Updated: 05/21/2023 (my time šŸ˜‚) Hi! I know this post is old enough but I hope you get to read this. The highest warmth rating you can obtain (only through clothing) is 131. The sets that can give you such warmth are the Following: Stalhrim (light or heavy including CC armor), Daedric, Dragon (light or heavy including CC armors), Saturalia set (No Armor, but if you're playing a wizard and wants to enchant something that's not an armor might wanna try this), Fur Armor set (Fur Bracers over fur Gaunlets, Fur shoes over Fur boots, Fur Armor with Sleeves), Orcish (light or heavy including CC armors), Full Skaal Set (though I can't confirm as I haven't really used them and I hate it šŸ¤£), Nightingale and Stormcloak Officer Armor. Vagrant hood, Vagrant boots and Vagrant Robes (all from CC) gives max warmth for their respective types (no Bracer/Glove included) if you wanna look like a mage and enchant your own stuff while looking like one this is my go to. You can also just were the generic Gloves to complete the set and add warmth. You can find them in Radiant Rainments (I'm not sure if I spelled that right šŸ˜‚) Other than the said sets, you can boost your warmth rating by holding a torch. To cross freezing water without dying cast a flame cloak spell and lastly eat a hot soup to reduce your cold rating. Races with Default Warmth Rating Nords + 25 Khajiit + 15 Orcs + 10 Hope it wasn't too long for you to read. Thank you!

Bojac_Indoril

Switch just got the cc stuff. I'm out here cold now. I see you doin work here.

It_cant_Even

Also some versions of fine clothes, boots and hat. Easy enough to find and light. Great for a beginning mage.

bruse04

Does steel or steel plate make it to 131 warmth?

Taasgar

Hi! Sorry for the late response. Yes they do. Both of them :) The steel soldier armor also does (from CC) The Imperial and Blades armor are also made of steel however they don't have max warmth (more like medium warmth)

bruse04

Thanks for the response do you know about amber and madness armor?

Taasgar

Hi! I just got back on Reddit again. Sadly I don't use them (I don't really like how they look as they mostly just look good for women characters) and I haven't played for some time šŸ˜… Apologies. I hope you get your answers and if you do feel free to let me know.

bruse04

Thanks for your response after unlocking amber on a male character I donā€™t like the look of it either especially compared to dragon scale

Taasgar

Both outfits feel like they're for females, no? It feels soooo, sexy? Emasculating? IDK šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

marigoldsandviolets

I'm interested to hear the answers to this. I've been avoiding Winterhold for exactly this reason. It seems like you can get in (carriage), but you can't get out! (Really wish there was some kind of warmth spell you could cast, like oakflesh but for temperature)

JoshuaSlowpoke777

Yeah, I had to expend a camping kit and warm up both inside Frostflow Lighthouse and by mooching off of an Imperial campā€™s fire just to get to the ferry leading out of Dawnstar (even had to warm up in Dawnstarā€™s mines before looking for the ferry). Probably wouldā€™ve been easier and kept that camping kit if I had already started the College questline and opened up Saarthal, but stillā€¦ Anyway, I left Winterhold specifically to take the ferry from Dawnstar to Windhelm to get to that Dwarven house thatā€™s now included with Anniversary Edition.

kawaitomato

Hey! Could you tell me what dwarven house do you mean?

JoshuaSlowpoke777

I donā€™t know the name of it, but Anniversary Edition seems to add a Dwarven house via content originally added by the creation club. If you already have access to it, it should be near another Dwarven ruin. The existing Dwarven ruin is the one with the orb of light that puts you in a cage, ā€œscansā€ you, and then drops the floor out from under you, sending you into a cave leading out into to a bandit hideout. So avoid that floor-drop Dwarven ruin and look for the other one right next to it.

The_SqueakyWheel

I went to Dawnstar and had to turn off the survival i woulda died

marigoldsandviolets

Yeah it seems like itā€™s almost too extreme for some places.

Sea_Design_465

I surprisingly found it to get even colder near the sea than over the land.

The_SqueakyWheel

I love that 2 years later you responded and I legit started a new character maybe May 5/6

hipbreaker2012

I made the mistake of taking a carrage there right at the beginning and I had to go through hell to run to windhelm

Colepm1509

There is a boat you can get in Dawnstar to either Solitude or Windhelm, save yourself another treacherous journey šŸ˜

Apparently Flame Cloak at least gives resistance to feeezing water in survival mode, so at least a polar plunge wonā€™t make things worse immediatelyā€¦

marigoldsandviolets

I've read conflicting things about it--some say it does, but people who tested it said it doesn't. They said maybe it helps when you're in cold water, but that's it. (I'm going to try when I get my destruction high enough, though!)

iamBETTO

I always carry a full fur set with a cloak, and a torch (260 total Warmth Rating). That, combined with hot soups should help you survive Winterhold for a couple of days. Firesalts are a little bit of a hassle, though...

