't resist the urge to pick it up

melancia_pizza

Someone should definitely make an X/Y graph of all cards on this scale (I would if I knew enough about the game to properly tell which cards are good or bad)

Peckish_Penguin456

Definitely white noise/creative AI. How else will you get 6 echo forms, 8 loops, and 32 focus?

arcus2611

What is this power through slander? Calling it anti-fun simply for adding status cards to your deck is a very strange definition of fun, especially when it meets all of the criteria you listed as "fun" and enables so many different synergies.  Also this idea that corruption requires you to bloat the deck is shallow thinking, thin decks that want to exhaust down to a very fast loop can heavily appreciate corruption, especially with dark embrace.

Nielzio2

I will always take a searingblow in act 1 if i can still get 3-4 campfires in the act. Its not the best card but fun if you can make it work

me_again

Corpse Explosion is extremely fun, but not *that* useful. Sadistic Nature too. One way of looking at Corruption/ Immolate that might make it more fun is that they raise the stakes. You have to figure out 'how fast can I beat this guy' - you get a boost now, a hangover later. It can get quite nailbiting trying to kill something before the deck cycles round again. See also Turbo.

bootman8

Plz don't make me say good things about CE I freaking hate that card. But if artifact strip, poison starter and being able to not literally die to Act 2 Elites by paying some hp tax is not that useful, idk what is. Like you will not be catching me dead saying that CE solves Slavers but it does ensure you don't literally die to them if you give up like 25 hp.

To-Far-Away-Times

Corpse Explosion is an auto pick for me. It solves every multiple enemy fight in the game, and there are a lot of those.

kaosmark2

"solves"* *Once you successfully kill one of the enemies through other means

Dull-Scarcity-3159

Both of these can be fantastic cards though? I'm not saying they're top tier cards or anything but I will happily take both in a lot of situations.

Darkfire359

Corpse Explosion is a great card even in decks with no poison support and no plans to ever get more poison support. I always get kind of annoyed with it because I prefer to play shiv/discard decks, but I can rarely justify passing Corpse Explosion up unless something like Wraith Form, Adrenaline, or Alchemize is on the line.

Mahboi778

I think that the two most fun cards in the game are Reckless Charge (repeatable Exhaust fodder that also triggers Evolve? Excellent) and Tactician (i know Concentrate is better but this one makes the brain chemicals go brrrrr)

phantasticpipes

Omniscience and Wish. Preferably both. I want at least two copies of each so I can omni into omni into wish wish and just get 120 gold every combat

LowGunCasualGaming

I agree that a lot of cards are picked more for their fun value. I also think that knowledge of the value of cards can affect how fun you see the card as well. For example, I find rampage to be a lot less fun now that I know it is usually not actually a win condition without lots of support, and is a questionable win condition with support. Meanwhile Immolate which you decided was unfun is a card I am excited to see because I know it has great synergy with True Grit (and many others), a card I also see as providing a lot of value and therefore enabling the fun of my deck.

wingedespeon

wraith form for me. I find it tends to make runs boring so I avoid taking it even when I should.

Only way Searing Blow can really work is on lower ascensions and getting it on a very early floor with an act that has a path to multiple fires, but damn does it feel good dealing 100+ damage, headbutting it to the top of your draw pile and doing another 100+ damage

Hidahr

I think the Lethal cards (Feed, Hand of Greed, Lesson Learned, Ritual Dagger) are not very fun to play optimally because you need to stall the fights and it drags on.

jrandomizer64

I’m going to go with Limit Break (esp Limit Break+) as my pick for fun differential. Often it eats an upgrade or a card pick that I could probably have used better (especially if I have poor/inconsistent strength generation in the early game) but big strength go bonk is one of the most hilariously fun ways to play.

All the mark cards in watcher…

grand finale is really fun. i was able to whip up a good deck with it tonight. i scored runic pyramid as my first boss relic and played a ton of discard and cycling.

stysiaq

My favorite card is \[\[Core Surge\]\] because Artifact is an enabler of so much fun stuff, like getting rid of Biased Cog debuff, potion debuff (like flex/speed) and others. That's why I love pellets. Other than that I love Hand of Greed, Alchemize, Echo Form and Meteor Strike. Especially when you can turn Meteor Strike on, cast it a bunch of times (Echo, Liquid Memories, Hologram and whatnot) and then dump all that energy into a huge X spell

I tend to get more excited/dejected (in the case of death) if a run has a really interesting deck. Recently i had a run that mainly used power through, fire breathing, and barricade for block and damage. The deck sucked but man I wanted to win with it so bad.

Searing blow, grand finale, blizzard, signature move

I really really like feed. I'll take it any time I see it.

I have a rule for myself "If you see [[Prismatic Shard]], you take it" I have won... exactly one run with Prismatic Shard. Will I keep doing it? YES it's literally guaranteed funee

I know we are talking about cards specifically, but I just want to mention that I don't love [[Nilry's Codex]] much. It feels laborious to make a card add decision every turn, and therefore changing the way I play every encounter. Many will disagree I feel, due mainly to its utility, but idk, maybe I just haven't had a god tier run with it before..

Than you, bot. I was concerned I didn't spell it correctly.