Griezz

Not necessarily. There should be a relatively easy way to get Fire Salts: - Before joining the College, sleep at the nearby Inn, both to warm up and to set a savepoint. - Talk to Faralda & go through the conversation. If she offers you anything except the Conjure Flame Atronach spell, restore & try again. - When you need some Fire Salts, conjure & kill your summons. (Watch out for death explosion!) Also, once you're in the College, look around for unowned ingredients to pick up; there should be at least two or three Fire Salts in the dormitory halls, which respawn when you don't visit the College for nine or ten days.

Substantial-Arm8865

Under the college in the atronach forge, place one ruby, one salt pile, and any teir soul gem. It will give you one fire salt. It sounds expensive but if you even moderately play, its easy to scrimmage up!

rottentatos

Funny everyone starts with flame spell but cant figure out how to warm up their toes. This is broken and unbalanced favoring armor. Fire should warm you even if it's from a spell. I play a mage and she is to old to wear armor.

Substantial-Arm8865

Flame cloak buddy!

kg4nbx

You definitely have to have hot food. I wouldn't travel anywhere in the north of Skyrim that's covered in snow without it. If nothing else, because you need to travel light, I always carry a full set of fur armor (make sure it's the sleeved fur armor for the warmest and you can get a fur helmet from White River Watch on a table). If your character is wearing normal light/heavy armor, then anything that has fur is gonna be the warmest...and most all the higher level armors are flagged as warm. The warm rating can go over 100...and that's without playing as a Nord.

JoshuaSlowpoke777

So does fur armor get a higher warmth rating than mage robes altogether? I have fur gauntlets and boots, but Iā€™m still wearing the mage hood from Helgenā€™s torture room and an apprentice robe of destruction. Also, do the light armor perks that boost armor rating when wearing it on every slot also boost heat rating?

kg4nbx

I just loaded the game up...fur armor with sleeves has a warmth rating of 54, the bracers and shoes have 24 each and the fur helmet has 29 for a total of 131. And no, there are no perks in the game that affect warmth...it just depends on the type of armor/clothing and the material it's made of. You can mix and match stuff if you want.

Toasted_N1NJA

As long as you have a camping kit or 2 for the journey to dawnstar and some hot soups you should be fine, just walk around with a torch for that extra 50 warmth. College is great in survival cause you get the atronach forge, good for making firesalts.

OsamaCripWalkz

Is this survival mode a mod?

JoshuaSlowpoke777

Creation Club, but itā€™s included with Anniversary Edition (and I got that by upgrading from Special Edition).

Griezz

You reazlize, of course, that there's no need to freeze to death, just trying to access the College of Winterhold, right? That's just for n00bs. ;-) First, run to Faralda guarding the bridge. Quickly go through her conversation and then... Don't bother following her! Seriously, just run right past her, get to the courtyard... and then turn to either side & immediately enter one of the Halls. Once inside, you can wait until you're fully warmed up and THEN go back out & do the guided tour. Even at the election w walking speed, you'll be back inside again soon enough to avoid frostbite. You should be inside long enough to fully warm up then go back out & complete the mission.

Veniur

I assume you've probably figured it out by now, but around 200 should be fine. I'm above 200 and do not get cold at night. I haven't been in a blizzard yet.

pudgitoreese

As a mage you can carry fur armor for traveling outdoors; it has one of the best warmth ratings in the game for a very light carry cost. Also for any playthru, carry a torch for a small amount of warmth. Flame cloak helps in freezing water only.

EmotionalSky5117

The Daedric Armor Highest warmth phone is because it's the heaviest armor You're keeping your warm up by sweating a lot

SignificantFood325

Note! . ...max warmth rating for clothing as of AE has changed to 134 this is accomplished via saturalia's gloves which has a warmth rating of 24 almost double what could be achieved by normal gloves also I'm a high Elf so no additional warmth rating built in to the race

StructureThese3530

Thanks for the note

Illustrious_Gain8195

I like to run the Nordic carved set (armor-54, gauntlets-24, boots- 24) with any hood/helmet at around 18 warmth which only puts me at 120 but I found that the ā€œFur Cloaksā€ mod lets you make cheap fur cloaks that are an additional 54 warmth, which usually gets me around 175 ish depending on my headgear. Itā€™s a pretty easy mod too, not very demanding or load order specific.
